I have been a life long fan of Doc Severinsen's devotion to his instrument. His solo on this track is evidence of that devotion. Well considered notes, played with power and accuracy and one of the greatest trumpet tones and techniques of all time.

Way back in the very early fifties I was known as what is now called "A nerd". Why? Because I did`nt like that old "popcorn music". Songs like Put Another Nickel In and that kind of stuff, I was into the big band sounds, then I discovered the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, and to me THAT was a real music lesson. Eventually some of those who called me a nerd, came round to discover what GOOD music was. So it goes to prove that all is well that ends well.

The “Big Number” featuring every tub, all flags flying, seems more like it. Others have noticed the particularly non-swinging feel and rushed tempo, rightly. Fitting conclusion for a summer pops concert and picnic. Severinson featured with my concert and stage unit way back in 60’s. Novelty numbers, mostly set-pieces. Mulligan was the man of the hour then, and as a bari player myself, doted upon his recordings. Many of which were good, but hardly stellar. He sounds real good tonight, though. Unsurprising, considering that these numbers are in every book, and solos practically rote by now.
    Sound man is tripping.

I respect what they were doing but half the video is introductions. A good 2 minutes of that would have sufficed. And it's a little too fast. It doesn't pick up on the slower world war 2 feeling more like jazzy 80s. But I shouldn't critique I can't play a note.
