Why do people HATE the True Geordie? (a fan’s perspective)

- True Geordie and Laurence McKenna were once two pillars in the UK RUclips scene, having led the biggest online football live show and hosting podcasts with A-List celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Louis Theroux and Tyson Fury.
In this video, we discuss the path of controversy that has led to the two to becoming commonly ridiculed and wether this is deserved.

Thanks for taking the time to look into some of this stuff and think about some of it more. Brian is and was an innovator and you’re right, I did grow from being associated with him. I like to think I also innovated in that time. McKola is a lovely guy by the way, I have no problem with him. Just football rivalry.
@@laurencemckenna Hey man, thanks for watching the video. You are a huge inspiration and i’ve been a fan of you for years. You had a massive part in the success of the podcast and the kick off, I really hope i did make that clear. Not to mention your own career outside of that, which is fantastic. I loved the documentary you made on Liverpool, despite myself being a united fan.
I’ve spent 1000s of hours listening to you, it’s an honour that you spent 20 minutes listening to me!
Obviously the McKola stuff was speculation (mainly from the Goldbridge podcast), sorry if I didn’t make that clear haha i didn’t script this I just went of a list.
Look at Brian's content before you, then look at the content when you were there and now look at it after you've left. It's clear to see you were the one innovating. Geordie is/was a great speaker and personality. But you had that AND the innovation, and I think it's about time you get the recognition.
❤
There's a black hole in the RUclips football space without you two, I grew up with your content and I hope you guys can come back to the pod again someday. Your original loyal fanbase will always be there

Jackmaate calling lawrence out for saying who are you about a bunch of smaller youtubers and criticising the stream quality was still correct though. The fact that the guy on there also took money has no bearing on what lawrence said. Thats just whataboutism
@@sparkyy2890 yeah alot of people feel that way and its fair. For me, if i was him then a phone call would have probably sufficed. As someone with a smaller channel, i personally don’t see what was so wrong with what loz said though at the same time, i dont think the jokes were particularly funny. Strangely it was one of the few streams at the time that i missed, knowing what the chat was like though they probably were complicit and people forget that.
@@sparkyy2890 the money thing is worth mentioning because to me, its evidence that the guy (tom i think) was virtue signalling. It’s unfortunate though bc this had potential to be an annual event and he ruined it the second year by stealing all the funding.
He could still say he thinks laurance was being a jerk for that while calling out the guy robbing the charity
Hold on, no one had any problem with raising legit issues but Jack edited the clips to make it look way different than it was on stream and the record should show that but Jack has a history of bullying others with his numbers and then crying foul. He literally went on a livestream the evening that he uploaded that video and was gleeful with the potential damage it would do to me, knowing that what he had done was misleading but complex to reply to without issue. Jack has never replied to me about it and refuses to be in a room with me to this day. Shady and should be called out. He also used the charity event as a weapon, not many people question that but come at me about this.
@@theoutsiderjess1869 He didn't say that and is rarely consistent so let's not hold our breath here.
Love that this video popped up, you articulate well what I'm sure a lot of fans from the early podcast days feel, I was and still am not a football fan, so the kick off was a take or leave for me, and selfishly I didn't want it to be as successful as it was as I felt it was detracting from the podcasts, I just enjoyed the journey Brian and Laurence were on, and they balanced each other out.
In the end, after everything that has happened, I still think he could find his way back to the deep & meaningful long form content, but commercially its probably really difficult, but it would definitely be a fan service, as i'm sure there's still plenty of us around who would be supportive. On the other hand, I really don't blame him if that doesn't happen, as ultimately it would involve him having to once more open up more and be more vulnerable, which after what happened a few years ago I can fully understand why that might be to much of a risk for him.
The podcast space is now so crowded and commercialised with utter trash, I think an anti of that would be welcomed with open arms, but as I said it would be a fan service, rather than something that would work commercially perhaps.
Great video! I'm glad the algorithm did its work today.
@@griffboy glad you enjoyed the video! I am so happy it connected with people who were fans as i was.
