Allison, thank you for your sharing on how to sew a bowl cozy... I am 70 yrs young and took Home Ec all thru high school and loved learning to sew, Mrs.Eubanks in Alexandria VA was my teacher for 3 yrs... I have respect/admiration for your skills to share and teach,, I chose to be a nurse as I knew I did not have those skills. I have watched so many cozy tutorials and you are correct to use a batting a smidge smaller than the fabric. Thank you for your common sense well detailed directions. I have made 9 bowl cozies and 5 plate cozies the same way. I did one using equal sizes and found the edge so bulky. I also use both the diagonal stitching and the horizontal and vertical stitching which I prefer even though you may find it too much stitching. Thank you for your great tutorial.
Such helpful information! I was having trouble with my batting making my bowl tops almost too thick to top stich through and my corners were impossible to get pointed. Cutting that batting just a bit smaller works great. Thanks for sharing!
I’ve made gobs of these but for some reason I can’t resist watching tutorials for them! I loved yours. Since I am a newbie, My biggest issue is sewing straight, I always feel I should be able to sew fast. Watching you made me want to slow it down to get more precise! It's incredible!!!!!!! I got mine at Joann Fabrics. I would ask about the piece there. Happy sewing!!!

Thank you for an in depth tutorial. After watching other tutorials and made following their instructions. I found this and mine come out so much better. I still struggle a bit with the bulk when top stitching. Thanks again
I absolutely loved this in-depth tutorial and the fact that you were a home-ec teacher. You were so informative, simple, and down to earth! I'm very new at sewing at age 60 and just loved this video. Thank you so much for helping me, and your info really helped me understand and not get discouraged. I made one with pre-cut stabilizer in cotton, and it come out so small, I was embarrassed, and discouraged at how long it took, how hard it was to turn inside out and I had the darts wrong, anyway, plus my sewing to stitch was awful. So I am truly thankful I came across this video, I have subscribed for more of your helpful tutorials! Thank you ever so much!
Really enjoyed your video, haven't sewed in a few years, it really helped me on the problems I had on the first one I made. Thanks for all your helpful hints you gave us.
Thank you for the in depth tutorial I’ve watched many tutorials, by far your the best, so patient and explain why your doing it. I think I can finally do one I keep messing up where the darts are made. Going to give it a go. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this tutorial! I learned so much. I am 70 years old and am teaching myself how to sew. I believe I came across one of your teaching sessions to your students-making an apron. That was my first successful project. And now the cozy. I absolutely love learning with you. Thank you for all your time teaching younger students and now us older students. Stay well🧵🪡📍
Great video, thank you! 😊 Thanks for the Tip about the batting! I've never heard that mentioned before. 😊 I also liked the Tip to check the inside of the fabric before sewing the dart! 😊 I also like that you cut the batting a tad smaller than the outer fabric! I've often seen videos when people haven't cut it smaller and then have to go around trimming off the edges. 😊 A chopstick is a brilliant tool for your sewing room! If it's wooden, you can mark it with 1/4", 1/2", 5/8" & 1" along and it also makes a very quick & handy measuring tool because it's always at hand in the jar with your pens, etc. I also use a small hair flat iron for small ironing tasks. I bought mine as a special extra when I bought something else & it's been the best Aussie $5 I've ever spent! (USD $3) 😊 It's quick to heat up and ironing ribbons, bias tape, facings & hems, etc are so much quicker to press because it heats ip fast & I don't need an ironing mat or board. It also doesn't have the steam that can some distort your fabric just a tad. 😊 To make templates for specific bowls & plates, I'm going to try just making paper templates the same as I do for baking tins, but I'll leave enough extra for seam allowances & 'slip' so that they aren't too tigh fitting in your bowls or plates and you haveenough extra to hold ontowhen carrying or taking out of the microwave. I wonder if small fabric handles might also come in handy for lifting and carrying them in & out of the microwave and onto the table? I wish I'd had you for my sewing at school ... maybe I'd have learned to enjoy sewing sooner than aged 60! 😊 Cosies for mugs of soup would also be great as gifts for winter .... as soup mugs are usually bigger than coffee mugs, but they would need a flat base. How many do you make for a set, what sizes please? I'd like to make some as gifts for Christmas and I wouldn't want to appear stingy.
