This brings me joy but I would also like to ask about your experience. I am an Australian inquirer who will begin catechism soon. However, my heart is with Japan and know that I will move there in the future. When I heard that Japan had its own established orthodox church it made me even more sure and was able to see so many connections God has been putting together. Where do you attend church? How is it there? Are you Japanese yourself? I am visiting again in December and will visit a church while I'm there.

"Nicholas (Kasatkin), Equal-to-the-Apostles, Archbishop of Japan, born Ivan Dmitrovich Kasatkin (Russian: Иоанн Димитриевич Касаткин; 13 August [O.S. 1 August] 1836 - 16 February 1912) was a Russian Orthodox priest, monk, and bishop. He introduced the Eastern Orthodox Church to Japan."

      @@Daniel_McDougall Christ is risen!
Firstly, I recommend getting catechised in Australia as you’d need to be fluent in Japanese to receive the catechism here. Thankfully I was baptized along with my mum, who is Japanese (I’m half Japanese) so she was translating a lot during the catechism. Without her help it may have been impossible, but thank God that she was there for the entire process
Living in Japan is great, albeit difficult, and for the weak willed and ungodly, rather bleak and depressing. It’s hard enough for the natives living here with their horrific work culture, and endless social issues. It’s also a great country in many ways. If you are a foreigner living in Tokyo, you’ll probably do fine if you get a high paying job. As a lowly English teacher like myself, be prepared for humiliation and to get treated like an unnecessary scourge on the supreme heel of the elegant Japanese boot, that is the land of Japan. As a foreigner, there’s a good chance these people will never accept you as one of their own. Being Japanese is a religion, essentially. But thank God for the Orthodox Church, where there are people from all nations gathered together to worship the One True God, Lord of all creation, Jesus Christ. The entire service in the Japanese Church is in Classical Japanese from the Meiji era, so be prepared to not understand much, but use it as motivation to study and learn the Divine Liturgy in depth.
So if you’re a person who is looking for ease and comfort, go elsewhere. This certainly isn’t the place for you. But if you’re ready to be humbled, to truly be in exile as Abraham in a distant land, and to grow spiritually, as a soldier, and eventually a child of God, then this is the spot. I can only speak from my own experiences. This land can make or break people, and most often, break people. These are a hedonistic, sinful, and proud people, and it’s easy to fall into that trap as a foreigner living here, especially for young guys. Don’t expect that to change anytime soon.
You wanted an answer, so I have spoken honestly. Sorry if I stepped on the toes of your dream. Forgive me, and the humble opinion of a lowly cretin. May the peace of God be with you always

Btw to all orthodox Christians in US, in the middle of XX century a Great orthodox saint lived in US - Ioann Shankhaisky. He made a lot of miracles and was a pure great person. If you do not know about him find any information about him to strength you faith. He was Russian, lived in US, and to my mind he is a symbol of true common values, I.e. love, peace, faith, which are uniting Russia and US

    • @grigorylugovoy6778
      @grigorylugovoy6778 22 дня назад +4

Father Josiah said that American elites do not understand Russia. That 30 000 charges were built and that the new generation was born. As 35 yo growing after the collapse of USSR I can comment the following. Though my mother was very religious person, not Orthodoxy affected me but US. Perestroika was a time when we admired US. We watched Hollywood movies, wear US apparel and Nikes, there were queues to McDonalds. My generation was much closer to US than to our Orthodoxy roots despite the rise of Christianity.
After the Ukraine war became it is a great shift in Russians mindset. We see that US treats us (I mean our generation) as terrorists and not as someone who actually thought that we were “brothers”. And now, as well as Ukrainians, we are searching the new identity and i like this process actually.
There are much more people in churches now. Sure not because of “identity search” but because we want to find the word of truth and truly support and not propaganda which manipulate us from East and West. People want peace and find it in church

Father Josiah cursed Lenin and Stalin. On the one hand, I agree because they destroyed thousands of churches and killed thousands of Christian’s. On the other hand, I read a lot of biography books of Russian saints in XX century and for many of them all that horror they came through strengthen their faith to sanctity. So it is all in hands of God

This was so good to hear. I've been spending time on X these past couple of weeks, and I just realized that my comments were getting angrier and angrier. I would never engage with anyone like that in real life. And how arrogant is it of me to think that someone that doesn't even know me cares what I think about every single little thing. I'm not doing it for them, I'm doing it for myself. From now on, if I comment it will be to say hi, and give thanks to the uploader for creating such good content. So, greetings from North Macedonia. And thank you for sharing this wonderful conversation. ❤

@taliatut That, my friend, is a sad statement. Both East and West suffered from the misunderstood schism. Certain charisms of the West did not migrate over to the East and vice versa. Father Trenham addressed this sad loss a few years ago, which became my introduction to his ministry as well as others. You're supposed to pray with humility for your fellow Christians, especially separated family members.

