    I was skeptical too but this shoe is awesome. Did two 8 hour mountain runs in Colorado with the Evo M and really have no complaints. The upper is different but durable and works for me. For great grip, protection and a responsive ride it’s hard to beat.

    Good shoe that could be great if HOKA would offer 2E / 4E width options ... until then: Altra Timp.

    Loved youre review maybe this is more of a personal note because I have the but I’m curious as to more comparisons with the speedgoat 2. I don’t think it could hurt your review process to do more comparisons to other shoes especially in the same brand and not just on initial thoughts but final thoughts.

    GINGER RUNNER REVIEWS ARE BACK BABY!

  • @JustAnotherRunnerGirl

    This gives me hope. While Ginger is not happy that the shoe is too narrow, I have a narrow foot and I'm finding it harder and harder to find a good Hoka that doesn't have too much room inside. My beloved Stinson's even went wider in the 4's. Not everyone has wide feet - and a cushiony, narrow Hoka is getting hard to find. Thank you for the review, GR!😊

    I got these shoes recently for the Inca Trail Marathon in Peru getting me third place. I can't say enough good things about them. I have narrow feet so that isn't a negative for me. I'm sort of a cheapskate when it comes to shoes but this is definitely worth the price tag. I have nagging injuries even with other cushioned hoka brands, but this model is on another level and seems to dissipate when I wear them. It's hard to go back to anything else now.

    Ive only got about 40 miles on mine, but so far I love them. Took them on a 20 miler and never had any issues. They are cushioned enough for me (i love cushion) and the grip is amazing. Ive got a pair of challenger ATR 3s and Salomon Sense Ride's that I rotate through and the Mafate is by far my favorite.

    Sending them back. They cut into my 4th toe on both shoes. You can see in the review where the crease line is at the base of the laces. They are narrow and HOT.

    My dirtest PNW shoe on hand. Hoka One One was a shoe I never wanted to like.
    I tried my first pair of Clifton 4's a few weeks ago, but today I live in the Hoka shoes including the EVO Mafate.
    I have just over 100 miles in them now but these shoes rock! Comfortable and very responsive. Loved the Speed Goat but these are rungasmic. With Teanaway Country 100 stains on them, they are my go to shoes with traction, comfort but not wallet.

    Speaking of durability though I bought a pair of Hoka Clifton 2 at Nordstrom’s rack and so far have like almost 600 miles on them and nothing is breaking down yet. So they seem durable to me. I am 5-10 weight 160 lbs just for reference.

  • @Wesz808

    Yes yes yes... finally a more responsive ride. Been accumulating Napali ATR's because all those new hoka's are stiff as a board. Giving me a whole lot of little feet and knee pains. Also a lot slower and not comfortable at all. Went to Altra (duo) as a Hoka fanboy because of it. Also a tip for people having durability issues. I uses custom made insoles. Because of the shape of the insole my foot doesn't move that much in the shoe. When I don't use them my toes often hit the front inside of the shoe (it's even worse with Altra). I don't have much durability issues with Hoka at all. And I suspect it's because of the insoles I use.

    Great review, as usual.... for me, the big showstopper is the width.... Hoka, WE NEED WIDE WIDTHS!!!!!! I know too many people who agree with me.... as someone who needs a 2E or even 4E, this narrow shoe will never cut it. Same goes for other Hokas. :( Please, make me a trail shoe that's wide and I'll but it in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!!

  • @chrispoplawski9286
    @chrispoplawski9286 6 лет назад +7

    Odd that you say these run narrow, but not as narrow as the speedgoats. Your video on the salomon sense ride sold me on those shoes, because you said they aren’t narrow. I went to the store to try them and pick them up, until I put them on, they felt like a death grip on my foot, so narrow. I decided to try the speedgoats just to try them, and holy hell they felt amazing, way less narrow than the sense ride. I guess I’m not sure why you’d think the sense ride aren’t narrow but hokas are.
    Great videos nonetheless and always great information.

      I've had the Hoka narrowness issue as well and love the fit of the Mafate. This shoe reminds me of the early Hokas especially with the thin inserts. I've done some 10 milers in the Arkansas heat and haven't noticed them retaining water too bad so far. I have had a few rocks get stuck in the bottom but overall a great shoe IMO. I used the Running warehouse discount to save $.

    3 runs in a pair of these and I love them. Toe box is a tad narrow, but not a show stopper for me. Descending is where these shoes excel, loads of cushioning and grip which I haven’t felt in a Hoka for a long time now. Price is high....too high, but I won’t sending them back!

