I really liked the Tecton X, but does Hoka’s Tecton X 2 improve the shoe despite its high price? Let’s find out! Get your Tecton X 2 or any running gear: www.runningwarehouse.com/HOKA_Tecton_X_2/descpage-HTX2M2.html?from=ginger
I got 550 miles out of my Tecton X. And I just picked up a pair of Tecton X 2 for 50% off. So, now it’s definitely a try. Thank for your great reviews!
Just raced these in a 12-hour most-miles mountain race on the Navajo Nation with 7,500’ total feet of vertical ascent and corresponding descent. Works in nearly all conditions except thick mud, which happened during a thunderstorm. Shoe absolutely doesn’t shed mud. Otherwise highly recommend.
I won these shoes in a raffle on Global Running Day. Took them out for a few long runs in the San Gabriel Mountains including Wilson and I've been extremely impressed. Haven't tried Baldy, but I'm pretty sure they'll do just fine. I'm saving them for race days now until I get a second pair on sale. $225 is too rich my ass.
Loved the 1s - so light and awesome. Used for several ultras and felt great, esp running up hills. But they are super slippery in loose dirt and anything wet. Just not enough lugs or grip. Definitely found myself holding back a lot on downhills due to that. Will prob grab 2s once they go on sale and come down to a reasonable price.
Nice teview, thanks but I would like to hear more about the carbon plates and how it reacts with the fatigue of the leg that comes with the mileage during the race….👍
Aren't most hyper shoes in this category? Lots of (light) foam, with limited rubber outsoles. Lots of exposed foam midsole serving as outsole (foam in direct contact with the ground.) Some shoes can handle this. I think the foam saucony uses lasts well. (Endorphin 2-3) I have a lot of hokas, but I do think their midsoles lose cushion more quickly than others. 🤔
FWIW: i have higher volume feet that are just on the edge of being a bit too wide for a D in most shoes (hoka speedgoat 5s in wide are amazing for me). i got the original tecton x on sale this past winter and went up half a size and they feel great. the litebase is incredible, and i actually like the lacing system because it lets that slightly narrower toe box stay a bit looser for my feet. have not had trouble dialing in the fit.
The Tecton felt a little on the large side at the first try and I initially did not like them. After a few months I tried them again and loved them. For me the ideal road to trail shoe. Not made for technical trails but you can run easier Ultras in them or also use them for urban trails.
I have the TX2 paired with the Inov8 Boomerang insoles, and it really helped dial in the fit and a little extra bounce/cushion. The carbon does seem like a glorified rock plate, but does give a little pop. Not sure I’d drop $260CDN if given the choice again, lots of shoes below $200, including the discounted TX1, that would do about the same, if not better.
I did opt for discounted TX1 instead of 2, which is the right choice here. Besides the boomerang, another insole option is the yellow peba insole from a triumph17
Exactly my complains: bad lockdown, laces bite, thin and short and wrapping tonque. Might be my personal issue, but every run I'm trying to re-lace it somehow but still not good feeling with these shoes. Bad luck. Otherwise, midsole, cushioning great. Comparing with SG Evo, where I can forget about shoes during a run, this is not the case with X2.
I still don't get why they have discontunued the evo sg. Had much better lockdown as the sg5 and durability of the midsole was way better then sg5. My sg5 are dead after 350km - had the evo over 800km
I have some of the 1st version. Good shoe, but running fast on technical roccky terrain the carbin plate can make them unstable. It can fling your foot off in random directions. Other than that great shoe
The grip is not as good as the Speedgoat II's, III's, IV's, or V or Speedgoat Evo. I find the toe box a little problematic on the outer edges, gives blisters. But I do like the shoe. I also like the first version.
Just did a 12+ mile run in about mile nine the midsole just felt dead and really uncomfortable. For a shoe that is supposed to be in the ultra category, I am really concerned I wouldn’t be able to run longer than a marathon in them. Like the outsole a lot but the midsole doesn’t have anything on the exodus ultra. I do like to split carbon plate, but I’m still not convinced that plates at all should be in trail shoes.
