(Before video) But isn't Ishmael aka big boss actually real? Cuz you meet you in the older games even in the end of phantom Pain they show the truth big boss has a phantom and the Venom snake the one you play as is the medic that saved big boss so how is he a hallucinating him in the hospital?

@@shadowlink14_2 Third Man Syndrome. There’s dozens of examples of where two people will be trapped in a life or death situation, and they’ll report feeling like a third person was there helping them make decisions.
Your brain will “project” an image of your expertise outside of itself to guide you in extreme stress, essentially.
Venom is in the exact situation where he would create a Third Man. “Someone” external to help him remember what to do.
It’s also important to note, this can happen with 1 person or groups of people. Ishmael was always just a projection of Venom’s own psyche helping him.
And, to be clear, I don’t mean he made a ghost who actually did shit, like Psycho Mantis at the end of 4 or something. I mean he hallucinated Ishmael throwing the silencer he, Venom, actually threw. Because the stress of the situation was too much for his barely conscious recently comatose brain to handle and it needed an external locus of control in that moment to survive.

Lol yeah and I doubt Kojima himself even truly knows what’s going on. A lot of the story across these games, and even within individual games, doesn’t really make sense and has quite a lot of gaps. Way back when I first played MGS 1 on PS1, it became my favourite game. After that I bought a PS2 just to play metal gear. And same for PS3. I never got a PS4 but got a pc instead and MGS 5 came out on pc too so there was no need to buy a PS4. I wonder if we will ever get an MGS 6.

Seriously, Kojima has to be proud of his series. Despite getting tired of making the games, and trying to end the series since mgs2, he kept giving us quality with deep philosophy. I know it wasn't him alone, but I think the rest of his team understands that Kojima is our Cypher. And as we know Cypher is not one man, but an idea, a meme.

24:56 If you notice, the red blood spewing from the wound is grey. When Venom Snake hallucinates or injures his head, he cannot see the color red. This is further evidence that he is hallucinating during this scene. Not sure about the rest of the stuff in the scene, but it seemed odd the blood was grey. Maybe it was just the lighting?
I've also noticed that. It happens during the unfinished Eli cutscene as well, from what I remember (Episode 51).
this plays into ep 51,,, i think it has something to do with misintrupting facts,, and how that effected liquid maybe..he saw himself incorrectly or idk
If you fall from a high enough height, the impact will cause Venom to perceive red as grayish white. I noticed this while on Mother Base around where all the material containers are; the combustible containers's red logo and lines were completrly shifted to grey

In MGS1, once Meryl becomes possesed, First Person View (Snakes Perspective) is replaced by what Mantis is seeing. So what if the Venom/Big Boss and Tretij relation in the hospital is some kind of throwback idea to that moment?
Very well made. I am borderline obsessed with mgsV and ground zeroes. I watch countless hours of videos like this one, but this video is the first time I've seen this theory put together so cleanly with such compelling evidence. This is more call-out and less theory, job well done sir.

I'd like to note another similar character situation: Viktor Reznov. While his false existence is fully explained, I think Ishmael works in the same way (just replace hypnotism with a piece of metal touching Venom's brain). They're clever plot devices that add character and background without being boring. While Reznov was a bit more involved in the story, Ishmael is sort of just a tutorial character that adds room for speculation.

But seriously V almost seems like it’s designed to make us crazy. I know people don’t agree with Venom and Big Boss being extended versions of the same character but if Big Boss was whole why the rumors about him being a cyborg in MG2 and being rebuilt in 4. Also why does Big Boss wonder if Zero hated or fear him if Zero wanted him to live. I’m curious if this taking place in Big Boss’ or Venom’s mind can other characters be an extension on what is going through the mind. It’s also hard to believe Kojima would forget about Big Boss’ fighting style and the time stamps in the ending. Ever MGS game lies to you but only V never comes clean or does it? Ultimately it’s up to the players to come together with their own “truth.”
It's very possible that part are Venom is yin to the yang of big boss, his battle torn mind is a unreliable narrator making sense of his coma, The duality of what it means to be a hero in a war in capitalist economy that feeds into itself. Leaving Venom as possibly the compartmentalized part of his psyche that he scapegoats. I don't know, I thought the way the game was done is amazing.

But we are the player, we are Venom Snake. The body double for our hero, Big Boss. So we have our own truth each to his own.
Also, that might explain why old Big Boss is much quicker and stronger than snake in MGS 4.