  • @farmergiles1065
    @farmergiles1065 Месяц назад +6

To begin, I must say how enlightening and thoughtful this discussion was - a blessed departure from the social media norm.
I had the idea of commenting on a remark of Mr. Poulos, and hope it won't be taken as just an opportunity to pick a nit. It's about pushing away electronics, just refusing to learn about it, use it, "and go into the woods and wait for it all to go away". Yes, I recognize the reaction in some people. But I am in some ways like that. I have an advanced degree in Computer Science, and spent 17 years in the industry. I found it a horrible experience working in an environment that I consider so deeply superficial, all about the making of money.
But my comment is not a diatribe. I use my cell phone - to have conversations, and to text. I turn everything else that I can off: no financial transactions, no Internet there (I use my computer), no GPS, etc. RUclips is the only social media I use. And my basic reason is not fear of technology, nor a desire to retreat, nor a rejection of new benefits it might have. It is self-preservation.
As you age, learning becomes more time-consuming and takes a greater portion of one's energy. At the rate things change these days, it is not worth my time and effort to learn some things. I also find the newer technologies to be pests: sources of interruption and distraction. I cannot hear myself think if they are around. And most significantly, they prevent me from pulling my focus together so that 1) I can pray, 2) I can do what is needed, 3) I can read and learn, 4) I can think over (and pray over) what I have acquired, 5) I can have unbroken time with family or friends, and more - not in that order. As a Christian, I seek God, and therein a stable life, well-balanced, lived with a healthy perspective. I just can't see these technologies providing much that is of substance, but I can certainly see them acting as a drain on my resources - money, yes, but more importantly, time, energy, and mental health.
I have weighed the stuff in the balance, and found it to be wanting. But I am trying to reach for the goal wherein I shall not want.
I hope my words have something additional to offer. God bless.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth and of all things visible and invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from Heaven, and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man. And He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried. And the third day He arose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father; and He shall come again with glory to judge the living and the dead; Whose Kingdom shall have no end.
And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, Who proceeds from the Father; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spoke by the prophets.
In one Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I am still a grave sinner Fr. Josiah so please keep me in your prayers. I struggle with Lust, Pride, Gluttony, and Sloth. But I've been getting much better with most of these. Psalm 10 - A Spiritual Psalter - Saint Ephraim the Syrian
O Christ my Savior, before your glory, I will proclaim all my inequities and profess your infinite mercies, which You pour upon me according to your loving-kindness.
From the womb of my mother I began to trouble You, for I have completely neglected Your grace, because I have disregarded my life.
O my Master, through the abundance of Your mercies You have looked upon all my evil doings with patience and care.
Your grace has raised my head, although daily it is brought low through my sins.
Wicked habits ensnare me as a trap, and I delight in being held.
I descend to the depths of wickedness and I take joy in this.
Daily the foe provides me new bonds, because he observes how this diversity of shackles delights me.
On account of my being chained to my own lusts I should grieve and mourn in disgust and shame.
But still more horrible is that I chain myself with the bonds that the foe puts on me, and I kill myself with the passions that delight him.
Even though I understand how awful these bonds are, I conceal them under a regal countenance from everybody who might see them.
I seem to be clothed in the splendid apparel of reverence, but my soul is caught up with deprived ideas.
In front of everyone, I am devout, but within I am full of all forms of filth.
My conscience condemns me through all of this, but I behave as though I desire to be free from my bonds.
Daily I am anxious and groan about it, but I continue to be ensnared by the same traps.
How pathetic I am, and how pathetic is my daily repentance.
      It has no steadfast foundation.
Daily I put down a foundation for the edifice and then I destroy it with my hands.
I have not yet made a good start with my repentance, and there is no end to my evil neglect.
I have become enslaved in the passions and to the wicked desires of the foe who ruins me.
Who will provide water for my head, and fountains for my weeping, so that I will always weep in front of You?
O merciful God, send forth Your grace and pull me, a sinner, from the sea, violent with the waves of sin, which hourly wrack my soul.
Because my lusts are more grievous than wounds that cannot be treated. I await repentance and trick myself with this empty promise until my end.
Always I say, "I will repent," but I never repent.
My words appear to offer deep repentance, but my deeds are far from it.
What will I endure in the day of sentencing, when God reveals everything in His court.
Surely I will be condemned to torture, if I have not found mercy through my tears with You, O my Judge.
O Lord, I depend on Your mercies. I fall before Your feet and entreat You.
Give me a spirit of repentance and guide my soul from the dungeon of lawlessness.
May a beam of light illuminate my mind before I am led to the fearful judgment which waits for me, where there is no possibility of repenting for one's evil doings.
