Blind Doctor Who super fan meets one of his heroes, Tom Baker, thanks to inspirational fundraising campaign.
Louis,19, from Bradford, has been blind since he was 18 months old. A few weeks ago, Louis launched a fundraising campaign on Crowd Funder in an attempt to raise £15,000 to make it possible for a charity, Living Paintings, to make a set of Touch to See books which will bring him and other blind and partially sighted people closer to the incredible world of Doctor Who.
Having blasted through his first fundraising target Louis is now looking to raise an incredible total £25,000 to support the charity that has helped him since he was two years old.
Louis says of his motivation to carry on with the campaign:“Living Paintings has had such a hugely positive impact on my life, from the first time I received a book and found out what Thomas the Tank Engine looks like (until then I had no idea what a train with a face could possibly mean), to helping me learn to read and express myself. I wouldn’t be who I am today without this wonderful charity and I hope people continue to support me on this journey so I can help other children facing the struggles I overcame with their help.”
Louis and Living Paintings have been overwhelmed by the support shown by the Doctor Who community and this week he met one of his favourite ever Doctors on Zoom, the wonderful Tom Baker.
Louis’ campaign has been supported by many others from the cult show, he has received messages of support from:
Sir Derek Jacobi: “Having played The Master in the TV series, Doctor Who, I just love the idea of blind and partially sighted children and people being able to enjoy the spectacle of the show as sighted people do. I wish you the very best of luck.”
Sylvester McCoy: “The Whoniverse is all embracing and this enables our blind friends to immerse themselves more fully in it’s pleasures too. Great work Louis and Living Paintings.”
David Bradley: “Good luck, and as The Doctor would say “go forward in all your beliefs, and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine”. You’re a hero Louis, and I wish you all the best.”
Chis Chibnall ( Doctor Who showrunner): “Louis, this is a wonderful project. I think The Doctor would be cheering you on, all the way. All respect, admiration and support to you.”
Louis is raising the money via a Crowdfunder campaign:

No matter Tom's age his voice seems eternal.
i was thinking that too. you'd think being in his late 80's, his voice would have changed a lot, but he sounds exactly the same
Exactly.
That's the first thing I noticed.
He has a great voice.
It demonstrates what a great professional he is to keep his voice in such good form. It's always a joy to hear someone who is candid, exuberant and witty.
Priceless. His vocal chords should be bottled for prosperity.
"You may be A Doctor, but I'm The Doctor. The definite article, you might say"
Tom is the man. There is no one like Tom Baker. A true treasure.
A God!
My Hero!
Ha-ha!
Not going to lie, I welled up a bit when Tom made the effort to describe the Doctor's face. What a kind man.
I could listen to Tom talk about himself for hours.
Tom Baker's Voice to Doctor Who is like James Earl Jones is to Star Wars. Amazing Voice.
About that… Tom Baker was in Rebels, he plays the Bendu.
@@TheEmeraldMenOfficial Wow! Nice information
So pleasing to see that Tom still has every one of his marbles
Yeah but the one question I would of asked him is was the jelly babies his idea?
Tom Baker is not a legend,
He is THE Legend. The Original, you might say.
The defenent article you might say 😀
Jelly Baby coming your way.
@@minifigsinmotionofficial What, really? Wow. Your secret is safe 😉
"What's the point in being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes?" - Tom Baker
This is the most wholesome thing ive ever seen
It’s great to see he’s looking well!
I was worried for a time as he looks like he’s lost weight but he seems well and In good spirits!
Maybe covid convinced him to lose weight. He was older, and overweight. So... yeah. You can only control one of those, without taking HGH (which repairs telomeres).
he was a bit overweight in recent years, people often lose weight as they age, moreover, one rarely sees people who are both very old, and very overweight, for good reason. glad he's trimmed down a bit.
He's almost 90 and SO switched on. Looking forward to his next adventure!
Yes, I was worried when I saw the still shot. But no, he's fine. :)
87 now!
Such kindness, Tom Baker is truly the Doctor.
