After he wrote "Fire and Rain", his friend Carole King wrote "You've got a friend" for him based on the line "When I could not find a friend". You should give it a listen, very upbeat.

    here's a cut and paste:
The “Suzanne” mentioned in the lyrics to “Fire and Rain” wasn’t Taylor’s girlfriend or fiancée, but rather an acquaintance (Suzanne Schnerr) whom he had met while he was a teenager in New York in 1966-67, performing with friends Danny Kortchmar and Joel O’ Brien, as part of a group called The Flying Machine. As quoted in Timothy White’s biography of him, Taylor said that “I knew Suzanne well in New York, and we used to hang out together and we used to get high together; I think she came from Long Island. She was a kid, like all of us.”
A few years later, after Taylor had decamped to London and was finishing up his debut album for the Beatles’ Apple Records label, he found out that Suzanne had committed suicide several months earlier, and that his friends had withheld the news from him so as not to let it distract him and derail his career.

This song is about a friend's suicide. When Carole King heard this future-classic, she was so moved by it, she wrote You've Got A Friend in response & gave that song to JT to record. It became another one of his greatest hits. One of hers, too. Her own version was almost as big a hit as his, & they have performed the song many times together. Not a bad performance among them!!
BTW - It was James' song from his first album that inspired the first line of another famous song by George Harrison: Something In The Way She Moves.

The first part, was about Taylor's friend Suzanne Schnerr, who died while Taylor was in London, working on his first album, after being signed to Apple Records. Friends at home, concerned that it might distract Taylor from his big break, kept the tragic news from him, and he found out six months later.

I heard an interview several years ago where he explained that this song was actually written in three parts. The first part was about his childhood friend (Suzanne) who took her own life while he was overseas recording his debut album. He didn't actually learn of her death until about 6 months later. The second part of the song deals with his personal struggles with depression and addiction. The third part was talking about the new found fame and fortune that was all of the sudden thrusting him into the spotlight and had nothing to do with a plane crash. The line "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" refers to a band called The Flying Machines that he was briefly part of before his big break.

And Lex, even after over 12 years of my brother being gone, and me turning 50 soon, I still haven't gotten the crying out when I hear this song. I'm someone who focuses mainly on the music rather than the lyrics. I prefer electric over acoustic, and vocals are not my priority. However, one of my exceptions to all that is James Taylor. His playing is stunning. His voice occupies a certain space in my head, and I actually pay attention to his lyrics. I love the changes, and the single-note drone of the cello when it comes in gives me chills. My parents had a Best of James Taylor cassette when I was very little (maybe around 3-8 years old). I grew up in England and I remember sitting in the back of the car travelling through a city at night watching the street lights. I genuinely believed at that moment that we were in America because of James Taylor's voice. It's so rich and American; a certain accent. It's as though it sits ahead of the music which I think was rare back then. Fact: James Taylor was the first act to be signed to The Beatles' Apple record label and was interviewed by Paul McCartney and George Harrison in the late 60s.

Timeless classic. I always thought the song was about a plane crash, but apparently that isn't quite right: the song has three separate verses, the first of which is about a friend's suicide - a theme which runs through the entire song and connects with the hardships of drug addiction and failed musical projects in the other verses.

