@@stevecagle2317 Lizards are great. They usually promote local business. If they knock, please be courteous. Invite them in. They have a tough job.
It's very rude of them. He should never have opened the door and went outside, leaving his wife alone in bed behind an unlocked door. They could be 2 criminals, working together. It's best to crack a window and see what they want. Tell fans you're sleeping and they'll need to come back later.
As a trucker, I've slept at so many rest areas throughout the country (for years) alongside plenty of RVers. Occasionally you'll get a knock from a beggar or someone asking you to momentarily pull forward, so they can get in a spot next to you. I've always felt safe at majority of rest areas cuz we truckers and RVers keep an eye out for one another. Probably the cheapest option while out on the road, and as a plus, you have access to bathroom facilities. Rest areas are publicly funded meant for travelers. Don't be afraid to use them!!!

My husband and I stayed at a Walmart parking lot in Atlanta Georgia. I walked our dog. He went in to our camper to rest.
About a minute after I got back to our camper, there was a heavy knocking on our door.
A man was outside asking me if I was alone.
Terrifying.
My husband stood behind me and proved I was not.
You have to be tough to do this.
He wanted gas money. He didn't get it.

Perhaps another commenter mentioned this, but the guy in the car that made a wide Loop of the parking lot and then parked kind of close to you was probably a nomad sleeping in his/her car also! They were scoping out the parking lot to see the best place to park and perhaps they felt safer being not too far from your RV rather than off by themselves. Just a thought...safe travels!...

While watching another video on Vanlife someone suggested to take their seat belts and wrap it around the door handle a couple times and then fasten it that way someone from the outside couldn’t get in and giving you more time!! I’m new to your channel, have fun making a lifetime of memories and being safe 🙏🏻
That's a great idea. I'm definitely going to try. Also never use your driver's seat for storing stuff for the night, because you can't jump into it and leave in a hurry if you're in trouble. Same with the window cover in the windshield. Put your covers inside so you can leave in a hurry if needed. Just things I've learned living this lifestyle.
Clementine is adorable!!! Just a note: a coolant leak on a vehicle can be like cancer to a human. Take care of it the right way, right away, or she’s done for. Praying it all works out for yous
My husband and I were long-haul truckers for several years, so we feel your anxiety. A few suggestions: Install a hidden kill switch on your Suzuki, or at the minimum attach a club to the steering wheel. In case of a need for a quick getaway put your black-out shades only on the inside. Maybe add a security system with outside cameras so you can see all the doors and windows. Just an FYI, we were warned by our trucking company to not sleep in rest stops as there is a high incidence of muggings and break-ins. We never had a problem at truck stops except for some knocks from "ladies of the evening". I hope you have a great trip seeing all of the US!

Whenever I travel I usually sleep in rest stops. I'm a single woman in a car. Probably not the safest but there's usually security.
I second putting your black outs on the inside, that way if you have to leave quick you don't have to get out of your rig to see!
I'm a trucker and I'm at rest areas every other night just about. Never had any issues. Only rest areas where I know people knock is the first 2 entering NC NB on I95

I piece of advice..don't use the external window covers. In an emergency, you won't be able to see to drive off, plus someone can lift it and look inside. Maybe u can find a way to use it inside the windscreen instead.

I have purchased the cheap reflective sunscreens and trimmed them to fit the windshield and door windows exactly. Trim the cut edges with duct tape and they look great.

Loves is great. Been traveling SE US and they are safe, well lit, 24/7, showers, bathrooms, laundry, gas.

I'm sure someone has already mentioned it but you may not want to put the external window cover on when in parking lots in the public area. It would be hard to do a "quick" drive away if it was needed. Looks like your MO stop went pretty well. :)

I learned how to use that exact same windshield cover on the inside of the windshield! Using magnets in the strategic corners and edges and the corner tab.

Believe it or not, you guys were probably in one of the safest places possible. Loves has a really good reputation for safe and clean facilities. It's also a guaranteed good spot to stay the night, as opposed to some places. For example, while most Walmarts won't care if you stay the night, a lot of towns nationwide have been passing laws in the last few years prohibiting overnight parking. Don't let that discourage you though. On another note, are you guys aware of the ferry that goes across Lake Michigan from Wisconsin to Michigan? It's the S.S. Badger, and I think you might enjoy it.

