Am I the only one that comes back and watches this for a pick-me-up at random times?
I watch this and the koala routine from Carol Burnett and Tim Conway torturing Lyle Waggoner with the Hitler puppet
Whenever I need a laugh, this and 'Sis Boom Baa' are my go-tos.
Gosh, I think I have to watch it daily or I have withdrawls!
I have to watch it every time I see it!
No, you’re not!
Johnny Carson was not a show, it was therapy. He provided an escape from reality. You can't say that about any show anymore. He could have been brilliant that night or could have sucked that night. You didn't give a damn. He was worth every second of your time.
I too dearly miss Johnny and the gang. I just wish future generations just "get" Johnny Carson.
BOEINGNUT As someone who I think qualifies as a member of "future generations", believe me - we do!! :-)
That is somehow slightly comforting. That wasn't staged that's the magic of the moment.
I'm 24 and was born in 1996. And this is the funniest stuff ever. I've watched so much old Johnny Carson with Don Rickles and Rodney dangerfield, George Burns, the list goes on. I'm embarrassed that we have Fallon and Kimmel. They are so boring. This looked like a fun genuine time. I love watching old TV shows. Like Fish, Original chips. This stuff is just humor. And of course Carnac the magnificent with Ed McMahon.
The future generation (with very few exceptions) is too selfish and stupid to "get" anything that's good!!
Spot on. It was FUN. Something we are not allowed to have now.
Never gets old. I cannot count how many times I've watched this. Classic TV.
same here
One of the greatest moments in tv history. Simply brilliant! I miss The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson!!
Same here MovieMan. Same here. 🙂
Every year at Thanksgiving and multiple times in between because yikes.
June 2023.. Watched it over 100 plus times.. Just makes me feel good @ 59..
One of the greatest moments in the golden era of television. Don’t know how many times I’ve seen this but it never gets old!
Doc was upstaging him and Johnny didn't even care. One of the funniest ever.
I always wondered what Ed thought of this.
They were good friends
This is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen. I don't know if Doc Severinsen has a background in comedy or improv or anything but he played it exactly the right way to get maximum laughs
I watch this EVERY year at Thanksgiving. And...I remember seeing it when it originally aired in 1979. We sat in our living room laughing like crazy.
Doc was just plain on FIRE during this bit. It's not often you see Johnny so flustered and out-of-control laughing. Great 6 mins of comedy.
I think they may have gotten into the gin a little early that night lol
"Can you come" - "no" - Epic
Yup!
Happy Birthday to Doc Severinsen, who is 97 years old today, July 7, 2024!
💁♂️🎺
97 now!
These guys will continue to make people laugh for decades to come.
At times like this, we need all the laughs that we can get. Bless you Johnny and Doc.
Totally agree
I miss Johnny Carson so much. There will never be another one like him. ❤️❤️❤️
One of the reasons it’s so funny is that it’s real banter ! Unscripted dialogue between two professional entertainers !
Doc is still with us.. So many have passed away from the show. Fred DeCordava, Tommy, Ed, Johnny, and many of the stars who appeared on the show.
Doc was an absolute sniper through this whole thing. Johnny never knew where the next hit was coming from and he obviously loved every minute of it.
That was the secret of Johnny's amazing success. He wanted the guests to succeed!
The comic timing of Doc answering Johnny's invitation is so perfect! " Well, can you come? " " No." Hilarious! And the final " I can't give you any but I'll sell you some! " Brilliant!!
100% agree! Doc was perfect with those responses and the timing. Those are the two times that I can't help but actually lol!
and the third comment he made, "Ed will be delivering his [alimony] in person." lol
@@njmarknjGiven that Ed was delivering the Sweepstakes winners checks to their houses on camera made this doubly hilarious.😅
Johnny at his worst, was better than any of the current ones today at their best, and this is Johnny at his BEST. NOBODY even comes close today. This is conversational humor at it's best.
Craig Furgeson did!
So true haven’t watched in years got tired of the lame Trump crap 💩 lines
Listening to Johnny laugh makes everything in my difficult world ….,, go away…… love you Johnny and always will….. RIP love.
each year it takes a little more pain away. 😂
It's called talent. Everybody's political now and it's not funny, it's stupid.
I watch this at least once a week and laugh every time.
One of the best spots ever on the Tonight Show. Doc used Johnny as the best straight man and Johnny didn’t see it coming.
