Think of it as your experience instead of official canon, Ala Mass Effect. If you explored the variations of Meryls game state then Hideo isn’t going to argue with how you experienced his game. … but later on in MGS4 Otacon and Meryl are both alive so a series canon does exist. I reason Hideo’s intent is not to seek to control player interaction, interpretation or sway the player to his way of thinking. He strikes me as a man who wants to know other peoples experiences so he can experience aspects of the series he created he wasn’t aware existed until the player experienced the game and applied their mind to the gameplay and narrative… Or in other words, 100 people can have the same experience and have 100 subjective interpretations. Ok so very neat thing! (At least in my eyes) Most of the lore from the MGS guidebook is completely outdated, but a part of Mantis's extra lore got worked back in by Phantom Pain: The "fact" his powers are parasitic.* This parasitic nature might help explain why Mantis is so much weaker in his MGS appearance. Basically, guidebook lore stated that personalities he parasitized stacked onto each other and came out while he's parasiting someone else. So he literally is "like the men he met as a child" during his time with Foxhound. But since he compartmentalized his parasitic nature as it's own personality after he killed his father**, while back with Eli it takes over again. The guidebook describes that the two personalities joined Foxhound for competing reasons- "the parasite" wanted to kill, while Mantis himself only wanted his own death. This odd bit of old lore might be the key to explaining why he's so much weaker during MGS- he's trying to hold back so Snake can kill him, because he doesn't just want peace from everyone else's mind- he wants peace from his own. *The guidebook posited this as the reason for the "Mantis" name, but as Mantids aren't parasitic I've got to doubt that. But the parasite label already isn't correct (it would be more accurately described as mutualism, given that while he feeds off a person they gain access to his powers- but that's pedantic.) **Given when this split happened, it could be inferred that the fire that consumed him and his village wasn't just a fearful psychic blast- again, while parasited his powers belong to whoever is the stronger willed, potentially meaning the blast damaged himself as well as killing his village because his powers were contested between himself and his father's will.
The first time I played the Mantis fight his channel change actually worked on me- I panicked from the load noise, accidentally pulling the box out of the TV plug. I didn't know what happened so I manually changed the channel, thinking that's what happened. Whoops.
You’re a cautious man, and quite skilled. You don’t save much. Still don’t believe me? I’ll read further into your mind: You seem to enjoy role playing games. I see you like action games. You’ve played a couple Konami games. ...You like Castlevania don’t you?
Still remember when he read my mind and moved my controller, i was young at the time and was scared completely shitless how this guy KNEW i played castlevania.
I think the part about “both endings of MGS1 being cannon” needs to be re-evaluated. If you escape from Shadow Moses with Otacon, it’s because Meryl is dead. There’s no plot hole, that’s just how it is. You can’t “but they both escaped” from that. She’s a hashtag. #ripMeryl When you escape with Meryl, Otacon will tell you he’s planning to stay behind, growing a pair and saying even when the bombs fall he’ll do whatever he can to help you escape. But the bombs never come. The pentagon want the Metal Gear Data. If you didn’t skip the last codec call you’ll hear that the Chief of Staff was removed from his post and the air strike was called off- making Otacon’s “noble self sacrifice” just a bit of a wet firework. But… he lives. Meryl and Otacon both live. Snake and Meryl have to escape on the Snowmobile, but it’s likely that the pentagon send in a crew to acquire what they can from this Op. which includes Dr. Emmerich as HES much more of a valuable asset- given he built Rex and they want him alive cos there’s no M.O disk In the Meryl ending- Otacon still lives, and probably gets an armed escort back to civilization. In the Otacon ending- she gets her own special Game Over screen with “no continues, my friend” and can’t appear in MGS4. Saying “both endings are canon” makes the timeline a nightmare when there’s literally a much easier solution, even though people assumed (because Otacon was in MGS2 and Meryl wasn’t) that the Otacon ending was canon and still cling to that- thinking MGS4 Retconned her death. But if the Meryl ending is the Canon ending nothing changes except that Snake has to get Otacon out of the Pentagon to set up Philanthropy. That’s all.
