I like it when reviewers tell us they can see a game being in their top 10 of the year. That always catches my attention as opposed to, "This is a good game". I have a lot of those.
pre ordered this for Essen pick up. Seeing your video makes me even happier that I did. I also really liked Santa Marie but am more attracted to the theme of Saltfjord.
There's so many ways to do a revised edition of a game, but when the authors do a complete redo without losing the best of the original design, that's the best way to do it. This looks to be coming around the end of the year or at least by Essen, i look forward to it...i'm going to give away my santa Maria now :)
Given that this shares a bit of the design team with my favourite game of all time, Revive, how would you comare these two games. It's currently number one on my Essen list of games to check out/purchase.
sorry i missed this question! i'd rank saltfjord higher, but that's in large part because there's no real potential for land grabbing out from under your opponent like revive (which was our least favourite thing a bout that brilliant game)
@ no worries. You are typically faster in replying than anyone else out there. I did end up picking it up at Essen and I've played Saltfjord twice now and have definitely enjoyed it. That said it's nowhere close to knocking off my number one game of all time - Revive. I feel like I am their number one fan at this point. When I meet the designers, all four, a year ago they made me feel like the VIP. Just passing on the love for great design.
Can my collection justify both this and Santa Maria + expansions? I just got Santa Maria and would hate for it to feel completely outdone by this game.
i dont think it would make sense to have this and just SM, but since you've got the expansion as well, that really does make SM pretty unique (higher player count, asymetric gameplay) so that would make more sense :)
@@rahdo this is good news, I've heard that the expansion really is a different beast. Happy to hear both could be justified, we'll see if they release a similar expansion to Saltfjord one day too. 🤔

it will be preordered the second that becomes possible
😮 I need this game
I'm keeping my Santa Maria as I managed to get the expansion for it. I'll still look out for this game next year.
Wow, what a beautiful game! 😍 Based on your comments, I will now go watch the playthrough - I'm thinking this is a game we will enjoy. ☺
This cover looks amazing but the board with the forest and the mountains looks very busy. Does it affect gameplay in any way?
it didn't feel that way while playing. maybe that's just an artifact of being on a small computer screen :)
You've ran through several good games recently, thanks!. How would you compare the relative complexity of this, Shackelton Base and Galileo Galilei?
shackleton is easily the most complex, and i'd say saltfjord is in the middle (though in terms of complexity SF and GG are very close)

I loved Santa Maria, but it was towards the top end of complexity for my group. How much more complex is this please?
it's comparable i'd say. probably a bit simplier, but only a tiny bit.

Theme is utterly boring, but this look like a fantastic euro design, insta buy!