Still one of the absolute funniest spur of the moment conversations in tv history! Doc was always good for a laugh, and Carson knew when to let another person take the lead. He was a brilliant comedian and interviewer.....he had perfect timing!
In the parlance of comedy, I've heard it said that Johnny was the unequivocal master of the _pivot._ He could go from being the "gag" man to the "straight" man in a moment's notice, and then back again, and the transitions were seamless. No one else came even close to his mastery of the art.
Doc’s adorable. The chemistry between he and Johnny was always great.
When Johnny invites Doc over for Thanksgiving, "Can you come" "No" 😂😂😂 then Johnny grabs the tissues 😂😂😂and this is the funniest thing I've seen. " Right after sincerely yours" Doc 😂😂 😂" I cant give you any but I'll sell you some " 😂😂😂 " Anything that ugly should die" This is the greatest 6 minutes in history of television. Also im 24 and I grew up with Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and they suck. I did watch when I was young teenager some David Letterman before he retired, but nobody will beat Johnny Carson. The best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be.
I agree 100%
Try Ferguson
I like Ferguson but he can't touch Johnny Carson. No offense...
Ferguson I did watch I guess I forgot about him. Thank you
There will never be another Johnny Carson, never! RIP
How many people miss Johnny, doc, and ed? I know i do.
always.
Miss them so much.!😂
Kinda like Howard, Frank, and Don. The sounds and sights of our youth.
Silly question...😁
Doc is still around..if you miss him then tell him
Doc had Johnny's number that night. What a classic.
p
t
This routine had me rolling on the floor! Carson was one of a kind and though late night tv is still truly entertaining, there will still never be another one like him.
cere tomer what?
That was back in the days when Ed Mcmahon used to hand deliver the Publishers Clearing House checks to winners.
"Yeah, but what does he know? Tie askew and nose aglow." That one should be in a freakin' museum!
Tried to find the NY Post Page 6 item with that headline about Ed but came up empty.
I’ve seen this at least a hundred times! It’s unscripted tv at its best! Carson always made room for spontaneous comedy.
If Johnny Carson was Still alive today and doing the tonight show, America would be a much nicer and Happier place. Thank you God for Blessing us with 30 years of Mr. Carson.
Doc outlived them all! Still alive as of 11/01/2022 at 95 years old!
When Johnny spins around in his chair, you know he's having a good time!
JC: "Can you give me a hit of whatever you are taking tonight?"
DS: "I can't give you any, but I'll sell you some..."
Two of the best..................EVER...........
I watch this ever year around Thanksgiving time; have probably viewed it 50 times and still laugh heartily every single time. I just love everything about it and how much fun these two have. Johnny knows when to let the other person talk and his laughter is priceless. Funny how he’s always straightening his tie and fiddling with the pencils, too. But you have to love that they laughed so hard, they needed Kleenex to wipe the tears. Wonderful stuff!
All from the heart.
He was holding two pencils! Unusual.
The best part is how Doc keeps his cool the entire time and never lets the giggles take over. Smooth, like jazz.
Comedy, GOOD Comedy, is all about the timing. Doc was a musician, so of course he knew just how to deliver. Even unscripted, he knew how to time the lines.
Because he's high
when men were men and knew how to have fun in an eloquent manner and knew that timing and response were an art form instead of making it all about themselves and tripping over their egos.........
Pure fun and laughter for 6 mins straight, followed by deep sadness that those times are over, never to return.
Doc the only one left. I remember watching this. Present day late night is too political.
Love how Carson was never threatened that someone was upstaging him. Doc was killing it and Johnny loved every minute of it.
They were both lit and having a good time
One of the best times. Rates up there with Don Rickles! Sure miss this kind of entertainment.
Doc pulled Johnny out of the "monologue bombs ditch". Tommy Newsome was funny when doc was gone. I just started watching these guys in the last few years, and boy I missed a lot. To have these videos now is a blessing.
@@mattjaitken
I totally understand what you were saying.
I was caught up in the world of work but growing up I remember hearing my parents laugh all the time.
