If you know the game's plot, you know why King Regis didn't even bother to restrain him. Everyone in that throne room were dead men and didn't even realize it.
Alex H. No he didn't. Nyx are the one that warned him that they wanted to attack lucius. Regis did know the attack is coming bit he didn"t know when until nyx warned him.
That added detail of that boot on the step was such a nice touch. Whether you know the character's history or not watching this, it conveys the same message: He owns the place, respects nobody in it despite the false pleasantries, and could kill any of them without a second thought if it didn't amuse him so much to toy with them. Tiny details like that in a scene are what bring these stories and the characters within to life.
This is the brilliance of Ardyn's character. Until you finish FFXV, you question why the hell no one bothered to kill the guy yet (let alone at least shut him up). ... It isn't until after the endgame when you realize he is literally unkillable and does whatever he wants.
If you know the plot to FFXV (more specifically what happened to Ardyn) you can't help but feel sorry for him as he was truly screwed over. Darin de Paul did an awesome job voicing him!
This scene takes an entirely different meaning when you finish the game... Holy shit, this dude is an awesome antagonist, probably my favourite in a video game. Knowing what this dude can do, and what he goes onto to do later on... it's chilling
Ardyn was the *only* good thing - no, only *great* thing to come out of that game. Easily the most complex antagonist in the entire FF franchise, surpassing even the likes of Kefka, Kuja, and Sephiroth. He got his goal from beginning to end, even if it was bittersweet for him (since he was doing what Bahamut wanted him to do the whole damn time).
True. He comes off as an arrogant imperial mocking the king's court. It's pretty much true, but it's so much more than that for him, too. And Regis didn't even recognize him from before. Not that he could, even though the game chooses to let the player see Ardyn as himself, he was in disguise when Regis and Ardyn first met.
@Orcaluv26 I like Kuja as a villain, but he was rather simple. He couldn't handle that his life was so short, so he wasted it trying to end the lives of everyone else around him. There wasn't much depth beyond that, really.
@Orcaluv26 Ardyn and Caius are the most complex villains in FF. Both are strong AF, since Caius was the heart of darkness himself and Ardyn was immortal too and incredibly strong. Even so, I think Kefka is my favorite FF villain. He's so easy to underestimate but became a god himself! (A psycho one.) I really loved that about FF VI. Kefka and Ardyn are the only ones that really destroyed the world.

0:13 Here you can see Regis recognized the man that 30 years ago attacked the city and kicked his ass and knew he had to take his son out of the city at once
You know watching this after playing Episode Ardyn......makes you realize just how much of troll Ardyn truly is and that Regis either forgot how much a beating he took at Ardyns hands(or he had his disguise up all that time even during battle) or just realized that even if they tried anything Ardyn would just crush them.
In Ignis' episode in Brotherhood Final Fantasy XV, he tells Ignis that maintaining the wall is sapping him of his energy, requiring him a cane to walk, and he later tells Noctis that he is having difficulty summoning weapons. Plus his target, the True King was already born and reached adulthood by then, thus making Regis and the rest of the rabble at Insomnia loose ends at that point, so he let the empire deal with them.
Court protocol, sending Ardyn without guards is ceremoniously an insult. Even if the big boss is the strongest man in the world you send guards to show that he is important to his home nation and that they consider your court/nation a worthy threat/rival. By sending him alone, it says two things: You can kill him, we don't care. Or: You WON'T kill him, you wouldn't dare provoke us.