I did enjoy the kick off but strangely enough, i feel more like you did but now. I dont understand why hes even continuing that show in the way he is unless theres some sort of decent financial incentive, the show went from being a genre pushing live show to a zoom call.
He has spoken in the past about the death of long form content, he seems to feel that short form content has ruined the culture we used to have in podcast media. I agree with him a little, most podcasts that seem super successful and get millions of likes on clips, barely get more than 10k views on youtube. At the same time though, there are successful forms of longer content on the website. Hed know better than me though
I like how he’s actually talking about current stuff, and stuff which not many people will want to talk about. I like how Americans are starting to watch his content and he’s able to point out stuff in Britain which needs more outside eyes and needs highlighting
For Hughwizzy specifically, tbf to him, his streams nowadays don't really pull the number they used to because he took a reaaally long break after he almost lost his channel after it was flooded with false copyright strike a few years ago. Hell, dude practically disappeared for a year without news from his social whatsoever at one point, so I don't think pulling his recent numbers is fair.
Back when he just got out of the Kickoff, his streams used to hover around 1 - 3k ish viewers depending on the watchalong. Sure, it's no peak kick off number, but for a solo streamer? It's pretty darn good.
@@m.zpratama3490 by no means was i saying he doesn’t deserve lots of viewers ect, i think he was class and especially on the kick off he was one of the better guests. I didnt realise he took time off but thanks for telling me haha.
I know hes been on the club recently, i hope hes doing well. Again, hes one of the better people on this website
@himaxchampion oh, I didn't mean to imply that of you. Sorry about that, lol.
I just wanted to correct some misinformation since I've been following him since his pre-kick off days. And as an addendum, another reason why he took that break was because he started a podcast of his own. Unfortunately, it didn't take off due to various reasons.
But, yes. He's class. It's such a shame about the main reason that led him to taking that break. IiRC, RUclips didn't help him at all unfortunately...
TBH his best work is his Pain Game channel but then I'm a Boxing/MMA nut. His main stuff I'll watch if I want to but his best stuff is Pain Game.

@@donnieg5249 if there is one thing Rory has, its charisma. He can talk hours on end and be entertaining, thats a real challenge. @@himaxchampionRory has charisma in the same way Brian has fitness
I found it hard to relate to his words as he has the 'true' persona but some elements of his personal life seemingly never made it to air. Allegedly he is/was married but that is never mentioned AFAIK
@@jamessuter8226 so i have heard this rumour that he was married but I have never actually seen anything to back it. Honestly its his private life, and the “true” persona relates more to his opinion. I am pretty confident he is in a relationship now from what he’s said online.
@Jamie-o6v i think the true aspect of his name was there to represent his bluntness on newcastle united anyway not his alleged marriage haha
No, this guy is 100% correct. If you watched TG at the beginning of his RUclips career he would frequently mention his wife, after he made it big and switched from his football reaction/commentary style videos to the podcasting style he erased any shred of evidence or mention of her from all his socials. The guy is just a fake and a fraud. His whole story about his ‘first video’ the Nile Ranger one is false, there was videos prior to this. His whole persona is a “true” straight talking no BS guy, and he is anything but. It’s also alleged he has a child from this marriage. Fake Geordie
It’s hard to summarise a lot of thought in a short comment. His views on women are interesting having listened to a number of videos. For sure some go how some women are blood suckers etc. given he may have been married his perspective on that would have been interesting. But he is not obliged to tell all
@@jamessuter8226 i do think its worth saying he has clearly got respect for women too. Hes one of the few podcasters that has had actual women on and not OF creators. Emma Kenny and Holly Mathews were incredible
Great video man glad to finally see someone openly talking about their opinions on a situation but also looking on both sides of the story. Definitely should carry on these types of videos for other RUclipsrs or people you’re interested in. You definitely have a lot of potential on this channel 👍
@AlfieWild-qd3qd yeah ive seen a few videos on the situation in the last years, but i think as someone who has probably consumed every single bit of content hes made i can offer more of a fair perspective.
