-Our Intro Song "Feel the Love" From Alex's band
open.spotify.c...
RIP David Lindley, Jackson's sidekick for decades. Playing the slide and singing the high part on Stay
Yes he was good. Saw him in his own band opening for Joe Walsh and also playing in Jackson Brownes band.
Everyone needs to hear "El Rayo X" and "Win This Record", from Mr. Lindley.@@bradsense7431
Lindley's Mercury Blues was pretty tight, too.
I didn’t think he sung it on the record, only on live shows. I remember having the album. And I thought Maurice Williams, the guy who wrote it, was the singer. But it’s been a long time ago. So I could be wrong.
@@larryjohnston929 These 2 songs were live. Recorded at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Landover MD.
Sniff, you found a sweet component of my young adulthood. This was typically the closing song and everyone waited for it. This entire album is genius. Rosemary Butler is the female backing vocal and David Lindley has played fiddle, slide, etc. with Mr. Browne for decades. They were perfectly in simpatico musically. Sadly, Mr. Lindley has passed on. Jackson Browne has been my pretend boyfriend forever . . .
Definitely my pretend boyfriend too lol
prolly should have hung out in a certain restaurant in Santa Barbara in the mid 90's then - he was there almost every night..or every night I went anyway@@norwegiantj
😊
Mine too…
Jackson Browne has been my mom’s pretend boyfriend forever too. She has long told a story about being invited backstage but not going because she was pregnant at the time. I have no idea if it is true and she has dementia now, which has made her an even more unreliable reporter of facts. What I do know is that she dances while listening to Jackson Browne several times a day every day.
I grew up on a steady diet of what we in GenX call classic rock, but there is no other artist where I can sing four of their albums word for word, which just proves what a devoted fan she was.
Thanks for your comment. It really brought a smile and a tear. I love Jackson Browne for the joy, connection, and artistry he has given my mom and the rest of us.
PS - I won’t make my mom jealous by telling her he was also your pretend boyfriend. It can be our secret.
Guys, this whole album is a masterpiece, and should be listened to start to finish. For those of us who were around in 77, it was a case of the stars aligning, and the world stopping for a brief glimpse of perfection. Easily one of my favorite live albums of all time. Great song writing and musicianship.
It pulls at the old heart strings like few others.
Class of '77 here, we had the best music. Ever.
@@nancy9478 '77 here as well Nancy and so true about the music
So was the live concert
This recording is an incredible time capsule of the '70s. I wish I were back there so much.
You ain't the only one, Bro...
I saw Jackson Brown on this tour. This was their encore, which turned into a whole nother set. The album is a concept album about being on the road. This song makes me tear up every time even 45 years after hearing it for the first time late one night working in the kitchen at Arbys. It captures the band's experience so well.
Jackson Browne is still performing, 45 years after the release of this album
As long as he still enjoys it
Jackson Browne definitely has song-writing chops. Also wrote "Take it Easy", Eagles.
Sorry but Jackson Browne did not write "Take it Easy". He did buy it from a friend of mine who did write it, so Jackson owns it and he does write good stuff. When words or music are credited, if it says by someone they wrote it but if it just has the name without the 'by' it means they own the rights.
Jackson Browne has been one of my all time favorites since the 1970s. I am going to see him in concert for the 5th time in my life on October 8, 2023. The Pretender, These Days (with variations on lyrics) , Late for the Sky, Shape of a Heart, Here Come Those Tears Again. THIS is the One More Song. At the end he says, "I'd like to thank you all".
Ah…I’m seeing him October 6th! First time.
JB's Redneck Friend is the best
Nice! I saw him back in 1991 and 1992 in Sedona, Arizona.
October 8th... The day before his birthday
Shape of a Heart is a fantastic song. Especially when you think of the tragic end to his marriage.
I was in college when the album Hold Out was released. I went on a long road trip with only that cassette for tunes. Though not considered his best work, I still love each and every song. It is the soundtrack of my freshman year!
Browne truly works at his craft. In his autobiography, Neil Young writes of sharing a house in his early days in California with Browne, and hearing Browne working away on the piano for hours and hours on what became "Doctor My Eyes."
I bet those were the Laurel Canyon days.
It was Glen Frye from Eagles.
@@judypratt2868 I read the Neil Young book, and he wrote what I posted. Frye may have said something similar too. Only proves the point of Browne being known as working long and hard on his songwriting craft.
It was J D Souther and Glenn Frey who told that story about his work on Doctor My Eyes.
@@dennisdare212 Neil Young too. I read his autobiography.