I was having problems sleeping my doctor told me to watch something funny at night so here I am watching all of Johnny Carson's reruns and I'm sleeping better and waking up with good humor in the morning. I guess you could say he's what the doctor ordered
Good point. That is one of the things that made Johnny special. He wanted other people to shine on his show, especially funny people. He did not need to get every laugh himself. He just wanted the show to be top notch, whether he got the laughs, or someone else did. He was secure in himself and his abilities. More evidence of this is how he had guest hosts sit in for him a lot. A lot of hosts would not do that. They would be afraid of the guest hosts being too good.
I could watch and listen to this over and over again … So genuine and off the cuff … and truly sincere!! So very funny EVERY time! Every time I can’t stop laughing because it’s so genuine … Priceless segment of TV history!! Wow …
Couldn't agree more! When I do think about this clip, I have to watch it at least three times in a row!
Never ever gets old...
Hyesterical..." I can't give you any but I'll sell you some !" ..Doc is the only cat ' left from this great show! 90 years old as of 7/7/17..*..Great laughs! I am now 54 and remember these times so well...everyone was happy it seems !
I do as well, I never thought it would happen. I’m my dad.
Totally agree. So many classic lines. I post it every Thanksgiving.
I never saw this when originally aired, so the first time I saw it was during the 18th Anniversary show the very next year. I had just bought my first VCR and had taped it. Rolling on the floor laughing when I did see it. The old tape is now gone, but the clip is here now. TV will never be the same. If there's a comedy outlet in Heaven, these guys will be there all the time.
I was in high school during the late 70's. I remember waking up to the laughter of my dad, who had a night shift, as he was relaxing after work, watching the great ones.
"...and she got bread stuffing and a LOT of money!" 🤣
This may have been the best 6 minutes in talk show history
I second that. It is hilarious.
WRONG!!! GEORGE GOBEL!!!
@@_.-266 Excellent Point,
Took the words right out of my mouth!
@ Peter Mio. The talk about Thanksgiving between Carson and Doc Severinson was even funnier than the famous George Gobel line about a tuxedo and a brown pair a shoes because it was 6 minutes of hysterically funny conversation, whereas the George Gobel funny line as funny as it is and was , was just a brief moment!
That's so amazing! I remember seeing that segment when the show first aired and thought it was some of the funniest material I had ever heard. I still find it hilarious. As it happens, I met Doc Severinsen back when I was in college. The Tonight Show Band came to the school to do a concert, which was fabulous, and some of us music majors went back stage afterwards and met Doc, Tommy Newsom, and Eddie Shaughnessy, the drummer. They couldn't have been nicer and made the evening extra special for me and my friends. I'll never forget them.
Severinsen, this Thanksgiving season, is scheduled to play at the Foo Foo Festival Nov. 10 in Pensacola, Florida, with the local Civic Band. Not performing quite as much as he used to, but still rolling at age 91. I bet this comes up at some point that night.
That just HAD to be a great day! Something you will NEVER forget!!! ❤
I saw it back in '77 or so when it aired. Buddy Rich came out and told Doc "You're way out!"
Nice! The last I knew Doc was still performing at the age of 92!
No ….. this never gets old. These guys were the best …. But then again I am an old 67 year old man who with each passing day looks back fondly on a past I will never see again. That’s what comes with being on the back nine of life.
You said a mouthful brother. Great turn of phrase.
From a fellow 67 year old.
Agree😢
Wait, I've just turned 67 too and I haven't even learned golf. 😊
I'll be 68 in 3 days...man, can I relate.
I just turned 56 and find myself doing the same thing. Things like Thanksgiving and Christmas were just so much different back then. When I watch the shows I grew up with it gives me those pains of nostalgia that I know will never happen again. Perhaps that's just how it's supposed to be. Enjoy what you can, when you can.
Goodness sakes, how I miss the Tonight Show. Yes, you heard me right. For me, the Tonight Show was Johnny and Ed and Doc. How I miss the Tonight Show.
It was before my time, and even I miss the Tonight Show.
Carsons banter with Tommy Newsom was always brilliant as well. Newsom's fish out of water act was hilarious.
I do too! * I am guessing your a bit older then I am at 54...*..we saw some great times! ....Chris Thorton, if you are, YOU for sure saw a fun era!! This is a great classic piece here with Doc' on the spree' for sure! The last thing he said cracks me up everytime!! He's 90 as of 7/7/17..*
And Johnny was absolutely peaking in the seventies.
I know!
My all time favorite moment from The Tonight Show. They're having so much fun together. You can't help but smile like a goof
I've never seen Mr. Carson laugh so much.. I miss that genuine laughter...
