Who is responsible for the Amazon deforestation fires in Brazil? | DW Analysis

  • Deforestation fires are surging in the Amazon, eliminating more square kilometers of rainforest this year than they have since 2009. In the Brazilian Amazon, fires are a common means of clearing the land -- land that is worth five times more without the forest than with the forest -- for cattle and soy fields. Brazil is the world’s leading exporter of beef and soy, but there’s also a high demand for these goods domestically.
    There are preservation laws still on the books in Brazil, but Bolsonaro’s cut funding for their enforcement. Spending on forest inspection in 2020 is less than a third of what it was in 2019. Part of the Amazon can be reforested but time is critical: scientists estimate that once more than 20% of the rainforest is gone, recovery won't be possible and the Amazon will go into a process of savanization.

    2:37 this is misinformation, Is false that deforestation is growing because of Cattle in Brazil. The technology involved in our agriculture made it possible to reduce the cattle area by 12% without affecting our productivity.
    The area of native forests well preserved in Brazil is equivalent to 43 countries in Europe.

    If the world want to keep Amazon rainforest, it should not be based on keeping Brazilians poor.
    The only way to protect The rainforest, is to find a way to make Brazilians as wealthy as the Europeans, without destroying the rainforest. Currently no such plan is available or proposed. All the world, especially the Western Nations, is turning blind eyes to the poverty in Brazil while accusing their people of destroying the rainforest for money. Proposals like paying countries that own large forests for forest maintenance could be a very good start. Help, don’t just stand by and accuse.

Ilegal gold mining is one of the issues in the forest, and each mining machine costs at least 100k USD. I can assure you it is not the poor people who is buying them.

      @@ToneyCrimson Why do you think that anyone wins burning a forest?
      1. If you are burning a land that is protected by law, to put cattle, you gonna be in jail soon. Will take time, but you will. And your cattle won't be safe. Ask yourself, why have an illegal cattle farm? is a bet?
      2. Burning forest to extract wood is counterproductive, that way you'll only extract wood charcoal ...
      There are lot's of things about Amazon that is not addressed by this video or anyone on internet that NEVER have put their foot on Brazil or some south American country...
      Things here are very different from what you see on TV or hear from CNN. Stop watching TV and come here.
      The right way to stop illegal wood extraction is stopping the foreigners from buying wood from the North of Brazil. Is that easy. But, forest fires can't be 100% controlled, as in the dry season everywhere has a burn.

    • @caioribeiro3104
      @caioribeiro3104 3 года назад +2

      The problem is, *very few of this fires are actually caused by poor people.* That's because costs _a lot_ in equipment to cut those enormous trees. What happen is like the _tragedy of the commons:_ some *farmers* would love to make space for more cattle, since the loss of on climate stability is shared globally, while the profit of the cattle is not. And any farmer whom doesn't go along out of his consciousness is surpassed by his competitors.
      To prevent that, we create severe laws and fines. For one, any seized equipment (like tractor, or excavator) is destroyed, causing a loss of thousands of dollars. So, they have to evaluate the risk/reward of being caught. But, since Bolsonaro raise to power, *the risk has never been so low.* He reduced the investments on fiscalization, reduced the value of the fines, and prohibited the destruction of seized equipment.
      So, the economic plan isn't actually to save poor people, but to give farmers an incentive to keep the florest up. Like, if is more profitable to keep the forest than turn it on pasture, they would keep the forest.

    At 0:39 the darker grey area is larger than the Amazon area actually is, part of this area is Cerrado (a savanna vegetation area). The deforestation and fires compared to last year decresead inside brazilian amazon according to NASA reports. Amazon is an area with the worst soil for agriculture in Brazil, it is too poor on minerals and it remains in large areas flooded most of the year. There's no budget for rangers since Dilma was in office back in 2015 when most of law enforcement budgets were cut.

