The fact that Jon took the time to do comprehensive breakdowns of two different versions of a 90 hour game that game out a few years ago when one of them was only in Japanese... shows his dedication to gaming and us.
Well he only showed the first few hours of the game, everything he showed can be played in the demo. Still a lot of work though.
It's mainly footage of the first hour or so from the game, but it is nice to see a good comparison.
Or maybe it shows how much they don't have anything better to do.
It show's the quality of Dragon Quest, and XI more specifically, to warrant it. Jon got into the series around the same time as I did, so it's lovely to see it having a similar effect on him :)
Jon seems like the sort of guy who could do just about anything. Lucky for us, he's a fellow Nintendo fan and made that his profession.
So you're telling me they made a 90s game with an early 2000s remake, and a late 2010s HD remake all at the same time??? What a concept
The 3ds is fantastic. I still remember Christmas morning when I woke up and saw that there was a brand new 3ds left for me. I played Mario 3d land for the entire day and didn't regret a second of my time spending choices :)

My favourite system, bar none. If you've never played the Etrian Odyssey games, or likeness, it'll be harder to work in the map development on the screen without using a split screen system. I'm going to miss that. I rather liked having that bottom screen, and the flip aspect, especially the bulky New 3DS. It feels soooo damn secure and impenetrable (unlike my poor DS Lite, whose hinge is held together by a piss poor, but necessarily so, glue job...just to assure it's multiple cracks don't lead to future breaks).
@@NYCJoeBlack ayyy we got a fellow hunter
@@michaelsnyman2800 - Yep!!
i hope there's some fans out there willing to translate this version, i'm sure there's a lot of us that would love to play it
I don't think anyone is doing something on it. People always come up with "it's already on Switch" when you bring this subject
I remember reading about a group of people doing one but if I remember correctly they stopped when the Switch version came out
But hey if the ds version of Nino kuni can get a fan translation years after, I'm sure someone will step up and do one eventually
@@acanthoscurriageniculata7141 yeh thats always the rebuttal given wenever this version is brought up. which doesnt hold up as both versions are completely different experiences. same story sure but diff execution
@@executivedata7 yeah, this video proves it
Yup we need a translation
This makes me wanna replay DQXIS. Incredible game
I literally just finished it this weekend for the first time
Beat this twice. Ps4 and Switch!
I have over 1165 hours in DQ11S
Love that game to bits
@@thembill8246 hey, me too! I was scared to face the final boss after it destroyed me. I returned more than a year later.
Same. I've been thinking about it a lot lately
I think the one thing about the 3DS version that I want more than anything else, is that the luminary actually expresses himself and makes facial reactions appropriate to what's going on. This is something the playable character in Dragon Quest 8 and Dragon Quest 10(from version 3 and onward at least) do very well but 11 HD seems to struggle with
Android 17 was never the emotional type.
It was probably due to Eight's, Ten's, and 3ds Eleven's faces being png textures rather than fully rendered 3d face models. Facial expressions don't show as clearly on a fully 3d rendered face.
@@Schmoseph tell that to ever other cast member in 11 though. Everyone else is still plenty expressive in the HD version
@@ExalinExcels Depends on the character. More cartoony characters like Sylvando and Rab are slightly easier to animate facial expressions on, while characters like Eleven, Jade, and Hendrik are a little harder.
@@Schmoseph yes. But still far and away from what should have been preventing a smile
I bought and completed this on release, my first entire playthrough of an untranslated JRPG. One of my favourite 3DS games and it's such a shame the West didn't get it.
It must've sucked that you had to buy a Japanese 3DS just to play this since the console is region locked unlike the Switch.
Lol did you ever hear of moding ;)
@@HandheldGamer1991 I'm aware of modding but I as a consumer should not have to go out of my way to do such a thing just because the manufacturer doesn't want to let me play games not for my region.
@@GenerationZ313 it's okay. I bought the Japanese Metal Slime N2DSXL and I love it, and I've gotten quite a few Japanese exclusives since then too. :)
@@NicolausCamp Nice, the slime consoles variants are awesome, that and the monster hunter ones.
This is so cool! It reminds me of those ports we used to get from home consoles to Gameboy Advance, where so much had to change to get the game to fit on that platform. With the Switch and portable gaming in general becoming so capable, perhaps this will be one of the last games to get the official demake treatment.
that and the transition from 6th generation to 7th generation was also interesting as some games on the newer platform were completely different from their last generation counterparts. Games such as Splinter Cell Double Agent and Sonic Unleashed immediately come to mind.
