James Taylor once said he wrote this song in his car after finding out his brother’s wife was pregnant with their first child and would name the baby after James. He was driving to or from their home, I can’t remember which, and wrote this as a lullaby to his namesake nephew
I never knew that lovely story, but it sure fits, thank you.
He retold that story at a concert I attended.
He was diving to thier home to meet his first nephew.
It's such a sweet thing! I heard this at a concert also.
Exactly right. I've always found this to be a very poignant song.
my grandson was born on December 1st. He is called James. The nurse wrote "Sweet Baby James" on his chart.
That album is an absolute masterpiece
Fire and Rain is probably the most famous song that James wrote
James Taylor is so good that the Beatles signed him for Apple records, the first non British artist. He continues to have an amazing career to this day. He and Carol King are lifelong friends and collaborators 😎
Written for his baby nephew, also called James
James is my all time favorite artist. So much that my second son is named Caleb Taylor and he named his son, mu only grandson Eli James.
I met James once and told him of Caleb. James said "Give him my regards won't you?"
Eli came along the next year... he is 14 now and plays guitar...
Throughout my son's preschool years, he would fall asleep each night listening to a cassette tape of James Taylor's Greatest Hits.
Kim J has stated the story about JT writing this for his nephew. He was on his way to visit and I think attend the Christening. James wrote some really great music. One of those incrdedible singer/songwriters that the 70s gave us.
I was lucky enough to hear this song before it was released. He performed at a college bar in Syracuse before the album "Sweet Baby James" came out, but he performed several songs from the album, including this and " Fire and Rain". That was over 50 years ago and since that day I've been a fan!!
Loved Lex's reaction to the "corney" comment... Classic Brad and Lex. 😎
I love James Taylor. His voice soothes me.
Lex you epitomize what all of your supporters understand. Your smile is so genuine and heartfelt. It makes me feel good every time.
we have two daughters, 20 years old and 3 years old... it's different for every kid! Sure, there's certain things that remain the same, but every baby is also so different!
A terrific singer/songwriter. He wrote some of the Seventies most beautiful songs, and recorded some of Carole King's best work.
Brad and Lex, you are going to be the best parents.
if you ever get a chance to see him live, do so. you won't regret it.
He is my all time favorite. He was going from Massachusetts to South or North Carolina to see his nephew.
The song is a cross between a lullaby and a cowboy ode written by James Taylor for his nephew also named James as a gift after he was born.
Used to sing this to my Daughter when she was 3,4,5,6 and maybe older. I was often on repeat as she dozed off. She just came home Friday for the weekend...all of 37 years old and she is still amazing.
I only had one child, a boy, and Danny's Song was the best...sung by ANNE murray , a Canadian superstar. Sang it in the car after taking him to collegec3 hours away. Anne is superb, a cross between country and pop with several hits and a warm voice!
Had this album on an 8-track tape when I was in junior high school (now called "middle school") and played it all the time!
This album was HUGE in 1970 and kicked off a singer/songwriter movement. He was homeless when he recorded it, and a star when "Fire and Rain" was released from it. He was so popular that three of his siblings quickly released albums to ride on his coattails. JT had many hits and is still a very active performer. The album was produced at Apple records by Peter Asher of "Peter and Gordon", and he is now a DJ on Sirius Radio's 60's Gold station.
Incredible songwriter and singer
He'll be 5 min away from me June 13th! CAN'T WAIT!🙋♀️😱❤️🔥❤️🔥🔥🎶💯
Lex is absolutely radiant 💙💚💙💚💙💚💙
I used to sing this to my babies when I was rocking them to sleep…. They’re 29 and 26 now.
When he was at Apple, George Harrison asked to borrow his lyric “Something in the way she moves” for a song he was writing.
One of the best singer/songwriter/musicians of our times. Maybe ever...
Love James Taylor’s music. It’s so soft and chill.
Thanks for always making me smile! You two are a treat.
James Taylor, with his soft-spoken, beautiful, singer, songwriter style, pick a movie and you could have a James Taylor song.❤✌🏽☮️🤲🙏
Taylors first big album opened the floodgates for the singer / songwriters of the 1970's, in 1970. I played this album to death when it was new as a 14 year old.
Gotta love those occasional songs in that'1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3" rhythm of 3/4 time... Let's waltz, what ya say? 😁😁
His mother used to sing a much much shorter version hook basically to him when he was younger, he wrote the full song later when he got older this is from his mouth
I was just at Rob Squads. They said your welcome
First time I became a parent 25 years ago, I rocked my baby to James Taylor all the time. His greatest hits CD was always handy rocking her to sleep 😴
Sang this as a lullaby to my first born, whose middle name was also James. The second baby IS different, at least at first. You want so much to keep your first involved with the second, because you can’t imagine what two will be like. Turns out, your love multiplies. It doesn’t divide. Yeah, I know that’s corny. Moms get to be corny. We have, in our bodies, a portal to another world that allows us to bring new life into this one. So be as corny as you wish. 💙
Thats cool. Love it.
The circle of life is amazing, extremely valid, too. Good Luck!
That's so funny - my first born is also middle-named James and we sang this for him all the time when he was tiny.
I sang this to my youngest grandson when he was little, he isn't named James but I just changed the name in the song to his. James Taylor seems like a caring individual, I don't think he'll mind!!
@@RFWieder Not a bit. I think he’ll highly approve.
Every little moment counts. I have 5...some older than you all..but still every moment counts and is different. Enjoy Jack.😊
Lex, this makes a wonderful lullaby. I sang it to my baby boys, rocking them to sleep . . . you might like to, as well! Sweet, cozy times.
I sang it to my baby girls and they have sung it to their children.
