  • Today on our collaborative‪@NetflixSports‬ series “Take Two," we explore the true meaning of Christmas movies: • What's the True Meanin... . Watch it now on the Netflix Film Club RUclips channel! | The history of "shipping," the act of rooting for a romantic relationship between two fictional characters, has been around for ages, yet the phenomenon got its name from The X-Files. Fans of the science-fiction series who pined for Agent Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Agent Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) didn't always see their relationship develop on screen, so a vocal subset of viewers kept it alive online. The X-Files thus became ground zero for the explosion of shipping as a common, if controversial part of fandom, for everything from sitcoms to Star Wars. Here’s our Take on the evolution of shipping, from The X-Files to The Rise of Skywalker, the reasoning behind it, and the effects that rooting for love can have on the things we love.

      I agree, and would expand that to all fictional relationships, and how they are written or portrayed. It wasn't so many years ago that actress Anna Gunn was getting death threats over her character, Skyler White on 'Breaking Bad'. Stop thats it perfectly. I get so ingrosed in fiction, when im watching something and I like it my body will react to what im seeing on screen as if its actually happening to me. So when I ship two characters I am in agony watching it when its not happening 😂😂 though even though I'm like that I'd never attack or go after actors/people who ship differently/ the show. That's something I'll never understand.

    • @byMidnyt
      @byMidnyt 3 года назад +17

      @@Mattodiablo3 I agree. I can't understand getting so into it that you attack others. But I do think, when there is genuine chemistry, there is a physiological reaction. I've gotten the same type of "butterflies in my stomach" feeling watching two actors kiss as I get when remembering some of my own kisses from the past. I think the quest for that feeling is what drives much of shipping, or did in its early days. David and Gillian are just pure magic on screen together. That kind of chemistry is rare however and cannot be forced, so I'm not sure much of modern shipping actually has anything to do with that. I do think a lot has to do with the charisma of certain actors, and being invested in that actor's character's wants and needs plays a large part.

      I mostly agree, but I found it a bit of a shame where The X Files was concerned, because it was so nice to see a close friendship between a man and a woman being represented on the screen. You see men and women being romantically involved on the screen all the time, but how often do you see representations of close friendship between a man and a woman? I feel like the romance in The X Files was put there to please fans, and in doing so one of these rare on-screen representations of man-woman best friendship got overwritten!
      In general, though, I agree that shipping is harmless speculation, and people are free to enjoy their favourite shows and movies however they like :) And shippers aren't to 'blame' for The X Files romance; ultimately, that choice was still up to the producers of the show. Plus I'm sure many people would have been happy to see it become a romance. I just think there's already so much romance out there, it was really refreshing to see a man and woman be best friends without getting romantic.

      Being a skeptic isn't supposed to be about being a non-believer it's about wanting proof. I think for the most part she did an okay job of "well yeah that other thing was real doesn't mean this thing is"
      But there are too many characters written in the Scully vain who see "impossible things" who still deny it in spite of having seen the impossible thing themselves.

      I also think it makes people see romantic relationships as that perfect relationship where that person has to fulfil ALL your desires, but in reality we need a whole circle of friends because we have such varied interests and no one person will fit us perfectly.

      I do want to give my perspective as a shipper though. For me there are very few things I would genuinely ship in a "Oh god they need they're in love to kiss" way. Everything else is just about fun.
      The basis of shipping for me is fanfiction. Its about getting an intresting, fun, story out of a relationship between two people. You want to explore certain tropes or certain situations. Canon, actual, pairings often limit what fanfiction can be so you take non-canon (friendship) pairs.
      But like it's not that those two people have to be in love to make me happy or that their friendship in the show or other fanfics are less valuable. Its all just content for these two people that I belive could or do get along amazing and gell together in a way I enjoy.

    It bothers me in some instances that platonic relationships between fictional characters always have to lead to physical intimacy and love in the eyes of their most ardent fans. As it is in reality, you can have close, kindred relationships with others you have no intention of ever sleeping with. This assertion that men and women cannot have relationships with the opposite sex without there being some form of sexual tension between them, or indeed two same-sex friends without a love interest being there, is hurtful to the dynamic between two partners who could love each other without desiring an intimate romantic relationship.
    In the example of Scully and Mulder, they could have had the same connection and dialogue without the sexual tension or allusion to a blossoming romance. They could have even had romantic partners outside of the show's lens, with very little need to explain or defend the way they interact with one another, because it doesn't have much to do with the direction of the show. You don't see them doing it with every TV series, but it happens enough where the "will they wont they" seems to be driving the show's narrative, and when they eventually do wind up dating or marrying or having sex, that gratification for the show's fans is pretty short-lived. I saw that happen with New Girl, Parks and Rec, Community, The Office, even kids shows like Avatar the Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, or Star vs The Forces of Evil. Platonic relationships are not deemed fulfilling enough to their audiences, or they overlook the glaring incompatibilities between the characters and still try to shoehorn them together anyway.
    For someone like myself who enjoys friendships with the opposite sex, I'm tired of the trope that all platonic relationships have the ultimate destination of a romantic relationship, when they don't. It makes me feel like it's some sort of taboo to have these friendships, and that if either of us is in a committed relationship with another partner, that it's somehow an emotional sabotage on the relationship, or that you're suspected of cheating with this friendship. I don't need shows to reflect my own relationships in order to be entertained, but it would be nice to occasionally see things like buddy comedies and dramas where two characters can remain in a committed relationship, while still being secure enough in themselves to have a loving friendship with someone and not be pushed into some empty love triangle with them.

