Fr JOSIAH TRENHAM - What Masculinity REALLY means

  • A conversation on the connection between masculinity and virtue with Fr Josiah Trenham. Fr Josiah starts in a surprising place to illustrate how far off we have gone from the path given the role of feminism, looking at shoulder pads in women's suits. He then goes on to illustrate a beautiful example of how men can lead with integrity and love. We particularly investigate four areas for the development of masculine virtue:
    1. Participation in the divine services of the Church centered around the Eucharist
    2. Sports, athletics, and military service
    3. Marriage
    4. Fellowship in brotherhood

The ultimate career is the homemaker, caretaker of a husband, and the mother of the next generation. it is a lot of work, and the only profession that is equally as honorable is- any profession that is intended to support and protect the first one.
C.S. Lewis even says "All other careers exist for one purpose only - and that is to support the ultimate career. ”

As I hear these two men talk about masculinity this way, I'm sensing a whole new part of life that I hadn't even realized was there. I feel a mix of desperation and hope towards it. Desperation because it's so far removed from me, because of how much I've disregarded this entire aspect of my purpose, I have not even begun to become a real man, but I also feel hope because I now know about this great treasure that would greatly contribute towards saving my soul from its miserable state, and I can start taking my first steps towards it. Thank you Father Josiah, and thank you brother Paul.

Don’t feel desperation bro. The beauty is that God’s love power is literally infinite. We can’t comprehend it. When you become a vessel of the Lord, you have this infinite power on your side. Those feelings of despair come entirely from the enemy. Many saints warn against those feelings and remind us to focus on God and His infinite love for us.

@@True_Strength Thank you for your response brother. I hope that I will one day be so powerful that I can choose not to feel desperation.
In the last few months I've learned that desperation (as well as sadness) is as much a sin as anger is. In the same way that I am able to decide not to be angry, but to be patient and forgiving instead, I need to be trained, to be able to decide not to be desperate, but to be hopeful and courageous instead.
I am not there yet. Please pray for me, if you would.

This made me cry. I am the victim of a divorce, my ex-husband was once a good man in the army but he became lost after he was chaptered out medically and he started abusing me. Then my mother died. And my father is a very weak man. But I came home during my awful divorce, to take care of mom in her last days and then take care of my dad. So I have been for 3 years. My dad’s weakness caused him to be addicted horribly to pills and for 3 years he has been putting me through hell. But I’m still enduring. I just keep praying.

I appreciate this talk. True masculinity does flow from the Eucharist. I stopped dating because I wasn’t finding true masculinity. I’m honestly still trying to figure out how to recognize it in an earlier phase. So many men have learned the right buzz words, but if you really stick to boundaries and test it, they get upset. One guy even insinuated I deceived him and seemed upset that he wasted a month talking to me. I’m just focusing God now and I pray a lot to the Blessed Mother to give me motherly wisdom. And I’d genuinely like to be healed if there’s just something in me that’s attracting weak men. I’m thankful that I’ve dodged a lot of bullets so far.

I'm sorry you're struggling to find someone. I'd like to offer you advice that has helped me in my marriage. Sometimes too picky about another's struggle can hinder your progress. This reminds me of a Saint that I read about once who I try to keep in mind when I struggle with patience in my relationship. She was a Holy woman and married a pagan man to please her father. He was abusive and she had every right in Christian life to leave him, but she chose to stay instead, and lead him by her own example. She prayed to God, humbled herself before him and her husband, loved him for all of his weaknesses and forgave him. She helped him fight his battle against his demons. Her life set an example for him. He saw her in her unshakable joy and love for God and was inspired by her, learned to love and respect her and he converted. I say this not to condone abuse or encourage women to stay in abusive relationships because that can also be unchristian in itself especially with children involved, (This was a holy woman, remember) but to point out that we all are corrupted by evil, where one is blessed another is weak and vice versa. We're here to share our blessings with each other and lift each other up with love. In the end, we're all made in His image it matters not who you decide to marry, but the mercy and love you share with them together with God. So avoid your big red flags, but try to not be too selective. After all, if he's so perfect how will you justify your own sinfulness?

    • @Totustuus822
      @Totustuus822 2 месяца назад +2

@@miagracev I appreciate where this is coming from, but it’s just not solid advice. If there is anything you want to be picky about, it’s the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with and who you might have children with. You don’t marry someone to justify your own sin. There’s a fate worse than being alone and that’s to be chained to a weak man. I know that you meant this in a very kind and helpful way though and I appreciate the sentiment. God bless.

