Still on the EVO Mafate 2 as a bombproof shoe. 300 miles on mine, grip is still there, traction/outsole fine, midsole still has give. Just amazing. The upper is tear-proof and comfy.
First time coming back to Hoka since the original Mafate Speed ... astounded how much I love this shoe. I've run Wonderland, a bunch of 50k training runs, and am amazed that there is so much trail feel even with the cushioning. Grip is awesome on every conceivable surface. I haven't had the heel issues or break down difficulties, and am wondering if that is in part because I sized down half a size. These shoes are looong! Once I got into the smaller size, all the pieces fell into place. My feet have been functionally homeless since Pearl Izumi stopped making shoes. Now they have a stable home. Yay!
Noticed that I also need to go down n a half size from the Evo Mafate 1. They are longer and after 200 miles the material in the center area stretched giving me a sloppy fit. I replaced the insole with a Superfeet insole and this helped, but will get the next pair a half size smaller.
500 miles in my first pair of Evo Mafate 2 and have 200 miles on second pair. They hold up extremely well. I had no separation of material from sole, no holes, just good ole normal wear. This was a far better shoe than the Evo Mafate 1 as the material was much stiffer and caused blisters on the top of the foot from the crinkle in material. I'm excited to see what they give us for the next model.
I bought a pair....they are a bit more roomy and somewhat stretchy in a good way---toe box is same or a little more room....I really like em but I also like the SG2.
Worn these since release date. Upper is great, feels more responsive/stiff than the first evo mafate. More forgiving on you’re feet than the speedgoat on long runs.
I'd still like to see a TerraUltra 260 review. Inov8, zero-drop, with a TPU based midsole? Sounds super interesting. Plus graphene, although that excites me less than a zero-drop shoe with a slightly different design philosophy than Altra. I also understand the first iteration had some issues with the upper, but this has supposedly been fixed in the new 2019 iteration. Otherwise... I'm mostly interested in some fringe outdoor shoes at this point. Carson Footwear is interesting (and super low tech), but also look like durable zero-drop crushers. And there's always the Luna Venado! So many options! So few feet! We need to get you more feet!
Thanks Ethan, I like the Mafate 3 but just looking for something a little lighter for the Great Glen Ultra in Scotland UK. Also I bloody struggled at the Seattle Marathon in 2018. But we so so loved the city and people. Hopefully we will come back for another go in ‘22 maybe although the new San Francisco 50k or 50 miler in November to replace the TNF50 is looking good too
Bought them. Love them. I hated the narrowness of the Speedgoat 3 to the point I gave them away after 20k (We don't have those enviably casual return policies in Europe ). I ran a 50k last week in them and was actually laughing occasionally at how much fun they are to bomb along in. (Although that could have been down to some caffeinated Tailwind). Get them. Love them too.
I went up a half size for the og evo mofate, I’m gathering because of the heel fit I should stay with my normal hoka go to size... one thing I do like about that original mofate is that heel cup. I think it helps with the responsiveness of the shoe, hard to get back on at mile 75 after your first change of socks, but a good snug feeling nonetheless. Damn I wish I could be in a chat room with the ginger runner right now, trying to pull the trigger on this , to og is still available,i love it so much, I just need to know...... 1 or 2 lease help!!
I find this shoe much softer than the first version, so, it is not as responsive as V1. I noticed that right off, so I am surprised it was not mentioned. It is working out well so far. The V1 keep separating at toe, so I see that change as a positive, although the side issue does have me on alert. It does seem the lines between SpeedGoat and Mafate are quite blurred.
Just got my Evo Mafate Speed 2. Had to send them back. The grommets Hoka put on the eyelets hurt the top of my feet. Stinks the original Mafates are not available in my size anymore. Will be trying the 2’s next. Figure I share for those thinking about getting a pair of the Speed 2.
WOW ! Top 20 !!!....#18 !!! I would love to try this and the new Speedgoat EVO....but the price is keeping me away. Maybe in the future...but for now Ill stick to my Regular Speedgoat...it works ! Great review Ethan.... ( Hi Kim !)
I am running in the original EVO now (got them on sale😁). I am experiencing the same durability issues you have discribed in the 2s including the toe rubber releasing from the shoe. I have about 80 miles on them now. Still love the shoe, but I can’t imagine paying full price for a shoe that seems to be prematurely wearing.
That's weird. Your durability issue with the EVO maf2, i think i experienced in the evo maf1 including some paint/rubber chip/peeling on the upper. But like what you said, it's not something that I think would just blow up the shoes so easily. Getting the maf2 as I won the WSER prediction contest by @irunfar! :) I have noticed the long shoe laces, is it longer than that of the 1? that's one the few things I was sad about -- P$170 and then a few inches short laces. hehe
ok Gingy... bottom line I just got into more trail running and LOVING IT !!!! but I need new (actual) trail runners.. These or the EVO SG's $'s aside.. which would you choose.. I also plan on training for an ultra, my first... EVER! road or trail.. In other words HELP ME !!!
I’m currently in mafate evo 1’s. Prior to that I had 3 pairs of mafate speed 2’s each gave me 500 miles of fantastic soft miles, no tendinitis, no Achilles pain, best shoe I’ve ever put on my feet. I’m only 40 miles into the evos and I like them but they are different. In the plus side they make me run faster, they seem to promote a faster toe off while still being super cushioned. I did however have some hip joint and Achilles pain after running a 10k race in them the other week and there is more flex in them so I get the odd twinge in my foot towards the big toe I’m guessing because it’s just not used to being flexed this much while running
GhostlyBG about the same, I have a wider foot and my left foot in particular my little toe touches the side of the shoe but like the speed 2 they don’t cause any rubbing and 50 miles in they’ve given a bit and my toe no longer touches the side
Just received mine, i bought on my usual size but in fact it feels 1/2 size too big and i am thinking about returning it and size down, you mentioned that you were glad that you didn't sized down but do you feel that if you did size down it could still work for you? Really don't know what to do, they are on the expensive side to be left on the shelf...
Hey GR - What are these like running on hilly slopes with plenty of mud and puddles etc - I just tried some Salomon SpeedCross 4 GTX but didn't like them - they were way too stiff and firm - I need cushioning and comfort - thanks man
Great review; spot on with the heel. I prefer the fit of the Evo Mafate 1 over the Mafate 2. Mafate 2 has slight heel slip. I take the same size as in Nike
Good review! However, I don't necessarily understand the complaints about price. You say "you'll get your miles per dollar out of it, you must might have to sell a kidney to do it." That is a terrible way to think about it. I pay close attention to miles/dollar in all my shoes. If I get, say, 700 miles out of a $170 shoe and only 400 miles out of a $130 shoe, then then the $170 shoe is the better buy. The more expensive shoe gives me 4.1 miles/dollar and the cheaper one 3.1 miles/dollar. That is a huge difference and it's in favor of the more "expensive" shoe! In a very real sense (i.e., in shoe-dollars-per-year) the more expensive shoe is cheaper. I try to shoot for 3 miles/dollar average all my shoes together. Many "inexpensive" shoes end up skewing my average down if they don't work out or break down early. My all-time best shoe was a Hoka Bondi that I got at an REI garage sale for $10 and put 900 miles on; that was 90 miles/dollar!
Anyone getting a lot of Little pebbles and rocks stuck in the middle foot on the Eva foam? I keep having to pry them out and I think it’s starting to degrade the shoe in the very middle where there’s a little diamond pattern. Serious concern or nah? Thanks!
@@johnmarshall9820 Ah I gotcha, but sometimes lighthearted ribs on appearance don't come across so well. I still remember shit people said to me years ago... Anyway, good on you for clarifying.
Still on the EVO Mafate 2 as a bombproof shoe. 300 miles on mine, grip is still there, traction/outsole fine, midsole still has give. Just amazing. The upper is tear-proof and comfy.
This Ginger Guy, he's alright. Pretty alright. Ah who am I kidding I love him.