    • @profdleeucc
      @profdleeucc 5 лет назад

      Toebox is on the narrow side for Hoka trail show; so get one size up and also be sure to wear heavy sock such as Vermont Tough lifetime sock made of comfortable wool; as the upper is of a woven kevlar and cloth compound which is quite rough in texture;
      now the heavy socks will help prevent any potential abrasion chafing issues of ones foot rubbing against shoe upper material; and also allow one to have just a tad more room in ones toebox area;
      now the comfort level of having ones foot in heavy sock that is cushioned will also allow one the optimal comfort as the trail miles start to stack up thus increasing ones overall comfort level and lessen ones foot fatigue levels by the end of one trail hiking day;
      now in regards to the above average price of $170 the Evo Mafate does have the above average much more durable kevlar upper reinforced cloth as well as; while the above average much more durable Rmat midsole cushioning material that is apparently made of some kind of much more durable Hoka customized rubberized foam material that basically does not break down for literally hundreds of miles -closer to 500 to 600 miles;
      now the above average much more durable and wear resistant vibram mega grip design is also highly desired with its highly aggressive, durable, wear resistant 5mm pattern arrayed angled deep depth lugs allow one to even get a decent reliable grip on wet slippery moss covered rock surfaces;
      now all of this ultimately adds up to one highly evolved and improved high performance trail shoe that may actually last long enough to warrant its higher premium asked for price of $170;
      now its also certainly one of the more durable, reliable and high performance trail shoes that one can use over time even when one racks up typically 500 to 600 miles when other trail shoes typically already start to blowout and fail in expected trail shoe performance characteristics;
      now its then one might find oneself buying another replacement Hoka One One Evo Mafate after being able to traverse over the trails with it for so long like one would expect of a trusted old reliable trail performance shoe;
      now it is then one might consider it might be the kind of high performance shoe one is looking for when its eventual replacement time comes around after all; now your actual expected trail mileage and actual expected user performance expectations may vary of course;
      but it typically is definitely one of the above average performing trail shoes user choices that one can typically find to actually savor using, experiencing and enjoying for quite some time; mileage wise over the many expected enjoyable trail use miles without unduly potentially wearing out anytime soon;
      all no thanks to its rather thoughtful clever integrated Hoka One One impactful user friendly performance trail use shoe designs that has been baked into its trail performance shoe DNA design and gradually improved over its ever evolving trail performance shoe over time from feedback from its Hoka One One users.

    Another "must see" review. I never act without hearing what you have to say.
    Here is my general take on "pillow cloud shoes like Hoka, the "pillow cloud" design worries me. One good thing the minimalist fad of a few years ago produced was a sudden appreciation of the central importance of good running form and technique. Minimalist shoes were unforgiving if you deviate from good form. Not so with the "pillow cloud" shoes. This may not be a major issue for elite runners like Jim Walmsley who obsess over form and technique but it is for us non-elites. Many of these reviews tell us is to expect 2-3 weeks to break in. Is that to allow the shoes themselves to break in? Or is it the runner adapting to the shoe?
    I have nothing against cushioning. But just put it exactly where I need it, not heel to toe. The shoe should re-enforce good form not forgive sloppy form which I believe is the key aspect of this design. It will be interesting to see how many runners develop problems. I suspect that this is yet another fad that will breed the next set of problems for the next fad to address. Problems sell shoes.
    And why the outer sole durability issue again? Could it be that the industry is too focused on marketing to the legions of over-pronators that populate the less-than-elite running community? Or to expand their market to hipster non-runners who just want to look like runners? For runners with normal/high arches (like me) it is normal to supinate slightly. Or so they say. But if that is true, why not make a shoe for us? Our only choices are neutral or over-pronate. Why is that?
    I'm always looking for my next shoe but I'm not anywhere near forking out $170 for any shoe and certainly not Hokas or other "pillow cloud" shoes.

    Can anyone explain to me why the Hoka Bondi made my heel hurt so badly? I’m a midfoot/forefoot runner..and that shoe destroyed my right heel....maybe the heel cup? Maybe because they’re so stiff?

    Have you ever tried running in a Hoka One One wide model (i.e. the Clifton 5 Wide) to see if that might be the unicorn you have been looking for with Hoka. I know it is a bit silly to have to buy a wide when you have a standard last foot, but it could remedy your width issues with Hoka.

    How do these compare width-wise to the Stinson 4? Most of Hoka's trail shoes are too narrow, but the Stinson fits. Unfortunately, the soles on the Stinsons are adorable and would never handle Pennsylvania's trails.

    I've put about 150 miles in mine. I love this shoe. I have a narrow foot (but not narrow enough to be really comfortable in the Speedgoat). This shoe fits great. (The Torrent, not so much. I need to go down a full size in that boat). The Mafate is also a nice fit in the midfoot and heel, unlike the Torrent, which is all around sloppy. (I'm also not a guy who can wear Altras - too wide in the midfoot; I need tread on my socks to have traction inside those hellish things, otherwise I am fighting the shoe). Also worth noting: the Mafate Evo toe box has some volume, not just width. The tread is great, the shoe is lighter than expected, and it's just a great ride. $170 is a lot of money, but... $170 for a pair of shoes that might last 500 miles is a better deal than $130 for a pair that breaks down (or I give up on) after 200 miles, so... there's that.