Tom is quite pleased that he is still the longest running Doctor. :-)
Tom is doing great - totally switched on and his voice is in fantastic shape
That voice just remains the same. It’s incredible
Probably the greatest voice of all time. What wonderful humans being.
Was this the voice in Little Britain btw….?
@@Curi0u50ne Yes!
Alongside Richard Burton I would say he's definitely one of the greatest voices of all time 🎉
Hopefully they can find a reason to include the curator in the 60th anniversary.
I suspect he won't come back as the curator, he didn't feel very welcome by the production staff. They brought him in and and soon as the scene was done, had him sent off. It also sounds like they didn't give him much to work with or allow him to adlib or play around with the script like he likes to do. Really business like. It almost seems like the production staff at that time didn't understand what a big deal it was to have him come back, or the impact he had on a generation of viewers that he did. I'm sure the other actors understood this aspect, but everyone else on the production wasn't well informed.
No, no, bring him back for a full series.
@@marcusdamberger No disrespect to your comment, this may be the case, however, I have read two other interviews with Tom, and he tells a different story. He was not well at the time and agreed to appear in the 50th, and although it was an early start for him, 4 in the morning he was picked up, ( due to the secrecy of his involvement ) he wanted to do the scene and return home as quickly as was possible. He commented that everyone was very nice, especially Matt Smith, But this is Doctor Who we are talking about, so 'Who, Knows?'
@@marcusdamberger That's because these kids are respect-less, ignorant twits.
Tom Baker: This hero didn't want to change because there was nothing to change to.
Peter Davison: What!?!?!?!
I wonder if people know the story of how that scarf came to be...
The BBC contracted with a very nice lady to knit it for them and gave her a quantity of yarn, but they never specified that she didn't have to use it all. So she used it all, and the result was unfeasibly long. The Costumer apologized to Tom, but of course, being Tom, he thought it was brilliant and wore it anyways. It did come in handy as a sort of emergency sling on location for "The Sontaran Experiment" when Tom broke his collarbone during filming.
The name of the lady was Begonia Pope.
They knew nothing about knitting and had no idea of how much yarn to buy. So they bought a lot and she knitted all of it.
That remarkable voice doesn't change, all these decades later. Great interview.
He still has the Voice, and the Smile.
We love you Tom you are a legend
I saw the thumbnail and thought, "Tom's looking a bit thin there. A bit frail, I hope he's ok". Yet, within seconds of the vid, his voice booms out and I thought, "nope. He's still got it. Always the Doctor!"
You can tell how proud he is as being the only longest served doctor who and i don't think we will see another like him
He looks obviously older but he seems eternally youthful in his manner, his wit and his marvelous voice
"I could go on talking about myself for a long, long time" - That's typical Tom. 🤣
Tom is fantastic! He's more than just a legend. I am lost for words....He is the Doctor!
Tom should be knighted. ❤
Not just that but regenerated as well!
Tom Baker continues to be my favorite actor to play the role of the Doctor. It was disappointing that he did not get any scenes in the 50th anniversary with David Tennant, BUT it is a testament to his portrayal of the Doctor that he returned as a "future incarnation" of the Doctor!
You should listen to out of time if you haven’t already! It’s Tennant and Tom together
My favourite Doctor is Patrick Troughton, but I get your point.
Great interview - Tom Baker is the best Doctor.
Tom Baker was my favourite Doctor. Hope he's well. Wish I could say hi to him. Fan from Australia.
Tom is still a great guy. May he become 100 and more years old.
Tom was the BEST Doctor. The other's were/are good. But no one was as good as Tom Baker.
It hard to believe it was 40 years ago that he left the show.
He got a lot thinner. I hope he's not sick. He's my Doctor since I was a kid.
What a national treasure tom Baker is. Immortal like a time lord. Brilliant interview.
Shit Tom's looking so old now he's lost alot of wieght the past couple of years hope he's keeping alright bless him legend
Must you swear? Tom would never swear.
I love Tom Baker and Tom Baker as the Doctor. My favourite and best Doctor ever
God I love Tom, would love to meet him again, saw him at the 50th celebration but I was just too star struck seeing my childhood heroe to say anything.