interesting fact: you can beat mantis without switching controller ports. i've tried it once just to see if i could and the key is to punch him, instead of shooting him with guns, if you just keep dodging his attacks, which isn't that difficult, you can walk up to him and just punch him, which is still not an optimal strategy as he will dodge at least two hits of the three hit combo snake does when he isn't armed, but you will usually get one hit in, which will eventually wear him down, the infrared goggles make this particularly easy to pull off. this is actually a huge oversight in the game because mantis will still ask why he couldn't read you mind after you win, when he did read your mind throughout the entire fight. in a later instalment i'm quite sure this possibility would have been considered, so if anyone can confirm whether or not this is possible in the twin snakes and whether or not it is recognized in mentis' dialogue, please reply.
It's honestly pretty easy to overlook Mantis' actual personality and character. Like, yes, he set precedents for 4th-wall-breaking and connecting video game software into the game's universe itself (which Flowey and Monika both ran with). But that also ignores Mantis himself as a compelling character too - even without his added backstory from MGSV, it's painfully easy to see why he views humanity as beneath him with so much contempt, given that he experienced things like a loving family and people's friendship rather than his father's hatred and people's depravity. Whether you go with the "it feels... kind of... nostalgic" or "it feels.. kind of... nice" translation, it's clear that Psycho Mantis was not born a monster, but rather molded into one by his toxic surroundings. Ironically, the psychic known for being a puppetmaster was, himself, influenced and shaped by others more than he would ever want to admit.
Me and my dad were never, ever so stumped in a boss fight. It's something I'll never forget, me and my old man sitting there. I'm about 10 it's really the first real videogame that we've played other than maybe some of the tomb raider games and we were so freaked out and confused. We didn't know if the PlayStation was broken or what the fuck was going on. Truly a revolutionary moment in gaming and I'd bet there's quite a few father/sons that got there minds blown from this pre internet gaming experience.
How can you say both endings are cannon? I believe Meryl essentially dies in one and survives in the other. Magical off screen survival and quantum weirdness??

This odd bit of old lore might be the key to explaining why he's so much weaker during MGS- he's trying to hold back so Snake can kill him, because he doesn't just want peace from everyone else's mind- he wants peace from his own.
*The guidebook posited this as the reason for the "Mantis" name, but as Mantids aren't parasitic I've got to doubt that. But the parasite label already isn't correct (it would be more accurately described as mutualism, given that while he feeds off a person they gain access to his powers- but that's pedantic.)
**Given when this split happened, it could be inferred that the fire that consumed him and his village wasn't just a fearful psychic blast- again, while parasited his powers belong to whoever is the stronger willed, potentially meaning the blast damaged himself as well as killing his village because his powers were contested between himself and his father's will.
The first time I played the Mantis fight his channel change actually worked on me- I panicked from the load noise, accidentally pulling the box out of the TV plug. I didn't know what happened so I manually changed the channel, thinking that's what happened. Whoops.
Thanks monika! Have a good day too!
Him reading out my hands felt like the original dox
As crazy as it was when psycho mantis read my mind, Eternal Darkness got me better with “Please insert disk 2”
"You like meeeen!"
"You can see into my mind?!"
"No."
"Fuck."
so much information at once i gotta rewatch and really understand im too drunk for this right now but its amazing thank you
I’ll never forget how Phycho Mantis told me to put my controller on the floor and then moved it with the vibrator.
Big boss was so angry he caused another guy to explode
Will ya do the sorrow? That dudes a mystery to me.
I think he's a mystery to everyone. He's a medium who turns into a straight-up ghost.
I don't he realized the url he put in at 7:19 is effectively useless due to the font
One of the most unforgettable boss fights I’ve ever faced
You’re a cautious man, and quite skilled. You don’t save much.
