Great video. You can't overstate the park system enough. Not only do we have the river, but there is an amazing greater river park system! On both sides of the river you can find biking and walking trails, river access, and the occasional ruins (if you are adventurous). The architecture also can't be overstated. People move to Richmond for James River and Breweries? Unbelieable. People move due to job change for the most part to Richmond and other neighboring cities. Do not use James River as a carrot for people's relocation to Richmond. Talk about good school districts,, quieter/safer neighborhood, few good companies, et al. I had moved to the Richmond area 22 years ago due to a job change to Glen Allen area and bought a home in a good school district to raise my children. By the way, I have not visited James River and any brewery/winery that you are talking about.
Two things you mentioned, I’m not allowed to comment on but the 3rd, you’re absolutely right. We’ve really enjoyed the river as well as many other rivers and waterways in VA. Being able to be on a mountain stream or at the Chesapeake Bay in 2 hours or less is really nice for us.
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND Rivers are not a selling point for people's relocation. It's primarily due to job change that people move in. I am one of them. Yes, we do have James River (which I've not visited other than having a glimpse of it while driving) and touristy spots like VA Beach, Chesapeake Bay and Shenandoah/Blueridge Parkway within a two-hour drive. But these are just the frills. It's not because of these people move in. I've travelled and lived in CA, NM, FL, OH, TX, KS, WI, Northern VA and I like all of them but I chose Glen Allen area for low cost of living besides great school district and quite neighborhood.
Hi! The ‘burbs of Richmond are filled with all sorts of folks that are at varied phases of their lives. That’s what’s makes it such a great area. There is always something going on , no matter the time of year. No need to go into the city for fun , culture , or good food and drinks- countless clubs, dog parks, eateries , wineries, volunteer organizations, classes, recreation opportunities, etc. in the ‘burbs.
Richmond manages to combine the most negative aspects of the Northeast and the worst of the South. Its like Memphis meets Newark. If you like Southern rudeness and a decaying city that destroyed historical landmarks, move here. If you want Southern charm, move elsewhere in Virginia.
Absolutely right ! One of the BEST things that could happen to Richmond is that DC would relocate to San Francisco where it BELONGS...then & only then perhaps Richmond reclaim her Southern Charm
Lol,translate this comment to mean this,my opinion. Destroying historical landmark, someone who is bitter about the Confederate monuments coming down, really?More Southern charm translates to more older politically conservative people who miss the days of the "Old South" with segregation and Jim Crow, smh.Modern, progressive RVA is not going back to any of that sort of thing...
RVA has a wide variety of schools. My kids are well into their mid to late 20's, so I haven't had my finger on the pulse for a while. I always recommend clients do their own research on schools. A quick search will give you a ton of information to look through and find the schools you like best!
VA has the WORST "schools" in the country, especially "Hampton Roads." The entire state is stupid, ugly, poor and violent with an insane amount of crime.
They are honestly not very good. RPS is underfunded and their buildings are crumbling. The nicest elementary school burned down because the fire alarm was faulty and they knew about it. This city is a shit show and with the exploding cost of housing it’s not getting any easier to live here

Hi, This video was informative and valuable. I've lived in Seattle for seven years as an artist, and while it's beautiful, it's not for me because Richmond isn't like Seattle, Washington's people have changed since COVID-19, and Richmond is friendlier. I grew up in NYC and had family in Gettysburg and Williamsburg in the 1980s, but I last went there a while ago. One of my acquaintances in Falls Church enjoys living there. I would have to prepare a lot, but your list and information were helpful, and the city seemed lovely with its airport, train, walkways, parks, and courting potential- and not a transportation calamity! I like downtown, provided it's not too gentrified, with poorly built new buildings, etc. I love riding my electric scooter and driving sometimes since I don't drive much and regularly fly domestically and internationally. I'd want to know about the people's kindness, medical facilities, and doctors' quality. I'm far from moving, but for the first time, this city appears like a lovely "hidden gem" in the East without terrible weather. I am gathering information on moving to Richmond. Thank you!

