I go to a Christian university that believes in complimentarianism and they are fairly strong about how they feel about this. It is true that some are on different points of the spectrum like you said, with some being reasonable and others being very strict about it. The churches I have gone to have normally been more egalitarian, so it was a new experience for me to go to a place where I was in the minority. Granted most of them do emphasize that they believe that women are equal in dignity to men, I have to admit that I am not convinced by some of their arguments. I dated a girl who was complimentarian and she was not too thrilled when I applied for a job at a church where a woman was a pastor. She also later expressed to me that she wanted to see me more as a "head of the household" type person and with that and other things our relationship came to an end. I am currently researching the topic more to find out about what people believe and how I can better understand what I believe and if it is biblical to believe such. I admit that I feel a little uneasy about debating it because sometimes I worry that I will be judged as not holding a view of Scripture as being authoritative, but that is why I am researching, to be able to better explain my arguments to others in a loving way and to promote dialogue, not unnecessary division.
Cody, thanks for your honest response. I, too, have grown up egalitarian in both the home and church. I'm researching this more because I recently moved because I got married (to an amazing man!) and attend a church that's staunchly complementarian and quotes Piper more than Paul, and never quotes Jesus when defending these views. There are three sites that have been extremely helpful in how I have been able to use the Bible to defend egal: The Junia Project, Christians for Biblical Equality, and Marg Mowczko. As for scholars: N.T. Wright, Also, the same can be said of complemtarians in not taking Scripture seriously...when I pointed to the story of Deborah in Judges 4-5, the pastor told me that Deborah had NO authority and that since she was married, she had the covering of a man. I was shocked. Deborah with no authority? She is the only judge who was also a prophet, and ruled for 40 years, and it was honoring to God!! She also told Barak, a man what to do, and he obeyed. Same deal with Priscilla...he minimized what she did, and Nymphia (Colassians 4:15) the house church pastor. He laughed when I said that the only time a married couple is described as making a decision was in mutual submission and prayer in 1 Cor 7. Stay strong!! There is so much scripture defending and uplifting women as equals in every way. Look at Jesus, the feminist.
@@jambrown7 Maybe can't judge just based on the info you have given.... but sounds like you are in a bad church? John Piper himself probably wouldn't want you to attend a church that quotes him more than scripture. JP's ministry is all about 'looking at the book'.

Hi Hayley, I am serving as an elder in a Vineyard Church in Melbourne, Australia. At the beginning of this year, we invited a woman to assume the position of Lead Pastor, and she is doing a fabulous job! As an eldership, we didn't take time weighing the 'pros and cons' of the 'complementarian vs egalitarian' debate but simply moved forward in the way we sensed God was leading us. But I appreciate the clear and simple approach you've taken in this video to state the positions on this issue. FYI - we definitely haven't lost any people because of this appointment. And I pray that as we go on, there will be some who will be drawn to join us because we have been somewhat 'egalitarian'.
