  • Canva offers a library of amazing content to use in your designs, including photos, icons, illustrations, video, audio, fonts and templates. By using one (or more) of these in a design, you’re bound by specific agreements. What are they? And how do they apply to you? These are two of our most commonly asked questions - so… in this video we’ll attempt to answer them (and others) in the most jargon-free way.
Please be aware that the advice given in this video is general guidance. Please refer to our License Agreements page for the latest updates: www.canva.com/policies/licens...

I have been a Canva Pro user for years, and Canva is an awesome tool. After watching this video, I'm confused about EXACTLY what you can and can't do with the Pro designs. I have a very simple question: besides lots of great features, what are we, as Pro users paying for? I thought that by being a Pro user and paying a subscription, we were paying for the right to use the Pro designs - NOT AS IS, but to modify and use them. Is that not the case? I also assumed that a portion of our subscription payments was going to the creators for the right to use the designs, is that true, or not? Anytime a company's terms and conditions are confusing and have so many caveats, I don't want to deal with them because it is too complicated. I would appreciate further clarification. Thanks.

@@limitlesschannel9849 "from your understanding" that means your interpretation. He did not mention print on demand specifically. Which means it's up for people to interpret and again causes confusion.
He said you can make shirts etc as long as the designs are unique, BUT he ca also have meant that you can make them, but only print yourself at home, with your own tools and then sell it on.
As long as canva doesn't mention print on demand specifically by word, this confusion will always be there.

Thanks very much Will. And Canva Team. I was confused about the Canva licensing. So it is almost like a regular copyright licensing. Especially on products for me. And the music I did find out the hard way as I gain a copyright strike for the music on my RUclips channel. It was not bad but I just didn't place the name of the song for the short form video. It was just an example of how to make a short commercial. So it didn't affect my channel. Overall, thanks again for the clarification on licensing. I have a question though, if I use only text can it be used on digital and physical products? As some people might license their font.

I watched the video and would like a bit more detail on "using it as part of a bigger design." I would like to use a pro stock image as part of a set of playing cards. Good info! My question is regarding a template. Maybe you partially covered this in the video but here goes: I would like to use a logo template but I have changed the font and the element so that it isn't the original template but "inspired" by it. For example, say I changed a watercolor-like graphic element of a dog from the original template to a cat. Would that be a breach of trademark and make it prohibited from use on a Shopify shop? Thanks.

Follow up to the first question though (which I'm sure is probably somewhere in the comments already): do we need to stay pro to keep using a pro design or can we continue to use the pro design even when the pro sub lapses? Essentially, if we made it while we were pro, we're okay even if the design continues to be used outside of a pro sub? Thanks guys! :)

Hi! Thank you for this. I want to make sure I understand if I'm allowed to use the designs I create using the free design elements in Canva on items I want to sell using a free account. Your answer to the question, "Can I sell the designs I produce in Canva"? was basically yes if the Canva elements are altered and not used as is without revision, making the design your own. You gave an example of an altered image that was very clear with use on T-shirts and mugs. The original image was transformed using fonts and additional elements. But I was just told that using designs created on Canva for commercial use only applies to users with Pro Accounts. Not users with Free Accounts. This is not mentioned here and I can't seem to find it anywhere on the Canva site. Are there different Free account vs Pro account commercial usage rights when using free elements? Is this something new or was the Canva representative mistaken? Please provide clarity when you have a chance. Thank you in advance.

Wow Safiya, this is so awesome! And a great question. Off the top of my head I would say no, it's not allowed, because it's TV and their licensing laws often won't allow it... but then you are not advertising on TV, it's spoken word and creative and PPN... so maybe. It would be allowed on RUclips or on social. I suggest reaching out to our Support Team here: www.canva.com/help/contact-us/ - they should be able to help with your specific case. What I would like to know is whether it's fine to use lots of non-overlapping elements to create a t-shirt design. Any time you give an example of how to design, the elements always overlap. Is that the only time when it's considered unique, or world, say, 30 different elements that aren't overlapping be OK for commercial use? In other words, I create a pattern with them.

The idea, as Kimothy mentioned, is to collage multiple elements to create something fresh. It would be great to hear an answer for this one. :)

Hello! Thank you very much for this! I got a question. Im a pro canva user and Im planning to make document printables such as worksheets, flash cards, and infographics for sale. Is it still okay to use Canva's elements in my printables for this kind of business? I have made changes of the photos such as changing backgrounds and colors too. Is that okay? Hoping for your quick response. Please answer. Thanks!

