Doc pulled Johnny out of the "monologue bombs ditch". Tommy Newsome was funny when doc was gone. I just started watching these guys in the last few years, and boy I missed a lot. To have these videos now is a blessing.
@@mattjaitken I totally understand what you were saying. I was caught up in the world of work but growing up I remember hearing my parents laugh all the time. I was having problems sleeping my doctor told me to watch something funny at night so here I am watching all of Johnny Carson's reruns and I'm sleeping better and waking up with good humor in the morning. I guess you could say he's what the doctor ordered
Good point. That is one of the things that made Johnny special. He wanted other people to shine on his show, especially funny people. He did not need to get every laugh himself. He just wanted the show to be top notch, whether he got the laughs, or someone else did. He was secure in himself and his abilities. More evidence of this is how he had guest hosts sit in for him a lot. A lot of hosts would not do that. They would be afraid of the guest hosts being too good.
Johnny at his worst, was better than any of the current ones today at their best, and this is Johnny at his BEST. NOBODY even comes close today. This is conversational humor at it's best.
This is probably the funniest thing I've ever seen. I don't know if Doc Severinsen has a background in comedy or improv or anything but he played it exactly the right way to get maximum laughs

Late night hosts are now just political mouthpieces for owner, all they have to do is read teleprompter and smile . . . EVERY single night they bash Trump at least 3 times even if he has nothing to do with topic. Gets old and very redundant. No one cares what the owner of network thinks about politics and pushing it down our throat every evening just makes you turn channel.. We watch to laugh, not to be told how to vote and think. TV execs VERY out of touch with blue collar workers
I watch this ever year around Thanksgiving time; have probably viewed it 50 times and still laugh heartily every single time. I just love everything about it and how much fun these two have. Johnny knows when to let the other person talk and his laughter is priceless. Funny how he’s always straightening his tie and fiddling with the pencils, too. But you have to love that they laughed so hard, they needed Kleenex to wipe the tears. Wonderful stuff!
Comedy, GOOD Comedy, is all about the timing. Doc was a musician, so of course he knew just how to deliver. Even unscripted, he knew how to time the lines.
when men were men and knew how to have fun in an eloquent manner and knew that timing and response were an art form instead of making it all about themselves and tripping over their egos.........

No ….. this never gets old. These guys were the best …. But then again I am an old 67 year old man who with each passing day looks back fondly on a past I will never see again. That’s what comes with being on the back nine of life.
I just turned 56 and find myself doing the same thing. Things like Thanksgiving and Christmas were just so much different back then. When I watch the shows I grew up with it gives me those pains of nostalgia that I know will never happen again. Perhaps that's just how it's supposed to be. Enjoy what you can, when you can.
Love at 4:30 Carson reaches for the tissue box for Doc and him to wipe their eyes. You can see this is genuine and a unique bit of the Tonight Show where Johnny is actually laughing from the heart and not putting it on. Wonderful to watch.
Johnny Carson was not a show, it was therapy. He provided an escape from reality. You can't say that about any show anymore. He could have been brilliant that night or could have sucked that night. You didn't give a damn. He was worth every second of your time. I too dearly miss Johnny and the gang. I just wish future generations just "get" Johnny Carson.
I'm 24 and was born in 1996. And this is the funniest stuff ever. I've watched so much old Johnny Carson with Don Rickles and Rodney dangerfield, George Burns, the list goes on. I'm embarrassed that we have Fallon and Kimmel. They are so boring. This looked like a fun genuine time. I love watching old TV shows. Like Fish, Original chips. This stuff is just humor. And of course Carnac the magnificent with Ed McMahon.
Still one of the absolute funniest spur of the moment conversations in tv history! Doc was always good for a laugh, and Carson knew when to let another person take the lead. He was a brilliant comedian and interviewer.....he had perfect timing!
In the parlance of comedy, I've heard it said that Johnny was the unequivocal master of the _pivot._ He could go from being the "gag" man to the "straight" man in a moment's notice, and then back again, and the transitions were seamless. No one else came even close to his mastery of the art.
@ Peter Mio. The talk about Thanksgiving between Carson and Doc Severinson was even funnier than the famous George Gobel line about a tuxedo and a brown pair a shoes because it was 6 minutes of hysterically funny conversation, whereas the George Gobel funny line as funny as it is and was , was just a brief moment!
The comic timing of Doc answering Johnny's invitation is so perfect! " Well, can you come? " " No." Hilarious! And the final " I can't give you any but I'll sell you some! " Brilliant!!
Watched him perform a few years ago in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico, where he had a home at the time. His musical talent remained as great as ever.