Thank you for the praise btw, i appreciate it :)
Great video man! I loved the podcast, nothing has topped since for me. Especially the early ones, just him and Lawrence, it was so naturally funny and engaging. despite Brian saying some things that maybe he shouldn’t have, there was Lawrence there to step in and also Brian himself seemed far more self aware and reflective. I think the problem was early on, especially during the kick offs peak, was that Lawrence started to become unpopular for different reasons, and that they both seemed to have a massive ego trip.
Brian didn’t deserve to lose as much as he did and have friends move on so quickly without him, but he also can’t blame them as realistically it’s a business. he should’ve known even just one comment like that would completely flip things.
I think Lawrence showed a lot of good reflection and respect in his interview with Goldbrige (which was awful because Mark didn’t actually let loz talk). But when he could make points during the conversation it seemed like he’d grown since it all.
The whole Trump/extremist&sexist content isn’t too much of a surprise as I think Brian always seemed to have views like that unfortunately, the difference was before us that he would have been more balanced at the very least, especially with loz there.
The one thing I disagree on was the point you made about how the organisers of the charity event being involved in a scandal following it therefore made Loz’s comments okay.
He said some nasty and arrogant things about individuals who were merely there to play football and raise money, and it was clear to so many people around the time, even without the video from Jaackmaate, that he had crossed the line and needed to humble himself.
Thankfully loz, like I said before, seems to have reflected and grown since then.
Essay over!
Thanks for the comment man, I am glad you enjoyed the video and apprecciate your comment!
My point about the charity event scandal is more that the criticisms on the Happy Hour pod came from a bad place, and that you had people on that podcast criticising Loz when what they were doing is objectively worse (Almost to a comical point when you consider he was taking money from a chariy cause). I think it is fair that fans were upset and I can even understand Jaacks reasons for making a video, but it gave alot of validation to the people who hated Loz for no fair reason.
I think your point regarding the downfall beginning when the Kick Off was at its peak is completely correct. I remember the discourse online and its similar to what Goldbridge gets now, for some reason its almost impossible to please football fans on mass and it doesn't help when you have mainstream Journalists and pundits all working together to take you down.
I am glad this video has connected with people who were such big fans of the True Geordie channel, like the two of us. It felt good to get this off my chest
@@himaxchampion agreed mate, I probably should’ve said in my comment I agreed with the jaackmaate and organisers criticism because you’re spot on. Thanks for taking the time to reply 👍🏻

I have no issues with the guy, hes a guy putting himself on a camera and talking about stuff, you may agree with some stuff he says and disagree with some stuff he says, that is called life. You will find no one on this planet you agree 100% with. People need to grow up and just either enjoy the content or not watch it, the same they do with everything else.
@@r4vr4c we live in such a hateful culture anyway tbh, because of twitter and tiktok its easy to get likes just for saying “i hate this guy” and clearly it gives some people a dopamine rush. @@fearassassin5207 you got the wrong end of the stick, this isnt a hate video. His subscriber count had stopped growing since the tyson fury incident and even then, i dont really talk about views in this video. Im talking about the quality of video, which in my opinion has not been the same.
Again, this is by no means a hate video. I spend alot of time defending tg here actually
Also Lawrence not being part of the club/kickoff is great. One of those faux intellectual footy fans who’s never played a game of football in his life and can’t kick a ball straight. Talks the most shite
I always found Laurence smarmy & annoying, he felt kinda similar to Mike Majackalack in a way, Laurence seemed like a pseudo intellectual & insincere, it felt like he always had a very high opinion of himself & was arrogant, that Jack Maate video also didn’t help - not to say I like Jack Maate either, I don’t dislike him but idk something about him always felt slimy to me - regardless if the charity guy was taking money I still don’t think it excuses them because I don’t think they knew that at the time they were criticising it (unless Jack maate framed it that way to make them look bad & I just don’t know much about the situation, so I just ran with what I saw from Jack’s video). I think Laurence was incompatible with a lot of the video topics as well
did u see that in the most recent kick off video TG spoke about how recently loads of people have been commenting on his videos saying bring the studio back for the kick off and he said he can’t because he’s moved away from all the people he did the kick off with and now lives “in the middle of nowhere”
the reason I’m bringing this up isn’t even to do with the kick off it’s to do with his podcast, he hasn’t done a pod in months and months and I think this is more evidence to think that he wont be doing the podcast anymore especially not with guests. Don’t get me wrong I really do like his boxing content but I still think it’s abit sad cos his podcasts (even when he did them on his own with a guest) was always my favourite thing he did.
