- Wow this place sure has changed!
There’s no place on the planet like Washington, DC. Our nation’s capital. The center of democracy. Home to all of our branches of the federal government, home to the supreme court, and home to our sitting president. Our history and our future all have a place here.
We’re gonna drive around parts of Washington DC and look around a little bit. We’ll see some nice areas, some bad parts of town, and discuss problems that exist here, like they do in every other American city.
Right now, we’re in an area of town called the Mall. Here are all of the monuments and important buildings where laws are written and enforced. It’s a very nice part of town. In fact, most of the heart of DC is very pleasant. There are tourists all over and locals come down to frolic on the grounds and or dine.
DC sure has changed a lot. They’ve gentrified parts of town that were ruined by riots 50 years ago. Many neighborhoods like this were in a bad place in the 1980s, and DC’s population plummeted by 25% by 1990 due to crime and a crack epidemic. In 1992, Washington DC was the murder capital of America.
But most places you drive through now have completely recovered, and it’s super expensive to live here again. There’s nothing over a million bucks on this street. There are a bunch of young millennials moving in in neighborhoods like this. How they can afford it, I don’t know. Most cannot.
One of our nation’s capital’s issues is its economic gap. It ranks in the top ten for cities with the biggest gap in income equality. The racial disparity here is also quite evident. All of the upscale toney neighborhoods like this are white, and the ghetto hoods are all black. There’s very little working poor or middle class here.
Now I didn't explore every square inch of this city and I'm sure there are parts of it that resemble the old DC where it's dirty and rundown and where the criminals prey but I didn't see it and I am glad.
The far east side of town across the Anacostia River on the fringes of DC is where it’s the worst. This whole area was the center of the crime and the drugs and was completely ghetto. Today, it too is going through an urban renewal of sorts.
If you left DC 20 years ago and came back, you wouldn’t even recognize the place.
After a big turnaround of two decades of growth, things here seemed to have peaked for now. DC’s population declined by 3 percent in the last year.
And, like every other major city, Washington DC has a huge homeless crisis on its hands. Scattered throughout the city are homeless encampments like these. Some are vacated, others house people who have been here for a long time. Most of the homeless I talked to said they were waiting for affordable housing. For some, it was a many years wait. In the meantime, they go back and forth between cheap motels and shelters, accepting handouts and finding a way to get by.
While in DC I walked around at night. It’s totally clean, and to be honest, pretty dead. This is just blocks from the white house. It’s easy to feel very safe this close to the capital, but you never feel like you’re ALONE. Like there are probably people watching every square inch from the tops of these hotels and office buildings.
I walked past big buildings that looked very important. The columnullur designs were very impressive.
And you’re always reminded about politics no matter where you go in DC.
I also went to the top of the W hotel to get a neat view of the white house and surrounding area. Lots of people were dressed up like they were important. And they played Jason Derulo quite a bit up here, which is weird.
Some would say the worst part of DC isn’t the poverty or the crime or the racial inequality. It’s the politics itself. The politicians themselves. The guts of the place and the reason for its existence. There’s not a lot of faith in the people who run this place anymore. As DC gets more toxic and divided and completely removed from the realities of all Americans, there will be a stain on this town that all the gentrifying can never remove.

I get so mad when someone says Medicare and social security are an entitlement. I was a registered nurse 17 years and got sick and had to go on disability. I cried so hard and was so upset and my dad said for me to stop it because he paid enough in land tax alone for my check. He said everyone pays in and it is an insurance for emergencies. He was right after I looked into it if they did not steal from it for other things it would work as a fantastic program for the sick and older Americans. Our government spends on crap in all the other countries and could care less about it's own people. Both sides are evil and corrupt the left and the right. People should vote for a good person not a party of thieves.

This is literally happening everywhere, in every large cities and small towns in America. Regardless of politics. It’s a societal issue. From Florida to New York to Texas and California. Politicians on both sides of the political spectrum spend more time blaming each other than actually resolving the issue at hand.