This, I've never had any problem stopping or even sleeping over in my car at a Love's. They have great staff and security, and as noted, lots of comfortable amenities. I wouldn't listen to these two, tbh. They're likeable enough but not super sensible. Not fair to Love's to paint them as a dangerous place either. And they're not just a "gas station", they are full service truck stops. Sheesh.
Yes, taking the S.S. Badger Ferry is a great addition enjoyment (take a break, driving and enjoy Lake Michigan)! .My family use to take the retired "Clipper" across ,when I was growing up!
@Pat Luxor While that may be true, the laws are written to prevent overnight parking on private and public PROPERTY within the city limits. The idea behind these types of laws is to prevent RVers from setting up camp in a businesses parking lot for several days and leaving a mess when they leave.
Ya, I’m sure it was just because it was their first time. After a few parking lot stays, the shakes fade away and you start to become immune to the noises. The rest just comes with the territory

making one or two strategically placed openable vent holes in the floor helps keep interior much cooler: it sucks the cool air from the shade under the RV into the unit when the floor vents are open and the roof vents are on. Gotta check/measure carefully from underside to be sure not drilling into areas that would harm the integrity of the RV structurally or mechanically. Best if the floor vents can be positioned not-under the ceiling vents but in places the air will pass through where you sit or sleep on the way to being sucked out. In dry climates is lovely to park on damp soil (or throw some water under the rig) because that further cools the air being drawn up through the floor vents. 💞
Ps also make sure you aren't going to suck exhaust in lol

@@charisma-hornum-fries What works well is to use a double layer of metal screening on the underside of the hole. Works fine to glue it on with a glue like "Shoe Goo." Keeps critters & bugs out. In dusty areas or high allergy season, it also helps to tape a paper towel over the interior inlet opening... acts as an inexpensive & easy to change filter.

Hi! We've been traveling full time in our 1990 renovated class C for about 2 years. I've been watching since you started the RV renovation and it's awesome to see you guys finally on the road. Tip for you: we've stayed a bunch of times overnight in parking lots for "layovers" in between our destination sites on long travel days and we were feeling similarly, really anxious at Loves and Walmarts. We had people knock on the door too and we found it really nerve-racking. Cracker Barrels are by far the best experience. They are almost always RV friendly for overnight stays and well lit, and nobody will really bother you since their RV spots are tucked behind the restaurant and they close at night. Cracker Barrels are also usually within walking distance of travel stops/gas stations so you can still use public restrooms. Another thing: they let us run our gas generator so we could use our AC. We ditched the onboard generator too but we have a super quiet predator 3500 from harbor freight. You could get a rack to mount it off to the side on the rear bumper so it doesn't interfere with your tow car and it's another super handy option for power.
Oh great advice! We'd heard rumors of Cracker Barrels allowing overnight stays, but didn't known anyone who'd done it. Pretty nice that they let you run your generator, too! We haven't really looked into getting one, but a quick search of the predator 3500 and we might be tempted to try it out for our off-grid days! Thanks!

We have woods behind our Cracker Barrel, it's dark behind the restaurant and several homeless living in the woods. I'd be more afraid of that situation over a well lit parking lot.
Never mind the restaurant - how about asking the RV parked RIGHT NEXT TO YOU if THEY mind your running a noisy, stinky generator about a half dozen feet from their bed?