Johnny knew quickly that this conversation was going to be gold, and played off of Doc marvelously. Notice how natural the conversation is, and the laughs surely followed. That could never happen today as the late night hosts today would go for the laughs more than the conversation.
Just hysterical....I love how Johnny and Doc are just bouncing off each other, the witty comments and banter. Doc is just really cracking Johnny up, great stuff!

I never saw this when originally aired, so the first time I saw it was during the 18th Anniversary show the very next year. I had just bought my first VCR and had taped it. Rolling on the floor laughing when I did see it. The old tape is now gone, but the clip is here now. TV will never be the same. If there's a comedy outlet in Heaven, these guys will be there all the time.
Lucky to have had them , the magic of Carson , doc still with us, it’s covid all around me, lot of family gone, a hell of year , 2020 was from hell , actually, but can count on this priceless work of art to somewhat “cheer me up” loved you Johnny!RIP
That's so amazing! I remember seeing that segment when the show first aired and thought it was some of the funniest material I had ever heard. I still find it hilarious. As it happens, I met Doc Severinsen back when I was in college. The Tonight Show Band came to the school to do a concert, which was fabulous, and some of us music majors went back stage afterwards and met Doc, Tommy Newsom, and Eddie Shaughnessy, the drummer. They couldn't have been nicer and made the evening extra special for me and my friends. I'll never forget them.
Severinsen, this Thanksgiving season, is scheduled to play at the Foo Foo Festival Nov. 10 in Pensacola, Florida, with the local Civic Band. Not performing quite as much as he used to, but still rolling at age 91. I bet this comes up at some point that night.
I think Johnny's laugh improved over time. When he was young, it was kind of nasally and repetitive. As he got older, it was basically the same laugh, but heartier and more melodic, seeming to come more from the diaphragm (as the singing instructors I've seen on TV would say).
I was in high school during the late 70's. I remember waking up to the laughter of my dad, who had a night shift, as he was relaxing after work, watching the great ones.
Remember seeing this in first broadcast. Doc was just tearing i during the Holiday !t up and Carson loved every minute. This was such a delight back in the day

Absolute classic. Never get tired watching this. Back in the days when stars were stars. None of the garbage on TV today comes even remotely close to matching the great Johnny Carson and Doc Severinsen. The sense of humor between Johnny and Doc is priceless.
I’ve watched this so many times. Johnny re-ran this several times on his year-end shows because it was such a classic highlight. One of the most unexpectedly brilliant moments in television history.
I saw this the night it aired, and I could not believe what I was seeing... ...and the first guest hadn't even come out yet. Here is just another example of why the Carson "TONIGHT" show was must-see TV, on a nightly basis.
I watched this at least once a month and it gets better and better simply because they don't do stuff like this anymore, it is pure magic, god I miss this show
One of the greatest moments in the golden era of television. Don’t know how many times I’ve seen this but it never gets old!
Doc is still with us.. So many have passed away from the show. Fred DeCordava, Tommy, Ed, Johnny, and many of the stars who appeared on the show.
Doc was just plain on FIRE during this bit. It's not often you see Johnny so flustered and out-of-control laughing. Great 6 mins of comedy.
I think they may have gotten into the gin a little early that night lol
One of the reasons it’s so funny is that it’s real banter ! Unscripted dialogue between two professional entertainers !
I’ve seen this at least a hundred times! It’s unscripted tv at its best! Carson always made room for spontaneous comedy.
Doc was upstaging him and Johnny didn't even care. One of the funniest ever.
