In his first-ever Doctor Who novel, Tom Baker’s incredible imagination is given free rein. A story so epic it was originally intended for the big screen, Scratchman is a gripping, white-knuckle thriller almost forty years in the making.
The Doctor, Harry and Sarah Jane Smith arrive at a remote Scottish island, when their holiday is cut short by the appearance of strange creatures - hideous scarecrows, who are preying on the local population. The islanders are living in fear, and the Doctor vows to save them all. But it doesn’t go to plan - the time travellers have fallen into a trap, and Scratchman is coming for them.
With the fate of the universe hanging in the balance, the Doctor must battle an ancient force from another dimension, one who claims to be the Devil. Scratchman wants to know what the Doctor is most afraid of. And the Doctor’s worst nightmares are coming out to play…

"The Timelord was late" *that's me* 😂😂
Gods, my heart can't take this.
"The Renegade-- *points at self*"
He could be reading the yellow pages and i'd still be mesmerised.
💙💙
Hi!
Are you looking for a jelly baby, Doctor Who?
You're Awesome Tom Baker! No matter how bad: 'Series 11,' gets, we all will remember the masterpieces, of your era! :)
Can I just ask, who actually runs this channel (like commenting and stuff)?
Yeah, you do realize that we don't exactly complain about: 'Series 11,' for no reason, right? We honestly think the fact that you're not bringing back the: 'Valyard,' 'Rani,' 'Meddling Monk, (Which, you had a perfect opportunity, to bring back, in: 'Rosa,')' 'Susan,' 'Ian,' 'Ace,' 'Paul McGann,' etc, is kind of disappointing? And, although I hate to say it, these actors aren't going to be around forever.
The man's an absolute treasure, a legend, thank you so much Tom for the hours, no, weeks of pleasure you have given us, on tv, on audio and at public appearances. You ARE The Doctor!
Couldn't agree more with this comment.
I like how the reference to this being "his first-ever Doctor Who novel" implies there might be more.
Oh, that would be great.
Aww Tom!! How can anyone not love him
It always seems like he's talking directly to whoever is watching in a not lame way
I think being read to by Tom Baker has to be one of the most joyous experiences in life. ‘Buy one for your Granny’...best sales pitch ever!!😂❤️
I wish he would pause to say "I like that bit," in the actual recording.
Isn’t Tom Baker just marvellous! He always has been. He’s a British national treasure. I’d love to have this as an audio book, with Tom Baker narrating it, himself.
You're in luck! He does in fact read the audiobook version of this, which is available now 🎧
The guy is a genius. Should have been writing the show all along.
Agreed! He should do it now, more than ever! :)
He would be a better writer than Chris Chibnall, in my opinion.
I don't think there's many whovians on the planet, that would he worse, than: 'Chris Chibnall.'
You guys can f-off. Steven Muppet & Russel T. Rabies were hacks too. The reason the BBC continue to make the show plagiaristic, melodramatic, cartoony trash is to appeal to you losers, the least you can do is appreciate it, instead of rage quitting over a superficial non-change, which is an integral part of the show's longevity.
I think Jodie does a good job as the Doctor, in my opinion she plays it a little like Mr. Baker. How ever some of the stories have been a little lame.
The curator talking about his past
What an absolute legend this man is.
I read a fascinating account by the late Ian Marter, describing his and Tom's initial concept for this story, their meetings with director James Hill, and the task of shopping it around to various production companies (and of course raising money!). While it was never greenlit, there was certainly buzz. It appears that they even heard from Vincent Price, who'd expressed an interest in playing Scratchman! So wonderful that we finally get to sink our teeth into this epic story! I like to think Ian Marter would have been proud.
Tom baker was my first doctor. And will always be my favorite no matter how much I love the others
Audiobook. Narrated by Tom. I'd pay good money for that!!!
It's on Audible narrated by Tom
@@baghead777 you have made my day!!!!
@@baghead777 purchased. Thank you!!
this in and of itself was the best Doctor Who "episode" I've watched in years.
I love Tom Baker. He'll always be "My Doctor"
That's nice
I'd love to listen to an audiobook version of this where they haven't cut out all of Tom's little comments as he reads.
Oh a lot of them are still in it
This is the best episode of Jackanory I've ever seen
I could listen to Tom Bakers voice all day.
I'm definitely going to be getting a copy of this book! Tom's vision of the Doctor has always been my favourite! Thank-you Mr. Baker for your brilliant portrayal of the Doctor!
Tom Baker is THE DOCTOR.
No other has come close.