My son sleeps at Loves all the time. He's an OTR truck driver. OTR stands for over the road what used to be called long haul trucker.
We have stealth camped all over the US, most recently in a Class B van. Our precautions are to always leave the driver's seat free of clutter and prepare everything on the outside for travel. I agree to cover your front window from the inside (WeatherTech makes custom sizes). If your key fob has a horn alert on it, keep it near you at night. Looking forward to your Adventures!
I agree, I always keep my key fob next to me to hit the alarm if needed..2 years, I've not once needed it but you never know.
I recently traveled from California to North Carolina. The things I learned: Always be aware of surroundings, no matter where you stay. Also, plans can change. Loves and TA stops are the safest stops. Enjoy your journey

Hubby and I have spent many a night in truck stop parking lots while traveling in the big rig. Always felt safe, no probs. Been in 48 states. Happy trails, guys!
This is all teaching me perspective...normally, I'm the total opposite. I feel safest car camping in the big gas station (Love's, highway rest stops, etc) parking lots and more nervous in Hipcamps/campsites. All in what you're used to 🙂. Enjoy your trip and glad the sketchy dude didn't bother you!

I can't believe the rudeness of some people! Outside of an emergency, I would NEVER bug a total stranger by knocking on their door, much less at SEVEN in the morning! WTF. Dude needs to get a clue.
I am a (soon semi-retired) mechanic and learn what good transmission fluid looks like and smells like. If it ain't pink and sweet (mostly) then have the filter and fluid changed. Do not have it "back flushed" or "flushed" at all. Just do drain and fill, with new filter. The flushing companies have forms you have to sign with tiny print that if it causes problems they are released of liability. ... drain and fill. Find local auto shops at a college or other school and ask if they can use your rig for their class and do repairs and you can hang and learn too.. I am not saying to take classes but basic maintenance classes would help... education/knowledge would help in how you deal with shops too.

Haha! Newbies! We use truck stops and rest areas on every trip. We don’t pay for any sites until destination state. We were nervous at first years ago but not once has anyone asked us to move. When you make Oregon Coast hit us up and we can go camp in woods off grid. Silence of nature is so refreshing!
Whenever anyone messes with a transmission ,always check to see if it was Overfilled ,because as it gets hot it will come out of the fill tube and smoke and mess all over ! It happened to me once and the extra fluid had to be sucked out from the trans dipstick filler ,down to the correct level !

I just happened to see your channel, and others similar channels recently, and I think that you, and others sharing their actual reality, and some have expressed some of the up, and down sides to van, RV, or vehicle living.
I believe that it is very helpful, and beneficial to others who may be thinking about this type of living without actually thinking through, about the some of the realistic problems that could occur with vehicle or van living etc.
People need to know what up sides there are, as well as some of the down sides of vehicle living.
I believe this channel, and other channels have been informative to others, including myself.

*Keep a Extra working cellphone with you or in your vehicle.
You can purchase inexpensive phone with a very low monthly price between 25, 35, 45, dollars a month with unlimited data and text, and some have Nationwide coverage
Do your research for the best fit for you
Carry Several Extra portable phone chargers, and cables.
Consider theses items:
*Mini portable power charging station.
I have also seen outdoor portable solar powered power stations, that can be recharged from sunlight this may be very useful to have, to power your devices.
*Cellular signal booster for outdoor use, and camping situations to boost or amplify your cell reception,
Research to see what you prefer.
*Very Inportant:
Invest in a SOS distress electronic signal device, this a kind of device can send out a distress signal with your exact location.
There are various types of these devices, and including devices that can be used when boating or camping situations.
*Some have emergency Strobe lights SOS signaling with location alerts, and location updates that can be sent to your family, and emergency first responders.
Some can be synchronized with your smart watch or phone.
You can check online, and on Amazon, research what SOS devices will be a good fit for you.
*Mini portable vehicle battery charger-( portable vehicle battery jumper cables )
*Vehicle Jumper cables
*Keep a Fire extinguisher handy
Mounted Dashboard camera front and rear possibly.
Exterior vehicle cameras
Interior vehicle cameras
*Flashlights or pluggin spotlights
*Portable spotlights, and lanterns
Keep a few whistles around with you, and in your vehicle possibly in your vehicle’s center console
*A set of long range 2 way radios, walkie talkies, with others during trips, some have 100 mile radius keep for emergencies.
Use your own discretion regarding the use of any weapons.
Don’t forget to bring
Bear Spray
Pepper spray
Where is allowed
Keep in contact with your family, friends etc.
Although, I just noticed your RUclips channel, and other similar channels.
You seem Very Aware of your surroundings and Alert, and you may be aware of many of these suggestions, however, I Don’t know, so I just posted this anyway to help anyone who may benefit from these suggestions.
Keep up with the latest Weather Updates, beware and prepare for unexpected Weather events and conditions.
Keep your vehicle gas filled
Don’t chance your Safety by running your vehicle fuel or gas too close to Empty.
Fill it up anyway, it will save you alot of time, and headache later on.
Keep Extra financing, and savings for any unexpected issues, vehicle repairs, and overnight stays, in a emergency or if you need to rest indoors.