I used to sing this song to all 4 of my daughters when they were babies. I remember so many nights, diapering, nursing, then rocking them back to sleep while quietly singing this song to them. ❤❤❤
I would sing this to my children and then my grandchildren when putting them to sleep. Maybe someday I can sing it to my great grandchildren.
I love this song but somehow I haven't heard it in a long time and memories are flowing in so thanks for the flashback!!
This is my favorite James Taylor song.
Fun to see a happy young couple listening to this as I once did...a long time ago...
Got a baby that can't or won't sleep? This song works every time... 😴
James is a survivor. He probably shouldn't have survived but he did. I believe the second verse of Fire And Rain saved his life.
How exciting this new journey for you.
With my first daughter I was over the moon crazy love for that child
I was so afraid of having a second child because I thought there's no way I could live another baby or human as much as her. 9 years later our second daughter was born and yep! Just as much crazy, insane love.
My oldest just turned 31 this month and the youngest is 22 and I am still over the moon loving these two girls of mine.
My parents used to play this song to me when I was a child
When I bought this album (vinyl) in like...1971, it had a poster of James inside. That poster went on my bedroom wall and stayed there until I moved out...then I took it to my first apartment, where I put it up again. Wish I still had it. You don't get stuff like that anymore. Thanks for reacting to James. Lots of great music from him out there.
So sweet, both y'all and James. May your baby be as sweet and loving.
I sang this to my sweet baby James when he was a baby 23 years ago. Perfect lullaby,
A prefect singer to chill completely. Lovin’ it.
JT always leaves you with a smile.
James Taylor is why Taylor Swift is named Taylor. Her parents loved James Taylor and so do I.
This was my first tune of introduction to James Taylor, it just makes all the tenderness touch you're heart. Thanks Brad and Lex
This song always brings me back home as I was born and grew up in the Berkshires, western Mass.
Such a beautiful, brilliant song.
"St. Judy's Comet" is from Paul Simon's 1973 album There Goes Rhymin' Simon.
It's also one for the baby's first playlist.
Not corny, it's sentimental...totally different! Every little thing is precious both before they're born and after and it's the same for each child you have because they're all different and special. :)
"Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose, won't you let me go down in my dreams.
And rock-a-bye, Sweet baby JACK!" :)
Brad and Lex,James Taylor wrote a beautiful lullaby that would be perfect for your son Jack. The name of this song is. You Can Close Your Eyes 🙂
Brad & Lex, you’ll love his “You’ve Got A Friend”, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)” and “Your Smiling Face”!!!!
He’s one of the great singer/songwriters/guitarists!!
@@TheTaffiaHow Sweet It Is was written by Holland-Dozier-Holland and originally recorded by Marvin Gaye in the early 60s.
His voice is pure velvet!!!
Awesome that Lex found this so relatable. Best of luck to the soon-to-be new parents!
...the doggies--I always loved that phrase in this sweet song....and corny is great, Lex!❤️ You sound so hormonal, though.....🙃..but in the good way😂lucky for Brad😉❤️❤️❤️😉
I used to sing my little baby to sleep with this song every night. Now he's 18.
There's a time that's the last time you pick up your kid. And you'll never know it.
Just saw him, a few months back at Honda Center with Jackson Browne opening. Both played and sounded like they did when I first saw them in the early 80s. Amazing!
More James Taylor please
“Now the first of December is covered in snow. So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston”.. it’ll be covered in snow this weeken, too. Sweet winter dreams to all.
A very appropriate song for you two at this stage in life, is Lightning Flashes, by the band "Live" Deep, moving and incredibly meaningful. I think you'll both get something from it that will last a lifetime.
My favorite JT song by far. That pedal steel has such a sweet sound, can't stop yourself from swayin. ❤️
My favorite song by him - saw him at Universal Studios and his son was the opening act so when they did an encore together and the lights came on I left before traffic got bad and then found out he did a second encore with this song... I was crushed
As a Dad to 6 kids, one would think it gets harder with each child, but for my wife and I, it only got easier.
I love you guys! 👏👏👏👏👏 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Sweet Baby Jack👣👣👣
Sweet baby James ✨✨✨❤️❤️❤️❤️
My brother has a great singing voice, and he used to sing this to put his daughters to sleep at night. They're grown now, I wonder if they remember that and what they think of if they hear this song
Back to the beginnings of a legend.
Love seeing Brad doing the sway....
Rock-a-bye sweet baby James.
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
My dad used to sing this to me when I was 3 and 4 for bedtime
Great one from back in the day.
Love you guys!
Sweet Baby Jack...soon...
@@stanflahaut1893 give it a shot, Stan
Frozen Man...super interesting story and lyrics
Lex, you should hear Danny's Song by Loggins & Messina (Kenny Loggins).
Please listen to Little Ray of Sunshine, by an old Aussie band called Axiom
"Return to Pooh Corner " by Kenny Loggins
If your interested in other great lullabies by terrific musicians, check out Harry Nilsson’s song “Blanket for a sail”.
for something completely different, listen to "Steamroller" by James Taylor
listen to the live version please -- the video is named -- "James Taylor - Steamroller Blues (BBC In Concert, 11/16/1970)"
All the best lullabies mention women and beer.
Hi Lex & Brad
JT has always been a fixture in my life. Try Steamroller Blues!🖖🏼
Is Lex a model for Land's End? or has she ever been. I swear I saw her in a recent catalog.
You guys should check out Neil Diamond’s song Forever in blue jeans
Y’all really need to react to Stray Cat Blues by the Rolling Stones, no body else on youtube has done it and i’d love to see y’all reaction to the raunchy lyrics and guitar