You can say that (by state), however- if you look/research who “runs” the cities - you will notice a common theme of who is in charge of these problematic cities and towns- and their associated policies. It’s honestly clear as a sunny clear day. Society is the way it is or is becoming (it is worsening every day) because there’s virtually no law and order (we don’t need any more new laws- we simply need the existing laws to be enforced!) and if and when an arrest is made- the judge and or even sometimes the jury of the defendant’s peers, lets the “criminal” walk Scott free. There’s no accountability. Victims no longer have any rights and thieves and even violent criminals are let go to simply re-commit crimes. Fentanyl is allowed to continue to poison Americans and anyone without any background check is allowed into our communities- allowing for human trafficking and drug dealing of fentanyl. Just recently, San Fransciso finally made two (separate) arrests for fentanyl distribution (where non suspecting users -who thought they were buying Xanax or a pain killer like Percocet, were killed by fentanyl) and in both cases the defendants’ attorneys made the case that the defendant was “trafficked” and in both cases it was a hung jury- so the drug dealers (who were also undocumented) were released back into the communities where they are killing people via Fentanyl without any kind of penalty or repayment back to society. --not even a promise to stop dealing Fentanyl had to be made. It’s really quite astounding and such a significant issue that Americans must wake up to, address and implement real solutions that actually work. Mental illness is another issue - small but loud groups of people say it is inhuman to place a mentally ill person in a mental hospital or facility - but these same people think the way they live on the streets is humane? It doesn’t make any sense at all. Is it “humane” for small children who get off of their school buses or who walk to school to have to see open intravenous drug use, the smoking and inhalation of meth, the dedication, urination and even open air prostitution (sex acts such as blow jobs right there on the sidewalks? Is it humane to jeopardize children stepping on used needles? Is it humane to have handicapped people or people with disabilities have to walk out into a busy street because they can’t walk on the sidewalk because tents and so much trash completely blocks the sidewalk(s)? Is it humane that residents no longer have a grocery store or pharmacy because the businesses closed due to theft and dangerous working conditions for their employees? Etc etc. it’s just too much.

Where are the millions who are pouring across the border every other month living? Aren't they in competition with citizens for scarce housing, driving up demand and therefore prices?
I spent 25 years in DC, working downtown. When I left, in 1995, it was the best day of my life. DC gave me a lot but its an expensive, arrogant, traffic clogged mess. Its a miserable place full of self-important miserable people.

@@TR4R the impression of DC you get from this drive through and Cal Thomas' pointless and irrelevant political rant is so far from the reality of visiting DC, which I can assure you is one of the most enjoyable cities you'll ever visit. Living and working here has its challenges for sure, due to the high cost of living and congestion, but there's been no better time to visit DC than right now.

I am from Russia and as a child at school in a social studies lesson we made reports on the topic of the American president and I chose Roosevelt, I wrote a paper on his reforms from unemployment for students, I was very impressed by his works and I believe that these people need their own Roosevelt (I'm sorry, I understand that this does not concern me, but I'm sorry these people)
They don’t need a socialist like FDR - they need Trump who proved that our economy had the highest minority employment rate in history instead of living on welfare.

there's plenty of jobs for everybody here in America. these homeless people chose this life style. they would rather do drugs and live on the streets because they have too much pride working a minimum wage jobs. there's free government house where you can stay free up to a year or more until you get back on your feet but chose to live in a tent anywhere they want that's how they feel free. In California you get up to $500 free if your homeless, theres a homeless guy that said. 'why do i need to work when the government gives me free money, doing nothing' that's why we have this tent epidemic.

No one is forcing anyone to use drugs or alcohol. ITS A CHOICE!
Addictions are heavy chains. A lot of people want to quit but the sickness / bad that happens in the process to find the peace of sobriety. Hard to have hope with struggling resources or a lacking support system.
I don't have much sympathy for druggies. They CHOSE to stuff their bodies with coke or meth. Nobody forced it down their throats...
I'm so happy you did my city. This city is messed up. The violence, shootings and super expensive! Rich young people, apartments being built EVERYWHERE. Tons of crazy homeless. I can't even smoke a cigarette or walk downtown without someone begging me for something
I agree. My daughter and family live at Ft Belvoir, and never venture into the city unless they have to. I visited them last Christmas and she and I went downtown D.C. and to the Smithsonian. We both wanted a nice visit to a museum of natural history, but all the while we were enjoying the dinosaurs and fossils, we were bombarded with propaganda on how the human race has decimated the planet and caused these mass extinctions. Well, what a downer! Then we stopped at a famous little cofffee/pastry shop close by and had to deal with a homeless/mentally ill lady who kept cutting in front of us in line, but not ordering anything. Then around the corner in an out of sight alley, gang bangers were eyeing us suspiciously and giving us the gang gestures. Then our parking ticket was $30/hour. And the people are not friendly there at all. Mostly minorities have the government service jobs and boy, you don't ask them any questions as they will give looks that could kill. Such a different experience from when I was in D.C. in the 60's with Woodstock, bongo drums in every traffic circle, anti Vietnam protests, and Nixon landing on the White House lawn in his presidential helicopter. LOL

My sister goes to university in dc and I live in MD suburbs. It’s crazy to see a homeless encampment next to a $90k a year university. The city is better but it’s still crazy

@@alexmiller7173homeless encampment by GW would be correct. I lived across the street from the school up until a few months ago. I’ve seen things I never thought would happen at a university. It is a concerning and very odd situation to witness all the tents by campus, some subsidized to live in the same private buildings and breaking in to sole college girl’s apartments, asking and sometimes threatening these kids to give them money.