I love loves they're always so accommodating when you're doing cross-country trips.
You guys are my heroes! You were so gracious with that fan who knocked on your door. Honestly, you handled that so well. I’m a huge fan, but I think I would draw the line at bothering in your home. 😂
As much as we feel like we know them because we've been watching them since 2016, they have no idea who we are. I would love nothing more than to buy them both a beer and have a drink in a public place but I certainly would never knock on their RV/Car. Plus this is their job, can you imagine someone walking up to you at your job and staring or asking you a bunch of questions. E&A get yourself an alarm system and then have them be one of your sponsors.
I've been a nomadic for 3 yrs. I've never had a problem when sleeping, especially at Love's.
Of course I do have a two dogs, with "Beware of Dog" signs, that helps.
If you are ever by Cracker Barrel restaurants you can usually stay in the parking lots. We always call ahead or go in to ask. We have always felt safe . Safe travels!!
Great video. You have me going with the intro "knock on the door". Maybe make a sign for your door that says "No knocking till 10 AM", or something like that. Just stumbled across your channel, and I am astonished. I live in California and am 66 years old. My mother was born in Qulin in 1929, but her family lived in Poplar Bluff. I have not heard of anyone from Poplar Bluff ever in CA. I visited my great great Uncle Fred and Aunt Earlie on their farm in PB. It was next to a cemetery. Last time there must have been the late 1960’s. What a trip down memory lane! I will look forward to following you!
You are finding more at Loves because, though the sell gasoline, they are NOT a gas station. They ARE a Truck Stop and are designed to accommodate the needs of we Truck Drivers. 🤗

Have never had a problem staying in a Loves or a parking lot of any kind.

100%. Been doing it for years and never been bothered. Seen a lot of travelers, met some cool truckers, a lot of dogs, a few hookers, tumbleweeds, buffalo, deer but never been knocked on.

Yup, exactly. Love's are not shady places at all, they're very well run. I've stopped at many over the years.
Unfortunately I think it was just the perfect storm of nervousness on our end for our first stay and then being woken up by the knock...it just rattled us a bit, but we'll definitely try other overnight stays and hopefully won't have any future issues 👍

You guys need some REFLECTIX they sell it at home depot it's cheap and it comes in rolls to cut out the shape of your windows and will help lower the temperature in your interior guys
I remeber the days when people used to socialize with one another. When walking up to a mans camper was a warm welcoming feeling , full of hello's and meeting new people, having fun and making memorys. . That was the experience of campers during the time that camper was built. Sad to see its been lost to the wind and forgotten about. Mabye oneday you will learn to brave the waters and get over these fears and get out there and experience
Eh, I think you guys mostly just psyched yourselves out. But Harvest Hosts was where we had some of the best overnights. Spending on the spots, there's usually food and conversation. We stayed at a vineyard once that was next door to a brewery, which also had a great restaurant. One of the best spots we found.
You should also start looking for Cracker Barrel restaurants. Most have a spot for RVs to park overnight. Get a great meal and probably some trinkets, and retire to a safe spot.
Have fun! This stuff can be a real "endless adventure," meeting all kinds of interesting people and seeing things that most people never see! We've loved it.
I think it would be a good idea not to have the windshield covered and to have the steps up. Just in case you needed to drive off without having to exit the vehicle first.

I just drove from Utah to New York and back. I stayed in gas stations like that a lot. I loved it.