I wish I'd had the chance to meet him. The closest I got was standing next to his Madame Tussaud's waxwork years ago. And it would be that day I forgot to bring my camera! *facepalm* lol
@@katyw3853 Ah bless, now a days with phones with cameras, easy. The waxwork figure was great though, right? But not as great as the real thing
Those magnificent tones! How fortunate we are to live in the time of Tom Baker.
Tom Baker has always been THE Doctor, IMHO, & inspired me to knit my own ridiculously long scarf - which I still wear, on occasion. I was so angry when he left the show, I never watched Dr. Who again. Love you forever, Tom - thanks for being The Doctor & for being you. & Louis, what a great project! I hope it all comes together for you.
The fact that he wasn't acting as the Doctor, but being Tom .... for me, every time I see an interview or something with him ... its the Doctor.
Gosh, that smile never changes! What a legend! Fantastic interview!!!
This is wonderful. Another example of why the DW fandom is so good and inclusive.why the one thumbs down confounds me.
There is always one clown who clicks a down thumb. It's pathetic and obsessional but pay no notice to them
The one dislike was probably Davros.
There's two now. I think Chinballs must have watched it.
"Im not from this world" Thanks Tom, always knew it. He really is an alien
great interview
Tom is an absolute treasure. Bring him back for a full series!! Bring back Philip Hinchcliffe too.
As a blind bloke myself, this is awesome and inspiring. Thanks :)
Tom Baker is awesome and my favorite Dr who. I have great childhood memories of watching him on tv in the 80s. Thanks for this great interview
Oh my goodness, what a joy this was! The wonderful Spirit that is Tom Baker. I just adore him! So glad he’s still going, and amazing that he’s still lucky to have that great voice, and his personality in take. Thank God! Such a lucky guy interviewing him too. Good for him.
There is no greater appreciative fan than the ones who consider the 4th Doctor "their doctor"... Tom Baker really is "The genuine article". No other doctors come close.
He’ll always be my Doctor. Stumbled on The Ark in Space on my local PBS channel one late Saturday night in 1984-ish, hooked from that point on.
This is one of the best interviews with Tom Baker. Thank you for posting it. 👏🏻👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
@@LouisMoorhouseMusic You’re welcome.
It’s so good to see Tom still active and clearly still switched on. The special books for vision impaired persons sounds like a wonderful idea!
I've said it before and I'll say it again. If one had Tom Baker and Brian Blessed tag team reading the ingredients list to a bottle of HP Sauce and recorded it, it would be the most fascinating thing ever!
Baker is to Who what Connery is to Bond IMHO - the definitive portrayal despite much to enjoy from other efforts. However a part of me will always remember him fondly as Puddleglum the Marshwiggle!
Absolutely spot on. You nailed it with this comment. Who and Bond, the two best creations, and the only two to be able to continue, hopefully forever, with changing actors. Let's be honest, Doctor Who nailed it with regeneration, Bond just got away with it with mega bucks and great casting, still they both have a place in history, and my heart.
Brilliant interview with a true gentleman, met him once he does not dissapont, in character as the doctor what a guy!
Louis' campaign is amazing
Wow, thanks for this Louis and keep us updated on the campaign! And as for MY Doctor. Tom Baker is a living legend!
Thanks for your support, much appreciated. You can see how the campaign is doing over at

The once and future king. Lovely to see and feel that energy and hear The Voice.
Two legend discussing a legend show
I loved Tom's Doctor growing up. No matter how scary the monsters were, his presence made me feel safe. Except that one cliffhanger where the Doctor was torn to pieces and I was traumatised for the entire week leading up to the next episode.
Leisure Hive Part One cliffhanger!
Yes!
I remember the one where he was drowning that was terrifying!
"no one's ever failed as Dr Who" - he obviously hasn't seen the latest series then
Yes, I mentioned Jodie FAILING BIG TIME in my comment. Now there's the flaming Doctor who will also FAIL BIG TIME!
I said it once and i'll say it again. This man has made Doctor Who famous and the most recognizable doctor at a good amount of time. And i like to salute this man for not changing his character on or off screen.