    Too pricey for me, and at that price I'd probably go with a Salomon since that would place you in their S-Lab range.
    I have the Torrent though, really enjoy it. Well cushioned, responsive, light weight, agile, a good long distance shoe. Now that the shoe has worn in a bit I think I probably could have sized down a half size, as on very steep descents I do experience some sliding forward in the shoe which could eventually lead to a blister under my foot. But so far that hasn't occurred.

    Trying to find 12.5 (especially wide) Hoka's in the UK is extremely frustrating. I've had Vanquish 2's, Bondi 5's and Hupanas in the last 3 years and they all make other brands feel like walking on thin rubber. They also helped cure nasty plantar fasciitis on both feet. I walk 50 miles a week and won't bother buying other makes now. I tried Adidas boost before them but dear gods they are dangerous when it's wet... especially if you tread on a metal drain lid or similar.

      itm72 hey buddy. I am the same sizing as you, based in UK and had the same issues. Hoka Bondi 5 is available in 12.5 wide and a great cushioned shoe- I trained/ran for half marathon in it. Brilliant for tarmac. For trails I use the Hoka ATR Challenger 4s in 12.5. They are not sold as wide, but fit wider than other Hoka trails runners. Hope this helps. For fast runs, Brooks ghost 10s are great, their upper is very flexible so stretches well for wide feet.

    NOT first! 😝 For me, $170 is a show-stopper...just can’t justify it. I’ll be looking forward to your Torrent review, however!

      ratliff2006 there are too many great shoes in the $100 - $130 range...and NO, I do not and will not spend $1K on a phone.

      Some online stores have up to 25% off to this. That's the only time i'll buying this one. Not paying $170 straight up. But really looking forward to having a pair.

      I used the Running warehouse Ginger runner code to knock some $ off. These are great shoes I'm planning to use for some long fall races. Reminds me of original Hokas!

  • @travischapman6763

    Can you put your foot width in videos? I realize that as an "A" width, teetering on "AA" width, any shoe which is not a narrow specific last or specifically for women will be too wide. Hoka's shoes were unwearable due to their width. The store I worked at usually recommended them for wider footed individuals as well. this info would help give a more general idea of shoe fit from these videos as they're obviously not on our feet.
    So if you say a shoe is:
    A little narrow - perhaps a true D width
    Very narrow- something which could work for me
    Plenty of room to even a little wide - way our of my foot range
    Thanks

    I went through 4 pair of Clifton 4s and then got a pair of Elevon which are more expensive than the Clifton and for me not as good. I am looking to get into more technical ultras and these maybe a try. Bigger $ doesn't mean better. I went back and got 2 more pair of Clifton 4s, once I am done with those I will move to the 5s, but I will still need something in the tool belt with more grip and these maybe worth a tray, my Salomon try was a fail.

    Anyone have problems with rolling ankles easily in Hoka's?

    • @jeremywelwood818
      @jeremywelwood818 6 лет назад

      Drew Romans I do find that I “roll” my ankles over a lot more often in my Hokas than the other brands of shoes in my rotation. Although, to be fair, none of the “rolls” resulted in any pain beyond a day or two.

    When people call the Speedgoat 2 narrow, I want to laugh. I also wonder how wide their foot is since Bigfoot could fit into Speedgoat 2's...You want narrow, Salomon S-Lab Sense series, that's narrow.

    For anyone: Do most Hokas run narrow in the toe box?

    • @nonorunner8136
      @nonorunner8136 6 лет назад +1

      I don't think so actually.I have Hobbit foot (polite version. Duck slippers closer to truth) I used to buy mostly Brooks and Asics, and suffered from toe squishing. I had now ran in 3 pairs of Hoka, and they were all pretty roomy. I do not understand Ethan's comments. Cliftons and Challengers have round toeboxes, not pointy as other trademarks. Plenty of room there. (but totally agree with the comment on durability. OMG, it was something when my Challengers opened up at km 50 of a muddy ultra. After only about 300K too)

    • @jodydunnit
      @jodydunnit 6 лет назад

      I think most Hoka's have tighter toe boxes except for the Stinson ATR4 which have plenty of room and fit nice. Also sizing has improved in the last 18 months compared to what was being sold 2-3 years ago. What has not improved is the consistency and integrity of the cushioning. Can get a size 13 in a particular model that will be plush, get it in a size 14 and it's like wearing a concrete brick.
