cruptbside you are not wrong , I am new to the trumpet, I’ve seen most of the big names and they are all fabulous, there is just something about Docs sound that’s different.
Thank you so much for posting this. What an extreme pleasure to watch Doc especially if you consider there are performances by him from the 50's that you can find on you tube!!
Maynard is the best brass player that ever lived. Herseth is the greatest orchestral trumpet player that ever lived. But Doc could have done anything he wanted. He is what I will try to sound like tomorrow.
If you didn't know he was a living legend, would you be able to tell from watching this performance, and if so, what does he do that distinguishes him from the other very competent musicians in this ensemble? I don't have the experience to know the difference.
+Mat Broomfield He has a huge sound and was one of the greatest band leaders to date. He did amazing things with the Tonight Show Band. Also keep in mind that he was 84 years old at the time of this performance... That in itself is amazing
Both. What creates a huge sound on a brass instruments is the activation of overtones. Brass instruments operate on what's called the Harmonic Series. There's an abundance of tutorials and informative videos on this topic on RUclips. When a trumpet player plays a fundamental note they are creating a vibration at a specific frequency. When they play with good technique, they are able to activate overtones which vibrate at 2x,3x,4x, etc. the frequency of the fundamental note. If you were to hold down the sustain on a piano so that the strings could vibrate freely and played a note on a trumpet directly into the chamber of the piano, you would notice that more than one of the piano strings would begin vibrating and resonating. Activating overtones multiplies the resonance of the note you are playing and creates great tone and increases volume.
Wonderful performance 👏 by Doc and the excellent ARMY BLUES JAZZ ENSEMBLE Vaughn 🎺
Wonderful..my cousin John Gerding retired from the Army he was a musician..what a great gig he had.
The best!!!!!!! 90 years old and still going!!!!!!!
I was in the 2nd Armored Division Band from 1973-1975. This brings back memories! Doc is the best!
US Army musicians inspire, terrific knowledge and skill by their musicians, from the UK.
Ya gotta love the DOC!!!
I'm going to be playing with Doc soon in October. This is one of the songs that he and my college jazz band will be performing. Pretty stoked
Good luck with that. Congratulations. Do well. Eat your vegetables.
cruptbside This post was literally almost a year ago.
I hope you had a blast and your chops were all there!
How did it go, 5 years ago lol
I know they study Docs work. Awesome to see them all together.
I guess my old teacher retired.
Wonderful stuff from a majestic trumpet player and an incredible band.

wow... what an amazing, big sound doc makes.
i have tickets to see Doc tonight. he is playing with the Chattanooga CSO on a night of nothing but big band music. MAN I CANT WAIT!!!!!
DOC. !!!! ❤❤
Shades of Doc of from back in the day. Sounds solid here.
He's probably lost some of his range. Guys in their 90s aren't known for popping double Cs. But he hasn't lost his sound.
SOUND,THANX DOC!!
He's 85 years old! Amazing!
Impresionante
I think Doc has said before back in his prime (50-60's) he'd hit the gym 3-4 times a week along with a strict diet.
The Doc! One of my favorite trumpet players. Is that Steve Carell playing the bass tbone? LOL
Not sure how Doc continues to make it happen. He's coming to Minneapolis in a couple of months and I'm guessing I'll get tickets tonight.
6:57. High F at 85 Yrs of age. Yeah!
Doc was 89 in 2012. Born 1927. His mom lived to 101.

+Keaton Walker Thank you Keaton. When you say a "huge sound" do you mean the tone, or the volume at which he plays?