Hello Eric and Allison what's going on Adventure's Ok here is somethings I've learned as a boon docker #1 Park where NO one is and #2 Park with your Front end facing out #3 Expect the unexpected that's the point of a steering wheel to expect the unexpected #4 Don't Panic # 5 is to Get clearance from the store for your over night stay and place a note from the night attendant with their signature and that night date #6 is to keep some noise going in the Rv so you don't panic over every single sound #6 is to BE GONE BEFORE THE START OF THE BUSINESS DAY use these tips and you will have a great stay #7 Is Most IMPORTANT IS TO NOT LEAVE ANY TRASH OUT SIDE so that you can have a return visit and a safe stay.# 8 is to purchase something as a way of saying thank you for the night rest
#9 Purchase Sour Patch Kid's candy 🍬 to show them that first they are sour and then they are sweet! 😋 🧁 🍪
One suggestion to keep engine heat and outdoor smells from getting drawn into the RV by your roof vents is to close off your dash vents when you stop.
I just recently found your channel and I gotta say I love it!!! Also loves us a must stop for me on all my road trips. The nicest and cleanest rest areas you can find in most cases. That and any Casey's truck stops.

If Ruby has a cigarette lighter plug thingy (idk what its called lol) you can get a portable AC to strap into her tiny back seat. If not, you can get a jump box and a USB powered portable AC. Just saying, there's options! Stay cool yall
So, we just did an rv trip in an 88 Ralley. It leaks like an S.O.B., but it made it all the way from Central California to West Virginia. We have continued making repairs along the way, as well as more upon arriving, but it's serving its purpose. We moved what we really wanted, 3 adults, a German Sheppard and 4 cats. After we got here, we had a nasty thunder storm, and our youngest cat got out in a state park that's thousands of acres wide. Amazingly enough, she came home. Traveling with animals is so hard. Like you, we used outside air also, no a/c, and Missouri was miserable. I feel for ya.

I have the same concern with the shade on the outside of the RV. In our van we got thin bubble insulation from Menards $20 for a huge roll and cut a tad bigger than the windows and they hold up really nice from inside.
We stay in flying j parking lots alot. One thing you might want to do is take pins out of your tow on the vehicle and put pad locks on just when you are parked for the night take them off when you hit the road the reason why is the vehicle is able to be moved if someone wants to mess around but you don't want to drive with them on Incase of a fire or something so you can separate them to save it
Sweating is good for you. Drink plenty water.

Hey hey now. I'm a trucker and loves is the best, cleanest truck stop to ever take a shower in. Just remember to take some shower shoes. They'll even give you two towels if you ask them.

We've hit a few Love's Style lots in the past. Agreed, it's a little weird. As for the antifreeze - you can run it straight. Diluting it with water actually increases it's boiling point and lowers the freezing point. But in an emergency, run it straight - or just mix it with tap (or even bottled) water. Yes, distilled is best. But if you're only adding a quart or so, I'd grab a bottle of water in a pinch.
I have worked on cars and trucks over 50 years and never heard of putting distilled water in a radiator...

You can spend the night at any Cracker Barrel, Bass Pro Shop or Cabela's. (Cracker Barrel they just like you to spend a little money there, but it's not required.)
When staying a truck stops we usually park out back with the big rigs. Lots less weirdos coming in and out through that lot at night. You can get noisy trucks idling all night to keep their reefers cool, but it is what it is. We don't do it often and never if the place is anywhere close to full because those guys are there because they need to be to make a living. Maybe try casinos if the opportunity arises.
I was wondering if those RV spots were only meant for people shopping and going. I would have thought you were supposed to park out back too.
We stay at Love's Truck stops all the time. Other than the noise, we have never had a problem. They are great places to stay. Also, some of the newer Loves have RV hookups for power and water for $32 a day.
The arrangement of your interior appears nice, cozy and romantic with the white drapery. The deal breaker is no AC. AC/Heat being operational is a must before putting that vehicle in drive. The ambiance is destroyed when you’re in an oven.