@@squallofthedai Well, I didnt say he cares about that. I just said that it's a loss for him regardless since he has already submitted to Bahamut and played his stupid game.
regis did, the terrible burden he reluctantly put on noct was in reference to his destiny to defeat ardyn, Lunafreya also knew but neither told noctis directly though it can be assumed both wanted to.
I doubt that anyone other than Luna knew. Regis only knew Noctis's fate and was helpless to avoid it as he was chosen by the Crystal. He was looking very serious in this scene because of the peace treaty, the concern of his son, and Luna whom he couldn't save back then. Luna probably knew, as shown when she touched Ardyn's hand and started to have effect on him as a host of daemons with the power of the Oracle. Well, she's the Oracle and her job is to prevent the Starscourge from happening so she probably knew about Ardyn. It's just either before or right after she touched him.
I think his approach to the throne is meant to be threatening and to show disrespect. Regis knows that he is about to lose the war, hence he cant afford to kick out Ardyn. And Ardyn know that Regis know, so he can walk up that stairs like Niflheim walks into Lucis territory. It's a gesture of dominance.
MoreImbaThanYou That, and I think Ardyn felt a sense of belonging. That throne was the one stolen from him so long ago, even when he was the rightful heir. He didn't care what Regis thought, to Ardyn, he was emblematic of the false king that stole his fate from him. He thought that a descendent of his own bloodline should be sitting the throne, not one of an imposter. He viewed Regis as a "false" Lucius Caelum.
He could he been more fleshed out in the game, but despite that, he is a very great antagonist. He is as tragic as Kuja and achieved his goal, like Vayne did.
Thank you for uploading this scene in its entirety. This beautiful man just steals the show and over time I have come to absolutely fall in love with him. This delightful bullshitter is one hell of a man. Once more I offer my deepest thanks. I own this movie twice and it makes me cry every time.
He did recognize Ardyn, not as the Accursed, but as the Chancellor. No one knows Ardyn's true identity except Luna (because of Gentiana) and even that is unknown on how long she knew. Remember Ardyn's name has been erased from history, possibly multiple times given what he said to Noctis. The only ones who'd have know who he was the entire time would be Ardyn himself and the Astrals.
@@DarthDragon007 Regis knew man. Doesn't matter if he was disguised. The Ring of Lucii contains the soul of Somnus, his brother. Regis would've easily discovered this fact after communing with the old Kings. Besides, if Ravus could see through Ardyn's ruse then of course Regis with the Ring could
Ardyn is such a badass. Watching the movie and going through the storyline of the game really puts things into context. He's such a tragic character (rivaled only by Sephiroth in that regard imo) and yet, at the same time, such a mischievous problem maker. He's the wisest and most dangerous man in that room, and he knows it. This scene gives me the impression of a tiger walking politely into a room full of rabbits and speaking in a friendly tone while sharpening his claws. I kind of wish they _had_ tried to restrain him. Would have been funny to watch Ardyn effortlessly turn Regis' guard into a pile of corpses then politely ask Regis to tea. lol
Ardyn got what he deserved and what he wanted. He basically destroyed the world, enslaved a god - killed other gods, killed a lot of good and innocent people, for revenge against someone who didn't do anything wrong that we actually know of (the only perspective we have of Mystic and Ardyn's interactions is how Ardyn saw it and that's clearly biased) who has been dead for possibly thousands of years. All because he was slurping down demons and becoming crazy in the process.
@Feli Aslan Indeed. The moment he discovered his birth he stopped being the pawn that the scientists wanted to be and decided to take his mothers role in conquest of the Galaxy. After all, practically every encounter with him throughout the game is literally him using his own mother to commit horrific acts, and literally used chunks of her as monsters in his delaying tactic to buy himself more time. The only "tragedy" was in his fall, and by the completion of that he had become a master mind. He knew what he had to do to absorb the mana absorbed in the crust in the planet to become the ultimate mega being. Tragic was the ending of the heroes. I always had the impression that most of them were killed when the meteor struck. Kuja from FF9 wasn't really tragic either, as he was an absolute ruthless arse before he even found out his lifespan was limited to no more then a few years, yet that same thread was tragic to Iviv who was a fantastic guy who literally only had years to live, and he didn't even survive long enough to see his great friend return.
@Feli Aslan Actually, that is a fantastic point, you are correct. It's been a long time since I've played FF9, perhaps I should find time to do so again.
Watching this scene after Episode Ardyn in 2019 and highly convinced King Regis's facial and body expressions aren't just cuz Niflheim's chancellor walked in. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.
Raine Ae’Yda You’d be right. The greatest thing is that since Episode Ardyn came looong after the movie, Sean Bean didn’t have that to go off of when he was doing that scene. Which means the whole scene is just so good and so subtly done by Bean and DePaul that it’s so easy to sit there and go ‘Regis knowwws’ when we watch it now.
The eccentricity and dialect of Cid (FF12), the underlying madness of Kefka (FF6), and the ruthlessness of Sephiroth (FF7)...poof! Ardyn Izunia, the most interesting character in FF15.
Yeah. He instantly became calm as soon as Ardyn showed up, indicating he knew who and what the man in front of him could do- blazing the entire Insomnia until that real villain came and stopped him
Every people who play Episode Ardyn definitely came to observe how intense the atmosphere when Ardyn stepped in.His movement was indeed reversed to his speech.