Have watched the show since the Pertwee era and quit watching a few years back. Mat was the last good Doctor.
Thank you Tom for what promises to be Dr Who the way it was supposed to be.
The Curator wrote a book, and took on the pen name of Tom Baker.
This is my new headcanon
Tom is a legend & my all time favourite Doctor, a bonkers brilliant eccentric who I adore his Doctor Who stories have got me through some very dark times in my life, this novel & audiobook pre-ordered.
I can't wait to read/hear this.
2:56 "Through gritted teeth!" lol
5:50 I would've brought one for my granny, but sadly she passed away last year. Such a shame as you were her favourite Doctor, Tom (and mine too =D).
Tom Baker is a treasure. He really is Doctor Who, and no one can tell me otherwise.
Jodie: No... It's *The Doctor*!
(Referencing her rant about her getting called doctor who instead of the doctor) (even though everyone says doctor who as it's more or less tradition)
@@Magnus-gh8gp um actually if you look at the credits for the episodes, Tom Baker is listed as 'Doctor Who'. As is William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Christopher Ecclestone. FACT CHECK BEFORE YOU TELL OTHERS WHAT THE FACTS ARE!
Edit: Sorry I only saw the actually he's Doctor Who bit, sorry to have a go at you 😅
@@logicallyblue3814 retracted my reply saying that the reply you made was unnecessary, I forgive you.
@@logicallyblue3814 and also Tom baker did do the voice of mr Haney on Arthur and Tom baker is the new voice actor for mr Haney the only British actor on tv show Arthur since 1996
So was Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, etc.
Looks And sounds like something I’ll enjoy, Thank you Sir Tom (I’m sure the Queen is, at this very moment, dictating your knighthood recommendation, let me know when it arrives.) That was Marvellous, like cheese on toast with a touch ( just a touch mind you) of Marmite.
Thought I would find you here....A touch of Marmite, nay a generous spreading is better.
brent newman He’s just the right side of crazy for me.
Can't wait to read your book Mr. Baker. I became a Whovian when you were playing the doctor, to me you will always be The Doctor.
Tom Baker is still amazing I see. Is there nothing he does that isn't great? Even his cameo on Black Adder was hilarious.
Tom is the gift that keeps on giving
Age hasn't changed that wonderful deep toned voice. Brings back memories . Didn't know he had put a book out. Now I will have to get it. Would love his all his new stories of Dr Who on audio that he has done to.
Tom Baker should just put out a 12 part serious on iTunes where he reads portions of his book in this way - i'd buy that for sure
Tom never changes, nor those fabulous dulcet tones. Looking forward to reading the book over the weekend.
Tom Baker is a treasure. Thank you tom for being Dr Who and making my life more interesting.
"It's by... hold on" *checks the cover
LOL!!!
Oh my. What beautiful tones. Marvellous man
Love you Tom. I preordered it. Until we meet again!
The only book where the audio book spoken by Tom Baker is more important than reading it your self !
Old guy from 1962 here : i remember when Dr Who and the Scratchman was just a rumor about a lost movie script i read in Doctor Who Monthly .. I´m so glad to see this..
I know mr Baker proberly newer chek out comments on this channel but anyway : Thanx for all the entertainment - loved your autobiography too - both on vhs and years later as mp3 - amazing how you can share your life like that - THANX ! *S*:)
Tom...You make me so happy!!!
This guy cracks me up! He's doing such a great job!
If only we could of had Tom as the Doctor with the production values of today. Tom Baker was the Doctor I grew up, with along with John Pertwee. I just prefer the more modern productions of today.
Wow Tom is looking fantastic!
What a voice
Ian Marter would be proud of it
I could listen to tom read his story just about all day long. What a legend.
I'm so very much looking forward to reading this! And I know I'll be sitting there reading each phrase with his brilliant voice in mind! 🙂
Am I the only one who would pay better than good money to have the whole thing read to me like this? How frightfully charming this video is.
Tom has a certain magic to him. I cant put my finger on it but it is there.
What a FABULOUS audiobook this is (but I'm only halfway through it yet, so No Spoilers given or wanted!). When Tom is Dr Who he throws himself into the part which, apart from a few breaks, has been his alter-ego for more than 40 years on screen and radio/audio books. To have a Dr Who book which he himself has written, which such knowledge and experience, is a true marvel. Instead of hamming up the text, it's pre-hammed before he gets his wonderful oratory powers around it. Even how he announces the chapters is superbly done, with a cheeky, I'm-over-80-but-still-with-a-wicked-glint-in-my-eye manner. Please sir - can we have some more? This is the best thing who've ever done :)
Very eerie! I look forward to getting my hands on a copy of this! Tom is a fantastic reader, I could listen to him all day!