      Your comment really spoke to me!
      I think fiction and reality always feed off themselves. Fiction prioritizes romance because we in our society prioritize it (aka the expectation that you need to have kissed, dated, had sex, got married at a certain age or else youre a loser). But at the same time, I feel like friendships between men and women are often made taboo irl bc fiction doesnt normalize it. A lot of our behaviors we copy from what we grow up seeing and I truly think that the conventional storyline that two opposite gender friends will eventually fall in love is what causes a lot of estigma of close friendships irl

    I totally agree shippers shouldn't demand things of creators. And they CERTAINLY shouldn't attack actors BUT showrunners also shouldn't tease and hint at a certain ship over and over if they have no intention of following through. Especially if it's a gay ship.
    Johnlock shippers get a lot of flack but some of it is really undeserved because you can't tell me that there's not enough subtext AND straight up text to justify the idea that they'd eventually get together. That said, it disgusted me when they attacked Amanda. John was bound to marry Mary, it was in the books. However I do think they made her character utterly unlikable. Like make her a sweet wife or a manipulating villain. You can't have it both ways. Like yeah she's a lying murderous psychopath, but don't you just love her? Uh no.
    But none of what happened was the actors fault. Leave them out of it. And yes some fans went overboard. But I think most long term fans can agree Moffat & Gatiss are *enter rude word here*. Even without considering Johnlock the last season was a garbage fire. Fans were right to be upset. If I'd obsessed over it to end up getting that I'd prob go crazy too. I was upset enough as a very casual fan.
    And don't get me started on SPN. I watched the 1st 5 seasons and that was enough for me to know it was just baiting and it'd pump out subpar quality seasons as long as ppl were watching. Unfortunate cause I thought Jensen could've had a real acting career. Oh well.

  • @mkitten13
    @mkitten13 3 года назад +19

    To be fair, fan entitlement has been going through the roof in all aspects of fandom, not just with the shippers. It's part of the effect the rise of social media has had on us. We've gone from fanzines (before my time) you had to physically share, to fansites, to social media groups. Fanfiction has gone from this niche thing to having dedicated large archives that even my older siblings (who used to belittle my fan activities two decades ago) not only know of, but are even using. Fan conventions that used to be just fan meet-ups with maybe a guest or two from the fandom, are now big business, and the entitlement there in guest requests are downright insane. It's the direct access, the immediate feedback.
    In regards to shipping itself, for me it's about what I feel. I don't relate to the analysis that it's down to us seeing ourselves in the ship, because honestly there is just so much variety within the various characters I ship. For me personally it's down to chemistry, if I feel it. I fall in love with the bond I see between two characters. Sometimes it's a canon romance, other times it's not, sometimes it's a straight ship, other times it's a gay ship. Some fandoms I don't even have a ship in.
    I also think creators are at times stifled by their fear of the "Moonlighter curse", they will either hold a developing romance back to keep the tension, or they will deliberately sabotage it to keep the tension after the characters get together. Like having a constant love triangle going, or an on-again-off-again thing. It's like they don't trust themselves to make a good story without resorting to these clichés. A show doesn't necessarily die just because the will-they-won't-they got together, if it dies it usually does because the creators didn't trust themselves to follow through with a good story.

    The important thing is to ship and let ship. Enjoy it, stay in your lane, do not ask anyone to "explain why you ship" because you're not entitled to anyone's time or explanation, and absolutely DO NOT harass other people for not agreeing with you. You can vent about a ship you dislike all you want in your own bubble, just don't tag that nonsense for the intention of upsetting other people. They're not gonna suddenly change their mind because you don't like it.
    I lost count the amount of times I have been on the end of vitriol hate because I shipped, quote, "problematic ships". Even if I did, it's fiction. It's not a reflection of my character and it's certainly not your business.
    The best thing to do is to not get too involved in fandoms, just find your circle of fellow shippers and keep out of arguments. If someone tries to stir up shit whether @ you or in the pro-tag, block them. Do not engage. Take it from me, the older you get, the less you give a shit about juvenile ship wars. None of it matters, this is all meant to be just for fun.

And they should not have to be harassed, shamed, or told that it's wrong to ship those ships.
      HOWEVER, at the same time, other people have every right to be disgusted by those same problematic/taboo ships and be able to say so and criticize said ship (as long as they are not attacking the shipper(s)). i think shipping is fun. it's what brings part of a fandom together and personally i made a lot of good of friends because of it. but sometimes the people take it too far. shipping irl people, harassing actors and threatening people involved in the creation of a show it's the most cringe thing lmao, but i guess that has more to do with the fanatism in some individuals than shipping in general.

      Another jelsa fan. I ship it too. But I'm more of a passionate yet chill kind of fan.

    I love Reylo! It’s cool if others don’t. It’s not for everyone, and that’s ok 💖

    "Get a life, nerds!"
    Although it wasn't directed at shippers, I can't help but sympathize with Mark Hamill's very succinct take down of unreasonable fans. Beyond potentially poor writing or acting - which can be legitimate reasons for disappointment - what does it say about the fans themselves when they're so invested in their own visions that they become hostile when the creators of their beloved franchises don't conform to their expectations?