Still don’t believe me? I’ll read further into your mind:
You seem to enjoy role playing games.
I see you like action games.
You’ve played a couple Konami games.
...You like Castlevania don’t you?
Mantis will always be one of my favorite characters.
The third child being psycho mantis never crossed my mind while I played V, but it makes so much sense now having learned that
"A bit sad" he fuckin got ANGY
Imagine if metal gear solid releases on steam and psyco mantis says "i see you like to play among us"
Oh boi! Another mgs vid!
The alliteration in the intro is inspiring.
Dude I just finished doki doki like a week ago. I had to rewatch the video to make sure I wasn’t crazy.
Hey, if you didn't catch it I did so you don't have to.

Still remember when he read my mind and moved my controller, i was young at the time and was scared completely shitless how this guy KNEW i played castlevania.
7:20 Not sure where this one is linking, I keep getting 'video unavailable'
It's BYBBOtyuNgU
@@pikraft84 why is there a link to a Rance video?
The fact that mantis was silence in 5
Damn
I think the part about “both endings of MGS1 being cannon” needs to be re-evaluated.
If you escape from Shadow Moses with Otacon, it’s because Meryl is dead. There’s no plot hole, that’s just how it is. You can’t “but they both escaped” from that.
She’s a hashtag.
#ripMeryl
When you escape with Meryl, Otacon will tell you he’s planning to stay behind, growing a pair and saying even when the bombs fall he’ll do whatever he can to help you escape.
Emmerich as HES much more of a valuable asset- given he built Rex and they want him alive cos there’s no M.O disk
In the Meryl ending- Otacon still lives, and probably gets an armed escort back to civilization.
That’s all.
I clicked my screen you check the time and I saw a big pause icon pop up. Nice
that surprise appearance of Dough Walker really caught me off guard
Psychomantis also appeared in Resident Evil: Revelations. lol
Entirely unrelated, but it's cool that there's a youtube channel that talks about my 3 favourite things -- JoJo, Castlevania, and Metal Gear.
Thank God he can't search through your search history.
Kaoru was the 5th child though. The 3rd child was shinji.
Psycho Mantis?
Meti?
You’re that bad guy…
You like to play Castlevania, don't you?
This is one of the coolest metal gear videos I’ve seen in a looong time just one question:
Why do you say Cyprus like that
Really this is the best boss fight in the series!
I think we all have a bit of Psycho Mantis in us. I felt bad for him in his defeat.
I feel like mantis could have been he world's greatest million dollar magician
I have a 3rd party ps3 controller, so when I played mgs4 the Psycho Mantis part confused me
Wait wasn't the Third Child in NGE Shinji?
Everyone knows that the most successful execution of trying to scare the audience that Hideo has ever done was to show Olgas' armpits
Urraaag!
interesting fact: you can beat mantis without switching controller ports.
i've tried it once just to see if i could and the key is to punch him, instead of shooting him with guns, if you just keep dodging his attacks, which isn't that difficult, you can walk up to him and just punch him, which is still not an optimal strategy as he will dodge at least two hits of the three hit combo snake does when he isn't armed, but you will usually get one hit in, which will eventually wear him down, the infrared goggles make this particularly easy to pull off.
this is actually a huge oversight in the game because mantis will still ask why he couldn't read you mind after you win, when he did read your mind throughout the entire fight.
in a later instalment i'm quite sure this possibility would have been considered, so if anyone can confirm whether or not this is possible in the twin snakes and whether or not it is recognized in mentis' dialogue, please reply.
Where can I find the second player port on the IPhone?
You don't.
The way to beat him without switching the controller is to take out the statues with the bandages wrapped around them.
@@KahosSaint you’re pretty good 👉👉

"Snake. Snake, you're so fine you blow my mind."
"No more massages for you then"
I know the reference to that 😂
How can you say both endings are cannon? I believe Meryl essentially dies in one and survives in the other.
Magical off screen survival and quantum weirdness??