When it comes to American song writers Jackson Browne has always been in the top notch. Before the Deluge, and The Pretender two greats. Many, many others: Here Comes those Tears Again, These Days and Fountain of Sorrow.
Maryland transplant living in Clearwater area. Attended this show at Merryweather Post Pavilion in Columbia Md. Unbelievable venue, had the pleasure of seeing Zepplin there, they were actually the opening act for the Who. We were very fortunate during those times. Saw Allman Bros, Duane’s last concert. Also had the pleasure of Little Feat waiting for Columbus live recordings, I could go on and on. 73 years old and I’m still all about ✌️❤
Its tradition that some performers play one more song to put the Stagehands into overtime as a sign of appreciation.
This whole album is live. Recorded in motel rooms and on the bus and anywhere they could stick a microphone if they felt like they wanted to do a song. It's a flawless album.
Also in sound checks and a couple of tracks in front of the audience (Running on Empty and these two).
Yes, it’s one of the albums they should do from start to finish.
Remember, "it takes a clear mind to make it."
yep@@glawnow1959
@@glawnow1959Strother Martin!
Every word was perfectly placed and told a story. I was THERE! I was watching the roadies tear down, I was on the road, I was missing my family, I was in the hotel. I was there watching a band that loves their fans and want to play. Immaculate.
Cassettes, 8-tracks, CB's, truckers, magazines, Richard Pryor on video. This is just sooo 70's. What an awesome song that captures these vibes. What a great time to be alive.
Amen Brother
I say that tour in 78 at the Santa Barbara County Bowl. So much fun. Great music
Song was an 'S', just for the lyrics alone. The level of artistry poured into a song like this, somewhere around the mid-90s, almost totally vanished from modern music.
My childhood *sniffles*
Yes it was!
I saw Warren Zevon live. He played his show and the audience really showed him appreciation. The show was obviously over but he sat down at his piano by himself and played "Hasten Down the Wind" for the audience. The artists really mean it when they say the time to play is too short.
Falsetto voice is the late, great David Lindley. He was also responsible for the steel guitar.
I love the image of Jackson Browne playing the piano on an empty stage in an empty arena while the trucks are being loaded up.
I remember seeing Jackson Browne live in the mid 80's and I'm pretty sure he closed out with these two songs. We were all waiting for them and he didn't disappoint. Glad you guys appreciated them so much. The whole Running on Empty album is excellent.
that's how i remember it too
Same.
Now they should check
Maurice Williams - Stay ( the original)
The Pretender is my favorite song by him.
Jackson Browne's “Late For The Sky” album is great!
One of the greatest records ever recorded.
My favorite!
@@Wordsmyth8 I’ll agree with you!
My favourite album of all time "late for the sky " must've heard it a thousand times and will never get bored with it. Got it for my 12th birthday. I've seen jackson browne in concert 24 times. Can't wait to make it at least 25. Hoping he'll come back to England very soon
Very few of us will ever know the agony or the ecstacy of a bands life on the road. This gives us a glimpse, and does it with grace. Thank you Mr. Browne.
David Linley on lap steel is the best thing!
Phoebe Snow wrote the song "The Poetry Man" as a tribute to Jackson Browne. I mistakenly listed Minnie Riperton as the artist. Thanks for the correction robmorrison1043. "Rock Me on the Water" is another great song you should give a listen. My late wife loved "Ready or Not" and as a lighthearted song about unexpected parenthood it’s worth a listen.
Poetry Man was written by
and done by Pheobe Snow.
Poetry Man was written and performed by Pheobe Snow.
@@robmorrison1043 Boy did I get my wires crossed! Thanks for the correction!
I did not know that. Thanks
A+ for me. He made me see how much more there was to each concert I saw. Then Stay… so damn good.
Forgot how good this was! When it finally morphs into “Stay” it sticks in your memory forever.
I just went to see Billy idol on the day after my 26th bday. August 28th. And he spent a lot of time thanking the crowd. Saying that he gets to live such a great and fun life. Doing his favorite thing, performing. And it wouldn't be possible without the fans that come to see him. He was so grateful. Amazing concert
Good to hear, Mr. Broad has gratitude.
One of the all time great songs...One of my favorite songs...Can never hear this song enough.
The song Running on Empty was recorded live at a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, not on the bus.
The Late Great David Lindley on this too. He passed in March. RIP, Sir.
JB's "Late For The Sky", "The Pretender", and "Only Child" reverberated so strongly with me and "Sky Blue and Black" is the ultimate heartbreak song.
Finally someone doing these two back-to-back!
It's the only way!
Like Heartbreaker and Living,Loving,Maid
I'm impressed they're doing these two songs at all. Reactors need to give the man his due!