11:17 absolutely. I'm so happy to find someone with the same thoughts on this. I am always telling my son the importance of struggle. For instance, lifting weights. People will think of a man as being very masculine because of his muscularity, but this is a subversion of the masculine principle. As the church is the bride of Christ, performing services, movements and acts of worship, it is the body as a temple which facilitates movement of the spirit in corporeal reality. Muscularity can become a byproduct of this, but the masculine act is in the domination of one's own animal nature and irrational impulses. Men today only understand a degenerate form of masculinity dependent on the body and its functions, its pleasures. True masculinity is based in the intellect.
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
    ~2 Corinthians 10:5

Your comment has some very great points. Especially, the mastery over self, i.e, the carnal mind and lust of the eyes and flesh. Also, note there's no male or female in Christ.
The idea of masculine and feminine are man made. Certainly, we are all to emulate the characteristics and qualities of Christ. Kindness, gentleness, wisdom, understanding, patience, forgiveness, mercy etc., do not look different in the flesh of one sex or the other.
Reproductive organs serve the purpose of propagation and are limited. No propagation in eternity. They neither marry nor are given in marriage but are like the angels.
Angels do not have reproductive organs.

Thank you for sharing this conversation with us. I will say, I appreciate Fr Trenham's "punch to the chest" greeting, however it is important for us to always consider what we do not know. For example: I was raised to believe the importance of a firm handshake. My handshake is very important to me and not something offered lightly (no pun intended). Last year, I fractured a bone in my right hand. To this day, when I shake another man's hand, it causes pain in my hand- a reminder of my foolish outburst of anger which caused the fracture. The point is, it made me realize that I had never considered the possibility that I may not know I was causing pain to the man whose hand I was shaking (especially if he were an older fellow). Now I try to be more discerning before I squeeze the life out of someone's hand. Showing manly affection is good an all, but consider this quote: "There is nothing stronger than true gentleness. And nothing more gentle than true strength." God showed us this by His own example.

From my perspective in Appalachia, some men are untethered from God, from a moral compass and therefore very confused about how to interact with women and what it means to be masculine. In fact, it would be interesting to do some street interviews with men and see what you hear if asking, “What does it mean to you to be masculine?”

Yes I feel this is the clarity the world desperately needs right now, and it's amazing to see that in these dark times more and more people are coming back- and seeing the value again of a Christian life, myself included.
As a new Christian myself (2 years since I said; yes, i Want to give my live to you my lord, in prayer) and searching for my community with a big interest for Orthodoxy since a few months, it's really helpfull and inspiring to follow your journey and learn from the insights you get in conversations like this.
And i find the idea of doing pilgrimages great! Because where I live in Germany there's also no german speaking Orthodox church anywhere close.. I guess it would be a good first step to getting to now the Orthodox church better in real life.
It would definitely be great to have some other young serious (orthodox) Christian men closeby to pray and support one another in our difficulties in life..
I'm interested how you found your way to the orthodox church Paul, is there a video where you share your path to orthodoxy extensively?

Powerful. And needed. Not just personally but on a wide scale.
To be blunt and provocative however.. when I hear the names of the most prominent leaders of every single socio-cultural group that is subversive to the fabric of our earthly and spiritual existence…
    Like Betty Friedan in feminism;
I can’t help but think on catholic E. Michael Jones writings on things like “the giuish revolutionary spirit” and how addressing any ill in society needs a proper vocabulary first, yet without identifying or addressing the spirit of those seemingly at the forefront of a great many wrongs… we leave the subject of confronting the perpetrator nearly impossible to do.
The revolutionary spirit which rejects the logos and his order on earth can be confronted in the church, but certainly as the pope said “modern Europe is a desert of godlessness.”
In such a desert does appealing to the wider morality and tradition of a nation not require mainstream, popular and public media?
But what if thst media is by and large directed by members of a certain tribe. One who’s sacred books blaspheme Christ.
Does it not make sense that their anti-christic, revolutionary view would be the one foisted upon our people at every turn?
How can we hope to even begin to address such immorality and confusion, much less confront those at the lead of if… if we don’t properly name them?
    I mean…
If the separation laws of hebrews and gentiles is gone.. yet the Talmud blasphemes Christ and demands very strict segregation/anti-gentile type cultures,..
Do we not have one singular group,
Defined literally by the Pharisees, woe to them, that can serve as nothing other than anti-god/anti-Christ forces to all gentiles? And who would literally be doing the devils work?

