The new Hoka Mafate Speed 4 is certainly a solid go-long trail shoe. But it has some quirks. What do YOU think? Snag a pair for yourself from links in the description!
I ran an 160k mountain race in Europe in them, and only used one pair. Gripped amazing, fit was perfect. I also like the tounge update, the 3 was too thin and the shoe bulky. This felt perfect. Favorite trail shoe of the year
Good review, I'm with you on stability but more than willing to arrange myself as the shoe is still "nimble" although high stack. The heel is a miss, debris comes in and a traditional heel was never a problem (in all my Hokas). The toe problem might be very personal, I don't have it with the MS4 but I have sometimes with other shoes, so here we go...all in all, great shoe for long, excellent grip on everything, still runnable in technical terrain with adaption, what more can you want ?
Yo bro im total nooobie, i tried Peregrine 12 and my foot was super happy with it well in the shop tho not in real condition. my question this model of Hoka is the same as a peregrine ? i saw a pair just saw and i say woaaaah its about the Fujispeed, the looks is crazzzzy ! but never tried them. if i have to chose just one of the 3 any advice ? :) thanks
It has the same major issue as the SG5 - the upper mesh has too much stretch to lock down the shoe. The footbed is also weirdly long and the toe is very prominent due to the design. The toe catch is another problem. The heel is also a miss. It’s a lot of issues for a $185 dollar shoe. The durability is a concern given the foam used - it’s likely to go flat in 200 miles.
Totally in love with the comfort of these but I find the lite base vibram wear's a bit too easily and quickly compared to standard vibram in other footwear I have, love the profly + cushioning, probably one of my favourite runner's to ever go on my feet
I love these honest reviews because this shoe may be perfect Fer people with narrow feet or other foot types. For me, it should cause compression issues, especially with wider feet. Thanks for another amazing review.
With my wide foot. I really found them to be the best fit over my Salomon ane Asics trail shoes. The upper just fits so well and wide base makes it feel like a near perfect shoe. There's certainly always TOPO or Altra but they don't have a midsole as versatile as Hoka.
Hmm. Have been tempted by this, but I am still running in the Mafate Speed 2, which have 800km on them and they are STILL going strong; upper still in one piece with a tiny bit of stitching coming out where I caught on a rock and Vibram still has some decent wear left. Bit concerned with what you said about stability and the last not being as stiff. Long time Hoka fan but find their more recent shoes just do not last as long...not a fan of the swallow tail on so many of their new shoes :/
Yeah. Love this shoe so much and love how fast and free you can feel with that grip. I agree with your comment about the toe catch. I ended up putting some fabric tape inside and outside of the shoe to try and prevent the toe catch. Still loving runs in it and ready for the soggy winter weather!
@sidlord1000 It did help at the start, but wore out quickly. After 60 or so miles, it resolved itself as the shoes got broken in. Definitely would buy another pair after I wear these out.
Hey Ethan - thanks for the video! Excited for all the videos to come! A message from me - take your time and don't chain yourself to the editing suite just for us - we want you healthy and happy for the long term, we can always wait on a video. Take care!
OMG, I really struggled with my Clifton 8. I could figure out why I feel like the shoes curve up, and I thought it was the insole not working well. But as you described the bend due to the softness & tightening of laces - it makes perfect sense. I survived 800km with the Clifton. But it gave me blisters and I grew to resent them, but I got my money's worth!
I'm interested but the price has to come down significantly before I get them. That heel is definitely disappointing, the SG5 let so much dirt in that I need gaiters for anything over 20 km in them.
Great review Ethan. I REALLY want to like Hokas but they need to sort out their upper and lockdown! Spot on with the swallow tail heel, I had debris get in there in the SG 5.
Everything sounds great except the stability part which I need... SG5 lacked a little of that, it was slightly wider than I liked, a price concern too. Great review as always, exciting things to come!
I had too many choices you've narrowed the field down it came down to Mafate 4 or the speedgoat 5 I settled on the Mafate 4 as it just felt a bit nicer for my likes. Thank you for the review it helped out a lot
I dont have the toebox issues or the debris as i am buying my shoes at a thight fit.. always had the SG4.. the SG5 is a disaster so now i am with these.. overall very comfy.. but on rocky technical terrain the outsole will damage very fast ..between the vibram lugs there is a lot of midsole exposed .. we need a hoka with completely covered vibram outsole... my speedgoat evo's heel tore off completely during a trailrace in Austria last year 🥲
Finally tried a pair and instantly love. Wish I had not wasted money on SG5 as they are now dead to me. These are what speedgoat 5 should have been- pretty sure some new person at hoka mislabeled them at production and they just went with it.
Loving the feel of the Speedgoat 5, but the Mafate has me very interested to give a go for my spring Ultra. Feel like the drawbacks are very similar in both of the shoes. Cheers.
