    Doc Severinsen never received the credit he deserved as a comedic foil, guest announcer, and side-kick. He could hold his own with the best. Thanks for sharing.

      That is the point that you just made . Not only were they great musicians , there were a handful of guys in the orchestra , that were great at comedy .

      @@josephforest7605 The NBC Orchestra was comprised of some of the greatest musicians/entertainers of their generation. They came of age during a time when live performances were the only venue. Radio was king. There was no internet, cable, and television was in its infancy. Thanks for sharing.

      That's what sucked when Leno took over and that is no more Doc and the band .I never watched an entire episode of Jay Leno .

      It was a different Era. There were few outlets, and musicans had to travel from gig to gig. Many of the NBC Orchestra members played with some of the greatest big bands: Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Stan Kenton to name a few.

      Many members of the NBC Orchestra played in Count Basie's, Duke Ellington's, and Charlie Barnett's bands, just to name a few. lol

      Yes, it’s great. No question. Johnny will always be the king of late night. But Colbert and Kimmel put on excellent shows today.

      @@FredLord-sp4ym Back in the day, Republicans and Democrats were largely moderates who leaned right or left. Today, we have a Republican Party that is fascist and active destroyers of fundamental American values that they beg to be made fun of. GOP politicians are some of the dumbest, most ridiculous human beings in U.S. history and make low-hanging fruit for any comedian. These mostly middle-of-the-road comics look like commies to white nationalists.

      If you haven’t seen the documentary about Doc done a few years ago, go find it. I saw it on PBS. Not only a great musician, but a great human being. He is obsessed with inspiring young musicians.

    World class ensemble and they were paid peanuts on this show. Last of the great Swing bands. Most of the guys like Ed Shawnesy, and Tommy Newsome are dead, except Doc. Such joyful music and talent.❤

      Back in the 1970's when the show ran ninety minutes, local stations that did not sell alotted commercial inventory (which was rare), the "More to Come" bumpers would play longer.

    Damn I miss Johnny. And Doc…most people don’t know Doc is one of the greatest trumpet players ever. And he’s one of the greatest guys ever. There was a documentary about Doc done a few years ago. Fabulous. Go find it.

      Mr. Severinsen worked at perfecting his Craft every day, regardless of how many years he had been playing. Each performance deserved his best and he gave it, and then some.

    I had the Doc and Tonight Show band LP that came out in the '80s. Wow! What an album that was. Makes me want to track down a copy of it.

    Wow, were we ever so lucky; 5 nights a week of this talent, and the memories that have been saved. 2.5 minutes illustrated here beats the ever loving hell out of any Super Bowl Half time........ I do mean Lucky.......

    Man, for those of us that grew up with Johny, and this great - great band!!.. it didn't get much better than this - Baby, these were the days! Social media & the internet sucked - oh for the days of watching Johny entertain us late at night

    Pure Class! And think that Johnny kept all those great musicians hired and working!!!! You can tell how much he loved them. I remember seeing a "60 minute" interview with him where had a drum set in his house and they got him to play a bit. He loved and admired Buddy Rich.
    Yeah, I'm soon to be 70, but I remember in college, after studying a few of us who meet in one guys room and drink some beer watching Johnny, Ed, & Doc. So I guess I am really a old.

    You know, I do miss that sound... I believe Johnny said on one of the last shows that the Tonight Show Band was the last working big band on television. Never heard any better.

      Actually, I believe you can still see on TV, big band jazz at Lincoln Center, probably still lead by Wynton Marsalis…another of the trumpet greats. But that’s not a regular thing.

    As mentioned World Class Musicians. Now, sadly it gone. Ed on drums was as good as Buddy Rich. Doc, what do you say? The entire band worked other gigs when not on the show!
    I'm old, and miss this stuff!