Separating them is illegal.
as it should be done A&A do not miss. Among the best reactors out here, more like two friends
This was the closer, the one more song. Always chose the concert package every summer at Merriweather Post Pavilion in MD to include Jackson Browne. He never failed to deliver each and every time. Thanks for playing this. It really takes me back.
love Merriweather post pavillion! i saw the beach boys there in 86.
My understanding is that THIS recording was done in Merriweather Post. (Obviously, I might be wrong, but that is what I heard.) I lived in Columbia from 1997 to 2005, and went to concerts there several times.
@@jimtuell4076 that’s my understanding, too. Unfortunately, I wasn’t at that particular concert but I can dream that is was I guess. 😀
This WAS done at Merriweather Post Pavilion. I was there with 2 gfs. They told us they were recording. The late 70's...
I'm not a huge Jackson Browne fan, but these 2 songs are probably an S for me. What a great writer, I feel like I'm there with the band and roadies.
Absolute great album. So cool how it was recorded: backstage, on a bus, and on stage.
Jackson still puts on a great show. Arguably, better now than in his early years. Play any song from Late For The Sky...a songwriters gem.
I'm envious, listening to this song for the first time, so much to take in. I've heard it 100s of times but the feelings just translate so well.
I love how they just morph into country and western, R&R, and disco. Only a great band can do that.
The Section. 'nuff said. ;-)
He's TIMELESS!
"the pretender" is another great Jackson Browne song, along with "these days" and "sing my songs to me/for everyman"!!! also the live video of this is so much fun!
We are a social species, and we are at our best when we come together. Very few situations that this is more evident than at a musical performance, where the attention of a crowd is focused on musicians, who are in turn pulling together to produce a meaningful sound and message. Magic!
Yes indeed....my high school years. Hearing this amazing gem more than 40 years later, it kinda brings a tear to my eye....and, yeah, I remembered every single lyric. The treasured memories of my younger days in the 1970s are PRICELESS and I wouldn't trade them for ANYTHING. 😃
First time to see you and I love the way you actually get into the music and REACT in real time as we see you listen.
I've never been able to listen to this without singing along! (I had the album when I was in high school when it was released.)
Thank you guys. I can’t remember how many years ago I’d requested this one. I’m sure along with many many others. My favourite song him. Some others off this album are amazing too. But this. Pure beauty!!
I love how every member of the band gets their little time to shine in this song. (Except maybe the drummer).
"Stay" was an old hit record even back then, but JB's creative genius was to include and combine it into this ultimate ROAD song. I was in a band playing the heavy LA circuit when this album came out. (i.e. 'Running On Empty') We were HARD rock musicians but we'd sit around and listen to this whole album over and over. Damnit. Brings tears to this bass player's eyes. You guys got it. Many thanks.
I was fortunate enough to see Jackson Browne in concert, Philly 1978, and yes this was the finale. What was also cool was the falsetto part in "Stay" was sung by David Lindley, Jackson's slide guitar player, which was pretty unexpected.
Jackson live is still a sight and sound to behold! Just saw him this past May.
Well done, boys. Always loved Jack.
If you’ve ever been in a band and been on the road, songs like this about road life cut so deep. This and Seger’s “Turn The Page” bring back so many memories I’ll always cherish. The endless roads in the middle of nowhere, the hotels that run together, the lonely afternoons, the girl who would steal my heart for a week or 2 until the next girl came along, and above all else…pinching yourself with how lucky you were to be a drummer in a major rock band on the road…and get paid for it. All we did was either sleep all night on the bus to the next city or wake up at noon in a hotel, eat, shower, check out the town or the sights, afternoon band meeting to practice parts or go over the set list, eat, get ready for the gig, band dinner, chill, gig time: play for 2+ hours, 2am: party, sleep, then off to the next city. Repeat. That’s your career.
Are you kidding me???Those we’re the best days of my life. Bet you can guess the band. Guarantee you knew us. 😉
Andy summed it up, gratitude. I have gratitude when I see these 2 young men visibly moved by music I listened to in college and I'm 66.. I have gratitude in having a forum where I can find out who that fantastic backup singer is. I have gratitude That A & A put so much thought in their commentary. I am especially grateful for Mr. Jackson Browne whose songwriting skills touch my heart so often. Running on Empty is a classic concept album. I cannot listen to his previous album, The Pretender, without running the gamut of emotions.
Brown and Springsteen are contemporaries. Bruce inducted Brown into the R&R Hall of Fame. In his speech he said “Jackson Brown wrote the songs we all wish we wrote.”
Truly a modern day classic! It takes in all the elements of the road with the appreciation of all the people who put it together!