Amazing work. For me the dead give away, is when Venom had to shoot both, he is right and left, unnecessary statement to say, clearly a hint from kojima.
i always wondered why quiet never finished ishmael off after "throwing" the knife into him. she straight went to venom to choke him out. as if ishmael wasnt even in the room, she completly igonred him in that moment, even though he still could defeat her. and also a bit later his right shoulder had no blood from the thrwoing knife. this all seemed fishy to me
If I may add to this excellent theory:
A) How would big boss find and identify digoxin in a hospital ward so quickly?
B) How would he know exactly what digoxin is used for?
C) How would he know how long it takes for digoxin to kick in?
All immediately after a 9 year coma?
On the other hand, the subconscious of Venom would have had all of his previous knowledge as a medic!
Also! Both times that Venom gets a dislocated limb, Ishmael fixes it for him. After the prologue, when you get these exact same dislocations Venom snake uses the exact same technique as Ishmael to fix it. Almost as if they share the same medical knowledge ;)

Digoxin actually does the opposite of what Ishmael says it does. I'm guessing if Ishmael is real, he used it to further coax Venom/BB into submission to accept truths later told by Ocelot on the whaling ship? Perhaps that was his involvement in a grand mission of some sort.
So lowkey, Mantis was the bodyguard [unknowingly] send out to help Venom.

Please read:
I believe Ishmael is really in the hospital, but you (the player) are controlling his new phantom. You are playing as the subconscious part of his brain that is awakening. Basically, venom took all the time it did to escape the hospital to fully awaken, and when that was over Ishmaels face (the physical form of the player) was unrecognizable to himself and truely believed he was Big boss.
If you notice, ishmael only used POS tactics to get out while the controllable character was truly the only one not armed during the first escape. After the crash, the two psyches meshed together to form the whole awakening of Venom snake.
Breif: you the player are controlling the birth of the venom persona, and you need to keep up with Ishmael (*the physical medic*) in order fully invade the poor medics mind that they decided to use as a body double. All by zero to protect the real BB.

A lot of people hated MGS5. Others loved it.
My personal opinion is that MGSV is one of the best games in history. Five years later and still we face new theories, secrets and easter eggs. Only huge games like GTA, The Witcher and the Metal Gear Saga can do that. And Kojima is the master when it comes to a game's legacy.
After watching this video and the "I'll take the right. You take the left" part, my first thought was to the MGS1 fight . Switching controller ports from left to right in order to beat mantis.
Just one thing...in the hospital, Quiet says "the patient in the next bed saw my face." She was there for Snake, so she couldn't be referring to him. Though I guess there could have been another patient in there, just not "Ishmael."

I would also like to add a few things if they haven't been pointed out before:
- If Ishmael were really there and if he was the real Big Boss, why didn't he pick up the gun the doctor dropped in that room on the way out? The only gun "he" picked up was a completely identical gun to the one you picked up.
- If Miller was constantly talking about "Revenge" why wouldn't have Mantis picked up on that emotion? Because Miller was working with Cypher the whole time and playing his role, he never felt those emotions, Eli, Venom, Volgin and Skull Face were all fighting for control, but nobody else effected Mantis, not even Miller.
- The cassette player next to your bed in the hospital was used to implant alot of those memories you heard on cassette from Ground Zero and TPP, sort of like how the cassettes were used to effect the parasites, which would also be the catalyst for the nanomachines later on and how they were used to control those they were implanted with.

Wait a minute, I've never understood Mantis's involvement with MGSV (like I never understood why he showed up when he did and why he 'assumed' certain people by wearing pieces of their clothing), but he only shows up when there are heavy feelings of revenge, is that right? If so that now makes a whole lot more sense to me.
There is a group of French youtubers, all the way since late 2015 early 2016, that came to very similar conclusions about the “truth” of MGSV, analyzing philosophical references inside the game, saying that what is presented to us is certainly not the truth.
Recently one of them, using his knowledge in philosophy and literature, stated that nothing said or seen in this game can be trusted. Especially when you consider that this game might only be a memory of Snake just before operation Intruder N313. (The scene we see when we lauch TPP for the first time)
Those guys got hours and hours of one of the most interesting content about MGSV on internet, it’s too bad they barely translated anything in English in their work, I’m sure you and your audience would have loved their videos.

The 3x I've played this mission it always felt like a dream sequence. This breakdown proves kojima put the work in on writing a mulit layered story.

I didn't get it. So Ishmael is only visible to Venom, he exists only in his imagination. Quiet got owned by random items flying at her through telekinesis, self-combusting in the end. Okay. Ishmael didn't bleed after Quiet's knife throw. Yes.

It would fall in line with everything else he said in the video. Quiet was never aiming at Ishmael.. She was aiming for Venom. Venoms mind and/or mantis manifested Ishmael. Venom may have been the one who was actually throwing objects at Quiet. Keep in mind that when Ishmael was stabbed there was no wound or blood. Dont you think thats odd?
Nothing that you're seeing is real, that's the theory. It makes sense when you consider that when venoms horn was hit during the ambulance chase ishmael falls unconscious immediately. it'd be pretty weird if ishmael was knock out by bullets wouldn't it? This is the puzzle I've also been trying to solve. There's just a few instances where Ishmael does things that only a real other person could do. Like drive the ambulance. Plus ocelot saying he came to rescue you, and the man himself(big boss)
So, throwing inanimate objects and lighting matter on fire with telekinesis is possible but telekinetically driving is out of the picture? I can't get behind that idea...