Richmond is not Mid Atlantic, it's a definitely Southern city , but it's decaying rapidly, crime ridden, and all the major historical sites are demolished. Its fast becoming a Southern Detroit. So I don't see any positives. I don't think it will ever come back. My family is old Richmond and we are desiring to move to VA Beach.
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND that would be so fun! I love to see cities like that. It really slows you down and makes you notice things you wouldn't otherwise. 😎
When I see people say Richmond is bad for taking down (Confederate) monuments or "awful crime", I almost like the city more! Usually these people complaining aren't the kind of people you want in your city anyways ;) a little too right wing for me
The best kept secret city in the USA ever Richmond is like having the best of all worlds 🌎 I call it the melting pot of the mid Atlantic perfect location right in the middle of everything north, south ,east and west extremely diverse, Hispanic, Hindu, african, Asian, Caucasian African American, you name it has all races living there so cultural so much to see explore more restaurants then days of the year and oh my such a walkable city excellent transportation system downtown the pulse takes you all around runs every 10 to 15 min The Main street train station u can hop on downtown and take a ride up to Dc our Nations capital right up the road ,downtown is amazing from broad street to carytown to the fan district, to Scott's Addition row houses like up north restaurants on every corner in the Fan district, boutiques and quaint stores line Carytown I could go on and on I love ❤️ RVA ❤️ 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖.
Hindus are members of a religion, not an ethnicity. But you are right in that there's a sizable community from India, as well as from Pakistan, Iran, Armenia and a few from various parts of the Near, Middle, and Far East, as well as from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Spain (though not yet as main streamed as in California say), some Europeans, and a good number of Americans of various ethnicities and from different states that have relocated here. Unfortunately, some drivers are rude and unpredictable and do dangerous sudden things like turning left from a right lane or double park not caring that they're putting others at risk of getting hit or that there's a spot to park right next to them and race and zigzag on the streets and highways. This is surprising given the small size of the city. Richmond has improved some in terms of food. 18 years ago you couldn't get decent bread and Mexican and Chinese food was awful! Now there's an abundance of decent bakeries and a couple of good Chinese and authentic Mexican places. But the restaurant scene though abundant in numbers doesn't live up to the hype in terms of quality and is often inconsistent. There are some good restaurants but a lot seem to have a very limited and traditional southern palate and be very meat oriented and pricey. Even the ones that are supposed to be French or Italian are seriously lacking in authenticity, variety, and flavor. And, though I'm not vegetarian, we need more affordable places with vegetarian food and regular restaurants with interesting vegetarian options. Right now we only have a couple casual ones and though they're not outrageously expensive they're not cheap either. The only cheap food is usually barbecue or burgers and isn't very healthy. But the river is beautiful, the museums and festivals great and the population becoming more diverse and interesting. Crime has gone up a fair bit but I think that's a national trend in many cities and has more to do with an extreme and unjust distribution of wealth and tax breaks for the wealthy. Though it's still worrisome and getting scary in some central areas. I wanted to try the Pulse from the arts district at 4pm a couple of weeks ago and Broad st. felt so unsafe and shady even in daylight that I had to quickly walk south to Franklin and get a Lyft there and I've lived in Oakland California and in Barcelona and Mexico City and traveled to other countries in Europe alone and I'm not easily scared. Finally whoever "manages" street repairs either doesn't have a clue or doesn't exist. There are often multiple streets in the same direction blocked at the same time which makes a drive that would normally take 15 minutes take 25. Also recently their solution for everything is a roundabout in streets that are far too narrow for it. Examples: the street from Rocket's Landing to Dock street before the Ship lock park and several in Church hill north of Broad, e.g. on Jefferson. Too many potholes except in the wealthiest neighborhoods, food deserts, and with only a couple of exceptions in the wealthy neighborhoods low quality public schools in the rest. There's a huge shortage of teachers right now. Although that too is a national trend caused by low salaries, large class size, lack of appreciation for education and crazy ignorant extreme right wing people forcing their agenda on teachers and putting them in impossible situations with no support.
Richmond is an amazing city underrated upbeat restaurants on every corner downtown in the fan district row houses reminds me of D.c , Newark, Philly and New York oh and the cost of living is outstanding so much to do and see not to slow not to fast just right it's like the melting pot of the mid Atlantic extremely diverse perfect location DC Philly and New York are just a drive away then you have VA beach Williamsburg outlets amusement parks I'm telling you it's the best of all worlds 🌎
@@Novasterling No I'm not saying that Richmond is exactly like a northern city no but it's not like the cities down south I've been to both and Richmond has more similarities to the north as far as vibe is concern than Charlotte and Raleigh etc now that's just my opinion put it this way it's not as fast as up north but it's not as slow as down south but your right it's nothing like the northern cities I agree with u on that.

