Even though he has made a point from a statistical point of view the reality is much worse than you might think.
For Starters you get taxed on personal and real estate property tax and goes up every year.
Traffic is horrible, I believe its even worst than New York city and the toll road rates are so Bad that the change depending on the time you use them, they use to be free since you pay property tax and tax to use the highway but not anymore, the government just wants that money.
Cost of living use to be fair in Virginia. Not any more the cost of living here and inflation outweighs any median income in the area Prices of real estate are extremely high and rents are ridiculous and specially for what you are buying.
Socially people in Virginia tend to keep to them self and seen as Rude but not really, the people that are raise here the main reason that drives this it because the laws in Virginia are not totally Just as a main example aiding and abetting An accomplice can be subjected to the same penalties as the person who committed the crime and in Virginia you just have to be next to that person specially if you are a minority, You can be in your car with a friend you got stopped if he has something on him or her they shouldn’t have well guess what you’re paying for the crime to so people really try to maintain a distance.
Here its just work and work to pay the bills the environment is not fun its dull and expensive.
The food restaurants and entertainment are not really here and for what you’re going to pay you are not receiving nothing very exclusive even in high end restaurants.
Entertainment and service you would think its word class because it’s the Capital think again There is a lot of variety of food options but they’re not that great.
The Weather its cold and windy 9 months of the year and when its hot the humidity is Terrible people say Auttum is beautiful well once you see it that the tree leaves change color for a few days once that’s over that it, and spring is super green which is true but it comes the allergies
Unless you have a federal job or are going to work for a government contractor, I would say its not worth living here you will be super miserable in 3 years and stuck.
Going to the beach the main options are Ocean City MD and VA beach which are not good options for what your paying and its more than a 3 hour drive with no traffic to be honest a better option to would Be and go to the Outer banks NC specially the light house area 7 hour drive but its worth it in compared to the other 2 although you are going to spend their more than what you would spend taking a Vacation in the Caribbean and on the other 2 as wells
If you are looking to be close to Washington D.C it’s not what people think it is for those who are not from here it will be pretty impressive at first site but with time you will realize its not what you thing it is specially after you been already to the museum.

I’m originally from Woodbridge, Virginia moved to Culpepper when I was 30 now living south of Charlottesville and I am 39 now and I absolutely hate Virginia anymore, the taxes are ridiculous. Prices of everything is ridiculous and the people here suck..

Nova is not the same place I grew up in at all. Too pricey, expensive. Most of the neighbors on my street have moved out and left after 4-5 years. Don’t blame them.

I moved from Orange County, CA to Virginia in 2022 and am paying a higher % of my income to state income taxes here because it's pretty much a flat tax compared to California's progressive tax. California also doesn't have a personal property taxes and school lunches are free. I'm one of the few people that increased their cost of living moving out of California.

As a newbie to Northern Virginia I can tell you the first thing that makes me want to leave, the flipping taxes on everything. And this is before I hear your video. I've only lived here for 2 years now, and I'm from the south so not used to this many taxes much less paying $8k for property tax and not really benefiting.

As much as I don't want to, I am considering moving out of Nova next year. Looking at Richmond, NC, FL. Just need a job before I move down there so I know I have income. Wouldn't be able to hold my current data center job if I moved south.

Was brought to NoVA in 1968 as a Navy brat.. in all the years living here (altho WA PNW is home), i wouldn't trade living anywhere else, unless it's a deserted island. I started life here in HS, College (summer pay was tuition), worked in DC and VA, saved $$ to buy a condo as a single. Married, sold condo to buy SF, 3 BR, 1 BA, 1025 sf, 1/2 acre, raised 3 kiddos, divorced, worked to earn a 401K, now retired. Living here can be pricey.. that's why I'm in rural suburbs, everything is not that far away.. mountains, ocean, theatre, concerts.. even NY. Living is relative.. just go with flow.