If you have some thing like a dollar store where you live, sometimes you can find the clear cutting mats and they make excellent templates much better than paper Also, just on a sidenote, when you have a lot of information to share, it makes it easier for us to read it if you put in paragraph breaks just like I did here in my comment section
Hello Allison 👋 👋 can I use old tea towels, I got a lot of them, in my Café. They'll Italian cotton made. I got boxes and boxes of them, unused! My grandparents used to have a pizza 🍕 hut now is a restaurant and a Café. Warm Donuts in the microwave 🍩 🍩 cup holder,🥤 I love your ideas 💡 amazing 💡 😍 thank you. EXCELLENT WORK.
And you can use them to hand out Halloween candy or even have oranges. Any kind of fruit that doesn’t have to go in the refrigerator. There’s a lot of things that you can use these for. And don’t forget about ice cream it’s cold to hold the bowl without these.
I've made the same pattern and added a few stitches and backstitches at the point of each dart, simply to hold the layers together and prevent shifting. I also rounded the corners so I wouldn't have difficulty pushing them out. Great video, Allison. Thank you.
Thank you Allison for your your great tutorial. i want to make some Christmas gifts for my children and your directions and suggestions have been a great help! You are very kind to share your knowledge and experience!
I just made one from a different youtube site and had way too much batting. Had to use a walking foot. Did not turn out as I had hoped, so I saved your tutorial and will give it another shot. Thanks for posting this tutorial.
The lady said it was a tracel iron. However if you only want to iron small things such as bias, facings, hems, ribbons, etc I use a small hair flat iron that I bought as a special deal with something else, best AU$5 I ever spent! No need for an ironing board or mat & no steam to distort fabrics. 😊
HHaHa! I was just about to comment what an excellent teacher for beginners you are when you said you WERE a teacher! Thx! Also, I was very interested to learn the the shape of the darts determine how shallow or deep the cozy is! I prefer the more flat style. I also like the curved corner style I’ve seen. Do you have a preference?
???? How many do you put in a set and how much do you sell a set for? I love these but I'm lost on how to price; thank you in advance--I love this tutorial!!!
It's clear that you loved teaching; you do it so well! Thank you for a clear, concise tutorial. I loved your hints for success along the way to making a really nice bowl cozy. I have a question for you (and others who may be able to answer). I love the idea of using this in the microwave as so many times, I use a pot holder to remove bowls from it. How practical is that, though? It has to get dirty from splatters. I heard you say you didn't use them this way. Thank you!
I use wax paper over our food when heating up. Tuck it around your bowl in the cozy. Helps keep it clean for longer and your microwave, too. I can't stand a splattered microwave oven. Even my husband uses the wax paper. Hope this helps. We buy precut wax paper at Sam's. It lasts so long. Cozies wash up beautifully, too.
Thank you! This tutorial is so helpful … I especially appreciate the tip about cutting the batting a bit smaller and than the fabric. It will make turning so much easier and the corners will look sharper. I like the tip about using less expensive fabric … these bowls will be used again and again and washed again and again. There’s no need to buy expensive fabric for this project! Question … is there any reason for not cutting multiple stacks of 10” squares? And, how do you feel about spray basting? Thanks again!
You can cut more than one 10" square at a time if you are comfortable with doing that--for a tutorial I wanted to just show doing one at a time--myself I cut 10" strips and then cut again--usually just the 2 because I don't want the fabric to shift Spray basting: I use it for quilts but think it might be too messy for such small pieces Thanks for watching!
The one that you made with the Lemon Material what were the Dart measurement. It looks like it is made tighter. I love the way you explain everything. This will help me. Now i can get started making Bowl cozies. Thank you so much, you are a wonderful Teacher.
Hmmm...not sure...possible the fabric was a little smaller? I couldn't tell you at this point because those are long gone but happy to hear you found the video useful
i think she said in video that the dart was 2-1/2 inch long for the lemon cozy. I have made cozies using 2-1/2" and 3" long darts which result in a taller cozy with smaller base which is perfect for my ramen bowls with 4" base.
Excellent Tutorial!! Thanks sooo much!! Only question I have is what pressure do you have your pressure foot with all of that bulk one is sewing at the end? Didn’t notice you adjusting for it. I have an old Sears KENMORE that is still Wonderful, and why I’m asking. THANKS!! Will look for your other videos!!
Since my machine is basically a home/industrial one it takes the bulk very easily and I haven't had to adjust my presser foot--your Kenmore is probably an all metal machine? I would play with the presser foot to see how much you need
Hi, my first sewing machine which was a Seers that I bought in 1970 or 71 was actually made to SEW over the pins. You did not have to remove them. And you’re right, it is hard not to do it.
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen of making bowl cozies. You are a wealth of knowledge! What size sewing needle do you recommend? I made a large makeup bag with fusible fleece using a size 14 needle and there were many skipped stitches.
