I for some time thought the pentatonic scale was a lazy guitarist’s way to sound good, or at least not sound bad. Then, I started transcribing other instrumentalist’s solos (sax, trumpet, piano) and began to realize all soloists use pentatonics in all kinds of creative ways. I then fully embraced “pentacism”.
Now that I think about it, we delved into cultural Asian music back when I studied music in school. Most of them used pentatonic or septatonic scale systems. It’s really eye opening now how the pentatonic scale is so influential not just in western music but throughout the world
Pentatonics are only boring/lazy when the harmony is stationary or if it let's you use the same one during the whole solo and you play it up and down or with the same cliché licks
Love your teaching style, man! Equal parts cerebral, spiritual, and thought provoking. You have great delivery, and I feel like I'm actually engaging with you in person.
This guy can make a loop while playing the chromatic scale. AND IT STILL SOUNDS AWESOME. There are some amazing gems in the video. I am thankful for the RUclips algorithms for suggesting this and thank Rotem for making it.
The huge sound of Coltrane, Maccoy and later on Kurt Rosenwinkel. Pentatonic is also natural instinct of human being. I don’t like blues but I admire pentatonic.
Rotem, love these ideas,---thank you. I've been working on something I'd like to share,---playing the form alternating between the lower and higher notes of the 2-notes-per-string version of the pentatonic, but only playing one note per string. For example, the ascending version of the Am in the 5th fret would be, A-E-G-D-E-C; the decend A-G-C-A-D-C. I sweep pick both forms, and of course use all 5 positions of the scale. Hope everyone can make use of this idea...
This is the second presentation of yours I watched. I find you and the materials you present very interesting. The passion you exhibit for music and guitar are evident, making the viewing experience more enjoyable I have more presentations from you I need to watch. Thank you!
the three note per string pattern really helps in seeing the pentatonic not just as 5 individual boxes and knowing how to move between them, but it helps tremendously in breaking out of the "box thinking". will definitely use that more in my playing. thank you so much for these insights Rotem!
An interesting clip to check out here on YT is Bobby Darin performing Bridge Over Trouble Water live in the 70s just a few months before his untimely death. Darin was able to play several instruments but this performance featured him playing a harmonica solo over the bridge while the back up singers sang the part. Darin accidentally picks up the wrong harp and tries to make it work but then just shrugs his shoulders walks back over to the piano and grabs the right one and continues on without missing a beat. He of course knew that he would pass away as a young person, and for him there didn't seem to be such a thing as a mistake. Pretty awesome. Thanks for all your videos and Happy New Year Cheers
LOL - I disrespected and judged all Blues players for using and overusing the pentatonic... *until I heard Plini...* his brilliant phrasing to intersperse Pentatonic lines into his extended chord progression blows my mind. I realized, it's not a failing of other musicians, nor the scale itself (being simple) it's how it's being used or misused that offends me most.
Well Franco is my favourite African guitarist and this starts tapping into his approach, especially on his treatment of the Bolero sound. Very cool, thanks. Give Franco a spin, the minor stuff.
Thank you so much Rotem... i play acoustic guitar, for a bit over 30 years now, but I really didn't push into growth until a few years ago. I play on our worship team at our church so I have been very encouraged to learn more about music and such. I don't know much about scales or lead but I love finding new ways to play the chords which has lead me to finding some beautiful jazzy type voicings. I want to explore scales and triads and such as part of those voices and I think I'm going to sign up for your Patreon. It may be a month or so before I do, gotta clear my table so I can concentrate but thank you for this great lesson. I look forward to learning more! As for mistakes, I love that you left that in the video. It's so encouraging to see people deal with mistakes in such a positive manner, so I'll share my recent mistake lol Sunday morning service, we were doing a song that we have done several times before. But, we changed the key several times trying to get it in a similar key to the other songs we were playing for a good continuous sound. Well, cue the mistake lol I made several note changes to my notes but didn't make the final one. The song started out with a good solid acoustic guitar progression to set the pace and rhythm of the song and I full on sold it.... in the wrong key lol the team looked at me odd, scrambled around a few seconds and I had to call it... into the mic I go lol "sorry guys, wrong key :D" sometimes you just gotta own it, laugh it off, and make the correction lol live audience AND live stream *head in hands* lol
