- Happy Veterans Day, with heartfelt gratitude to all those who have toiled and sacrificed in the service of our country.
A lesser-known consoling letter written by President Abraham Lincoln to Miss Mary Frances "Fanny" McCullough following her father's death in battle during the American Civil War.
Lincoln had befriended the McCullough family in Illinois long before his presidency. When their father, William McCullough, was killed in combat, Fanny (21) had become inconsolably distressed and locked herself in her room. At the request of a mutual friend speaking on behalf of the worried family, President Lincoln wrote this short but sincere letter to Fanny, providing a touching insight into President Lincoln's own experience with depression.