Hi, I have a question related to RUclips please.
There is a specific music track and visual template (which I'll first adjust in Canva to fit my style), which I want to use as a short outro on each of my RUclips channel's videos. Meaning I'd use this template + the music track multiple times over and over (always the same design & music track) and just add it at the end of each new video, which is produced in a different software. Can I do this as a Canva Pro customer and if so, how exactly do I have to do it to not get any issues with e.g. copyright on the music track, which is a Canva Pro track.
I've seen a few vids, where people say to make sure you have a license for the music, but unfortunately I still don't know how exactly to obtain this.
Thank you very much already in advance for any helpful tips.

Good vid. Need more though. ;) Not a lot was covered on digital use and I have several questions, even though I've read through the license terms on Canva, which don't really specify much about digital content besides templates. For example, what if I want to use several graphics put-together that still some act as stand-alone in the whole, but the set together combined create something else? I know that's probably too vague but is there someone I can email or chat with so I can provide more detials? Also, what is allowed in terms of creating digital download content? The terms only list e-books and magazines, which for most of us who sell digital items, that's not the main use... What about cards, gift tags, certificates, song visuals, and so many other things?

Hey question - There is a photo of a person which is included in my canva pro subscription - can I put text over the picture and use that for my print on demand tshirts? I changed the color filter on the picture as well. Do I have to change more of the picture than that or would I have to add another graphic along with it? I'm not sure how using actual pictures fits into the equation. The picture when I go into the info about it says it's from Gettyimages

So, I want to start a small business selling things. Just to be completely sure, these are the things that I am allowed to do right?:
    - Use images from Canva on mugs/notebooks/T-shirts to sell as long as I change the color and add some text to make it more unique and personalized.
    - Use the AI generator and sell those generated images as long as I make my prompt VERY specific so that it will be original
-Mix and match several different logo designs I get inspiration from until I come up with something that looks different enough to trademark and call my own?
    - Use designs as they are for RUclips videos as long as I don't take credit for the images/videos in question.
    Did I get everything right??

Has all this changed drastically in the last year? I never printed it, however I thought when researching this about a year ago that we were allowed to use Canva Pro images for creating things like journals and book covers. I understand now that it needs to be changed into our own design completely.

I don't understand the difference between ownership and copyrights. f.e.: I use FREE elements from Canva library (that have a note " You can sell merchandise with your design on it") and AI generated graphics, edit them and mix them with my text. Do I have exclusive rights to use it and sell my products with it? If I generate a picture with 'text to image' AI feature do they appear somewhere in a open library or only on my profile?

This really depends on whether you are printing this t-shirt for yourself or to make a t-shirt empire Philip. If you are combining elements together to make something new then the short answer is always yes. Hope that helps.

That you! QUESTION: Do you have to significantly edit a free video template to share it on social (e.G RUclips, Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook), assuming you have the end intention to generate profit from that post (So, not selling the template but redistributing it with commercial intent)?

I subscribe to Canva Pro and have used canva graphic elemets to create unique masot designs to sell digitally on etsy. Even though my designs are unique and are using more that a stand alone graphic element, the original artist is reporting any listings that contain his graphic elements (panther, bulldog, etc.) I have read thru all of the licensing content and it says as long as the content isnt stand alone elements i can use it commercially. Can you clarify and explain? Thank you!

I do have a question that was slightly touched on in this video, but not quite.
-Am I allowed to download a canva song, remove the drums from it, and then record my own drums onto it, and post it onto my soundcloud for listening only? I want to showcase my skill with a specific genre of music for producers to hear, but as of right now, I have not been a part of any music projects myself in that specific genre. I'm hoping that going this possible route and adding my own drums to canva songs, I will have examples of my skill when applied to a specific genre. Is this allowed?

I used a template idea from canva and (maybe even two) then made some changes by combining with the free graphics then added my own brand colors to it. If I wanted to TM it would it be copyright infringement? I watched the part about it but it wasn’t really specific to how I created my logo since it was just the ideas I used. I did use a portion of graphics from one of them but then the rest was manipulated into my end result. I’m just getting started in my business but I had never used canva before and it turned out beautiful for a first timer. (I am still pretty proud of myself 😁) sooo I would like to keep it as my registered logo but obviously as long as I fit the criteria. Thank you in advance for answering a question you covered in the video but didn’t quite grasp. ~Cheers~
