Back when they came out in the '80's, I bought both "The Tonight Show Band, Volumes I and II" and was NOT disappointed. I watched the Tonight Show a lot back in those days and always hoped they would record an "LP"(shows you how dated I am). And they DID! Listened endlessly to both forever. On one they showed the recording studio on the back with all the wires and amplifiers...WOW! They're both worth your time and money 'cause this stuff is timeless.
I had this album and their second one(Vol II) that bought back in the eighties. The vinyl records were lost in a house fire about 5 years ago and I haven't replaced them. Those "albums", as they were referred, are like gold in terms of big band sound. Way back in the seventies I always wondered why the Tonight Show Band didn't record any records. Just a few years later, here comes Vol I. Then a couple of years later, Vol. II. I should replace them with CD's I enjoy listening to them so much.
Doc is such a good trumpeter known for his TON and ability to play HIGH NOTES. There's a wonderful video here on RUclips where Johnny Carson is recognized by THE KENNEDY CENTER HONORS and Doc as well as David Letterman and Ted Koppel pay tribute to JOHNNY CARSON. RIP JOHNNY. You are missed.
After seeing Ed Shaugnessy in 1980 on the 50 yard line doing a duet with the Illinois State University drumline at the marching band competition ,.... i had to get white ludwig drums, major in music at ISU and listen to his jazz orchestra!!!!
The Tonight Show Band under Doc Severinsen was the best big band anywhere. And Doc, in his prime (like here for example) was one of the best all-around trumpet players in the world. Notice at the end here he's holding a "double-A" while he switches to one hand so he can cut the band off.
Todays late night show bands are watered down. This was the real deal not todays trash its a disgrace that the music industry let it happen and the lack of old school musicianship is at an all time low. At least we have these videos to reflect and remind us when music was music there were pro bad ass bands like Doc's Severinsen Tonight Show band and Buddy Rich's band kicking it .Enough said!!!!!!!!
It's not lack of "old-school musicianship" that's the problem. Go to a jazz band concert at your local university and you will hear incredibly talented young musicians who practice 8 hours a day to sound just like the guys in this band. Sadly, this type of musicality and talent is no longer appreciated by the culture at large. Jazz bands, big bands, dance bands are all going the way of opera and classical music.
You couldn't put a band with this size and this talent on TV today at ANY price. Want proof? Look at Fallon's band. Look at Colbert's band. Look at ANY "house band' on TV today. Look at Leno's old band. Look at Letterman's old band. Probably the last band of great studio musicians was Ray Bloch and the CBS Orchestra on the Sullivan Show and the Gleason Show.
Good point. I have both their albums, BTW. Bought 'em back in the day when they were fresh off the press...sometime in the mid '80's I believe. Man, they rock.
It is; however it is Ernie Watts who gets credit for the solo on the album, but Pete is listed as part of the band. Great solo by Pete here. Super guy and a tremendous player.
@@melliferatae Ernie Watts may have gotten credit for the solo on the album (I don't have it in front of me at the moment), but I can guarantee you 100% that it is clearly Pete playing the solo on the original album as well. His sound is immediately identifiable.

Pete Christlieb on tenor sax. Just the best!
The unsung hero of this video...
Arrangement by Bill Holman
Absolutely. Killin'.
Still what I consider to be the peak of Big Band Jazz.
They're so good, I can't breathe.

that one-handed Double A at the end tho....
I loved the Tonight Show Band with Doc Severinson
This band kicked major ass! - doc is a very hard working and uniquely talented artist in every sense of the word.

Yes, the University of Nebraska marching band played for Johnny, his alma mater.
doesn't get any better than this!

Beautiful! Vaughn 🎺
Just so damn great❤
I never understood why they didn't feature the band and Doc for one song every night.
Amen to that. The big band jazz is one of the main things I miss about this show.

Whoever gave a thumbs down to the best big band of all time playing a classic absolutely perfect can suck it.
Wow, lovely tune!
Thanks for this, I had Vol. I and II on cassette back in the day. Bought them at the Navy Exchange on GTMO, I think.
I had Vol I and Vol II on LP(black vinyl: remember those?) that were in a house that just burned down around 4 months ago. What a drag.
Dale Andrews What abummer. You can probably replace them on ebay. That's where I found them on cd.
Gotta do this Sunday night sight reading should be a blast!
The best big band ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to thank Dave "Boots" Martin for arranging this for the Empire Statesmen. It was a blast to play!
One of the best tunes ever
Wonderful music, I love it.
Man they just don't make 'em like the used to. Whoa. Awesome.
Doc strikes again!

Fantastic
Awesome!
Hey...Is that Pete Christlieb on tenor?

@@melliferatae They are both monsters!

I'm the 14000 viewer
I wonder if Tommy arranged this.
Bill Holman.
Great version but I like this song slower tempo...not a whirlwind romance kind of song
Great musicians. Often over the top arrangements. Tacky sets.
No
shit take.
