I remember outpost, one of the first games I purchased with my own money as a child. I tried so hard to get that game to work correctly on my 486 DX2 computer >_< , never could get past a few turns before it crashes. I've kept most of the games I've bought through the years but that is one I don't have the box or discs for, I gave it away to a friend with a better computer but he couldn't get it to run either :)

As they talked about in the video, he and pat don't live close to each other, it would be hard for them to do videos together for that reason Doing an interview like this is much easier, because, despite what some of you might think, they were most likely not in the same room, they were probably talking to each other over skype or something similar.

In regards to Great Giana Sisters, that one is particularly tricky because it was only on sale a very brief time.
Nintendo had it removed from the stores due to it's similarity to SMB (which was a cash cow).
Perhaps ironically decades later a sequel was made that was exclusive to the Nintendo DS (with further, multi platform sequels since).

  • @D33GS

Limited Run tried pre-orders for Skullgirls and they apparently got burned pretty badly on it if their twitter account is to be believed. They've been pretty talkative about their business model on twitter lately as well. They set a print amount with the publisher and the release agreement ends as soon as the agreed print amount is made. The rights to print more copies revert to the publisher after the run and they are allowed to print more later. If the publisher looks at the LRG release and sees the demand to print more that are within their rights to do so.
It actually has happened at least once already with Soldner X2 on the Vita in which Play-Asia printed an additional 3,000 copies. While the Limited Run release of 3,800 (?) sold out in a weekend the Play-Asia release is still available months later despite being even more limited.

How come you guys never mention the last gamer who has more games than everyone on the world's collection. Nearly double John's collection.
Is it because he is Australian.
Have you seen his setup. He is basically making another house affect to his for all his pinball and 100 arcade machines as well as 22,000. Official releases. But actually had v scout 27,000 games. He gets so many games every week he gets boxes which dwarf my entire collection. He had complete Japanese, American collections v so it's in 60 hertz. I am not sure if they even count the double complete collections of like extra 5000 games for just one collection. It is insane that he had console completes and now working on all pc completes like your love Jason.

I'm sorry but a guy can only be so lucky before it looks pretentious. He worked for a game company even though he was really only a an accountant, marries a realtor, basically his whole time at sierra was goofing off, and then has disposable income in 2010. when most of us we were feeling the recession or job loss this guy starts a RUclips channel basically to show off his basement. I'm sure if you're in his circle he's an amazing guy, but outside looking in- this guy seems manipulative.

As a 20 year old college student going game design, the total lack of knowledge for older games and especially computer stuff is mind boggling. I've been looking everywhere for help modding and upgrading my Atari 600xl, and I can't find any sources.. This information is lost or not documented, and I need help. Some memebers of the community are just assholes too. Pat, I love ya bud, but telling me to just glue my destroyed Atari 2600 labels back on when I asked if there was a place for repo labels just came off a bit snobbish. Now I get miscommunication due to tweeting rather than a face to face or email conversation, but still. I'm just a kid, well I guess young adult who wants to preserve and refurbish my deceased grandmother's Atari. Like I'm not trying to damage the collectors market with repo labelled stuff, and lets be real here Pat, SNES and N64 repo carts are saving people hundreds of dollars. I can't afford the stupid prices sellers are asking, and I just want to play some of these games on original hardware.
I'm a huge car person, I run a modest sized Instagram v8_or_die, and I try to spread the knowledge of lesser known classic cars that get lost with time. A lot like how you guys try to collect and document these libraries of old games and tech. That being said Pat, and even Jason if you're stalking these comments, reproductions are gods gift to the classic car market. Without reproduction parts, these cars would be rotting into the ground, the same can be said with the retro game market. Some things need maintaining or refurbishing. Please be open to reproduction parts and labels. That being said, full reproductions (FAKES) shouldn't be scoffed at either in the gaming world. Manufacturers in the classic car market pretty much reproduce full bodies and frames for some of the most popular classic cars. You can build a 69 Camaro SS with just reproduction parts. They serve a certain niche who want the looks and the handling, but aren't too anal about the historical value of a vehicle. While I'm huge on historical value and preservation, you guys have to accept that there are people who just don't car about history, but rather the aesthetic or "feel".
To wrap up my rant, I sort of lie in that weird spot where I'd love to preserve history, but I can't quite afford that stuff while college, so I just buy what cool stuff I'm curious about. The stuff I'm curious about, but not financially inclined to get, I'll use other means, whether that be emulation or reproductions. The museum idea is awesome though guys, although I love messing with some tech and playing with stuff. Looking at an Atari 600XL is different than touching it and messing with it. Jesus, the more I think about it, the more the classic car hobby is so much like this hobby. You could write a research paper on it.

I remember trying to play Madden 97, which required Dos to work, and would shut down Windows. However, it would then not find a mouse driver, which was needed to play. I never did get it to work... but NHL 97 worked just fine!

I finished Space Quest today. Turns out I'm much better at those games now at 42 than I was at 10. :P I learned english playing Police Quest as a kid.

pat about limited run youc ant compare it with your book youc na just print more books easy if you ened to
limited run on the other hand cant do that pre orders they tried that but so many thigns cna happen with delays etc then people cancel it etc its tons of more work for them. they tried that 1 time with skullgirls and that didnt work for them at all. also the sales of a pre order are way lower. also they do lots of releases now. sitting ons tock is money they cnat put in the next game.
you should look into certain things about them they explain what they do and why they do it the way they do it realy well:)

Limited run games are only for collectors. All the games are already digital releases, so you don't need to complain about only a certain amount of people getting them.

most of them sell for not.much more than the retail price though, because so many people do this there isnt so much demand to keep up

Currently listening to a backlog of Not so common podcast while I work. Listening to this one was fun for while I was writing code for an iOS app, Pat talks about memory leaks and Samsung. Had to laugh for I experienced that issue in a past life as an Android developer. iOS IMHO is really not much better anymore. Anyways, very fun to hear a shout out for devs :)

Heh,... don't think you realized it, but you just proved the point about people not needing to understand the inner workings anymore when you suggested things like batch files and passing arguments is a thing of the past.
It's not, it's just hidden. Switches and passing arguments to software is very common still, but defaults usually suffice.

I am ok if you give me your things, there are other people that have given me things, I will even join your party, and I think I know best. OH, BTW, did I mention I could go to your party if I was invited and you could give me things? I will even teach your friends a thing or to about video games. It's best for you.

South Beach does have legit fish tacos... but the service is so terrible i can't really get myself to go there anymore. The Brigantine is the best fish taco spot IMO, they have one in Point Loma Pat or like 5 other locations. Try the sword fish tacos and get back to me haha!! awesome show and guest, Bravo boys!

I would absolutely buy a PC Big Box book if Metal Jesus Rocks was involved. The old PC game boxes are what got me into gaming, and I know Metal Jesus has *quite* the collection..

Hey Pat, how are you distributing your free iOS apps? Is it using the free keys you get from iTunes Connect, when a new version is released? I wasn't aware that these keys did not allow users to update.