Love to see a review of the EVO Speedgoat
I bought a pair....they are a bit more roomy and somewhat stretchy in a good way---toe box is same or a little more room....I really like em but I also like the SG2.
I am sure he is running the 50miles on it before he makes the review :P
@@roustabout4fun Is it more breathable than Speedgoat 2?
spotlight761 evo speedgoat is much better
Just ran my first 100 miler in a single pair of this shoe. Great shoe!! Spot on review. Thanks, Ethan.
Just did Superior 100 in them and they were fantastic. More comfy and better in mud than the SG’s. Good to go right out of the box too. Big fan.
Worn these since release date. Upper is great, feels more responsive/stiff than the first evo mafate. More forgiving on you’re feet than the speedgoat on long runs.
Been watching Ginger since 2014, I miss the points. I bought so many 16/20 shoes he recommended 😜
I just want a 16/20 t-shirt.
Likewise!

I won’t be a shoe without your thumbs up... you are a great spot on reviewer in my book. Keep up the good work Ethan.
Great shoe. Bit wider than the 1st version. The lugs are now worn down on mine. Didn’t last very long on muddy and gravel trails

Have the original evo mafate. 300 miles in them now. Front rubber getting loose and low on rubber but under but love the shoe!

So how does it compare to the (regular) Speedgoat 2/3? Similar?
Upvote for white claw reference.
White claw and hummis. So Seattle!
Thank you for another awesome review 😎. Please also do a review of the Evo Mafate Speed 2!
Picked up the EVO MAFATE for £89 last month. Sales are out there :-)
Lee, are these true to size?

Fourth pair of Hokas, always the same size but these ones have way too much heel space. Going to have to try the runners knot for the first time ever.

How about as a comparison to the Altra Lone Peak?
Lone Peak has much less cushion, different class of shoe. The natural comparison would be to the Altra Olympus.