What I wish they would have done is just pull the carbon plate out or fork it and or use a less harsh material. (Or just leave it out and keep the shoe as is.) Rift looks kinda odd, not sure it’s any better than Xodus, especially if they didn’t switch up the outsole rubber compound. Wish all brands would just suck it up and use VB megagrip.
I'm looking for a shoe that slots in between the Kiger 9s and Zegamas. Something bouncy, but flexible with ground feel and can go Ultra distances. Was thinking Kjerag, Rift, Catamount 2. @@tommilam6320
Maybe just find the OG TX1. TX2 not worth the price. At least with the Ultrafly you get ZoomX and more impulse from the plate. Both these shoes ideally need easy runnable terrain so use case actually quite limited for a trail shoe. For me a trail shoe needs to be way more versatile.
I love the max cushion of hokas and I’ve had several pair of speedgoats and they all go flat too fast just like you said. I start to feel rocks and roots after only about 200 miles. Seems like these will be the same. Thanks for the review. Also do speedland GS: Tam next since you’re reviewing +$200 shoes! Lol I bought a pair and love them and they seem to be lasting well and would love to hear your thoughts
this is both what i need to hear and what my wallet doesn't need to hear. i'm tired of retiring shoes at 250-300 miles and i have been DROOLING over the GS:TAM
I got a pair of Hokas and a pair of Nnormals the same month. The Hokas are built like a dish sponge in comparison. Literally one run and the foam runner sole starts to peel and disintegrate. For basically the same money Hoka is really a bad deal. I’ll tell you at the end of the year about the Nnormals durability but so far they are in a whole different class. It’s as if they were engineered not to break down - gasp!
Hoka really are bad when it comes to durability I've owned two pairs of Hokas and both had holes in the upper just after 100 miles I haven't considered them since
I feel like we need to have a wallet intervention with these brands. We (as a whole) need to stop paying these obnoxious prices. Every time we do, we allow them to keep charging and raising these prices.
The market dictates the pricing. Plenty of people (myself included) are perfectly OK with it for now. That’s why there’s 31 flavors and literally hundreds of other cheaper options, not to mention the original Tecton X 1 that’s basically the same shoe for a steep discount.
@@GriffRunning and eventually, I might not be able to purchase some of their higher-end models, I'll have effectively been "priced out," that's how it works. Then I'll have to settle for either their lower-end, entry-level offering like the Speedgoat or the Torrent, or I'll switch brands entirely which is much more likely. Happens all the time with many things in life, totally not a big deal and I won't lose sleep over it. Skechers seems to be getting better and better, they might earn my business!
That opener! An all timer! 😂 It’s unusual, I know, but I don’t know a Hoka trail shoe that I really like. Don’t mind their road shoes, however. Great review!
Why do you not talk more about the bounce, energy return, the feel when you running. Like looks, we can make our own opinion. But we can't now the feel of the shoe. Tip of the day, change your main cretaria when you review shoes 😊👌
Agree, too many shoe reviwers ignore the ride and transition of the shoe. For instance i like a more natural riding flexible shoe with ground feel for trail running rather than a stiffer rocker based profile. Rocker really interferes with forefoot striking. Liking the Kiger 9s over the Zegama at the moment for this reason. The Salomon R-camber (salomon trail pro 2) is also a nicer/gentler rocker than the Zegama.

Its not high price at all. You can buy them for 110-120€ in Europe
The shoe is awesome, light, fast and secure, i ran 50k ultra spartan race in them.

No way I'm "trying" a $200 shoe with durability concerns
Correct. Hard pass.
A reoccurring theme with Hoka...

Based on your review about durability have you tried these in a OCR race or anyone?

Drooling as well….just heard the outsole might be the issue with durability…
I’m starting to get the feeling that Hoka is falling behind what some other brands are doing.
This vs the adidas speed ultra?
I hate that profly, same on the Mach. It feels like you’re on a bosu balance board. Don’t feel stable in them at all.
Would you say it's a plated-Mach 5 for the trail?
That's exactly what it is. Mach X with plates