Driving from Alabama to Colorado to see my daughter , me and my 15 year old son slept in a LOVES parking lot in my Ford F150 . We would sleep for 3-4 hours and hit the road again. Yall are safe in their lot

That steak house food looked incredible!! We can totally relate with the whole "Cooking in the RV" situation. Washing dishes is the worst when you're trying to save water in your RV and when it's hot😂 as for wifi........that's a constant struggle with us living in an RV too 😂 We don't sleep in our loft as well. We slept at a casino parking lot for two weeks for free and it was a really good experience but again, we don't have fans so there's no interruptions 😂 so it could be harder for you guys. We really hope you're RV gets fixed soon! So sorry you guys have to go through that 😩
I purchased a RV countertop dishwasher, just pour a gallon of water in the top and turn it on, cleanest dishes I’ve ever had out of a dishwasher 😊

Lol, boondocking can be a lil "sketchy" at times. McDonald's smell is definitely a perk though lol! Clementine is lucky to have such amazing owners, she'll be back at it in no time!
I rode on my husband 18 wheeler for 2 years. I slept in the top bunk. Best sleep I ever got. Even back there where all the big truck parking is you still get people begging and selling stuff. You have to worry about someone hitting your truck or trailer. But the journey was fun and we were together non stop. I miss it.
My husband is a trucker and I rode with him for years and we stayed in truck stops. I never felt unsafe, only lot lizard we came across was in west Memphis. Most truckers are friendly and helpful. I could run inside at night to use the facilities and felt fine. Sometimes I would do laundry overnight when it was quiet. Maybe get a do not disturb for your window on the door when you’re sleeping.
Tip wise, a little note politely asking no knocks before x time, or till you see us about. But that front window cover, big no-no. During the day time, that's ok, but at night as a just in case you want an internal one so you can rip it off if you need to escape quickly. Also you need to look at properly securing Ruby to Clementine so that you can just leave her worry free. Cameras pointing out and backwards would be helpful too.

Always love your videos. I am a bit concerned about the window covering in your front window. Could you get that off without opening your doors? Thinking about youu you having to make a quick get away.
We agree. We have a front window cover in our class c that is inside…that way if anything is happening outside, we can just take the curtain down and go!

Walmart parking lots are almost always quiet and safe. Also Cracker Barrel. I have traveled most of the country with an rv and set my gps toward Walmart.
Walmarts are not as RV-friendly as they used to be, according to many RVers.
@@marielange9077 It’s usually the city/municipality that frowns upon it…Walmart itself is pretty welcoming to people staying overnight, and it’s a win/win. You get to stay and they get some shopping from you while you are there.
Home Depot and Lowe's are also good spots. I'm an over the road trucker and they usually allow you to park there as long as you're out of the way.
Yep, Gas Station stays, along with regular Rest Stops and don't forget the Walmart parking lot. Not to mention the odd Neighborhood. Been there/Done that! I love what you are doing, and brought back so many memories, I had no choice but to Subscribe and hit the "Like" button! Thank you for sharing!
I remember my first time driving through Missouri where I saw the round alien pods all over the fields. It freaked me out. The only hay I'd ever seen in my life was in square bales. Now I live in Missouri. We have hay fields that we leave standing for free range livestock. Hay really doesn't need to be cut and baled unless you are selling it. Bison understand this very well..
Awesome setup! We've been on the road for four years now full time and whenever possible we try to do overnights that don't take a space from truckers + are a bit on the quieter side. Harvest Host can be helpful in this regard, we especially like the Breweries and Wineries for something off the beaten path with a nice adult beverage to end the day with.
We've done a couple Harvest Host stays so far and are planning on plenty more! It's such a great concept. And we definitely appreciate Love's having the dedicated RV spots 👍
You can feed the seatbelts through your interior door handle and plug it into the buckle to help stop people from getting into the front.......it will at least give you time to wake up and hear if someone is.

As a truck driver who spent hundreds of nights a different truck stops, it was kinda funny to see y’all stress about sleeping there so much.
Most truck stops have a movie theater and things to do inside, don’t be shy about going in and watching tv or finding a place to sit and relax. WHATEVER you do, please don’t park on the truck side over night. That’s one less spot for a truck that will need that spot