I played the game first and then watched the film and let me tell you, Ardyn is by far my favorite character and antagonist in the entire FF series to date! I love the voice actor's performance and the motion capture is absolutely breathtaking, I just can't believe this is actually an animated film. Compared to Advent Children that came out in 2007, they have really improved on the CGI! I really wish SE had done better for the main story and its lore, rather than putting so much effort on the side-quests and other menial characters that have nothing to do with the story :(
That look on King Regis's face! Say whatever you guys will. That to me is anything but anger. That my friends is FEAR. I take it Regis is fully aware whose throne he's sitting on, even his ancestors and his father and his predecessors knew of their thievery let alone that man coming back to collect their debt!! Karma's a bitch I'd say. Nothing personal, Regis!
Um, Nine PointO... the only person who said Ardyn had anything stolen from him WAS ARDYN. Biased account, much? The gods gave his brother the Ring and Crystal to defend AGAINST ARDYN. Which means something was going on with Ardyn that made them believe mortals needed godly magical powers to try and keep him in check. Considering how he is these days I can easily imagine that taking all those daemons out of people started out as a good thing and he was a good man, but you can only touch so much corruption before becoming tainted yourself. For all we know he became some sort of super-daemonic nexus, and even though he thinks he was still a good guy, he was actually quite mad and evil and the gods armed his brother and put him on the throne to keep it from spreading. We only got one side of that story in regards to perspective. We got the whole story in regards to 'Ardyn eats daemons, brother ascends to throne with gods backing him'. Ardyn is the one who said he got dicked over, and he was currently an evil daemon god. Would you really take the word of someone who was so crazy he wanted to die and kill the whole world full of innocent people who hadn't hurt him or anyone as he went?
New diologe in the game has proven that Ardyn was once the first King of Lucii and Oracle. Not only that, but it was confirmed in some new dioluge that he was also supposed to be the King of Light.
Dear Ardyn, Please leave my algorithm, you're scaring me, and it feels like you're stalking me, even through my dreams that turn into a chase with me trying to get away from you. Thank you. -Mario Girl
0:52 - 0:55 Ardyn:...to offer terms of peace. (Whatever that is) Regis: Peace? (What?!) The facial expressions tell so much that the 'peace' offering is nothing more but a trap.
The funny thing is, not only does this scene have more significance after beating the game, but it goes even *further* when you play through Episode Ardyn. (Spoilers) 22 years prior to this scene, Ardyn invaded Insomnia and singlehandedly stripped back its defenses before fighting Regis AND a building-sized soldier of the Old Wall, and would have killed Regis (ending the line of Lucis before Noctis' birth) if not for an act of literal divine intervention. Regis here is aware not *only* of Ardyn's true identity, but the Lucian, Daemonic and even Divine powers at his disposal -- including that Ardyn hasn't aged a day since their confrontation. Ardyn climbing the steps isn't just a show of disrespect towards custom OR of personal familiarity with the throne itself; he's outright _goading_ the king, because they *both* know Regis would be absolutely powerless to stop the man had he wished to murder everyone present. The throne of Niflheim is waving their trump card in front of Regis' face, saying "Or you could refuse the treaty, while we already have our most dangerous weapon inside your capital. See how that turns out." That's why Regis is uneasy through the conversation, because he's being strong-armed with EVERY tool at Niflheim's disposal... and Ardyn is _relishing_ that.
Ardyn is disguising as a male Lucian guard by the time he attacked Regis. No one in the bloodline of Lucis (with the exception of Somnus) knew of Ardyn's identity.
uh actually regis didn’t know ardyn's true identity here cuz ardyn was disguised as a lucian guard back then he attacked regis. it's just that we see ardyn's true form in the game cuz we are playing from his perspective
What’s funny is we the players know who Ardyn is and what has transpired while the people in this room have no clue who they r dealing with including Regis. Didn’t Ardyn disguise himself so Regis couldn’t see his true form during that fight so long ago? Ardyn was definitely having a field day during this meeting that’s for sure.
1:47 , especially the face gesture on 1:50 When the time comes that from now on everyone will follow your plan throughout the game without having the remotest idea that in the end you're going to get away with leaving all Insomnia do your errands
Watching Kings Glaive again after playing Episode Ardyn made me feel really bad for him and a WHOLE new level of respect for the man. Without a doubt one of my favorites and one of the greatest antagonists Square Enix ever thought of.

This whole scene is pure genius. The writing, the acting, the direction... It isn't just good, it is really brilliant, which is not a quality I usually relate to the Final Fantasy property. Where did all of this quality go in the game?
While I do think the animation of the mouths are a bit odd at times in this movie, it is overall a masterpiece. Even without playing the game, it is a pretty good stand-alone movie. However, when you do play the game this movie is like a treat. It shows so many characters you haven't even heard of in the game itself or only hardly know. It shows you a new side of the plot and what is happening in Insomnia while Noctis is gone.

He means the Nvidia graphics cards titan x and that they need 4 in sli in order to make this kind of cgi as those are very powerful.
Really want this animation for everybody's favorite chocobros!
if you know the spoilers then this scene takes on a whole new meaning and sense of tension between ardyn and king regis.

