Hi Gary, I don’t even own a Mac yet 😂 but love watching your videos as they are so good. Straight to the point and no filling out with useless information. A lot of others on RUclips could learn from your approach. Thanks.
I use "Command, Control, Shift 4" all the time to capture portions and have it go to the clipboard so I can paste where I want it. Couldn't live without it. This 'generic' version gives you the whole menu of options, which is nice too.
I use "Command, Control, Shift 4", too. A much better option.
Merry Christmas Gary, love short and concise tips, keep up the good work.
Merry Christmas Gary. Thanks for teaching about Mac. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making these videos for your subscribers. Macmost rocks.

Merry Christmas and thanks for show how to use the entire Screenshot tool!
Thank you! You’re the best! Happy holidays!
Thank you, Gary. You finally uploaded something I already knew. The Command, Shift, 4 works best for me. Merry Christmas. 🎄
I have been doing this since I most likely learned about this tip from a previous video of yours. I tell everyone about this tip.
Works all the time and is so easy to do. Keep up the great work!
AWESOME, thank you GARY 🙏

Why am I feeling a sense of déjà vu? 😊

I wonder if this is even feasible to write a QuickAction or a Workflow (as an extension for Preview) to stitch several screenshots together into one graphic. Sort of like you do 2up, 4up or 9up in some printer dialogs, except that I need to make it from clipboard (pasting one after another).
Thank you very much for the good tips. I want to know if it is possible to change the file's name before it is saved in the folder
Yes. Set it to open in Preview instead of save to a location. Then you take a screenshot and it opens a new, unsaved image in Preview. Then File, Save (Command+S) and it prompts you to save with a name and location.
@@macmost Thank you very much for your help
Unrelated, but Gary, do you use Raycast?
I’m wondering what you think of it’s clipboard manager versus the one you wrote. Thanks.
No, sorry, I don't.
Good to know but hard to remember. Is there a way to do this without having to use all the finger gymnastics? It’s like playing twister with your fingers!
Thanks
It is just 3 keys. Command+Shift+5. You could reassign it to something else, but there are only so many keys on your keyboard so a Command+(something) would be hard to find that isn't used elsewhere.
Now you mentioned this, I see a lot of people on Facebook doing that. It's so annoying and not Apple-ish at all
I've gotten used to cmnd-shft-4 and then I can crop exactly what I want a screenshot of.
Question: How do I take a screenshot of a webpage that has more content than what's currently on the screen? Such as a web page that you need to scroll down to see all of it.
Thanks.

I saw that your screen dump was a .png-file. I have it set to be a .jpg-file but default is .bmp, i guess. I had to use the command line to change it, are there any easy way to change this setting?
No, usually png is what you get (not bmp). PNG is non-lossy compressed. It really depends on what you are using the screenshots for. You can always convert them later I suppose. I don't know of an easy way to change the setting.
On my dual monitor set up, even when I am watching your video on one monitory the command.shift.5 will only select my Studio Display monitor. I have always used the command.shift.4 in the past which works fine... suggestions? Thanks for the numerous lessons, saved me numerous times.
If you use Command+Shift+5 then you click on the screen you want to screenshot. Or use the button in the control to capture both.
@@macmost Not to belabor this but... nothing changes with clicking on the screen. What does happen is a highlighted box with dotted lines around it appears on my Studio Display and if I drag it to the other monitor the return, I get a screenshot with a 5 second countdown. The selected area box seems to default to whatever display was captured last... thanks for your suggestions.
@@tomeckles Check your OPTIONS as you seem to have the Timer set to 5 seconds there.
Hi Gary. Do you know of a clean way to capture RUclips videos? There are websites that claim to do this but they look scammy. Maybe it is impossible? Thanks very much!
Usually, you don't do that because, well, copyright.
I've configured it to save screen shots to another folder, not the desktop. However, sometimes it won't save the captured image to that location and just disappears. I change the setting to another folder and for a while images are saved there. Then they stop being saved there and I have to do this over again.
It's rather annoying when it happens. I use this feature a fair bit so, to go looking for the images and not being able to find them is frustrating.
I've created save folders on the Mac SSD (still called HDD in Finder for some weird reason), on an attached SSD that is a permanent setup, on my Synology NAS. Makes no difference.
I've never seen that. Maybe you are clicking on the trash icon or some other sharing method by accident in those cases?
@@macmost All I do is Shift - Command 4, then highlight the area to be grabbed. It then appears briefly on the desktop and shortly afterwards it disappears, usually appearing in the chosen folder.
Lately it's been fine. But this was happening after I upgraded to Sonoma 14.2. I'm now at 14.2.1, so maybe there was a bug? Dunno.
Anyway, thanks again for your channel and the fact that you reply to people on here. Not many do that.
@@mjpt57 By "appears briefly on the desktop" do you mean as a file, or as the floating thumbnail at the bottom right? I assume the floating thumbnail. It should go to the destination 100% of the time if you dont' click on it. Hard for me to say from afar why it isn't for you. I wouldn't assume a "bug" in macOS. It is much more likely something specific to your Mac.
How to remove the file data of the screenshot to send it to someone? Cause there’s a web app that can identify what device, ip address, and all the data of the device where you took the screenshot…
This will be a big help MacMost… Thank You…
What's the goal here? The IP address is not something recorded in a screenshot (nothing to do with it). Device data is usually something you want the other person to know. So not sure what it is you are trying to do here.
how to take a screenshot if i use keyboard onlyyyy
Look in System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts and then Screenshots. You'll see the keyboard shortcuts listed there and can check to make sure you have them enabled.
Nice, but what if you aren’t using an expensive Apple keyboard?
You have a keyboard that doesn't have a Command key, Shift key, or 5 key?
Command, shift 5
Why doesn't this work on my iMac?
What are you trying, exactly? Are you on a much older version of macOS?
shift, command, #5 does NOTHING on my Mac Pro
Check in System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts (button), then Screenshots. Make sure you haven't changed the shortcut or disabled it.
useless
Why is this useless? Are you trying to do something else? If so, what?