I saw this live.....it was spectacular....even the roadies sang ! This was the encore.....
And the one very high voice is a guy....
🐾 Yeah! It's time for an Andy & Alex reaction! 🐈 🐾
Great song enjoys guys. swing back to twosome Jie Walsh Confessor..... excellent unique guitar
The song is a tribute to the roadies and all involved in touring, thanking them for allowing them to play an encore... Saw it Live late '70's in NJ it's on the live album
In my youth, I saw Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs perform "Stay". So impressed with Jackson Browne reviving it.
What's three levels above S-tier? Because from the very first note, that's what this song is. Magnificent.
Such a great story put to music. Outstanding live performance. Cheers....
There is a theatre to this live show. The band slowly rejoins Browne on stage and play in at different times. ✌️🎸
The two solos in this song -- on the keys (organ or synth?) and on guitar -- are some of the best parts here. Each time, I am taken on a lyrical journey through a section of the song, even though it's strictly instrumental. Phenomenal composition.
There's actually two guitar solos, the first guitar solo in the middle of the "Stay" section is Danny Kortchmar, the slide guitar is the late David Lindley, (who also sings the male falsetto, the female voice is Rosemary Butler, the harmonizing male voice is Doug Haywood), Craig Doerge plays the synth, as well as playing organ and electric piano, Browne himself is, of course, on the regular piano, Leland Sklar on bass, and Russ Kunkel on drums.
I saw Jackson Browne live this past July. Of course he brought the house down playing this as his encore.
The late great Glenn Frye was once Jackson Browne's upstairs neighbor. Frye said that Brown drove him crazy with his incessant playing.
Frye could hear every note that Browne sang and played as he was writing Doctor My Eyes and other songs for his debut album.
He said that Browne would play a few chords and sing a few melody notes, over and over for hours if necessary, until he was satisfied with each section. Browne would pause for several minutes, and Frye could hear a tea kettle whistling. Then, Browne would return to his piano and begin working on the next section of the song for another long period of time. He was taking his sweet time and didn't seem to care how long it took to finish writing a song.
Although, it drove him crazy. Frye also remarked that it helped him as a songwriter to hear Browne's very meticulous, detailed method of creating songs and building them piece by piece from the ground up.
Frye had already written some of his own songs. This period was before the Eagles debut album came out. But, for Frye, this was kind of a light bulb moment, hearing how a good songwriter crafted his songs with a dedicated plan and a purpose.
Jackson wrote Doctor my eyes when he was 16. Glenn was nowhere close.
@mikedineen7857 My version of the story must have been misquoted. I just read other versions of the story, and Frey didn't actually name the song. Maybe he was referring to hearing Jackson's writing process on several several songs.
Next JB song I’d recommend is “The Pretender.” Masterpiece
Andy's facial expressions throughout the song says it all. great song. brings back so many memories for me.
Rose Mary Butler is the great backup singer on this song. She backed up Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Neil Young and Rosanne Cash on recordings.
I would love to hear a Bonnie Raitt or Rosanne Cash song on A&A.
I love this song. It's such a beautiful tribute to the fans and the roadies. I didn't appreciate Jackson Browne until I was in my 30's but I now count him as one of my favorite artists. He is a brilliant lyricist. "The Pretender" is one of my favorite songs and it really has more meaning to me as I get older. "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate" is another beautifully tragic song that worth a listen. It was written after Jackson's wife committed suicide. You can't go wrong with anything by Jackson Browne in my opinion.
When I lived in Rotterdam, my car had an 8 track tape deck, but the only tape I had was Jackson Browne's album "Late For The Sky". I played it repeatedly for two years, any time I was driving. To this day, I still love it.
Back in the day, everybody I knew owned this album. It has held up well over the decades.
The ultimate of concept albums. The whole thing was wrirren/recorded while on tour. From the bus to boxes being played in hotel rooms.
This was their final encore on the Running on Empty tour 1977 stage dark Jackson solo on the piano. then joined by David Lindley and the rest of the band came out and joined in. The album was written about life on the road.
He came at the tail end of the melancholy song period, with others like Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, The Eagles and such. Some beautiful songs, but man, was soooo happy when fun rock reappeared with punk and new wave.
Another good one is ‘bright baby blues’ with the late great Lowell George on slide. It’s badass
This one is in a class all it's own. Always has been and always will be.
I was lucky enough to catch this tour live. Definitely in the top ten of great concerts I've seen over the years, and there have been many. The band was a stellar grouping of players. The late great David Lindley, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel and many others...
Oh, and the female vocalist is Rosemary Butler assisted marvelously by her backing vocal mate Doug Haywood.