Are you talking DLC?
@@TheDebu666 DLC basically said fuck you to this movie.
@@mikehuntburns9753 Not really though. I mean, Ardyn already proved he could 1v1 Regis in his prime so he could have killed everyone in the room easily. Regis could very well have recognized him and know how fucked he is but fulfill his role nonetheless.
He was disguised as a guard though, only we saw him as Ardyns true form
If you know the game's plot, you know why King Regis didn't even bother to restrain him. Everyone in that throne room were dead men and didn't even realize it.
Brady Gillespie did Regis know who he really was and that he was immortal?
George George no. regis didnt know
Regis did know that Niflheim was planning to betray them.
Alex H. No he didn't. Nyx are the one that warned him that they wanted to attack lucius. Regis did know the attack is coming bit he didn"t know when until nyx warned him.
nobody survives even one bit true, maybe it's more fitting to say he figured they'd betray him. Still, thank you for the correction. ^^
Darin de Paul's acting is ON POINT 👌👌
Light Kikib cue Geico storybook commercials for Darin de paul
Hell yeah!
keep in mind he voiced Reinhardt
This is the brilliance of Ardyn's character. Until you finish FFXV, you question why the hell no one bothered to kill the guy yet (let alone at least shut him up).
...
It isn't until after the endgame when you realize he is literally unkillable and does whatever he wants.
mas8705 Regis looks like he wanted to rip him apart. If you ask me he knew who Ardyn was
Would you perhaps say that Royalty recognizes Royalty?
Seems possible.

If you know the plot to FFXV (more specifically what happened to Ardyn) you can't help but feel sorry for him as he was truly screwed over.
Darin de Paul did an awesome job voicing him!
George John Jr I’m just a little confused, is there where he gets hanged?
Omg yes! I just commented on Darin's OUTSTANDING performance for Ardyn!
To me . Ardyn lucis caelum ở a really poor good man turn to the villain . To me bahamut is the godamn villain of the ffxv
"MUST...... RESIST....... URGE...... TO MURDER EVERYONE." -Ardyn's inner voice

They nailed Regis facial expressions. Dude is terrified here, but trying to look calm.

Suave Man you have a good point.
Gotta love how he just storms in like he owns the place all the same.
I like how regis says they sent ardyn without any guards even though he can wipe the floor with all of them
Court protocol, sending Ardyn without guards is ceremoniously an insult. Even if the big boss is the strongest man in the world you send guards to show that he is important to his home nation and that they consider your court/nation a worthy threat/rival. By sending him alone, it says two things: You can kill him, we don't care. Or: You WON'T kill him, you wouldn't dare provoke us.
I keep pausing the video at 1:07.
That face he makes when he purses his lips is so cute and mischievous. It melts my heart. 😍
I keep watching this over and over just to look at everybody's facial expressions. The technical mastery and attention to detail here is insane.
Tonberry Queen The CGI and heavy detail put into this film is simply breathtaking. Ardyn is such an awesome villain.

Tonberry Queen well, firat, he can't because he is a fictional character. second, even if he can, he won't because he is not interested in this kind of stuff not even one bit.

After playing the game it's interesting to watch how Ardyn approaches the throne. Makes me wonder if Regis knew who he was from the start.
DarkxBlood89 He did know. It looked like he wanted to rip his throat out
regis did, the terrible burden he reluctantly put on noct was in reference to his destiny to defeat ardyn, Lunafreya also knew but neither told noctis directly though it can be assumed both wanted to.
He viewed Regis as a "false" Lucius Caelum.
all it takes is just one bad day

He could he been more fleshed out in the game, but despite that, he is a very great antagonist. He is as tragic as Kuja and achieved his goal, like Vayne did.

Arguably, Kefka also achieved his goal until the very end (I argue he did achieve his goal, since the initial world was absolutely ruined).

@DeadMemes NeedToStayDead Yup, seeing how they've fought before and such and how everyone was literally at Ardyn's whims once he entered that room.
The look on Regis face at 0:14 almost as if he recognized him!
@@DarthDragon007 This guy beat Regis near death, of course he remember.

@@DarthDragon007 Agreed, for both versions.
Just Imagine if Ardyn actually introduced as himself at court. "Ardyn Lucis Caelum, off my chair jester."
@@Kayriel New DLC told me a diffirent story.

I think Regis knew the inevitable prophecy of his son had just arrived and im quite sure that he wasn't ready. No parent would be.

I love the voice actor's performance and the motion capture is absolutely breathtaking, I just can't believe this is actually an animated film. Compared to Advent Children that came out in 2007, they have really improved on the CGI!

The facial expressions tell so much that the 'peace' offering is nothing more but a trap.
The funny thing is, not only does this scene have more significance after beating the game, but it goes even *further* when you play through Episode Ardyn.
(Spoilers)
22 years prior to this scene, Ardyn invaded Insomnia and singlehandedly stripped back its defenses before fighting Regis AND a building-sized soldier of the Old Wall, and would have killed Regis (ending the line of Lucis before Noctis' birth) if not for an act of literal divine intervention. See how that turns out."
That's why Regis is uneasy through the conversation, because he's being strong-armed with EVERY tool at Niflheim's disposal... and Ardyn is _relishing_ that.