And another street over you can find a larger encampment. There are also tents close by the GW hospital and their school of public health
Washington DC is fueled by the salaries of overpaid federal employees. Countrywide, the highest paid feds are in Washington DC. When they retire from the government at age 56, they go to work as overpaid federal and military contractors.

Your guest was spot on about the craziness in society and among politicians. I’m from Alberta,Canada and we are experiencing exactly the same thing, especially with the autocrat we call Trudeau. Your guest was correct about the importance of family, and parents teaching correct principles. I’m 79 years old, a retired policeman, firefighter, and EMT-A. The good days are behind us, sad to say.

DC has a lot of highly paid professionals, especially attorneys.
My son is 32, well educated(earned on GI bill)former military, and works his @ss off at a higher paying job to afford to live there. He chose to live there, where he happily thrives vs returning to our rural Ohio where there are no opportunities like he has found there. We are just hard working middle Americans, he is in no way a trust fund silver spoon spoiled brat.

it reminds me of my NYc days, the girls who worked could not afford to have bebies, we paid high taxes so the ladies who did not work COULD. I was so jealous of all those baby mamas smoking on the stoops while I rushed around!
That happens still. Eveywhere. What is common is the woman has children and does not marry the father. She gets assistance, free school lunches, cheap subsidized tutoring, head start, food stamps, heating assistance, etc. But the father lives with them and works(lies about living there) or the boyfriend lives with them(they don't report it) and the boyfriend works and contributes their income to the household. (and the father who lives elsewhere pays child support until age 18)She does not work until the kids reach age 13 and then the law says they can be left alone for a certain number of hours. Once the kids are old enough. And child support keeps coming in so the new boyfriend does not marry her until the last kid is 18. Pretty sweat deal to be able to sit at home and get assistance and work a little or not work. Especially when the kids are say 14-17. It is like getting bonus pay. Both from the government and the real father and the boyfriend. Quite the racket. Happens all the time. And there just are not enough people to check on people taking advantage of the system with unreported income and lying about living arrangements.

@@RawOlympia I know. It is funny, well not funny, that people like this that take advantage of the system use money that could go towards someone who sincerely needs it. I do not understand how people can be so irresponsible about having children knowing they cannot afford them. Does a child want to be born into poverty or living amongst gangs or living on the streets in a tent with their parents... No. But they often don't have a choice. So I guess I can understand why people game the system. But this is also why I am an advocate for free birth control. But the opposite is true for Republicans. They want to get rid of all reproductive rights. Problem is they have no plan or funding for these kids once they leave the womb. They are more worried about their Bible thumping values as they sit in their nice homes and take their expensive vacations. Meanwhile I pass by tents in my town where families live and the kids are walked to the bus stop to go to school. Or I have seen poor children living in cheap hotels here... You can see them peaking through windows or running around in the parking lot. Those are the lucky ones as at least they have a shower and a bathroom. Although the hotel is probably infested with cockroaches and bed bugs... Yeah... I think I will stick with Democratic leadership. 👍

@@twillison8824 George Bush was the one who got NAFTA started at the end of his term as President. He signed the agreement on December 17, 1992. If he had been re-elected, he would have signed final ratified version that Clinton did. Ross Perot was the only one who was opposed to it.

I moved to DC from NC back in 2002 to work for the federal government. The city is a lot emptier that it was pre-COVID because a lot of federal workers are teleworking. I am only coming into the office one day a week. Also, since DC legalized marijuana a few years ago, the smell of weed on some of the metro trains is overwhelming. Homelessness has always been a problem here. When I worked in a bad part of town while our building near the White House was being renovated, I had to deal with crackheads wandering around drugged out of their minds (one guy was walking around naked and the cops arrested him for indecent exposure), the bank on the lobby level getting robbed, a bomb threat at the hotel next door, etc. The northern VA suburbs are very nice but the high cost of living and traffic make me want to move back to the Raleigh area when I can retire.

