    I wish you would start off directly giving us the 2 scales that you wanted to cover in this video. Show them without flying through. Then go into all the information you have. You give great information tho.

    Thank you so much for that, I have been playing for 2 years now and just decided to learn the different kinds of scales. I've been searching around on youtube and got some basics but some things just weren't clear enough, your lesson made me realize lots of things and it appears easier than I thought. Thank you very much again!

    Mind=Blown. Especially the 9`s and 7`s in a chord. All of that circulates around a major scale

  • @9mmghosty
    @9mmghosty 8 лет назад +5

    great stuff! a bit thick on the theory for my level...but ill get there.
    example, I know what makes a major chord a minor, lower the third a half step - i have no idea what makes any scale major or minor.
    the third not in that scale is a half step lower? no clue.
    really good stuff again. you are helping build confidence in themselves, speed, knowledge and technique will come, but its hard to get any if you think you suck...

    HI Erich. I'm no pro at playing lead. Been a bass player in my younger days. Only been playing around with lead for about 4 years now. My daughter bought me an electric guitar 4 years ago. The scale you just demo'd.......I have been practicing it for a while now and never knew it had a name, and all this time I thought I was just making it up as I went along because it sounded right. I'm retired and just playing for the hang or the fun of it with some backing tracks I download. Thanks for this video, I really appreciate your time and effort to teach others. You taught me a lot today. Regards from Johannesburg South Africa.

    I’m working with on Fiddle tunes with students with this scale like Billy in the low ground and The Eight of January. The closed major cage scale, the first in many, every other mode and scale I use derives from this initial scale, very important to know if you want to advance and learn the neck.

      there are 8 notes in a major scale , and when you get to 8 you repeat the scale going up in octaves. so the 2nd note of the major scale is the 9th. the 9 th is an octave higher than the 2nd. i'm just starting guitar but this makes a lot more sense on piano.

      Agreed.... The Hendrix stuff didn't sound poopy. I've been an acoustic guitarist for 50+ years. It sounds great.
      The reason I'm watching your lessons is that I"m teaching some friends guitar. I've taught myself guitar for years, so so much of this is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer, to me. But teaching some friends, it's not obvious to them.... You're a great teacher. Thanks for posting these. (Oh, I will be referring people to your site).

    Erich- thanks for your videos. I’m half way thru one of your books as well and really enjoying it.
    I like how you switch to the paired relative scale. Here’s my question, when you did that switch wouldn’t you start the scale on your pinky? I don’t know if modes apply to pentatonic scales otherwise wouldn’t you be doing the scale in a different mode. Hopefully the question isn’t too confusing. Thanks.

      Jay, some of what you say here sounds like you're on the right page. Yes, you do play the scale differently. Here on RUclips search, "your guitar sage pentatonic" for more details.

Are the scales part of another course? I only started playing a few weeks ago and everyone says the scales are the best thing to practice.

      +yourguitarsage Uuuuuugh minor keys, im glad I took music theory last year in school while they had it at lest I know what you are saying but minor keys were the bane of that class! I have not committed the time yet to checking out your website yet. As a quick question I am lost on where to go on. Since August I have been teaching myself guitar and it has been going well. I can play a simple version of Canon in D and More than Words by Extreme. I know all my major chords and minors. I know A couple of 7's which I like to barr (I dont really care much for voicing as long as I get the chord like I'll use Am barred for trickey ones that I can't play open.) I know this one jazzy chord I dont know its name but in open its (6-1) e-a-e-g#-c#-e which I just move around based on scale degree for some simple jazzy sounds. My big question is where to progress to in my learning. Also I see you wrote a book about mastering the guitar and where that was available and what your course is like/ how much does it cost.

      Whenever I practice anything whether it be chords or scales and be mindful of playing on my fingertips as taught I noticed that my pinkie won't go straight down but tends to roll outwards. Is this normal and something I just need to keep practicing at or is this just how some players play? Even when I physically try to correct it, it still fights me and stays rolled out so that instead of being hitting the string straight on my pinkie hits the string on its side.

    When you say "Minor scale" are you just lowering the third? The Mi?

    • @r.s.6727
      @r.s.6727 8 лет назад

      A minor scale is just the major scale for that same root note (ex: A major to A minor) where the third, sixth and seventh notes are lowered by a half-step, also called a semi tone. So if A Major is: A B C# D E F# G# A and then so on, then A minor would be: A B C D E F G A.

    • @nagymaba6694
      @nagymaba6694 8 лет назад

      +Robert Schenck The reason I was confused is because there are multiple minor scales. the one you just explained is the Natural Minor.

    I'm confused... another youtuber taught the pentatonic as open e, 3,5,6,7 on the first string then 5,7 on second and 5,7,9 on third. Then 7,9 on fourth. Then 8,10,12 on fifth and finally 10,12 on the sixth (high e)... I May have said the string names opposite.... as high e is first and low e is sixth? 😅

    Just a tip, use a guitar with fret markers for the viewers

      Fret markers will make you go blind...

      I'm curious, is that because one relies on them too much?

    That guitar sounds way better than the jumbo,,, it could just be new strings but I don't think so.
    Is that a Takamine?

    • @yourguitarsage
      @yourguitarsage  7 лет назад

      Thanks Jay! Yes it is. It might be new strings, because next to the jumbo body in my studio, there is no comparison.

      YourGuitarSage it really sounds good, every note tone and interval seem to ring out but not like a piano as my Tinker does,,,, I like both but your D28 is the very best

    Is it possible to learn how to play guitar simply by watching guitar videos, in other words, free lessons? I recognize the idea that a teacher can spot flaws in playing and attempt to correct them, but don't "flaws" become an asset OR a style of playing? So...what are the advantages to having a "live" teacher?

    For me, the hard part is not understanding the theory, but rather knowing where on the neck the G notes or the A notes og E notes etc are :| cant really find anywhere online that explains and shows it in a good way either.. sigh