Same here. They removed some of the magic on speedgoats with version 5. Just discovered vectiv enduris 2 and kind of liking them a lot after a few runs.
Any thoughts on how this version #4 compares to the last model? I’m seeing them on sale on some sights and was wondering how they compare, thanks in advance for you thoughts. Have a great weekend everyone.
I've been loving the grip the Mafate 4 brings, it's better than the SG5 and feels a little softer underfoot too. The price was high, but I don't regret the purchase!
Meh. Lost me at "responsive" (hard). I like the Stinson; the outsole width, the fit, enough cushion. Everything but the weight. I was hoping for a "Stinson Lite" with the Mafate 4. I'll keep looking. SG is also hard, and does weird things medially with my foot plant, maybe I tried on a defective pair where the upper was attached to the midsole wrong.
Very comfortable shoe. But even just walking out of the parking lot, that toe catch on the upper several times was a deal breaker. No matter how I adjusted it, my toe would catch. Wouldn’t even be able to use them in the yard it was so bad so I tossed them.
I just received a pair of these I ordered. I tried them on and they feel great, but I instantly got your comment for the toe catch on my right foot. A solid half size smaller than my left foot. I think the shoes will be great, but that toe catch could be an issue. Would you recommend a heel grip to move more foot forward some as I have no issue on on the left foot. Or, any other recommendations on how to counter that joint area in the toe box?
I bought these on a great discount. 140 bucks. They are my first trail shoes, and I bought them due to the similarities to the Mach 5, which is my favourite shoe ever. Looking forward to many kilometers in the trails :)
@@varunpotluri8387 I really love my Mafate Speed 4. The make me just as happy as my Mach 5 does when I'm running. They are my first pair of trail shoes though, so I don't have a lot to compare them with. But if Hoka shoes fot you, and you enjoy the Mach 5, then I think you'll love them.
Am supa amped about satisfy X hoka mafate. But, do I need to size up half a size ? I half sized up in Hoka Skyward but way too big. I have broadish feet struggle with Hokas.
JW - I'd say this since I have both of those. The MafSPeed4 is a better fitting/hugging shoe, and the outsole is (to me) better than the SG5, as is the TONGUE (man that tongue is so nice, hate that thin too-short tongue on the Speedgoat). I have had zero toe catch issues on the fabric as Ethan apparently experienced. I think the material is good, durable, but might not "give" as much as SG5 but I also use ALTRA shoes and my toes are not tiny. ZERO issues with the MafSpeed 4, and I'm a former EvoMafate2 user. Have fun out there!
@@antidepressants9232 I think it depends on how wide your foot is. I'm a tad more snug, but comfortable, in the Mafates than I am in the Speedgoats. I think the jacquard mesh is a little stiffer on the sides but I have had zero issues with my big toe/pinkie toe issues even up to 20 miles. Would I run 50-100 miles in the Maf? Uh, not sure about that but for anything trail marathon or less, I think it's a great choice. And that tread grip and tongue! Amazing. I think they'll last, too.
I’m going to pass on this one even though it seems like a solid shoe. It’s definitely out of my target price range. Looking forward to the challenger atr 7, or buying a few cheep atr 6’s. Luckily I’ve been hoarding a pair of evo m 2’s.
I love these and have been running in them since September. However, I keep developing blisters on the side of my big toe. I never get blisters, and I wonder if it’s from the issues with the midsole curving up like you’ve mentioned.
Now, with a BF discount I don't need to think of the cost, just features. So having a choice between new Hoka toys, Mafate wins against Speedgoat. Looking elsewhere, I'd must try SAUCONY, the Xodus Ultra.

They are not. It's not mentioned in the reviews because it's almost never the case with (trail) running shoes. You can generally assume that they aren't and only a really small number (often made for winter running) of models have some kind of membrane. In those cases it will be pointed out.
Yeah, what Florian said. It’s only talked about when the shoe actually utilizes waterproof fabrics/membranes (rare and more niche). Assume all trail (and any for that matter) shoes absorb water. Drainage is usually talked about when it’s an issue.
I really want to love Hokas…but for some reason, my hips feel like their going to explode every time I run in any of their shoes. It’s the only brand I have this issue with (I run in the NB MoreV4, so I don’t get why Hokas won’t work for me?) Great review as always!
I've run many miles in Hoka's, specifically the Mach line and the Speedgoats, and I do agree their fit is very, shall we say, interesting? I feel like I'm used to their technology but if I take Hoka out of my rotation for a couple of weeks and put them back in I can really sense the difference. I think partially it's how the shoe's kind of branch out like a tree from a tree trunk. Tight on the mid foot then a bit wider in the toe box
Actually the reverse way. The area which get my pinky toes squeezed in SG⁵ is growing to nice wide toe box in Mafate. Narrow fit is what made me stay away from SG³ and ⁴.