I’ve lived in DC and travel into the city pretty often. I really like DC. Loads of great restaurants, entertainment,outdoor spaces and tons of stuff to do year round. Lots of it free. Great services. Good housing. It’s an underrated city.
I used to live a few miles from Dulles Airport. Never drove to DC, always took Metro which was fast and convenient. DC suburbs are great - as blue as you can get. Great food - Thai, Korean, Viet, etc. whatever you want. Rents are expensive. They say 1.7-M folks in Northern Virginia and about half have a security clearance, including me who worked for Homeland Security. I once made a wrong turn while living in McLean and ended up at the front gate of the CIA. It was the George HW Bush Center for Intelligence (no signs saying it's CIA). LOL
I hear they have great pizza places too

There was once a big homeless encampment in D.C. back in the early 1930's called 'Hoovervilles.'
I used to visit Washington, DC a lot many years ago, and then there were camps of homeless Viet Nam vets.

Thanks for making this video. I grew up in Alexandria VA and my dad worked in the district. I have so many fond memories of going to work with him and walking by the food trucks for lunch and eating in the parks. Now my brother works hybrid in DC and I really worry about his safety. I have left the area because I do not care for the government/political vibes. Every time I go back to visit it just feels worse. Outside of my parents quaint old town neighborhood I don't really care for the metro area in general - that's just my personal preference.
Normally I seldom reply to comments but yours caught me deer in the headlights. I grew up in Alexandria too. Actually lived in Belle Haven as a child. Went to school in Old Town as well. NOVA itself really did a number on me thru life. No need to rant about it but it was like almost a prison for me until I finally got out. HOWEVER that being said Old Town will always hold a place in my heart as it is truly Alexandria's Crown Jewel. I just could never afford a decent pace in their zipcode.

I currently live in northern VA but I am originally from NC. I don't care for this area either but my job is in DC and it pays well. I don't want to spend $700 thousand or more for a townhouse and I hate sitting in traffic for hours.
@@markbeames7852 A) They barely go into Virginia at all. Urban sprawl has exploded in Northern Virginia.
B) Because of A, you need to get into a bus, taxi, or Uber/Lyft for the remainder of your journey. If you want to cut out the slowness of a bus but pay more, you go for taxi or Uber/Lyft.
C) Let's say you take the bus, it only goes to a hub stop that may or may not be close to your job so you either walk the rest or see B. Might as well save your money and time by just drive directly to your job without the headache of transferring between transportation methods and walking.
Even Silver Spring, MD has gone to crap. However, my relatives voted for the fools who created the mess in the first place. They only have themselves to blame.
Im in Alexandria but work in DC. I get the hell out of DC as early as I can and don't go there on weekends. I used to love it. No one can afford to live here. I cant wait to retire and move out of the area, and you drove by my building! Lots of homeless, and I recommend you try the Metro.

my husband is a land surveyor and works a lot in DC (recently worked on construction at the Chinese embassy) and he said every week they run into some super jacked up dude who is outside acting crazy trying to start fights with people passing by. I worry about his safety but at least he always carries a machete on his hip 😬

Yes…I lived there for 15 years and literally did not know or care how someone voted. We never discussed it. We were too busy working and then and going to Dewey bEach on the weekends. My how times have changed the last 10 years there.

Just saw a video of a woman at Target who loaded up $1000 worth of stuff and said she was not paying because she was owed reparations! 🤦🏼♀️ Happy to say she didn’t get by with it! Lol. World is going to hell in a hand basket! Gas here in AZ is 5.20 last I was out which was last week so probably more now! Cal is correct.. it’s a power play and we, the citizens, are suffering! One of the problems is the two parties that people will vote for their party, no matter what! 😢

Politics in the UK are frustrating but in the US they are a nightmare. When you have tent cities everywhere your system is broke. Getting the billionaires to pay their fair share is not a crime but their duty. Not everyone is well enough either physically or mentally to take full responsibility for themselves. We all go through bad patches. You have to ask yourself why drugs are such a problem in the US. Perhaps not enough support for mental health services or health care so people self medicate or hopelessness in the working poor. What I have witnessed on this channel is deeply shocking in a country considered one of the richest in the world. The UK has its problems but nothing on the same scale. We have access to free medical care and a society that would not accept tent cities.
DC is probably one of the best cities to live in in the entire country. The homeless problem, like that homeless guy said, is people coming from other states to take advantage of DC’s generosity. But DC is the place with the highest paying jobs, most educated people, best schools, and recession proof. The housing market sucks in DC but if you go down the street to VA or MD it’s better.
DC is grifting taxes from the rest of the country...
I’ve served food to the homeless in different parts of DC. Most of them don’t have a hard time finding food to eat even the vegetarians. Some homeless tents are filled with junk as it’s easy to get free merchandise. A lot of the people I met or helped served came from poor red states.