  • @markbryant5965

Back in 1968, James Taylor began writing it while living in London at age 20 and trying to make it as an artist, having just received a label deal from Apple Records, owned by the Beatles. However, all he had been able to come up with for lyrics were “I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain, I’ve seen sunny days that would never end.” It would not take long before everything fell into place - but it would take some very dark days for the Boston native before the words and music would be finished.
While in England, he received news from home that one of his friends, Suzanne Schnerr had committed suicide. But his loved ones back in America withheld this news from James for six months o as not to disturb his focus on a burgeoning musical career. In a 1971 interview with Petticoat, Taylor said “Suzanne had been going through some severe mental issues to the point she had to be put in an isolation cell at her treatment facility. She could not take it and found a way to take her life.” At the time, it scared James because he was going through a severe bout with depression and drug addiction. He wondered what triggered Suzanne’s suicide and could what he was going through cause him to do the same.
So, he realized he had to do something. A lot of his sadness had come about because of what he felt was a failed musical career with his band “The Flying Machine.” The group never released an album because after recording songs in late 1966 at New York City’s Sound Select Studio, producer Chip Taylor said every tune was of demo quality - even though members said it was the best they could do. Then, he failed with the Beatles’ Apple Records and James said this sent him into an emotional and even a spiritual tailspin. He came back to this country after finding out about Suzanne’s death and went to the Manhattan Hospital for a thorough medical examination, undergoing a series of extensive tests taking about two weeks and requiring his staying there at the facility.
During this time, he wrote a little more until physicians there told him there was nothing wrong with him as far as having any disease - but highly recommending he check himself into a psychiatric hospital. So James did - staying five months at the Austin Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Still with his creative side intact, Taylor said in later interviews, “ The second part of ‘Fire and Rain’ deals primarily with coming back to America, feeling like a total failure with this monkey on my back, and using Jesus as my expression of my desperation in trying to get through this period of life feeling tired and achy all the time. I was not eating or sleeping well, and I was hoping at least heaven was hearing me and there to help me get up each day. Looking back, I think God was the only one who did.”
Taylor continued, “Now back in London - a lot of people don’t know Apple Records had released my first self-titled album, done in the same studio where the Beatles were putting together their White Album. But even though my later hit songs “Carolina on My Mind” and “Something in the Way She Moves” - the label was falling into turmoil and began deciding to purge some unprofitable acts - like me. My album sold poorly because I came back to the states because of my heroin addiction - so there was no way for me to go on tour to promote it and radio stations were hesitant to play songs from a guy in a psychiatric ward.”
James then said, “The third part of the song references ‘sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.’ Now, many over the years have thought this was some sort of lyrics written by a guy high on drugs - but this is the furthest from the truth. The words have to do with having these wonderful aspirations about making in the music world, then getting to record some songs in a studio with my group “The Flying Machine” - and then having it all fall to pieces for a variety of reasons. The demos did get the attention of Peter Asher - producer for the Beatles at the time and they did get me an audition before Paul McCartney and George Harrison and got me my first record deal. But - then my addictions got in the way, and it wasn’t meant to be at this time. I don’t regret it.”
When Taylor was released from Austin Riggs, he began performing again and soon caught the attention of Warner Bros. Records - who quickly signed him to a recording deal. James went on the road to promote his first album release “Sweet Baby James” by the title single did not do well. Warner loved “Fire and Rain” and they released it as a single in August of 1970. It’s stark lyrics were a departure from the mostly uplifting songs on the album - and James was very surprised when the song took off, shooting up the Billboard Charts to a peak of #3 in early 1971. He said, “I never thought such a deeply personal song would appeal to many people and I didn’t think they would have interest in my life. It took me a while to understand mental illnesses and depression and drug addictions are something many families can relate directly or indirectly. I’ve had people come up to me and tell me how it helped them go through such situations.”
“Sweet Baby James” was produced by Peter Asher of the Beatles fame - and he wanted to feature a stripped-down musical approach to all of the songs on the album, especially ‘Fire and Rain.” This sound was established on this track when he called in the musicians Danny Kortchmar (guitar), Russ Kunkel (drums) and Carole King (piano) to rehearse the song in his living room. Kunkel was a rock drummer, but Asher asked him to play with brushes during the rehearsal so as not to disturb the neighbors. When he played with brushes instead of sticks, it brought out a new dimension in the song and established the sound they were looking for. Kunkel and Kortchmar became part of Taylor's touring band and went on to play on classic '70s albums by Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Carole King, who soon established herself as a powerhouse solo artist.
Some other trivia about this classic: In April 2011, Rolling Stone ranked “Fire and Rain” at #227 on its “500 Greatest Songs of All-Time” list. Carole King has stated unequivocally several times over the years that her own classic “You’ve Got a Friend” was inspired by the line in ‘Fire and Rain’: “I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend.” And James performed this song on a fifth-season episode of The Simpsons titled “Deep Space Homer” airing on February 24th, 1994. Taylor sings “Fire and Rain” for a group of astronauts including Homer and Buzz Aldrin from the first moon landing where man walked on the lunar surface. But James changes the line ‘Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground’ to ‘Sweet dreams and flying machines, flying safely through the air’ when Homer realizes the space shuttle everyone is one - is in danger of crashing.

"Flying Machine" was a band that he belonged to in the late 60's. They split up. Hence the literary analogy of a plane crash.

James Taylor performed this at the Concert for New York, shortly after 9/11.
The line "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" took on a new meaning.
So many people said goodbye to their loved ones the morning of 9/11, or maybe didn't get a chance to - but they always thought they'd see each other one more time again.

He was discovered by Paul McCartney and John Lennon, during their talent scout phase. So was Elton John. And maybe David Bowie? Bowie got famous around the time Paul and John were talent scouting, and Bowie was heavily in Mae Pang's book, depicted as a new star hanging out with and getting himself acquainted with the established stars. Pang and Bowie were together when the news came out about Lennon's assassination. Not "together" together, but visiting, hanging out. Or Bowie came to Pang's house to cry with her. The book is here, somewhere. Carly Simon's song "You're So Vain" is about James Taylor. I think they were married at some point.

Taylor...like Cat Stevens and early Van Morrison, to name just 2....has that songwriter's gift of conveying complex and potent emotion, using the simplest of language and accessible metaphor. It's genius really.

If I was stuck on an island and had to choose 3 albums that I could take with me, James Taylor’s greatest hits would be one of them. Funny thing is I am mostly a hip hop head. But there are times when my mood calls for James Taylor, and nothing else will do. my mom used to sing his songs to me when I was very young.

Each verse is actually about something different. The last verse sounds like a plan crash, but it is actually about his disappointment about the breakup of a band he was once in, a band called "The Flying Machines."

Chris O'Dell was an American who came to the UK on a whim and ended up working for Apple records and the Beatles. Initially she started out a "gopher" and one of her first jobs was to look after a new artist signed by Apple named James Taylor. He wrote Fire and Rain in her bathroom.
For one of the most remarkable and yet strangely unknown lives in rock I recommend reading her autobiography.

An anthemic song written during a turbulent time in American history .. late 60s, early 70s and it was linked with the counterculture of that time. Although it’s a highly personal song about addiction and the suicide of a friend, many identified with its wistful, melancholic overtones.