      @Klauss Bmann Thank you for asking, shows that you are sincerely interested. So let me tell you. The truth is that foreign countries have been stealing riches from the Amazon (minerals, precious gems, wood, bio-piracy, etc) for decades, in agreement with previous leftist governments that have been bribed by them to turn a blind eye. Now, Bolsonaro is stopping this. There is now a very strong military operation going on in the Amazon catching all the misdeeds in the area, informing us of all the robbery that has been going on for decades, much of which perpetrated by European NGOs and their Brazilian marionettes. The people who had been stealing are not happy about this. The truth is that the Amazon is more than 80% preserved and that Brazil has the largest index in the world for native vegetation preservation, as well as for clean energy matrix. The rainforest does not catch fire, it is too humid for that. Fires occur in the surroundings, in areas that had already been deforested, according to the law. They occur every year during the dry season and it is a natural occurrence. The same areas burn over and over again every hear. The truth is that the Amazon rainforest is NOT the lungs of the world; the oceans are. All the oxygen generated by the rainforest is also absorbed by it; this is a scientific fact. Therefore, we resent very much foreigners who keep on referring to the Amazon as "our house", "our planet", etc. There are huge financial interests and massive international greed behind every video such as this, shamefully presented by DW.

    • @mariabrasileira3327
      @mariabrasileira3327 3 года назад

      It is also important to mention that, although Brazil has a very successful agricultural business that feeds 1/3 of the world population, none of it is done anywhere near the Amazon. It is done in the central and southern parts of the country and only 27% of the Brazilian territory is used in agriculture (crops + cattle raising). Therefore, we have a lot of space to expand our agriculture before going around destroying rainforests. There, again, there are huge financial and commercial interests involved: competitor food exporting countries try to convince the world that Brazilian food production destroys the Amazon, which is not true. These are the facts, very easy to check.

      An aggression against a sovereign and democratic country would have serious consequences for you, we have recently been negotiating with India to purchase anti-aircraft systems and we have mastered half the conponents to make a nuclear warhead, anything you plan against Brazil we will not think twice before leaving of the NPT "treaty of non ploriferation of nuclear weapons" and producing nuclear warheads i bet the US would hate a Latin American neighbor with nuclear weapons.

      I actually agree, global demand is increasing extremely rapidly for resources and beef from the Amazon , the Amazon has suffered extreme droughts and dried up many times in recent years and gas dried out and turned into Savannah already in many areas, things are only only intensifying and I think within 2 years from now after another 2 years of extensive logging I think the Amazon tainforest will suddenly crack under the pressure and completely collapse

    Sou brasileiro e moro em São Paulo. A impressão que tenho que uma parcela dos brasileiros, em especial os de baixa renda e com pouco estudo, tem pensamento deprimente justificando o desmatamento e queimadas no Brasil com situações extremas ou sem nexo de causa, do tipo:
    __” É uma mentira desmatamentos e queimadas...”
    __ “A Amazônia é nossa e fazemos o que quiser...”
    __“Os estrangeiros estão querendo limitar a capacidade do agronegócio do Brasil...”
    __”Os estrangeiros estão querendo roubar nossos metais preciosos e nossa biodiversidade... ”
    __“Nós brasileiros temos o direito de desmatar nossas florestas já que vocês desmataram as suas...”
    __”O trabalhador do campo precisa sobreviver, e geram riqueza para o país...”
    Por mais que muitos brasileiros acham ruim desmatamento, acreditam que a floresta consegue se recompor naturalmente ou por intervenção humana, esquecem da extinção de várias espécies animais e vegetais.
    A grande parte da população brasileira não vive do agronegócio nem do garimpo de ouro. As grandes empresas do agronegócio no Brasil são subsidiadas com crédito governamental, possuem processo mecanizado/automatizado gerando pouco emprego. Alguns defensores do desmatamento justificam vitimizando o trabalhador do campo, mas é difícil entender como um trabalhador sem recurso pode precisar de tantas terras para sobreviver.
    É lamentável escutar de brasileiros justificativas para o desmatamento sem nexo de causa, em atividades econômicas extrativistas de recurso natural escasso que geram pouco retorno para o país, em que no final o custo-benefício para nação não compensa.

      Não estamos Justificando o desmatando seu burro. Você não representa nem 1% dos brasileiros. Moro no litoral da Bahia, mais perto da Amazônia, e posso te dizer que a maioria das pessoas a minha volta, escolheriam preservar a floresta do que destroi-la
      É obrigação do Brasil proteger a Amazônia, e não de outros países, porque ela está no nosso território, não no território francês e americano, que aliás, eles mesmo destruíram e não tem nem 60% do território deles com a floresta nativa preservada