Seeing DQXI on 3ds and hearing the comforting and very endearing soundtrack just makes me want to go replay DQXI a 3rd time, my favorite game from the last generation. Incredible game and probably my favorite Dragon Quest title so far, very happy and glad to see the series still as striving as ever.
Jon, this is far and away my favorite video you have ever done for Nintendo Life. I absolutely love the 3ds and the fact that we never got this port really hurts. The level of detail and care you put into this video, in order to accurately depict how faithful, but also unique DQ XI is to the franchise was awesome. If any game made me want to start learning Japanese it would be this game. I will be adding this to my collection at some point. I can only hope that this gets an English Patch someday. Incredible video, and incredible game.
Someday perhaps. Puyo Puyo Chronicles for 3ds got an amazing fan translation. Still, that’s a lot of work.
It's funny you say that. I moved to Japan 5 years ago and couldn't read or speak Japanese at the time. I purchased this game and found that it wouldn't play on my US 3DS, so I purchased a [Japanese] "new" 2DS to play it -- 3DS/2DS software is region locked apparently. Luckily, the difficult kanji also include furigana, so I was able to study hiragana and katakana over the course of 2 days in order to type the lines into Google translate. Thanks to this game, I was motivated to learn two new alphabets lol.
Really was a great surprise!
@@sinister_sushi Thats awesome! Gives me motivation to do the same. Were you able to finish the game?
@@Hibernial True on all statements!
My favorite feature is the text. If you are using the old school mode it will show the text in an older pixel style similar to super famicom no furigana. When you utilize the 3D mode it switches screens to the modern font with furigana. So nostalgic! I love it.
We are planning to make a translation of the 3ds version. We hope that it'll go smoothly.
any progress??????
@@guutenks2498 as of now. We still need a bunch of texts to pump in. But it is still alive. I'll say that it won't come for years since we are short on manpower and will.
@Stellar I-DLE damnnnnn. Well aye thanks anyway and good luck.

The 3DS version I really wanted to play. One thing I loved about the 3DS system, was that the games looked really unique.
3DS games are much easier on my eyes than many or most Switch games.
It's the "same" game but different enough that it's perfect for a replay of DQXI if you're ever up for it.
Also, the combat is actually different! In the 3DS version you choose everyone's commands before the turn begins, while in the HD version the characters perform their actions immediately. 3DS's can be much more punishing, but the game thankfully isn't too difficult (as it didn't have the Draconian Quest settings).
(You can set the characters to behave how you'd like in the HD original, just go to tactics and change to follow orders for complete control.)
@@poncenbysmithe8828 I know, but that's not what I meant. You can kinda see it if you play 2D mode in the S version. In the 3DS version, in combat, you select all four party members' actions at the start of each turn (if you're directly controlling them like you said) and then watch the turn unfold, with faster characters going first and whatnot. In the HD version your characters' turns come up individually and they perform their actions as soon as you input them, which means you can actually react in the middle of a turn and change your strategy accordingly. It's a small change but it makes a world of difference for the harder difficulties.
@@Hawlo That's really neat actually. I always liked how they changed up the battle system in 11 to make agility a much more useful stat, but playing the classic way where each characters' actions are selected at the start of the turn makes boss fights or fights against strong monsters so much more suspenseful with each turn!
When it was first announced, the 3DS version was the one that was most appealing to me. It was just such a unique concept being able to play the game (partly) on both screens, and still is now.
You’re right about there not being much info on this in the West…this is the first time I learned the 2D/3D simultaneous view doesn’t last the entire game, only the opening
Same.
Same.
I’ve always wanted to know more about this version.
I really hope a fan translation project pops up for the 3ds version. I ordered the metal slime 2ds xl and this game back when it came out and I enjoyed it much more than the base ps4 version at the time. I enjoyed how the retro DQ 1-10 areas had more individual art style differences to match their original game rather than what we got here with the XI S version that just made everything into that DQ3/6 SNES style spriteart.
My heart was broken when they said 3DS version is Japan exclusive. I love the PS4 version but that 3DS DQXI looks so beautiful
Reminds me of the early 2000s when games used to have different versions across home console (PS2/Xbox/GC) and handled (GBA, DS). Especially movie tie-in games and those licensed by THQ.
What was really neat I suppose was that if both versions were good and you had both a console and handheld you were getting two great games on the same day.
It's such a beautiful looking game, and I find there's something very charming about the midi instruments compared to the switch version's real orchestra
Well you can switch to the midi on the switch. That's how I played it.
@@bern9642 ah I forgot about that!
