- The Marshall MG 100 HDXF is a solid state amplifier that came out in the late 90's and was not very popular and is not to this day. I want to show you, that you can actually use it cuz it sounds great, if you know how to dial it in.
I'm using different guitars but the amp settings remain the same during this video.
I'm playing through a Harley Benton 1x12 vintage 30 celestion cabinet.

These amps are massively underrated. The biggest problem they had on release was the speaker cabinets that came with them, the standard MG speakers installed in them were poor, but play through a good cabinet and these amps sound great. There is a huge range of different tones available. I have a 100 HDFX head, paired with a MG speaker cabinet that has had the MG speakers swapped out for vintage Celestion G12T-75's and this combination sounds huge. Although I've owned a lot of amps over the years and still have 2 tube amps and 3 solid state ones, it's the MG 100HDFX that gets the most use.
Thank you for your comment. I agree! This amp is actually my first "real" guitar amplifier and still gets used on a regular basis. Plugging it into the right cabinet was a real game changer. Your speaker combination sounds pretty awesome! 🤘🏻
Same issues with a lot of the Crate amps and other solid state amps of the era. The speakers and cabs held them back. You can occasionally hunt down a 1960 cab with g12t75s for300-400 bucks and also some Crate Blue Voodoo and Ampeg cabs also with Celestions as well. It's also a cool amp to run with preamp pedals into the FX return or distortion pedals into the clean channel if the gain channel isn't your vibe
I run my MG100HDFX through an ivory EVH 5150 III 2x12 cab. Yes good speakers make a huge difference!
the amp is the best solid state amp Marshall ever made. GREAT AMp
I agree 👍 💯
I swear by these heads. I run an eq with mine to calm some of the shrill. Perfect with the eq.
These heads are so underrated its actually ridiculous. It goes from Plexi to JCM 800 to scooped metal. I think those that bash it never played one. It sounds better the the Katana head and most modelers. Its all in the Contour dial.
I couldn't agree more 🤝🏻
I had a valvestate head. The mg eq seems way more sensitive. Allowing for more tone possibilities. Contour knob is way better than a presence knob (imo). The fdd button is a must as well.
Shadow zone live onwards was a mg. Wisconsin and machine ect was the valvestate. Was on their forum back in the days and spoke with both guitarists.
Oh thanks, that's cool to know!
It was the 8100
You already had me at Wayne Static 😂 great video!
Thanks 🤘😄
What a nice dude.. Support this Guy.
🤝
Back in the late '00s you didn't want to mention Marshall MG in the Ultimate Guitar forums lol! They had an insane anti MG group think 😅
I have one and love it! I do have a question, what overdrive pedal do you suggest to put in front of it for metal tones?
Yeah, it really is a great amplifier! Personally, I use a Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive or one of the old MXR Zakk Wylde Overdrive Pedals. Those work great with the MG.
hab ich sehr lange gespielt... astrein...
Freut mich zu hören, ist echt ein super Verstärker 👍
