As of today I have 909 miles on my Mafate Speed 4. Nothing is falling apart. The tread is definitely showing some wear. This shoe will probably last 3 times longer than any Speedgoat I owned.

Sweet review! I completely agree about the tounge/lockdown on the SG5. Mafate 4 vs Exodus Ultra should be the next showdown.

  • @alexkhan2000

I have both and I definitely prefer the Mafate Speed 4. The SG5 is good with its cushioning for relatively straight-ahead runs on gravel and hard-packed dirt trails, but I don't like it for technical trails where agility and nimbleness are needed. The midsole stack is a little too high for that. The MS4, in comparison, can pretty much do it all and just might be my favorite for technical trails due to the superior traction and lower-to-ground feel. And it also provides good comfort and protection. I have a lot of good trail running shoes but I find that I have pretty much everything covered in between the MS4, Xodus Ultra, and the new Peregrine 13 I got recently. Looking forward to the Xodus Ultra 2!

Good comparison, I’d definitely agree with your preference to the Mafate 4s. The cushioning feels high quality it’s soft and responsive but stable as well. Definitely a better lockdown and more confidence inspiring and comfortable l. Feels great even 25k into a run.
I’ve enjoyed the Speedgoat 5s and done 650km in 2 pairs, I did find the speedgoat midsole flattens out after 350-400km though and the upper stretch issues you mentioned.

Currently using the Mafate 4. Took them on a 35km trail race straight out of the box and since then have run around 200km of races. Toe padding is protective, however I find they can be blister machines on the toes if not laced properly.

Great comparison Loyd, I have both shoes and brought them for 100k race last week, wore the MS4 in the first 50k, it was great but I have blister on both of my toenails (I have wide feet and went half size up), and switched to SG5 (wide) for the second half of the race, felt better thereafter. Not recommended to wear MF4 more than 50k if you have a wide feet, it just rubs my toenails badly.

Wore my Mafates for The Grizzly the other week (20 miles along the Jurassic Coast). Amazing shoes. Comfortable from my first step to my last. My only criticism was that at times, the lugs didn't clear of debris as quickly as I would have liked, that said, I was running through thick, sticky, muddy fields.
Anyone with concerns about the width should try them. I have feet of 'normal' width and have no issues at all. Many retailers have a 30 day return period now. Try them, they may change your life.

Great review! I am on the market for some new trail shoes. I have had my eyes on the SG for some time. Though have always been concerned with the fit, and stability with the higher stack. Also, I am coming from the M5 as a daily trainer. So I am familiar with the dual density Profly midsole. I am not crazy about the colorways tbh, though have to seriously consider these. I can’t wait to try them out, as well as the SG. To see how they compare. Thnx

You can get the SG5 for £80 if you shop around. That said, I think it has the worst upper of any trail shoe I've had. It stretches too much and my feet slide in them on downhills. It also rubs my ankle bone if I don't keep stopping and readjusting my laces. Never had a single problem with the previous Speedgoats!

Hi Loyd, I've pretty much trashed my Xodus Ultra 2s after just 500km which is disappointing as I enjoyed running in them. I'm thinking about the Mafates and wondered how they compared to the Sauconys in terms of cushioning/ride? Prior to the Sauconys I had some Nike Zegamas which I know you weren't a fan of, they were super comfortable though and pretty hard wearing but the high stack height caused one too many rolled ankles, this slightly worries me with the Hokas as they look like a similar stack. Thanks for the great content and it was great to bump into you on the Serpent Trail earlier this year. Cheers, Andy

Unfortunately that will happen to most trail shoes if you wear them a lot on the road Michelle 😕

Don't know why Hoka shoes have pretty big discount in my place year round (SG5 around US$ 95 and MS4 US$105-110), with small difference there is raally no point in choosing SG5 over MS4😂

The Vibram outsole on Mafate Speed 4 would work well for hiking in the Austrian Alps 👍

Oh dear. Are Hoka heading the way of Inov8 making lots of shoes that all look the same which confuses the customer & Hoka end up being master of none?

    • @Run4Adventure

I'm not sure Hoka are as bad as inov8 for this Paul? The Speedgoat and the Mafate feel very different to run in 👍

@@Run4Adventure Another great review Loyd. But did you see Hoka now also have a Challenger 7? Looks like the Mafite

    • @Run4Adventure
      @Run4Adventure  Год назад +1

@@DartmoorPaul The Challenger is a very different shoe to the Mafate, firmer midsole (not Profly) and its got a smaller lugs on the outsole and no Vibram rubber. The Challenger is more of a cross over shoe for road and trail, where as the Mafate is out and out trail 👍
The only thing that's similar between the two models is the upper design Paul 😊
      Thanks for watching 🙏

I love your videos but it would be so great if you could speak more calm, quiet (you're almost screaming most of the time) and on a lower pitch.. already after few minutes it starts to be tiring and slightly annoying.. Sorry thats what I feel. Take care:)

@@wadetheblade3261 It's called a runners knot and it really doesn't work for me. I've tried it a few rimes over the years and I find it very uncomfortable. Also the tounge on the Speedgoat is to short to use it! I worked in running retail for 10 years and I've fitted 1000's of pairs of running shoes on lots of different footshape. Obviously I know the runners knot, there's actually several different ways of lacing up your running shoes 👍