Awesome video! An extremely underrated port/version. The thought and consideration that went into the 3DS version is astounding. I imported a japanese 3DS just to play this game!
I was a diehard 3DS fan at the time this was released, and it was incredibly disappointing it was never localized.
They both look fantastic but the 3ds version looks like it would make me happier while playing it
I hope we get a fan translation of this game down the line, I'd love to play it and compare every version for myself. The game is so good it warrants multiple playthroughs anyway
Yeah, I dunno. On one hand, making a translation patch would be much easier than normal, since they could likely just "cut and paste" the script from another version. OTOH, it would still be a ton of work given how ludicrously huge the game is, and for something that very few people would be likely to play. When there are still so many J-only games which are completely unavailable in other languages, I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort for a port which is basically just a neat novelty.
Everything was canceled when the Switch version came out.
I'm still bummed to this day that we never got to play this version in the west, this was legit one of my most anticipated 3DS games. Ah well, at least the 3DS has VII and VIII and the Switch has XI S I guess, but I've always wanted to play DQXI 3DS
Heartbreaking that Dragon Quest as a brand didn't get big in the west until around the time DQXI S dropped. If the franchise had really shown its legs outside of Japan in the DS era, maybe there would have been enough of an incentive to bring DQXI on 3DS over.
Really wish we got this version, it looks incredibly fun and charming.
I have a lot i can say. First, the chibi art is adorable in the 3ds version. I’m actually thinking about getting a japanese 2ds and the japanese dragon quest 11 to play it, second thanks for sharing this. The little details make the game really interesting. Third, i have a switch, but i still think the 3ds games are amazing, and wish nintendo still makes game for that system.
Playing dq11 on switch my first jrpg. This game is indescribably beautiful and good
Have you moved onto any other JRPGs since then? I recommend installing a PS2 emulator and grabbing Dragon Quest 8 and the fan translation of Dragon Quest 5, both amazing games that are easily as good or better than DQ11
My 3ds still sits on my nightstand, it’s the best handheld console and I’m still finding new games and series that are keeping me on the console
Edit: shoutout to SMT, MHS, and the dragon quest games
I recently bought the 3d and ds DQ games. I bought Zelda PH and even the third Goldensun game. Im not done with the 3ds anytime soon.
It's so much better than Switch handhald imo. Makes a huge difference when all the games were designed from the ground up to look great on small screens, while Switch are mostly just console ports that were designed for TVs.
Ni no Kuni was the other notable game that had a PS3 and DS version that played differently.
Ni no Kuni PS3 was released almost a year after the DS version tho.
Both versions of DQXI were released at the same time, on July 29 2017, there was even a PS4+3DS double pack of the game.
It's kinda crazy in that most DQ games (or rather, the 3D DQ games) have two full versions: one developed earlier for home consoles, and one developed later for handhelds.
And usually they aren't mere ports: DQ7, 8 and 11 had to be completely remade to fit on the 3DS from the PS1, PS2 and PS4 respectively (DQ9 is sadly stuck on the DS, and I'm not sure of DQ10's status due to being Japan exclusive, but I'm sure there are a couple of versions, due to the amount of available consoles its on).
DQ11 now has 3 fully made different versions: the original on PS4, the 3DS version (which naturally had to be different, since no way a PS4 game would be running on the 3DS) and now a Switch version (which was remade due to engine differences, and has different, somewhat less detailed character models and enviroments, and a boatload of new content, which ironically made that version be ported once again to PS4/Xbox/PC)
DQVIII wasn't remade, it was a port.
How well does DQ8 3DS hold up to the PS2 version? I've only played it on iPad and PS2. iPad would be my preferred port if only it had controller support...
I didn’t even know to follow the dog! I had to be told by the villager to follow the stepping stones!
Perhaps the biggest difference between the two versions is how much more expressive the faces of the characters are on 3DS
Ghost trick, nice my dude
The emotions are bigger but the HD version has more nuance in its acting and is able to express way more. Expressiveness is not just about big emotions, it's about smaller ones too. Feels really weird to look at the 3DS version snap between different face shells and say that it's more expressive than the game where the facial animation is so deliberate and meticulous.
I still think I enjoy the switch version more, from an art perspective, but the fact that the 3ds version exists is still really interesting, and seeing the character models all chunky like that is kind of funny too. I also kind of like the huge overworld in the switch version because it makes it feel like more of an "adventure", like you really have to travel to get places - I guess it kind of feels more like a ""world"" to me. Makes it more expansive. It's certainly a "both are good in their own ways" kind of deal.
Ive always loved the art style on the 3ds version
Being a Dragon Quest video makes it an instant yay :)
The 3DS introduced me to Dinosaur Office. I love this system.