The "Stay" part of the song is a brilliant additional tribute, along with those to the stage hands and the audience, a cover of a much loved classic from 1960 by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.
JB and his band are legends from the AOR era, and this performance is one of many reasons why. He is part of our soul.
One of my all time favorite songs. So wonderful ❤❤❤
Someone who really appreciates those behind the scenes. Great song(s)…
aaaahhhh nice! friggin awesome seeing young people like yourselves reacting to our old skool music, thank you!!
Love Jackson Browne. This whole album is phenomenal. Dude can write his ass off!!!
Back when this came out I was a college freshman. My roommates had a band and they stored some of their equipment in my dorm room. I got the bright idea of hooking up their 500 watt amp/pre-amp and Peavy SP1 speakers to my turntable, and we played this album at full volume (along with Head East, Never Been Any Reason). We had party central from then on. Good times, great song.
I went to the 'Running on Empty' tour when they played in Fort Worth, TX. They did play one more song... 'The Pretender'.
Yes, saw this live. They did play one more song after "The Load Out/Stay". Rosemary Butler on female backup vocals. David Lindley on lap steel and vocals on the Zodiac's portion.
I was at that concert and my memory is that was his encore. Did ya hear me cheering??!! Mereweather Post Pavilion was an awesome outdoor venue. Jackson Browne was amazing!
My favorite songs on that entire album. Heard it when I purchased the album and was an instant favorite.
Geez I was 13 or 14 & loved this. That’s how I discovered Jackson Brown
Saw Jackson Browne in 1980…. Long story but I bought two front row center section seats at last minute. While opening band was playing. Rest of row was people he knew. Oklahoma City.
A very great show. They did this song in the middle of the show.
I used to camp out for tickets. Been to hundreds of concerts. This was my only front row seats.
The song's authenticity comes from the fact that his supporting musicians were all A-List studio musicians who were also constantly touring. They played with James Taylor, Carole King, Warren Zevon, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby and Nash... You guys know all those names by now. Jackson Brown wrote the lyrics centered around himself, but they all felt it and it shows. The band was known as "The Section": Russ Kunkel on drums, Leland Sklar on bass, Chris Doerge on keyboards, Danny Kortchmar and David Lindley on guitars. Waddy Wachtel also played with this group, but not on this song. Not sure if he played on other songs on the album. The album came out in 1977, which if you look, you'll see was chock-full of other great albums, and this was absolutely one of the best that year.
Back in the 80's...in our own "that 70s show circle " of our own...this album was a staple.
We were quintessential head bangers of the time but this would album would always end rhe night strong...especially this song
One of the greatest songwriters of all time .JB has so many great songs a lot of them are thought-provoking and maybe a little sad, BUT NOT ALL. I've been a fan of his and seen him at least 25 times since the late 70's. Try "For a Dancer" or" Late for the Sky" or one of my personal favorites "Barricades of Heaven" Enjoy watching you guys whenever I can.
Been to several JB concerts. I really like that he uses women from his opening act (e.g. Shawn Colvin) as the female lead in Stay.
Generally this was his encore song.
As a Piano Mover, I often had this in my head when picking up a instrument after a show.
One night in San Diego after a show I found the musician sitting at the piano in low light, plinking away and he put on a little mini performance for just my partner and I after I gently told him "I'm here to take your piano." In the tone of this song.
Good choice, A&A
"Gone Daddy Gone"- The Violent Femmes is a must that no other reaction channel has done yet.
So glad you finally did this one. It's one of a kind
Live is fantastic.
Jacksins entire music catalog us earth exploring. Such in depth poetic writing. Nothing is just an accident in his music it's toiled I er with every element. True story; He was playing at SPAC one time where I working in PR at the time his contract was typical to play only fir a set period of time. He decided to ask the audience if they minded if he played some more. He said he'd pay the additional fees to play on and so he did. He truly does love playing and stating just a little bit longer.
I was there. Merriweather Post...Columbia MD. It was magical really....1977. No one was sitting and everyone was singing.
David Lindley's "Mercury Blues" is a short, but sweet banger. Produced by Jackson Browne it showcases David's slide guitar.
David played steel guitar & sang the falsetto verse on "The Load Out/Stay". He was a brilliant musician who could play anything that had strings. He passed away early this year.
Anyone who has ever played in a garage band will love this!
Jackson Browne's voice is so expressive...it almost always moves me to tears.
You both are at a great stage in your lives and in your music reaction careers to hear this masterpiece! Your appreciation shines through in this reaction. Thank you.
My favorite Jackson Browne song. Thankfully you guys have reacted to it.
This is an S-TIER if there ever was one IMHO.