Only when Rodney was on.
@@robertstv8045 And Robin Williams
@@miketalley7021 And Rickles
Pure unscripted conversation from the Heart, This is what Class friendships and dignity provide.
"The fact that I never helped her stuff her bird was one of my big problems" 😅😅😅😅😅😅
This is one of the funniest moments in TV history. And Carson/Doc had several of them.
I remember when this was on. What made it especially funny is that it was so out of character for Doc. Usually when he filled in for Ed he didn't say much, just answered questions and provided a little light patter. Johnny must have struck a nerve. Hilarious!
He was also high....said so himself.
It is extra funny when someone is out of character.
Spontaneity at its best and it appeared to be completely unrehearsed! They could that back then, be spontaneous and adlib. Today’s late night? Forget about it!
@@tommymas1 It would be very interesting to know if that was really true. Personally, I'm skeptical. 1) There are many clips on YT where Doc is hilariously funny. He just happened to string a bunch of them together on this night. 2) The irony of someone being high on something is they THINK they're being funny, but most often they really aren't. Doc was tearing it up.
The cameraman was laughing at this segment ❤❤. Such a great time
You can tell Carson is genuinely having a good time. Severinson was a lot funnier that he usually had the opportunity to show.
Docs give was there but just didn't get the chance to use it. During the monologues. Doc would jump in and help Johnny out.
From 1979....Absolutely Hysterical....Must See....there is nobody like Johnny and Doc.....so cool we went to the taping of the Tonight show back in the early nineties with Tony Danza...Rita Rudner and the Allman Brothers band. This particular segment with Johnny and Doc is Improvised humor at its best!!!!
The camaraderie here between Johnny and Doc is just wonderful! Always get a kick out of watching this.
The camaraderie is the key to this conversation , i had a similar kind of bomd with my collegues while in the Royal Netherlands Navy in the eighties. We really were like Pirates of the Carribean , the only things that mattered were Heineken amd the girls in the next weekly port.
I have watched this video for at least a dozen times, and it never gets old.
Every once in a while the stars align, the mood is right, everybody is on their game. This was one night that it just all came together. Happened a lot with Johnny. I do miss him a lot. I stopped watching all talk show TV when he retired. From what I hear, I made the right choice. Nobody can compare to Johnny and Ed. Ever.
** And Doc !
When Doc passes this is the tribute clip they should play.
When Doc would comment when Ed was gone Johnny would say ok bugle breath!
Always loved Doc's banter with Johnny Carson. Amazing that he's pretty much the only person alive from the cast. He turns 90 this year. Bless him.
Still alive today. Young at 93!
Watched him perform a few years ago in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, where he had a home at the time. His musical talent remained as great as ever.
Still kicking at 94 now!
Still alive and kicking!
Again I say “never gets old” Happy Thanksgiving Johnny Carson tune-in-ers..
The master. No talk show will ever come close.
No, it won't. The standard will have to be lowered.
@@ApartmentKing66 The standard would have to be lowered substantially
Not WENDY WILLIAMS?
I’ve said it so many times before this world will never see the likes of the master of entertainment Johnny Carson with his mid-west charm, his charismatic personality, letting his guests shine and never feeling threatened, he was 1in a million. RIP
@@mikewhite4560 Well, point taken. But aside from Wendy Williams, there will never be talent like this again.
I laughed so hard my stomach hurts. Johnny was the absolute master of late night. Jimmy's forced humor will never ever come close to this kind of spontaneous hilarity. Getting to stay up late with my mom and dad and watch Johnny was always a thrill for me growing up.
And Doc is still with us. An unheralded pillar of late night TV.
Doc is now 96 I believe
@@jmirr69 If Johnny and Ed were taking the same stuff Doc was..... I can sell you some.
all that great trumpet playing, his lungs are probably the most healthy lungs on the planet
@@Ron-d2s well if he ain’t gonna take you up on that offer… 👀
So naturally funny. Infinitely funny and watchable and genuine in fact...
This is one of the funniest segments ever. I love Doc. I always looked up to him. I played the trumpet in the jazz band in high school in the 70’s and always admired him
Johnny Carson was the best of the best.
Look at Johnny's reactions to Doc from 4:00 to 4:42. He is so tickled by Doc's comebacks. He loved it when someone was giving it right back to him.