Oh shoot. Had forgotten about that....they really were desperate at the beginning. Once they had the price drop and 3ds took off they forgot about all those amazing videos.
I appreciate this channel more and more as the most unexpected content comes out. THis just makes me more sad as we will never get this gem in the west.
Such an interesting piece of software! I’m intrigued on how this works under the surface (programmatically speaking) since I assume planning for this must have been really challenging.
In a different note this is a good representation of my general distaste for the Diamond/pearl remakes. It feels we went from DQ11 2D to the 3Ds version, when they should’ve targeted the Switch version. (Mind you, not a criticism of dragon quest, the very fact they made 2 very comparable versions is amazing)
I remember seeing it during the original announcement for DQXI, and was actually the version I was going to go for. My first, and favorite Dragon Quest game was DQIX, and the 3DS version took the look of the DS game and just massively improved on it. It's a shame we never got it.
Dragon Quest XI is one of the best video games of all time.
easily
Was literally playing Persona Q2 on the 3DS and now I see this just before I attempt to sleep !
Also the Tockle town still has remnants of features exclusive to the 3DS version. There’s a red Tockle guarding a cave, this was for street pass, it’s still there in every other version but unusable.
One of the most underrated 3ds games. I have a japan ver 3ds and played this game before buying the NSwitch, and I totally loved it (maybe except for the no-voice-acting part)
Both versions are technical marvels IMO
John please talk more about Dragon Quest… I really need this
I'm sort of glad this game wasn't localized. It made Dragon Quest XI S's launch all the more magical on the Switch.
The 3DS version of XI is the one I wanted to most.
I really wish we got this in the west. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the Definitive Edition, but this would have been a hoot of an experience playing on 3ds.
It's sadly they don't translate the 3ds version
Wait, this game had a 3DS port? Oh my god I love this.
3DS, game never released in the West, JRPG... Knew this was a Jon video before even clicking. Thanks for such strange but lovely content, Jon!
I knew about its existence, but this nice video is the first time I get to see clearer the changes
Wish we got this version, along with the Liquid Metal Slime New 2DS
This game graphics remind me so much of DQ IX
This is making me really want to play DQ11 again. I got up to the timeskip, and stopped (too much life stuff going on) and then I never picked it up again...
I remember when this was showcased on a Nintendo Direct years ago!
I visited Japan the year this game came out and was really surprised when I saw someone playing it on the train! I also saw ads on the TV all the time, and when I came home I was confused that I couldn't find it on anything other than the PS4
Now this is good content Jon!!
I really hope that someday this gets a fan translation. There's already been fan translations of Dragon Quest Monster Joker 3 & Terry's Wonderland so it makes sense for this to get the same treatment.
i was looking into DS / 3DS games on amazon and stuff these past 2 days and omg, why are Dragon Quest and Pokemon games soooo damn expensive.
3ds hacks
You were late to the party. They were affordable 5 years ago
3DS version of this game is so cool! Love the graphic style.
That blows my mind. Dragon Quest XI is one of my favorite games ever so
I don't know what it is, but I can always tell a "Jon" video the second I see the thumbnail.
Great work, Jon! I just recently played Dragon Quest XI, heard mention of the 3DS version, and was also fascinated by its existence.
If there's fan translation of this I'd rather play 3ds version than any others.
Still disappointed we didn’t get it
Man the 3ds version looks so cool! I wish we get a fan translation or something at least
Dragonquest 9 was by far the best one
Jon: "Look at this icon, it's so cute.
*Thumbnail covers it*
While I'm happy we got the other versions of this game, this is the version I wish did get an international release back when they revealed them. Especially since I owned the console for it.
If I recall correctly the 3DS version entered development in the middle of the PS4 version cause Square Enix wasn't sure if the PS4 would carry DQ11 by itself in Japan. Oddly enough I'm surprised the 3DS version of DQ11 never got a mobile port. The 3DS remake of DQ7 is on mobile phones though only in Japan. Apparently it got rid of overworld encounters. Speaking of, I'm still hoping we get a port or remake of DQ9. I don't even care if it's a port to mobile phones that game deserves to be on more than the DS.
I absolutely love Dragon Quest XI, to the point I have both the Switch version and a Steam version. I wish the 3DS game had been localized because I would have bought it a 3rd time for that handheld as well!
Also it was kind of funny for me how I just got back into the game again this week and this video just so happened to come out today. Perfect timing!
they could have done it but considering that there was no 3DS game that sold over a million copies in the west after the Nintendo Switch release in March 2017 it's completely understandable. I mean we got Persona Q2 in 2019 in the west and I doubt that game sold well at all.
