    Great job Phil. The Z50 did a good job. More proof you don’t have to have the best camera to get out and do Bird photography.

    Phil you inspired me to come take a look for myself. I drove up from Atlanta on 01-29-2004 it was not the best day to try. I could see and hear the wonderful sounds but just too much ice on the ground to get there. I’ll be back!!!!

    I cannot find the 180-600mm anywhere (Backordered or New Item coming soon), so I bought the Nikon 2.0x Teleconverter and it made my 100-400mm a 200-800mm. f/9 was the lowest Aperture I could get but the image was fantastic. A tripod is a must but when trying to find a subject while panning I had to remove my head a couple of times away from the viewfinder to get it exactly on the subject. Hard to do and I got frustrated so I just used the LCD screen and when I pointed to the subject with my finger it took the shot. Cheers! I now own all of the Nikon Z Mirrorless Cameras plus all of the lenses cheaper than the 85mm f/1.2 have not invested in the trinity 14-24, 24-70 & 70-200 but do own the 17-28, 28-75, 70-180 f/2.8 and of course the illusive 180-600 I am now rethinking on purchasing this lens because of the weight, so with just the teleconverter on the 100-400mm is working for me. Cheers!

      Sounds like a great combination and someday you’ll find the 180-600 in stock and can use your tele converter with that one too!

      No, I took it down. Apparently I was accidentally shipped the lens before I should have been and I don’t want to get anyone in trouble who made an honest mistake. I’ll have it back up next week.

    Awesome video and images. As you know I too use the Z50 and it does ok. Like you, waiting for Nikon to get off their butts and get a replacement for the D500. It should have the kewl tracking as the Z8 & Z9. Don't really want to go FX lol.
    Need to make a trip down there soon myself. Keep up the great work sir.

    Phil great photos. As an owner of the Z50, I have been really reluctant to buy the Nikon 180-600mm, because of the AF on the Z50. But your photos may change my mind. Still waiting for Nikon to introduce a new APSC camera. Question are you using auto ISO when taking these photos?

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  5 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you! Yes, I use auto ISO almost all of the time.

    Great in-flight shots Phil. Do you often drag your hands as you take the shot or keep the camera steady on the tripod and anticipate the location of the bird? I assume dragging with this size of lense is not very easy. Also any post processing steps you have found to be effective? Keep up the great work.

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you! I pan the camera and follow the burden flight while making. Sometimes I do this handheld but this location there’s not much moving around so I use a tripod. For this shoot, I used the ball head but since then I have gotten a gimbal head that works even better. As far as post processing, I edit in Lightroom and then I use Topaz Denoise for sharpening and removing noise.

    Hi Phil. So far I think this lens outperforms the new Canon 200-800 even with a cheaper (Z50) camera body… Your thoughts…please. 😊

    • @PhilThach
      @PhilThach  5 месяцев назад

      It’s too early to tell for sure. I had better photography light the day I used the Nikon lens. Haven’t really been able to do any head to head testing. The Z50 has a fantastic sensor in terms of image quality. The auto focus system is not the very best and the battery leaves a lot to be desired but you’ll never hear me complain about image quality from the Z 50. I think it’s possible that of all my telephoto zoom lenses of 500 mm or more I might rank this 180 -600 2nd behind the Canon RF 100-500.