As he said, he was already the character of the Doctor inside. That is why his performance always seems the most natural.
Tom Baker 🥺
He's still the same old Tom I remembered as a child growing up. God bless him, and hope he lasts forever. And kudos to the Blind chap, I hope one day that they finally get to make it possible for him to see, even a little of the wonderful sights and colours that this world has to offer.
you were and always be the best doctor who good to see you tom keep going reg
From my childhood. Thanks Tom, you made a young boy very happy in his childhood and an older man thankful to have had you as Dr Who.
This man is a national treasure and he will always be my Doctor love you Tom!
Tom is a lovely man and was a great doctor.
Legends should NEVER grow old! They should inspire every new generation, especially the children of each of them..
I just bought Tom Baker's "Scratchman" on Audible thanks to *this* - great surprise to have the Doctor actually narrating the story in the first person - wow - why didn't they do this before? Incredible.
Tom, and for the record, forget Tony Hopkins. You're much more fun to watch and listen to!
If you never knew that Tom Baker was awesome, this short interview would cement that. To me, he is the best, was the best doctor, perfectly encapsulating the essence of the character during his long tenure in the role. A perfect combination of a great actor, great writing made his stories timeless.... Hail Tom Baker!
Best Doctor ever.
Wew lad he certainly has slimmed down since his interview with Nicholas Briggs, he's more recognizable now. Also amazing work, kudos to Louis for doing such a hard work for such a noble cause.
Tom Baker is a great human being. God Bless him.
Poor guy is fading but that voice is still so strong 😁😁😁
DEAR GOD! I love this man.
He is my Doctor and always will be, because he was the first for me to see on Tv on PBS back in 74
My child hood hero and favorite Doctor bar none! Its so great to see him still sharp, witty and doing well and acting the part he perfected right out of the gate in 1974!
I don't listen to a lot of interviews of actors but I love listening to Tom Baker. He's everything you want him to be and more when he's just talking. I could listen to him endlessly.
Happy birthday Tom Baker!
Aww!! Lovely interview! Tom's still got a fantastic voice to listen to. It's funny how he can verge on bragging but not sound conceited, likely because it's all true and he's such a sweetheart! He's my favourite classic Doctor. All the best with the books, Louis! Those sound fantastic!!
Absolutely love him!
Wonderful to catch up with Tom and see him looking so well and his usual self. He's been quiet on the world stage generally but I'm glad to see he's still working at Big Finish. Great cause too!
Good to hear Tom Nick Jan Russell
I love Tom but just want congratulate Louis for all the work he is doing
Thanks so much. Really appreciate it!
Impossible to dislike a Doctor, Tom? In enters Jodie.
He is quite lucid for 88 (his age here). He is 90 now. What a great sense of humour. I love his explanations here.
Tom Baker IS The Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen IS his assistant
nice interview Good to see the national treasure speaking in these hard times.
I think Paul McGann was the longest if you take into account the time between the TV movie and his regeneration!
Yeah that’s a good point actually haha. I guess I was thinking just of time on TV. Paul is also one of my favourites though!
surprisingly no, the longest serving is actually Sylvester
I had the privilege to meet Mr Tom Baker He is an aurora of delight what a true lovely gentleman Love from Dex88, Dexter the doberman and Isis from the heavens above
When I was a kid, I wanted Tom Baker to be my Dad.
He is magical!
He is my favourite doctor
I loved Tom´s Captain Rum in Blackadder II :)
A thespians voice and a mischievous wit . ..I still rate Jon Pertwee as the most exciting doctor who. Tom's voice is a gift for the stage or television ..
Love Tom ❤️
Great cause, great awareness - Louis, congrats on your campaign and advocacy. Thanks to Tom for helping raise awareness for an incredible initiative.
Much respect from an Englishman in a French forest!
An Englishman who is going to order The Brain of Morbius on DVD immediately after this!
Bless you both... even K9! 🏆🇬🇧
wonderful to see Tom so very open and still there. My fav is Jon but Tom is second there.....
Same
My fav is Pat. But Tom and Jon come close.
As always Tom has the human touch and patience and much compassion for all his fans.