For anyone that wants to know Project COE over on RUclips did do some documentation is many other differences from the 3ds version so best go there as well guys :D
This kinda reminds me of the 90s/early 2000s where games on different systems and other handhelds could be the same game but wildly different.
I was so excited to hear about DQ11 coming to the 3DS & the special Edition DQ metal slime 3DS only to be really let down they were both Japan exclusive. Also thanks Jon for this neat piece of content !
I remember being bummed originally that the 3DS version didn't come out in the West but kind of forgot about it when I heard the Switch version was playable in 2D. Still, having seeing all these differences I wish the 3DS still made its way over here as it'd be nice to own as a DQ collector. Going to have to import this one. Thanks for taking the time to make this showcase on the 3DS version and it's differences Jon!
This is so unbelievably interesting I can’t believe it exists and it looks glorious
I really hope someone can make an English patch of this. I know it'd be a HUGE undertaking though
I didn't know this existed! I thought there was just the classic 8bit version.
Man, I miss the 3DS. Still kicking myself for not picking up a 2DS XL from one of those last batches a few years back. Now my broken launch 3DS just collects dust in perpetuity.
Gosh, I love this game. I played through the first act on 3DS only using a cheap translation app for my smartphone, just to get even more gameplay out of this beautiful thing called Dragon Quest XI.
Idk if people had a saying on this decision, but the constant spam of "kill the 3ds" during the early days of Switch probably gave an impression that people really didn't want the game here, but i think its more costs of localization and the last games not selling at all. I think that the 3DS could've co-existed with Switch as the cheapest alternative, but sadly all we have now is the Game&Watch systems that for some odd reason costs twice what a 2DS was at its last moments.
I was one of the people "in the know" about the JP 3DS version. It was given to me as a Christmas gift a while back. When DQ11 in Japan released they sold a "Double Pack" that had both PS4 and 3DS versions. And how rare is that? To have a box containing 2 games on completely different consoles?
Another relatively unknown feature is that the JP PS4 and 3DS versions had a password system. You could start your game on one version, and then use a password to continue on another. It wasn't a save transfer per-se, you didn't start exactly the same as you were on the previous version and it only worked up till about Act 2. But it was still a really cool feature that the west never saw.
The Yochi's also work a lot different in the 3DS version and there's a whole mini game the west never got.
That's really cool actually. Especially the double pack. Don't think I've 'ever' seen that before.
There are so many darn versions of DQXI and it’s still fairly new..
I found this video late but awesome video. So sad we don't get more mainline Dragon Quest games on current gen consoles. We need some remasters!
This was an awesome comparison Jon. Man would've loved this and Dragon Quest X here but no way we getting those.
As somebody who grew up with 3DS games and now has a nostalgia for these types of graphics, I can confirm that it is in fact neat.
Waiting for the english patch
Probably not going to happen
@@randomreviews4278 sadly
You can save transfer from 3DS to the Japanese PS4 version and back. This was one game like monster hunter 3 ultimate that developers wanted you to be able to play on the go and at home on a nicer looking version, pre switch. The 3DS had so much potential for this, but once the WiiU bombed Nintendo dumped them both. The 3DS was probably even meant to be used as a second gamepad on the WiiU. But we never saw it.
I was so disappointed that this wasn't ported onto the 3DS. Love the other installments on the system. Was really looking forward to it.
Really hoping this gets a fan translation rom patch in the near future ala Jump Ultimate Stars and Ni No Kuni DS
The path from Cobblestone to Heliodor has two routes on the HD version, but only one route on the 3DS version.
2 out of 3 aint bad....glad i at least have those on ps4
When DQXI was being developed I wanted the 3ds version the most. I really wanted the 2d mode. I'm glad we eventually got the 2d mode in the definitive edition.
I play 11 S on my Xbox One S with Gamepass Ultimate. It’s a great game.
I just played DQ11 for the first time a couple weeks ago, it quickly became my favourite game ever
I know this is about the 3DS version, but man. This Switch version is truly a magnificent title to showcase how well a game can run on the Switch. It just looks so freaking good.
i'ts only a month that i lost all my 3ds data and hacks (also piracy stuff, my country is undeveloped and nintendo don't sell their games, also trying to import is so much difficult), and i already miss all the games that i played, and those that i haven't got the chance to play. 3ds is such a great console with the one of the best library of games, including virtual console and ds games :(
I remember waiting for the translated game for the 3ds, but i get a switch and then just go for that version of the game