Thanks Tom, for all the memories, it has been great.
I'm on chapter 8 right now and I'm already hooked, I've got it on Audible and the way the music plays up at the end of every chapter makes it really creepy and I love it!
Mr Baker, you Sir are a saint and I'd love to have the opportunity to meet you one day.
I love and respect all the Classic Doctors. But Tom is my Doctor. When I was young I dreamed of the adventures we could have.
I bought the Kindle version, then I realized how much I wanted actually to hold the book in my hands and turn real paper pages, and now, by gum, it looks like I'll be getting the audio version, too. It's like really traveling back in time: the wonder I felt in 1975, when a public broadcasting station in Minnesota first picked up episodes of Doctor Who: it's come back. Thank you, Tom. Thank you always.
Congratulations, Tom, and thank you very much. 👏🏻
Oh, Tom! Forever my favourite.
Saw this and bought the book the moment it was available on audible, Thank you, Dear Doctor, wherever you are, For another wonderful adventure!
Just hearing you read it makes me remember those Saturday nights from the 70's when i watched you as my favorite Doctor on my local PBS channel!!!! You and Sarah Jane were my favorite time travelling crime solving!!!!!! Liz will be missed!!!! My she rest in peace!!!!!!!
Absolutely barking Delightfully tastefully mad
I get one defiantly he's as good as he ever was where's his knighthood!?!
Tom was my first doctor, I respect them all but Tom will have a special place for me.
Oh, dear Tom, I do have one answer to your recommendation:
YES.
It would be kool to do a full feature cartoon of this book and other stuff featuring Tom bakers voice. In my opinion he is the embodiment of who the doctor really is.
You can’t help but love Tom Baker
Love his voice i have to get the audio book,he still got it,may you regenerate over and over again.
Thank you Tom.
Just hearing Tom reading his book is amazing! I must get it at once! Hope there's an audio too!
there is, read by him
Good god why am I crying rewatching this.
The one dislike is from the Master.
What a treat to be able to get this on audio book and have Tom read it to you, that's my next purchase
My Childhood. ❤️
Thanks Tom!!!! You were the Dr. That ever saw!!!! You will always be the quintessential Doctor and shale always be so!!!!! I plan on buying this as soon as i see it on the shelves!!!!!!! This first reading has got me spine tingling excited to read it!!!!!
Love this so much ;-)
I'll never be as happy as Tom
He really is the doctor and always will be ❤️
So were all the other actors before and after him.
@@minicle426 Absolutely, I love them all. I just feel Tom is on another level. He wasn’t really acting when he was in that role. There’s just as much of Tom in the doctor as the doctor is in Tom if you know what I mean. This guy could easily be from another world.
I can confirm, it's bloody marvelous.
Well, I guess a trip to Barnes and Noble is in order. If the Doctor recommends a book, who am I to resist.
God, I love him. I would listen to him read the entire internet. Please live forever, Tom.
One of those rare individuals who warms my heart just by being there.
Wonderful! (and when you read the book, you can hear it all in his voice)
Love it!
I adore this man wholeheartedly
0:09 Tom you have two hearts, remember?
How awesome would it be, now that Tom is back on board, if Big Finish could do a re-jigged, audio only version of ‘The Five Doctors’ with new dialogue from Tom spliced in. Tom could read reworded responses to Elizabeth Sladen’s original lines, thus matching him with Sarah Jane. Then Katy Manning, as Jo Grant, could read Sarah Jane’s original lines in response to Jon Pertwee. Convoluted? Yes. In keeping with The Five Doctors script twists? Also yes.
I do so love this man! ❤️❤️
Tom Baker aka Doctor Who. You are and will always be the definite article.
Tom Baker is a national treasure. In both US and U.K.!
Tom Baker is amazing!! I really want to read this book!
I bought the book and the audiobook, thankyou Tom you absolute legend!
The man is has a voice like silk. I hope he narrates the audio book and how does he keep looking so good? Bless you Tom, or it should be Sir Tom Baker.
I LOVE this man...my Doctor!
Gotta get the book- Tom Baker is still my favorite Doctor!
I can’t wait to read this!
THIS MAN IS A TREASURE HE MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS!!!
Love this dude always have
Well, that was amazing, can't wait to buy it
Yesss, wellll! This will be great fun I'm sure. Thanks Tom! :)
