    Surya apologized the next day to the audience and to the Japanese hosts at the exhibitions and got a huge ovation. I heard the federation threatened to ban her from all future events. However She seems happy and free of her freaky mother ( one of her coaches , her father was not) today and lives and coaches in The states. I thought it was Vegas.

    Surya was a powerful skater and time after time the judging panel treated her unfairly because she wasn't the typical "ice princess". I remember being a young child watching her land an illegal backflip on one foot at the 98 Olympics and thinking she was the most impressive athlete I'd ever seen. At this point she simply had enough of the unfair subjective judging of the sport. Shame on the reporters at the end, they're the ones being disgraceful.

  • @alexsdb9712

    This was the year Surya clearly did not win. Too many errors in her free skate. But the big injustice was the year before at World's 1993 when Oksana Baiul was given gold over Surya. Surya Bonaly was at a different level than Oksana that night, not just in the technical ability, but even the whole package. Oksana was good but junior-good, and there was no jump combination from her in the free skate, which is a requirement. If anything, Lu Chen was also robbed and should have been ranked above Oksana as well.

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 3 года назад +7

      They had to rob Surya of the gold in 1993 so the communist bloc judges could set Oksana up as the World Champion and "favorite" to win gold going into the Lilihammeer Olympics in 1994, so she could...once again...steal the gold from Nancy Kerrigan there, too. Like her or not, Kerrigan was robbed by another junior-style performance from Oksana in the LP that was full of two-foot landings and no jump combination until Oksana tacked on a double toe to a jump in the final seconds of her program. Kerrigan was flawless and far more sophisticated. I guess that's why many say the 1994 Olympics is where they got all the figure skating medals wrong.

    • @Kaboomboo
      @Kaboomboo 3 года назад +6

      @@L1623VP Kerrigan was not robbed in 1994. She was severely lacking in the artistic department. She was a good technical skater, but Oksana was better artistically. And Artistic merit goes above technicality.

    • @L1623VP
      @L1623VP 3 года назад +6

      @@Kaboomboo Oh, not at all. Baiul was better artistically by hopping around the rink in a pink feathery dress to a Broadway medley like a contestant in one of those child beauty pageants? Absolutely not. Kerrigan was the definition of sophistication that would preface the coming styles of Michelle Kwan and Kim Yuna. Baiul was "cutesty". She didn't give an adult performance. That LP could easily have been performed on the junior circuit.
      The truth is Ukraine was heavily involved in cheating scandals throughout the 90's. Their judges were implicated and sanctioned in the famous toe-tapping cheating scheme and the 1998 Olympic ice dance competition. At the height of their bloc judging scams, both Paul Wylie and Nancy Kerrigan were robbed of Olympic gold medals, each losing (not coincidentally) to Ukrainians. The Ukrainian Skating Federation, along with Russia and the Czech Republic were corrupt to the core through the 90's and often got "help" from Italy and France to throw competitions.

    To all those who are blaming racism for this situation... Do you realize who the winner was? A Japanese lady=Asian.... Or do you want to play at who has it worse between people of Asian and African heritage?
    One of my favourite skaters has always been Midori Ito, she was in a similar situation. Like Surya she was a great athlete but did not fit the princess mold so she constantly got lower scores. She managed to win only one gold at worlds but she always persevered. I do not remember her race ever being called on as a reason for her situation. Or are you saying that racism happens only to black people?
    And by the way: racism is in all communities no matter their color. In light of the covid situation, there is ample proof that no one is immune, no one.