Moments ago The Third Boy pilots a wrecked helicopter and uses it to decimate a squad of soldiers, then suddenly running over the man on fire with an ambulance is somehow out of the question? The entire game features men torturing each other then faltering right when it’s time to “from hell’s heart I stab at thee”- in other words “pull the trigger”. Skull Face has dozens of chances to end the rivalry betwixt him and Big Boss and never does. Venom lets Huey go despite the whole of Mother Base going under, erasing a game’s worth of progress. This is after he has to deal with the events of “Shining Lights, Even In Death”. He doesn’t even kill Skull Face. It makes sense. You convince yourself you’ll tear the place apart when you finally get fired, you’ll punch that bully in the mouth when you get the chance, you’ll tell the family how dad really was at the funeral, but you find yourself hesitating at the last second, smiling and keeping the peace like always. Even the man on fire doesn’t take his revenge after 20 years of waiting.
It’s like my old Buddhist teacher used to say, “it feels good to hate”. It’s actually difficult to find nuance, to not let yourself hate, and to realize the person you despise has a lot more in common with you than you’d like to admit.

Also the sheer fact that he introduces himself by saying "Call me Ishmael" after the doctor says that Venom is checked in under the name Ahab.
Captain Ahab is the main character of Moby Dick and his first line of dialogue is "Call me Ishmael".
As soon as I heard that line delivered in Kiefer Sutherland's voice I felt like it was pretty clear that Ishmael is your subconscious trying to protect you.
I think more evidence to be piled on here is the fact we're dealing with the King of small game details: Hideo Kojima himself
Any other director, I would brush a lot of these off due to the studio being rushed. But Hideo Kojima not putting in the smallest details in *one of the first cutscenes*?
The absence of small details only means one thing in Kojima's case: they're on purpose to prove this exact theory
This is crazy! But I noticed many of these little details too, especially Ishmael. The eye, the knife to the shoulder without a wound, the pee getting Venom discovered rather than Ishmael.
It would make sense that Ishmael is a projection of himself, to deflect his betreyal of The Boss's wish. It's why all of the mentions of Boss is met with apathy. He created another person to live through (our avatar) so he didn't have to deal with his knowledge of Boss "putting down her gun" in Peace Walker. She betrayed all that he stood when he found out that she did that, and Big Boss became a lie. He was never her succsessor, and was incapable of ever being anything other than a solider. Putting down her gun meant she was more than herself, and he never understood that until he died at her gravesite.

It's not about what MGSV could have been. The game was deliberately constructed to leave more questions than answers when looked into. It doesn't matter that it's not baked into the actual plot, it's more like a puzzle. We have a game with a story laid out to us with enough discrepencies to generate theories like this to try and solve the puzzle. It's really neat actually.
The scene where ishmael throws rubbing alchohol and a lighter to put quiet on fire was an obvious nod to big boss' defeat at the end of mgs2-solid snake

I never knew this theory existed, but now I'm 100% set on it being true. There's so much evidence to support it.
Considering Kojima is known for his attention to detail, this theory is very likely. He would never let that lack of injury or blood happen, after Ishmael got stabbed, if it didn't mean anything. I believe if Kojima was allowed to finish the game properly, there would be a replay mission where Venom Snake was on his own to leave the hospital.

what I'm still confused about is what did Venom actually look like after the surgery???
Is his Big Boss resemblance an illusion from the re-programming/brainwashing or does the surgeon actually make him look like Big Boss???
I ask because at the start of the game you create his appearance but once the surgery is over he looks nothing like the character created.
Then at the end in the mirror scene he sees the character created at the hospital intro, so is the Big Boss resemblance throughout the game also an illusion??

Ishmael was 100% never in the hospital.
Concerning the fact that Ishmael doesn't help Venom : I think it is confirmed by the fact that at 27:27 we clearly see a wheelchair next to Venom while he is crawling. It would have made sense for Ishmael to put Venom on it, especially since they have to run for their lives. I remember thinking "why does he not use the wheelchair?".
I think the wheelchair is here to prove that Ishmael can't interact with objects, meaning he is not here.
Ishmael could be only a vision, brought on by Medic as a coping mechanism by his subconscious to make sense of the Big Boss tactics he was brainwashed with. Without reference of what to do in a situation, the false memories literally manifest as a guardian angel. I dont believe Medic would be able to get out of that situation without the big boss memories. The shrapnel in his brain most likely has something to do with it. Its a saying that we can not create a new face in our dreams, that faces are always of someone we've seen before. It makes sense that Ishmaels face is covered up then. Think about it. If medic believes he IS big boss, why would he see himself guiding him.