Man this is really cool, thank you! Classical guitarist here. I'm super up for learning more jazz, but always feel quite overwhelmed by a lot of theoretical content and how to practice it usefully. This seems like just place to dive in! Love the sounds
Dive in fully a few years from now you’ll see the water isn’t that deep. And you’ll be more oriented and what you think is hard and overwhelming now will look like baby music to you. Keep evolving to your max!
@@OM-md6ki and after years, relearning those baby things is so refreshing sometimes, because we're often go so far that we forget where we ever were and so it seems like a new place when we come back, like rediscovering some of these simple pentatonic pleasures.
Heya Rotem, Just want you to know how thankful I am for you, your journey and sharing your journey with Us, Me.... You talk to my soul Brother, much love from Australia,
2:39 The way you played those single notes are magnificent. I’ve never heard someone can make a ascending scale sound so beautiful! And your dynamic, it’s just… it must take years of work. Love your playing, cheers.
Great vid once again Rotem. I would love to hear about your daily music/practice routine and how it fits into your day to day tasks. When during the day to you practice scales? When do you do work on writing songs? This is just something I have been thinking about as I have gotten really into guitar this last year.
Fantastic lesson! Taking the basic pentatonic at face value is often thought of as beginner, or easy. With a bit of imagination tons of juicy ideas present themselves! Thank you!
Thank you. Very good reminder o. If thinking about it, one have played it the hole time eventualy without being aware one did. Neutraly remove any amount of 12 or more notes to remain 5.
nice lesson thanks. I've been suck with a couple of doubles top shapes in box 1 and 2 and was always interested in 3NPS pentatonics so thx for sharing. I'm struggling with such wide stretches for that atm though.
9:39 you could say it's a mistake or you could say it's jazz 😅 For real though, pentatonic is best when you mix in all the extra notes to make things more interesting. Switching between major/minor 3rds, flat 5ths etc. Also enjoy trying to connect shapes 3 notes per string as well as just the standard box shapes.
I have played lead guitar for decades and I only know the Pentatonic scales. They are the most melodic scales and work with all styles of music. I learned other modes but none of them sound as good as the Pentatonic shapes so why bother. Every single time someone has noticed I only use the Pentatonic it was another guitar player. No one else notices or cares. As long as the songs signature licks are there you can just shred the Pentatonic the rest of the time and people will love it.
Thanks man, this video helped me see the pentatonic as more than just a group of notes. I can utilise the notes as chords and make every sound a lot more melodic and pretty.
First of all thanks for all of this you are more clear and your exemples are more useful than most of other professore gave me. I don t know if it was already asked but i would like ti know what Guitar Is this and what kind of pick ups you have on it
I have a question. When it is said that the strings are a 4th apart ( top 4 strings) this is not true as EADGBE is not a scale where note associations occur such as 3rd, 4th,5th, etc. But even so the interval on the top 4 strings are 5 semitones= 5 steps, not 4. The notes are in E minor but completely out of sequence. And not P5 either as WWHWWWH does not apply. What is happening here?
Great video, there is a lot of homework here. But one question about your guitar.I’m a fender mustang fan and have one and a Jaguar. I’m curious what is yours. Thanks JS.
What's your new year's resolution??
To learn more Jazz
To practice moreee. ✨
Try to learn theory on the guitar and piano :)
Depends what key I'm in 😁😁🤣🤣
to find out and get into jazz as i know nothing of it.

Couldn't agree more, it's kind of the backbone of Western music. The Pentatonic is always present lurking underneath regardless of scale.
I had this EXACT same revelation, only it was when transcribing vocals.
We should spread the new Pentacostal to the masses

check out pink floyd. David Gilmour just makes his guitar singing using the pentatonic
this is a fantastic lesson been playing pentatnics for literally years and this is a great way to think about them helped alot thank you :)

Level 6 is my personal best, phenomenal way of re-arranging the pentatonic scale
This video shows what you can do with a pentatonic box when you start thinking outside the... well, box. 🙂
Thank you, Rotem!

Disrespecting all blues players for using pentatonic is like disrespecting impressionist painters because they realized blurred images

Super interesting. The Big Arp is next level. Loving these fresh ideas! Thank you.
Pentatonic scales helped most to teach me how to find notes across the fretboard. Opens up a world of possibility imo.

Worth the view just for the “making and excepting mistakes” moment!