Edit...I stopped pressing the darts open...I just trim really close and once I turn the bowl right-side out...When I press the edges...the dart flattens out
I really liked your video and successfully made a bowl cozy following it. However when I washed it, it shrunk and looked terrible. It is still usable but I won't be making any for gifts until I figure out what went wrong. Should I have prewashed my fabric?
I don't prewash...but recommend when washing to take out of washer and stretch to shape and air dry... The batting and fabric are cotton so they do shrink...and I find they don't need washing very often
I don't wash it because I don't wash the batting...sounds quite tedious to do that so it all shrinks at the same time...they never loom as neat as when 1st sewn 😃 but still useful
I don't...but you can...problem is that the batting thread and fabric need to be 100% cotton so 1st time you wash the bowl...it will shrink up a bit...just pull to shape and air dry
Can you give me standard sized darts for a 10 inch cozy, 8 inch cozy and 12 inch cozy? I know you can make different darts but I’m looking for more of a size size of darts.
I have made many bowl cozies and watched many tutorials and this one is great! I have one question. When I match up the dart seams to sew the pieces together I have always tried to make sure the top and bottom seam allowances were laying in opposite directions in order to reduce the bulk. As I watched you pin them together it did not look as if you bothered with that. Do you worry about that or just pin and stitch?
I don't really bother with it--if they lay in different directions I go with it--mostly just pin it and stitch--it seems to even out and not be too bulky--good luck!
Press the dart seams open and match them that way. Works great! Also, you can curve the corners. And you can add another couple rows of quilting across the centers of the square.
The package of the batting reads that it shrinks, and you should put it in hot water for 20 minutes and dry prior to using. I did this and the batting bunched up in places. Do you have issues with shrinkage after washing?
I soak my batting in the tub with pure hot water for 20 minutes. I don't wring it out. Instead I take the top end of batting squeezing the water out as I go down toward the end. I wear rubber cleaning gloves while squeezing. Water will still be hot. Grab a pan, bowl or whatever and put the batting in to get it to the dryer. I dry on low until dry. I can't see using the batting straight from the package knowing all cotton will shrink some. I also prewash my material before sewing.
@@amweg21 Agree. I don't wash anything before hand. If there is any shrinkage the batting and fabric kind of shrink the same. I put mine in the dryer and when I take them out of the dryer I stretch and smooth and shape and they look just fine.
I love your fabric! Turquoise is my favorite color. Is your iron rechargeable? Did you put the line going down the right side of your presser foot or did it come that way?
Finally, someone that admits it takes more than 5 minutes to make something! Thank you for this incredibly thorough & honest video.
Thanks for the comment
Thanks for the comment
No kidding. Those people who say that drives me crazy they don’t take into account the either washing of the fabric, the ironing the cutting goodness.

i think she said in video that the dart was 2-1/2 inch long for the lemon cozy. I have made cozies using 2-1/2" and 3" long darts which result in a taller cozy with smaller base which is perfect for my ramen bowls with 4" base.
I will remember this tutorial
I rounded the corners on mine so you don’t have to worry about poking out the corners. I think they look nicer too.
I use the "ears" to take out of the microwave so the points come in handy
Thank you !!!!!
Another question. What is the brand of your sewing machine? And thank you very much for showing us how to make the bowl holders.
Sewing machine is a Brother PQ1500SL... heavy duty home machine...only does straight stitch but is a great machine
This was very helpful. How can I get your written directions? I received one for Christmas last year and I use it all the time.
Let me see if I can send to you 😊
Excellent Tutorial!!
I tend to sew over my pins 😮 have some bent pins...oh well
If you make a smaller cozy do you change the dart measurement? Love the video!
I would just make the square smaller...I made a few about 8 inch but kept dart the same
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever seen of making bowl cozies. You are a wealth of knowledge!
What size sewing needle do you recommend? I made a large makeup bag with fusible fleece using a size 14 needle and there were many skipped stitches.
To get through all the layers I do use a size 14 needle
There’s a video called What Needle do I Need, by Fabric Patch.
@@louisevannorden2001 I had seen the video before. I end up using size 100/16 for bags because size 14 denim needle causes skipped stitches.
Just finished a set of these with watermelon fabric. So cute! What type of water do you use in that cute iron.
Probably distilled
Nope...just tap water...hasn't been a problem
Thank you! I have hard water, so it ruins a lot of stuff.
What is the tension setting when sewing all pieces together?? I'm having some problems with my needle stopping and I do t know what to do??