Being wife of 30 years, raising children, and my experiences from my father to uncles, grandfathers, church men, worldly men-- well, im deeply saddened. They all have very little in common with the men God created. Passivity or over agressiveness, both being raised entitled to being treated, sadly, almost like children. Little to no accountability within the world if godly men. I always believed that men had man parts to their tool box. They , most, are physically and emotionally stronger. They are created to be our protectors, providers-- the frontline for the family and the church.
The love Jesus Christ has for His beloved mother-- this love, honor, respect has rarely been taught by parents towards eachother, especially men towards their wives... snd how that trickles down to strengthening the children. When our soninlaw asked for our daughter's hand, I as her mother asked him if he would devote his love as caring for her like a beautiful flower. Tend to her, nurture her, respect her gifts (intelligence, her position as a mother, and Holy Spirit gifts that are given to her to help their family and their world)....
Im sorry, but all the men in my life have taken the beauty of each female and lived with the entitlement that the female's entire being is what they give to the men or how they make the man feel.
Not one of the men im my life-- relatives and church brothers-- have ever shown the godly position of why God created men. When a woman is truly loved, she responds like a beautiful flower. She does not wilt, she grows stronger. Husbands are not created to be a dictator, but kings who battle for their kingdom. They are their wives and family's covering!! The world will zero in on what we leave vulnerable. Evil men will marry our daughters bc of passive fathers. Evil people will take advantage of our businesses. Wolves in sheep's clothing will target the weak in the church!
Im sorry if i am wrong here, but i believe i can not fight off evil men and people as well as my husband can IF HE STANDS prepared where God puts him. It is a work if being a true servant. As a mother of adult children and now grandchildren, mt entire mothering and wife goals has always been to nurture and strengthen my family sacrifically bc i was motivated for love-- beyond my comfort. Facing conflict did not prevent me from protecting my family and business. I had confidence to face it bc I knew God was with me bc He is not passive. He is proactive. Even calls Himself a man of war (exodus).. Men are not to always fight physically. Im not saying that. But, my experiences has been that all thr men in my life coward to Conflict, thus evil saw we were wide open to be easily attacked. Evil targeted me bc i was the greater threat. But as the wife, it is NOT the same as the Man/husband wearing thr Armor of God!! Our precious daughter married a man who believed he was entitled to being a dictator, not a husband. Abuse her then go to church as a wolf in sheep's clothing. He saw her and his children as how they made him feel and look. She was an object. He broke his promise to us to tend to her heart . He had zero honor for her pregancies. Resented her time with the babies.
His own mother-- she supported this terrible shameful behavior bc she believed his wife was meant to serve his wishes. His own mother saw his wife as an object soley for his wishes.
My father needed fun, needed to live life like a free for all. If these men receive any conversation from their wives to change these terrible self- centered behaviors, these men respond with very covert excuses and gaslighting.
How can we stop raising spoiled men-children is the GREAT question which NEEDS A GREAT ANSWER!!
Im sorry to share these truths, but it deeply hurts my heart that even in the church... church men leaders, are they standing in for thr weak, the abused, the wife suffering bc her husband is emotionally abusive? Before we were Orthodox, our Pastor was a true soldier of God. If he was still in our lives, none of the absuses our daughter has suffered would have happened as terrible as it has come to pass. Her husband would without question, get a clear message that he must stop. And, it would not have just been thr Pastor of our church, the deacons would have went with him to speak honorably speak to her husband, first with peace. Second, with more peace added with manly emphasis. Third time-- out Pastor and the deacons would have escorted him to leave.
Today," evil prevails bc good men do nothing"...
Breaks my heart bc we are living in very heavy demonic times against God's true!!! Men, put on the Armor of God! Learn, practice, study and pray how to wear it. NOW

I am trying to hear what they're saying in this discussion with an open mind, but it's difficult not to wonder what he would have to say to women who are treated as you describe. And to men who would take the first part of the discussion about the role of women as a sanction to treat their wives like subjects.