RVA also has those huge Palmetto bugs. Giant. Usually see them after a rain storm.
If you don’t like them, you’d hate our bird feeders after dark. I shake them off like a bag of chips! Good thing we have a palmetto killer named Podito!
Music is too loud.
@Jay57T- thanks for your comment. What music are you referring to?
Are you from Richmond? Because you have a Richmond accent. Especially since you used the word rivah, which is something a person from central Virginia would say.
Whoo- hoo ! It’s happened- I’m officially home grown! I’m a Virginia girl and RVA has been my home the longest.
I was in Richmond during the 80s and found this video to be a most helpful update. I didn’t realize how extensive the revitalization has been over the years. When I visit, I generally see friends and stick to old haunts. Thinking to move back to VA from the west coast and Richmond is definitely on my list, as is the VA Beach area. Thanks!
We’d love to re-introduce you to RVA! If Virginia Beach is more your flavor, have an amazing team that you can connect with as well. In fact , we have a Richmond VS Virginia Beach video that is releasing soon. Stay tuned!
keep your gentrification out of this city!!!
Thanks for your comment
Especially the white people.
How are the suburbs of Richmond for singles and retirees?
Well the suburbs are boring. If you are a single person you should live in the fan or shockhoe bottom neighborhood.
😊Thank you😊
What about an Art District? Careers
We certainly have an active arts district , thanks to the HUGE influence of VCU. VCU is also one of the largest employers in the RVA area.
Very informative... thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Glad you liked it!
Wait you guys moving this my childhood home

Take me to the river...wash me in the water...
WOW.I NEVER THIS.
Richmond manages to combine the most negative aspects of the Northeast and the worst of the South. Its like Memphis meets Newark. If you like Southern rudeness and a decaying city that destroyed historical landmarks, move here. If you want Southern charm, move elsewhere in Virginia.
What would you like to see in place of the monuments?
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND Nothing, they should never have been moved in the first place.
Absolutely right ! One of the BEST things that could happen to Richmond is that DC would relocate to San Francisco where it BELONGS...then & only then perhaps Richmond reclaim her Southern Charm
@@ncbbq1 i honestly don't feel DC influence in rva much. Even up in Fredericksburg , my cousins there say it's like DC is another world to them.
Not everyone
Thanks for your comment. Where are you moving to in 2023/2024?
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND you’re welcome
Good
Would you tell me how good is the Public Schools beside the James river and rocks?
RVA has a wide variety of schools. My kids are well into their mid to late 20's, so I haven't had my finger on the pulse for a while. I always recommend clients do their own research on schools. A quick search will give you a ton of information to look through and find the schools you like best!
VA has the WORST "schools" in the country, especially "Hampton Roads." The entire state is stupid, ugly, poor and violent with an insane amount of crime.
It says "2 Replies". Why is only one showing???.... Tell the truth about the schools!....
They are honestly not very good. RPS is underfunded and their buildings are crumbling. The nicest elementary school burned down because the fire alarm was faulty and they knew about it. This city is a shit show and with the exploding cost of housing it’s not getting any easier to live here
@@file13hxc I know!... Just wanted her to come clean about the schools. I taught in Richmond at the secondary level. We sent children to private schools.... and than a bit of homeschooling. No longer in Richmond. She's a realtor and naturally wants to sell houses. I would not recommend Richmond. Maybe Glenn Allen, but that's about it.
Convince them all. These transplants coming to NY to do the same, I will pay handsome rewards for transplant relocations to WV
Thank you for your comment.
Richmond,Virginia has the most AWESOME black men.Very strong men.Inside and out.❤❤
Its a shame that all the history is gone (all the statues) because of 1 man going to prison 8 time and putting a gun to a pregnant women but no one says anything about that VERY SAD but the City politicians need the votes
Thank you!
@jwharnisch- thanks for your comment! You must come check out RVA! Keep watching the videos; it will give you the best idea on what folks are like in my river city. We’re friendly! Please jump on my calendar so we can chat more : go.oncehub.com/ErinMelton
I really hope they do something nice in place of the monuments. Not sure if there is a plan at this point. What part of VA Beach are you looking at?
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND I hope they restore the monuments to their proper place. I am looking at Pungo area.

I think I need to take a bike ride sometime soon, that looks divine.
We should get bikes and do a city tour!
@@LIVINGINRICHMOND that would be so fun! I love to see cities like that. It really slows you down and makes you notice things you wouldn't otherwise. 😎
You'll be robbed and attacked within 3 blocks. Horrible place.
When I see people say Richmond is bad for taking down (Confederate) monuments or "awful crime", I almost like the city more! Usually these people complaining aren't the kind of people you want in your city anyways ;) a little too right wing for me
Moving to Shockoe in a month from northern VA. It’s such a beautiful city. Looks to still be growing
The Richmond area in general is growing with or without a crazy market. What part of NOVA are you coming from?
Its not beautiful any more.
I passed through this Mid-Atlantic city on my way to the south and it wasn’t bad, but could use some more things to do.

Richmond is the South! DC and Baltimore maybe Mid Atlantic, Richmond is not!

Thank you so much for your comment! I love RVA too!
Could not have said it better. When I hear tax rates from up north, my eyes almost pop out of my head! 😳