Every machine is different--try less pressure on foot maybe? Will allow bulky fabric to go through the feed dogs easier
Do you open the dart seams when you press them ?
Yes I do press them open--with the batting--it makes them flatter
Edit...I stopped pressing the darts open...I just trim really close and once I turn the bowl right-side out...When I press the edges...the dart flattens out
Thanks
Where did you get your ironing board? I love how small it is (spacesaver)
That actually was my mother's and is older but you can find something similar at Walmart or online...it is a Dritz brand
How are you sewing across the pins???? 😮😮
It's a bad habit to see across pins but I have been doing it since I was 9!...take them out as you go
Is it important to use a piece of batting on each side! Is one too thin to suffice!?
It should be 2 pieces...1 is too thin and the bowl will be hard to hold
I really liked your video and successfully made a bowl cozy following it. However when I washed it, it shrunk and looked terrible. It is still usable but I won't be making any for gifts until I figure out what went wrong. Should I have prewashed my fabric?
I don't prewash...but recommend when washing to take out of washer and stretch to shape and air dry...
The batting and fabric are cotton so they do shrink...and I find they don't need washing very often
@@amweg21 Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that.
I’m curious as to why you don’t wash the fabric prior to use to avoid shrinkage when you wash the bowl cozy.
I don't wash it because I don't wash the batting...sounds quite tedious to do that so it all shrinks at the same time...they never loom as neat as when 1st sewn 😃 but still useful
I too would like a copy of the written instructions please.
Do you prewash the fabric?
No I don't--I replied farther up if you need more info
Allison, how do I obtain your written instructions please? Thank you!!
The instructions were only for the class I taught...I will post if I can and let you know
What kind of batting are you using
100% cotton...Wrap and Zap batting...I get it in a package at Walmart
Do you have to wash the fabric first?
I don't...but you can...problem is that the batting thread and fabric need to be 100% cotton so 1st time you wash the bowl...it will shrink up a bit...just pull to shape and air dry
I have been looking for more of your tutorials but can’t find them. Help 😢!
I only have one other that was videoed---Allison's In-Depth Mask Tutorial --have taught a couple more Zoom classes--but didn't video them...sorry!
Can you give me standard sized darts for a 10 inch cozy, 8 inch cozy and 12 inch cozy? I know you can make different darts but I’m looking for more of a size size of darts.
The darts are 2.5 inches...if you cut the fabric the 8 or 12 inch size...you can still use the same length dart
Of course! Why didn’t I think of that?😊♥️
I took a class and added an extra circle of batting in the center to protect your surface or hands a little more.
Do you prewash your fabric before making?
No I don't
What brand of travel iron do you have ?
It's one I got on Amazon...not sure of brand...sorry!
Thank you thank you! Mine finally wasn’t thrown n trash can.
Glad to help!
What about more quilting added to keep fabric and batting together
You can certainly do that...I have seen other makers who do more quilting...I just find you don't need to do that
The easiest is 10 in layer cakes Joann has them and most all quilt shops no cutting
Do you have a link for that mini steam iron?
I have bought several of the mini irons at Walmart...under $15
How big should my squares be for a larger soup bowl? Currently I do the 10 ", but they're too small for the next size up bowl. Thank you.
I always just do 10" squares...size up maybe 2" to make them larger and just do everything the same...good luck
Should the batting be 9 inches or 9 and half
9.5"
What is the name of the little black ruler you used please
Think it is a Dritz ruler--Walmart and Joann carries them
It is called a sliding gauge ruler that is usually used for marking hems.
I don't prewash...when you wash the bowl...just stretch it out a bit and air dry...the fabric will shrink some along with the batting...
@@amweg21 Agree. I don't wash anything before hand. If there is any shrinkage the batting and fabric kind of shrink the same. I put mine in the dryer and when I take them out of the dryer I stretch and smooth and shape and they look just fine.
Please can you tell me the name of the ruler you used
It is a 6" ruler with a slide...have used them for years...probably from Walmart or Joanns in sewing notions
Think it's a Dritz ruler
i like bigger darts it makes it not such a flat cozy
I have done bigger darts...these are about 2.5"
I iii was told no needle punch or wading with scrim as they are not suitable for microwave
Wrap and Zap 100% cotton batting has no scrim
I have been sewing since I was 10 yrs
Old
I was 9! 4-H class 😊
Iis this a mercerized cotton thread?
Not sure...just a cotton thread
I love your fabric! Turquoise is my favorite color. Is your iron rechargeable? Did you put the line going down the right side of your presser foot or did it come that way?
Iron is plug in
And I drew the line with a fine point indelible marker...really helps