@user-yt3kd7cm7p If parents would emulate the beauty of true love's reflection of honoring the mother , (husband's love your wives as Christ loves the church... Jesus did not come to be a dictator, but to serve... He washed the disciple's feet)... more wives and mothers would bloom spiritually, emotionally, mentally... Problem with some men ( not all as my husband is a good, kind strong in Wearing the Armor of God) mary for their selves. Dangerous to mary bc of what someone's role we think they should be for us. Medi distorts this. The distortion swings far to either side. Christ's precious mother, was is the example to all sons to honor their parents. We dont all have precious mothers, especially none like Mary, but Jesus showed us how to honor our mothers. She shows us all how to obey and live holy. Whether husband or wife, we are both examples of godliness; serving, honoring, caring and sacrificing for one another. This is fullfilled through love. Without true love for the other person, there is none of this. Men must serve through love, women must do the same. First, in the family, then out in the world.

Its very interesting to be a Christian and to treat wives like subjects. Jesus' life put a beautiful light upon His way He honored His mother....the women he dearly loved all points to serving them. Caring for them, helping them. Especially in Orthodoxy, where we see Mary for who she is; through Christ's eyes ( as much as we are humanly able).

As an orthodox man i am learning Christian morality which has been radically different from the worlds. Sometimes i hear clergy speak from the world, let me give an example; "It is always sinful to take a life." This reminds me of when i used to be a morale absolutist, influenced by naturalism and libertarian ideology. St Paul clearly states that "all things are lawful" but he says "not all things are useful," Fr Trenham points out that so long as we center Christ in our hearts and conform to his ideas about what is greatness and what is masculinity this is good. If we do all things with Christ enthrones, we do well. St Paul indeed says "Whether you eat or don't, do all things to the Glory of God." The point here is, from my understanding, that actions are not inherently evil, all things are lawful, what matters is our hearts, our intentions.
If we are willing to lay down our lives to protect the innocent as a soldier, then taking life is sometimes unavoidable. Does he sin? To say this is akin to a violent and cruel murder is abhorrent and ridiculous. Some will cry out and say to take a life is a violation against the image of God and is always flawed, others say that our intentions can lead us astray. The former is nonsense, for man has been given the authority in Christ to make decions that bare responsibility. such as protecting his familly and loved ones from those who seek to do evil. We are free to, as Peter did, protect by the sword if we must. Ah they will say Peter was rebuked for using force, No. No Peter wasnt wrong to cut the ear of the man who attempted to arrest Christ because he used physical force, but because Christ came to die, even unto death on the cross. Peter here was standing in the way of Christ path to the cross, Christ didnt tell peter using force was wrong. Though he would come to say "Get behind me Satan" when Peter tryied to stop Christs road to the Cross.
Where the Greeks sinful when they freed themselves from the Muslim yoke in their war of liberation WW1? Was St Constantine wrong to pull down Pagan temples and defend his borders with Christian Soldiers? How do the clergy explain these points? I whiteness paradox time and time again in Orthodoxy. How can salvation be both a process and a single act, or how can Christ take on a human nature being that he is God who cannot change? Time and time again we see paradoxical mystical events that we fail to understand. How can it be that we are taught that Taking a life is always sinful yet taking a life is celebrated in our church, the soldier saints!!
It is good to be lead to the cross to die if this is Gods will, like St Ignatius of Antioch! but it is also good to take up the sword to protect, like St George! So here again paradox, for you are given by God different ways to honor Him. So even today when we see clergy rebuke the war in Russia, do not be quick to judge, what do you know of their intentions?

You cannot love your enemy and cut short their time of repentance. War is the greatest sin, as St. Sophrony wrote.

    • @Stsebastian8900
      @Stsebastian8900 Год назад +1

@@rf9547 To understand what the greatest sin is, we must first know what the greatest love is. So that we can then look to inverse it. As it is, we know what the greatest of love is, for Christ told us, "their is no greater love than this, to die for ones friends." Thus it seems to me, the greatest sin is not war, but it is to be unwilling to die for ones friend. Since war gives opportunity to save ones friends from persecution, tyranny and hate, war is something which can actually be a platform for the greatest of love. St Sophrony is a authority, yes. He is not however the Chorus of Orthodoxy and St Cyril of Alexandria says that "in public we must draw the sword to protect our brothers less we give them over to renouncing their faith."

☦ About Holy Communion and the cvd troubles: Not long after i was received into the Orthodox Church, a friend told me a story from a number of years before.
He told me the name of the priest but I will not type it here.
It seems that a young man visiting an Orthodox church, went to Holy Confession, and then told the priest that he hoped to receive the Holy Gifts, but that he needed to tell the priest that he had a communicable disease, and he asked that he be allowed to receive Holy Communion, but to approach the chalice last.