He did say though since moving he’s the happiest he’s ever been so you can’t really argue with it.

@@oneeyedjakes6336 i actually did see that, it made me feel really happy for him. Im glad hes away from London and living his best life, even if that means that the content isnt the same.
I do wish he gave more clarity earlier though, part of the reason videos like this one have been made is because of the lack of communication with fans. I get he doesn’t want drama ect, but when everything is changing so much i think the fans do deserve clarity. I saw a comment on that video asking for a life update podcast and i think thats a good idea, i know he wouldnt like to but it would be appreciated if he let everyone know what was going on in his life abit more.
Im glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for commenting
Im gonna be honest Geordie brought a lot of his pain unto himself and he unintentionally hurt those closest to him and his image with the Andrew tate thing. He built himself on the certain forest incident so what he said about Tate was just shocking to hear from everyone who heard it. i prefer True Geordie to stick to boxing and sports, because some of his political takes has been that good to say the least and are often extremely onesided and not relly being nuanced or in good faith, and it sounds more like he has a political agenda and tries to constantly frame one side as good and another one as bad instead of having a discussion or a real honest look into it, there are a lot of things you can criticize peapol that true Geordie has spoke highly off that Geordie himself seem to ignore or just jump over, it just is not a good look especially if you speak about political that is already a extremely subjective and polarizing topic,
i do think Geordie is alot more honest and argues in good faith a lot more when he speaks about boxing or sports in general and that's where i appreciate his blunt and straightforward demeanor but his political content just makes him look like a big question mark, i do not think True Geordie is a bad person but he tends to get on peapol nerves thank to his loud and unapologetic attitude, one thing i can give him credit for is that the guy at least speaks his mind most of the time even if it is pure nonsense sometimes and other times he has a good point, some things are good and some things are bad, some things i aggre with him on and other things i don't, and that is fine it is life but that of course does not mean Geordie does not have some stuff to work on and so do we as well
I like true Geordie tbh but I hate when he takes about certain people like fury or conor you can tell he can't remove his bias from things , 90 percent of his vids are pretty good but the 10 percent can be infuriating
@@martinwaby9946 the interesting thing is that he used to get accused of fanboying both of them. In my opinion, hes been more fair with Conor but he has definitely gone overboard with Tyson fury, his reactions whenever Tyson would get hit in a fight are borderline ridiculous. Assuming you watched the video, I never say I have a problem with that. And to say he "exposes the truth" is a stretch, he isn't a journalist. He reacts to other articles, which is fair because atleast he uses sources but his opinion and articles doesn't directly expose anything. If you agree with his opinions then fine, but personally i dont care about his political opinions
@himaxchampion more and more people can tell the mainstream narratives around trump and things like that are manipulation. He's just picking up on that. It's refreshing when "cancelled" people give zero fucks and just start speaking their mind because they don't care about keeping the mob onside anymore. Now Laurence isn't there he doesn't have to pretend he has the same boring left wing opinions and opinions acceptable to mainstream brands. He knows he can still get the occasional deal from brands who haven't to succumbed to the woke mind virus
The fallout with Laurence won’t ever sit well with me, however if you look through their timeline the Tate joke wasn’t the first time he’d left Laurence in a vulnerable situation (see the fall of True Geordie). Had a responsibility to protect those who were relying on him and he never. Hate the way it panned out but life goes on I suppose
I don't think it was as much a fall out as it was just that their relationship had needed to come to an end.