DC downtown is kept up but outside the tourist areas you got it right.Income disparity is really there.
My first time out of the USA was Kathmandu, Nepal.
A textbook "poor country", and the initial culture shock was massive.
After 3 weeks, Kathmandu seemed more organized. How do I put it? Sure, there was an infrastructure problem & there were no boutique/cookie cutter houses. But, what seemed at first like utter chaos, now seemed more organized and harmonious in that chaos.

I’ve served food to the homeless in different parts of DC. Some of them don’t want a shelter as it comes with strict rules so camp outside. A few of them don’t want to change their ways and are okay living homeless by choice in DC. I have friends that reside in DC and they see way more non-DC residents getting arrested than DC. Some parts of Virginia and Maryland are close to DC.

i grew up in se dc, lived there from 02-07. it was still pretty rough when i lived there, but it’s completely different now. i was shocked when went down my old street in 2020 and saw it completely cleaned up.

I lived in Alexandria, VA, for about 5 years in the 2000s, and went to DC regularly.
The areas I would avoid look a lot better, and the mall, from Pennsylvania Avenue to The White House, actually don't look as bad as I imagined.
I found the best nightlife was centered around Dupont Circle, and the north of the city. The cinema I frequented most was actually in Maryland, but within the metro area.
Best nightclubs are in that area?
Actually probably bars. I'm not sure there are nightclubs in DC.

So refreshing to listen to Cal‘s opinion, I agree with him completely. The border is one of the worst things. I really believe putting up that wall was a start. Even though I would not vote for the dump. He is just totally on point. And one of the things he says, is how people no longer have courtesy, politeness, or respect which is very important, and the debt is the next thing he addresses, so true. Great program like always!
So, why don't you host and feed a few illegals if you hate Trump so much. explain how he created record inflation, $5 a gallon gas, soaring crime rates, homeless camps everywhere.

This has got to be one of the best uses of video time that I have seen on you tube. If more people knew what Cal knows and took action. We wouldn't be losing our once great Nation so quickly to the banking cartels through their ministry of propaganda. I live in the DC metro area. Some very nice areas and some hoods. It’s really a disgrace for a capital city and region.
It’s America in the future.
California is another example of what’s to come for the rest of the country.
Problem is it’s easier to live on welfare than doing two jobs that pay poverty wages and with the business profits going keeping the rich happy rather then increasing pay.

D.C. has always had its issues, i hate it, i was out there for a few days for a job conference in 2004, the traffic is horrid, and people seem to honk their horns at everything and nothing, constant getting startled and jarred.

Some of my favorite memories from my eleven years living there: The Pageant of Peace Christmas trees on the Ellipse between the White House and the National Mall, walking around Georgetown on warm Saturday afternoons, seeing John Denver sing to the music of John Williams and the Boston Pops at the Lincoln Memorial, seeing the amazing sandstone stairs in the original part of the U.S. Capitol Building (including signs of engrained bloodstains from battles with the British during the War of 1812), seeing The Beach Boys perform near the Washington Monument on the Fourth of July, seeing the original George Bush sworn in, and the Quayle kids walking with the family from the U.S. Capitol to the White House following the inauguration ceremony, and being with a friend at dinner on Valentines Days over the years.

As someone who has been homeless, and additionally experienced some difficult times. I agree with Cal. I’m not poor people should left to starve or suffer but the idea he points to ‘that these intentions are are not working’ (paraphrased). If it not working how long will it continue before trying something new.

That was quite a fest getting Cal Thomas! But in my 40 plus years as an adult neither political party has been fiscally responsible.
D.C. is a lot like Connecticut, it has rich and very poor, not really anything in between. though when i was there, i never saw it this bad, neither did my father when he was there a few times in the 80s for a job interview.

Nick, some of these towns that you go to are just so rundown and so unbelievable you can go to Europe and you can see their towns have been there for for 500 years and they still look good but you come to America and you see nothing but poverty I mean it’s got to be embarrassing but yet we have the best weapons in the world it’s crazy and then we see homeless people on the street asking and begging for money women prostituting men selling kids for men’s pleasure. It’s a sick sick society.