Which he did, and eventually was removed for, as evidence was presented by several witnesses. But the law in California is such that: a) anyone can be removed for domestic violence regardless of gender - as long as there is evidence of said crime. b) either parent can and will be awarded custody of children regardless of gender, so long as proven to be safe and non violent towards the children. c) Child support and alimony are based on income, regardless of gender. Yes i understand it was ecouraged and molded by evil, but wasnt there some unjust oppression happening to inspire women to reject their roles? I thought (among women at least) the intent was for improvement of quality of life (although it was a failure). Im not speaking in reguards to money and economy and such, but was femininity really ever valued? Or was it always viewed as weak and insignificant? Healthcare and mental care was terrible for them because there was no one in law or medicine fighting for their health. Many men dominated over them and lived whatever lives they liked leaving the woman to suffer and she would be shunned if she tried to escape. I know all this is unchristian, but it was the norm, right?

      @ManiphestoMen  2 месяца назад

Fr Josiah does not read these comments - not even on his own channel, much less on ours. Unjust oppression is something that all groups of humans have experienced - women too. The response of feminists was to reject the beautiful and unique aspects of the feminine and to try and make women more like men, competing with men for power, status, wealth, etc. This means that women are increasingly pressured to reject their natural essence and to become something they are not. There are plenty of biblical stories where women are valued and appreciated for their natural femininity.

Which look at fruits of the spirit in Galatians chapter 5, gentleness, meekness, etc. King David, a humble shepherd boy. Look at Isaiah, very gentle and very meek. So much mean kids teased him for being bald. 🤩Then G-d sent bears to kill his oppressors. Look at Jesus, enduring so much.

I have heard that we should always stand up when a priest or deacon or Bishop enters a room to honor their headship why do we stand up for women? it seems to me women should be standing up for men.

What about women that are part of christ and follow what Trenham says. Are they also masculine? It's a paradox, his words dont add up.

Yes, women can also be manly - and there is nothing wrong with that. Many female martyrs were praised by the church fathers for their manliness. Its adds up perfectly, but stop being so occupied with what Fr Josiah says - all he is doing is repeating the teachings of the Orthodox Church. If he makes you upset or confused, then probably a good idea to find another source.

In Saint John Chrysostoms letters to Saint Olympia, he exports her to have manly courage. It is almost a play on words since in Greek, the word for man (ándras) and the Greek word for Courage (andreía) are very similar. Therefore, the word man or manly has the idea of Courage built right into it.
This does not in anyway preclude the possibility of women having this virtue. Indeed, women should. Many of the lives of Female Martyrs also describe the women as showing manly perseverance, or defending the faith in a manful way. There is just a special emphasis on men having courage and being more courageous in general, but everyone needs courage in this life, especially to be saved.

@taranmurray7046 just because you had martyrs that happened to be female doesnt mean anywoman today can take credit for that. Is like me taking credit for all the great men in history which outnumber the great women 100thousand to 1. My point is the masculine component has to be what women lack by definition i.e. striving for greatness. Women could careless about that.

Milunka Savić Gligorević was a Serbian heroine of the Balkan Wars and the First World War, a sergeant in the Second Regiment of the Serbian Army "Knjaz Mihailo", as well as the most decorated woman in the history of warfare. She received many decorations, including two French orders of the Legion of Honor and a medal "Milos Obilic". She is the only woman in the world who has been awarded the French War Cross with Golden Palm. She applied for the first time as a man and only after a year when she was wounded did it become known that she was a woman.
Don't talk much about women in war and in the army, at least not in Europe. In Europe, there were thousands of women warriors in World War I and II who were real heroes, side by side with men.
And just about the endurance of the pain ... please, if you felt only 5 minutes of labor pains, you men would go crazy.

No, but that we women are good or bad fighters just like men. Women in Europe have long proven this in various wars on the European continent that have been raging for centuries. Just like now in the current war between Russia and Ukraine, where hundreds of Ukrainian women are on the battlefield.@@ManiphestoMen

@@anaana-hx4sg the bible is full of females who played vital roles in wars and conflicts. Their virtues are often different from typical masculine virtues but in many ways more admirable.
The current trend of insisting that women can equal men in masculine traits seems a little silly to me, and risks undermining the beauty and value of femininity.

Christ was born in Mary's womb. She is the "Theotokos" - the "Mother of God". Understand that Christ, the Godman actually came from her flesh. The whole of human history led up to the incarnation through her. She was pure and without sin, the greatest of all the saints of the Christian church. Joseph was a devout man, but not at all at the level of Mary.