Yes, and he was a great "audience" for Doc; didn't have to "top" him and get the last laugh.
It's as if Doc and Johnny had this conversation, then Doc kept coming back in time to tweak his answers to perfection. Everything was so spot on and not his normal chit chat with Johnny.
Man, it really is. You could not have written this ahead of time any better than how it turned out organically.
"... but what does he know ... with tie askew and nose aglow ... "
One of the funniest, best exchanges ever, Doc nails it one after another. I love how you can see their faces glow and get brighter and brighter and he just keeps it rolling. I don't think Doc was on cocaine, it was a kind of tasteless way to end it, but that was the time that was. Doc did substitute for Ed at times, but based on this, you'd think he'd have done it a lot more often.
do you have this in your archives: Anyone ever see the show where Tommy newsome had the headphones on ? Johnny goes on and on about something while Tommy is spotlighted. When Johnny stops and expects an answer Tommy takes off the headphones and says " sorry, I was listening to the Dodgers game ".....hilarious !
The best part about this conversation was that Carson never wanted to hog all the laughs for himself. He knew that it would probably be funnier if Doc had a few punch lines that made Johnny laugh out loud. And, it worked. One of the funniest impromptu bits ever.
Mr. Carson was the perfect straight man. And he knew it.
This may be the funniest moment ever in a show which always tickled my funny bone. I laugh myself silly every time I see this clip. "No."
He was the best I grew up watching Johnny Carson with my dad❤
40 someone years later, still hysterical, just love them
Love at 4:30 Carson reaches for the tissue box for Doc and him to wipe their eyes. You can see this is genuine and a unique bit of the Tonight Show where Johnny is actually laughing from the heart and not putting it on. Wonderful to watch.
I think when something was funny Carson was laughing from the heart. It happened often when he had great comedians on like Winters and Robin Williams.
I was 16 when this aired and I have never forgotten it. My girlfriend and I were watching and we literally fell on the floor with laughter!
Same age 📺❤️ classic times looking back now at 60 ✨✨✨ These were wonderful times 🎥
Every year on the eve of Thanksgiving, I come back and watch this - since it aired on that Wednesday night so long ago. It's the funniest bit of impromptu on the web and classic Carson. Doc throws Carson 6 or 7 times, and it's great to watch. Doc is naturally funny - I've seen him in concert and was rolling on the floor - and Carson knew when to shut up. NOBODY does late night this good anymore. It's all about pushing a political agenda and normalizing criminal behavior. Carson was all about entertaining people not dividing them.
Just to pile on: how was Johnny so much of a legend? He had "it". Not sure what it was, but he had it and none of his successors come close.
100%!
Amen. You said it..
So great! I miss Johnny.
Doc was ON FIRE. Love to see people make comedians/host laugh.
I watch this over and over 😅
Laugh out loud!
Who’s watching this two days before thanksgiving 2019?
Yep! And sharing to my FB page ...

I love watching this every time about a week before Thanksgiving
Funniest 5 minutes EVER in TV history.
Doc's best line: "I can't give you any...but I'll sell you some!"
It doesn't matter whether this was planned or spontaneous, it's still very, very, very funny.
I don't think any of the post monologue chats were scripted. They might have planned what the discussion would be though. But this is just comedy gold.
Clearly off the cuff.
@@robertstv8045 I agree.
I have this running in my head 24/7
Omg, I think I remember seeing this live.
This is good for the heart, soul, mind and body. It's so naturally funny. I watch it to see 2 men laugh at their own circumstances and share that with the rest of us in 1 of the funniest tv clips ever.
This is one of my favorite segments .I saw it years ago on an anniversary special . Clearly spontaneous and hilarious.
Never get tired of this. Lol😂
Doc was on fire, in the zone! He had perfect timing. Johnny asks if he is coming over, Doc quickly says "No."
Doc is still around. Great trumpet player.
funniest bit ever, doc was hittin 'em outta the park
The thing is, it wasn't a "bit," it was simply Johnny and Doc having a conversation in front of the cameras.
I've watched this a hundred times... Still brings tears of joy to my eyes... I know who is going to say what and I still laugh out loud...
Lucky to have had them , the magic of Carson , doc still with us, it’s covid all around me, lot of family gone, a hell of year , 2020 was from hell , actually, but can count on this priceless work of art to somewhat “cheer me up” loved you Johnny!RIP
