This song took on brand new meaning for me after September 11, 2001. Mere days after 9/11, Taylor sang it at the Concert For New York-- there were a lot of first responders and surviving loved ones in the audience. The opening lyrics "Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone / Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you..." made me cry like a baby, although I'd heard them a thousand times before. It was as if the song was written about that actual event.

Everyone talks about how poetic he is and how sweet his voice sounds ….. but he’s an even better guitar player. Completely unorthodox in his playing. His “walks” between chords are nearly impossible to duplicate because he uses his fingers almost completely backwards in the chord formations. He’s truly one of the best.

You guys HAD heard James Taylor before this. He was the male voice singing backup on Carole King's Tapestry album. This song was autobiographical. As mentioned, Suzanne was an ex girlfriend that committed suicide. Verse two was a plea for help for his various addictions. Flying Machine, in the 3rd verse, was a failed band from before he hit big.

The bar-room aquired version that I heard was that Suzanne was his ex, and she might have overdosed. James was in London at the time and no one told him she was dead until after he had completed a series of recording studio visits, as people were worried that he might have just walked away in distraction before the recording sessions were finished.

Friend in mental hospital. They tried to keep watch over her but eventually, she found a way. Suzanne the plans they made put an end to you. Fire and rain refer to the electrical shocks and ice bath treatments done in the hospital. Smile a Little smile for Me was the song from Flying Machine. I once heard a DJ explaining the lyrics to this song. He was kind of annoyed that other singers would sing this song and not know the true and personal meaning.

It's about James Taylor's friend named Susan who passed away while he was in London recording his album as well as James' experience with addiction, fame and depression. The Sweet Baby James album is a beautiful album, 1970 was his breakthrough to success. He actually finished writing this song in rehab. The lyrics are beyond, "Sweet dreams and Flying Machines in pieces on the ground" refers to his band, the Flying Machine, that had failed. So the song is about many things happening in his life. Lots of sweet, sad, lovingly warm, melancholy, and contentedly happy sauce to get lost in. 😊😊😊
I think the feeling about him y'all might've been attempting to find/define is "organic " or "natural".. It's like, "Yes, trees exist and grow from the ground up.", and also yes, "James Taylor writes songs." 🤗🤗

My (step) brother passed away suddenly 1 week ago today and we laid him to rest 2 days ago. Today is my (full) brother's birthday. I talked to my Mom and mentioned how odd it was to celebrate the life lived by one brother and 2 days later celebrate the continued life of another. This song really hits today, as he was only 48 and had no known issues (other than that he was a smoker.) All of us thought we'd be seeing him again for birthdays and holidays and graduations and other events, but for now we only see him in photos and memories, and in the faces of his children. Thank you to you both and to "the Universe" for having this be the song for today. ~Be Blessed

Both were recording albums at the same studio, she Tapestry (released Feb.71), he Mud Slide Slim & the Blue Horizon (released April 71). The world was such a different place when this song came out. For those of old enough, we have witnessed a technology revolution that has changed the world like the industrial revolution changed the world. All we had was the radio and the great music that was available at music stores. TV was way more limited back then too before MTV. I remember hearing great music in the radio in my parents car, the radio was on at home too, our stereo, my mom loved music. Hearing the top 40 when I took my skating practice. When I got older my own clock radio was a gem. But we had great music that was easily heard on our free radios, the current top 40 which was always excellent music. A much more simple time with family that was loving before divorce is my memories of this era.

I remember one of my classmates bringing this album to class in junior high. One of my absolute favorites and the song has a sad backstory. See the story in James Taylor's words below:
"“Fire and Rain” has three verses. The first verse is about my reactions to the death of a friend. The second verse is about my arrival in this country with a monkey on my back, and [Won’t you look down upon me,] Jesus is an expression of my desperation in trying to get through the time when my body was aching and the time was at hand when I had to do it. The third verse of that song refers to my recuperation [beating the heroin addiction] in Austen Riggs which lasted about five months.”
In terms of the “death of a friend” this verse of the track refers to Suzanne Schnerr - a friend Taylor met while he was performing with his old band “The Flying Machine” in New York in 1967. In Taylors biography written by Tim White, Taylor discusses Schnerr’s tragic death: “[Suzanne] committed suicide sometime later while I was over in London. At the time I was living with friends, and all three of them were really close to Susie Schnerr. But Richard and Joel and Margaret were excited for me having this record deal and making this album, and when Susie killed herself they decided not to tell me about it until later because they didn’t want to shake me up.
I didn’t find out until some six months after it happened. That’s why the ‘They let me know you were gone’ line came up. And I always felt rather bad about the line, ‘The plans they made put an end to you,’ because ‘they’ only meant ‘ye gods,’ or basically ‘the Fates.’ I never knew her folks but I always wondered whether her folks would hear that and wonder whether it was about them.”

You guys have to hit “Your Smiling Face” for your next James Taylor song! It’s a little more upbeat than this…

A little more upbeat?!? A public hanging would be more buoyant! This one is a back breaker!! Still great--but damn!

This song spurs many emotion's and memories. In 1970, the year this came out, my good friend died in a car crash. He was 16, and I was 15. The line "Sweet Dreams and Fine Machines in Pieces On The Ground" gets me every time. To this day, I honor his memory. I did "Always Think I'd See Him Again."

This is one of my mom’s favorite songs. She was in the hospital earlier this year recovering from colon cancer surgery, and I learned how to play this for her. The first night she was home I sat at the end of her bed and sang with her and it was such touching moment.

I remember hearing this song in the summer of 1970 when I was 11. Even after all these decades, "Fire and Rain" is still my favorite JT song. It reminds me of sitting in our neighbor's screened in patio playing canasta with the transistor radio tuned to an AM station. It's been over FIFTY YEARS and yet I can see, smell and hear everything.
And 1970 was the year of my parents' divorce. Bittersweet....

He is such a treasure - has such a soothing familiar voice. I’m so glad you guys listened! Some other hits of his are: Carolina on my mind, sweet baby James, and shower the people. All are sweet gentle songs. I also love the more rockin Steamroller Blues. He also did Takin’ It To the Streets with the Doobie Brothers, which is a great song if you haven’t heard it. ✌️

JT signed to the Beatles' Apple Records, McCartney loved him. George took the line something in the way she moves from him, Taylor said sure it's yours. This song is about a girl he lost, I forget all the details someone will explain it in more detail I'm sure.

FINALLY! My singer, songwriter, psychologist, JT! What an amazing talent he is! I'm sure someone has told you the meaning of the song. I can't wait to hear your reaction! You are so close on what happened to make him write this song. This song also is one of the songs that could not be played on the radio after 9/11 due to the "fire" and "rain" and other parts that was too close to the turmoil of the twin towers, Pentagon, etc. James Taylor is freaking amazing!

    Edit-Steamroller live is so
    much fun.
This was one of my favorite reaction of yours. Both of you talking about things this song reminded you of were beautiful.

James Taylor is a treasure,. I've seen him twice in concert and he sounds just like the studio versions. You need to listen to "Sweet Baby James", "in My Mind I'm Going to Carolina" and "Mexico". Also the Live version of "Mockingbird" with Carly Simon. It's pure joy.

JT played acoustic guitar on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" as well. He's been friend and colleague of many musicians, and ex-husband of Carly Simon. "Something In The Way She Moves" and "Carolina in My Mind" are two wonderful James Taylor songs for you.

You can put on this album on a Sunday, laze around the house, have some coffee, read a bit, and work your way into a great afternoon. James Taylor is fabulous. Keep going down this rabbit hole . He’s a great songwriter/singer/guitarist, and he’s even funny.
