STREAMLINERS RACE TO THE NORTH: LMS "Coronation Scot" vs LNER "Coronation"

- Until the nationalisation of Britain's railways in 1948, there was a fierce rivalry between the companies operating the West Coast Mainline and the East Coast Mainline from London to Scotland. This resulted in several incarnations of the "Races to the North" from London to Scotland.
Arguably the climax with the most spectacular, powerful and fastest trains was with the streamlined "Coronation Scot" and "Coronation" services operated by the LMS and LNER respectively.
Running from London Euston to Glasgow Central, the flagship LMS train using Staniers mighty Princess Coronation pacifics, stopped only briefly at Carlisle for a crew change. Meanwhile the LNER's London Kings Cross to Edinburgh Waverley service was non-stop and was made possible with the famous corridor tenders attached to the brand new A4 steam locomotives. This meant that a relief crew could relax and "ride on the cushions" back in the train before relieving their colleagues for the onward journey.
Ever since, its been widely debated which was the better / faster train, and this will continue without conclusion, as neither company could claim actual victory (both trains arrived at different destinations).
Of course the LNER A4's went on to claim and retain the world speed record with legendary 4468 "Mallard" attaining 126mph. But then the Princess Coronation's were undoubtedly more powerful locomotives as they had the disadvantage of having to tackle the northern sections of the WCML with its twisting bends and fearsome climbs of Shap and Beattock. Relatively speaking, the ECML that the A4's operated on was a race track and many believe that a Princess Coronation / Duchess could have snatched Mallard's record away if it had the proper opportunity down Stoke Bank.
I personally believe that both companies were the winner, especially their marketing departments. The Coronation Scot and Coronation fast became icons of world steam and Art Deco styling.
Although not aiming to be prototypical, this fast paced video is a bit of fun that attempts to recreate the speed and drama of steam locomotives working hard and fast. Of course the 2 different trains were perhaps only just about within whistling distance of each other at Euston and Kings Cross, and as far as I know would never be in sight of one another. But they do make a stirring sight and sound hurtling around the layout with some parallel running.
Both of these locos are the superb Hornby models, and both have been visiting Neville Grove for weathering. The beautiful 4490 "Empire of India" was also renamed, numbered and rebranded with silver digits and letters for Ashley of @LNER_steam This was one of the 5 A4's dedicated to "The Coronation" and included silver trims and handrails that have been faithfully added here. With this loco, Ashley now has all 5 of the Coronation A4's in his collection, and many more besides. Do make sure to check out his fantastic new RUclips channel: / @lner_steam
All we need now is for Hornby to announce the complete matching "Coronation" train complete with the streamlined "Beavertail" observation car that brought up the rear of each rake.
6220 "Coronation" along with the matching and complete "Coronation Scot" is a stunning train. Recently released by Hornby, this has again been treated to some polished weathering to give a well looked after but used appearance. I will definitely produce more videos of this sublime model in the near future!
Archive sound used in this video was recorded by Peter Handford and features courtesy of Old Thundridge records.
I don't think I've ever enjoyed a railway video as much as that. You captured the drama, the power and the romance of high speed travel in that age. Awesome.
Thanks so much that’s wonderful to hear 👊
Oh my god this looks real. The super-detail and weathering on the models and layout + camera work really sells it. The paint texture/weathering on the engines is impossibly good, and the detailed brickwork and convincing grass on these locations... Wow. I'm blown away this is amazing!
Thank you so much 😀Glad you like it all and enjoyed watching!
Hands down the most incredible model railway video I’ve ever seen. Even with my bias there is just no denying that fact. You’ve absolutely outdone yourself and this will be a video I’ll watch again and again! 🙌🏻
Thanks Ashley, so glad you enjoyed it! It was a privilege to be involved with your project of creating all 5 Coronation A4’s what a site that must be on your layout 💨💨💨💨💨
You telling me this was a model?
@@EtBEF_02yea
I was holding my breath there for a minute to see who won!!!! Detail live shot added to the "realism". Superb as usual👍🏻👍🏻 (the blue one was my favourite!!)
Mmm yeah not sure who won - probably the LMS / LNER marketing departments. Thanks for watching 👍
Lovely pair of streamlined locos
Even better than your last one on the new Coronation Scot, makes the "Race" come alive, well done.
Thanks! I know it wouldn’t have happened quite like this but a fun “what if” and comparison. Glad you enjoyed.
1:49 "Hey! Watch where your going Speedster!"
Haha, yeah the 8F was rather barged out of the way there wasn’t it?! 😂
Didnt expect the king to reply but Yea Lol
@@tommytheblackfive4467 😂 I try and reply to as many comments as I can, I’m so grateful to people for watching and engaging 👍👍👍 But I have a bit of catching up to do at the moment 😅
Often model railway operators run their trains at out of scale fast speeds. In this video you are running the trains at HIGH SPEED and it's awesome! What a brilliant idea. With your layout which can accommodate the two trains you really brought the race to life. The excitement was palpable and you easily forget they are just models!
Even the Railroad Teaks look stellar behind a proper loco, always a joy to see!
Thanks, yeah they scrub up well with some polish and weathering, not bad for a 40 year old model.
@@NEVILLEGROVE I know you once did a short with the union pacific big boy and American rollingstock, but do you have any other American locomotives and rollingstock in your collection and have you ever considered using them?
Brilliant, just brilliant. What an excellent video. The close ups, the sound track even to the loint of som music in a nearby town as the train passes.
You get a real sence of the real thing.
Hands down the best model railway vid I have ever seen.🎉🎉
Thanks very much that’s very kind and generous of you to say so, glad you enjoyed it!
Probably one of the best model railway videos ever posted on RUclips - absolutely outstanding.
Wow, thanks John! Very kind of you to say so, thank you very much indeed.
Thanks for more phenomenomal videography.
My pleasure! Thanks and thank for watching!
Best model train video EVER
Best camera action with well synchronized audio
Im suprised at 3:23
Amazing to hear, thank you very much for watching and commenting 👍
Wonderfull Thrilling............Nice Touch With The 8F On The Slow Line Pleasure to View well done.
Brilliant videography, and editing. Great viewing. Thanks
Thanks for watching 👍👍👍
Perfect videography. Perfect sound effects. Perfect weathering and texture. And, that's all it needs.
Cheers Gordon! 👍👍👍
Fantastic video. You capture really good chaotic scenes in your videos. Keep up the fantastic work.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed!
One Fantastic video, Thank you.
Thank you Peter for watching and for the kind words 👍
Woah, I thought this was real for a split second, great layout!
Awesome! Thank you very much and thanks for watching!
My gosh, the model work here is just incredible. Fuck, I thought this was real footage before I looked at the comments around the one minute mark.
Awesome! Glad it fooled you for a second and that you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching 👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE thanks :)
WOW. Simply superb stuff. Being from Berwick upon Tweed I’m always going to come down on the LNER side , but both locomotives are absolute beauties. Imagine being a schoolboy in the inter war years and being able to see beasts like these at your local station. I’d never be in the house! Keep up the good work , your videos are amazing - in fact I prefer watching them to most of the TV programmes on nowadays! ;)
Haha thanks Duncan, thats a wonderful to know! Yeah it really would have been spectacular. Would probably have to get on a push bike though in those days to get over to Shap from Berwick - quite a ride but worth it!
Amazing work. Well done and thank you.
What an absolutely brilliant video, really well done! And excellent top class models too . Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
The fact that the sound effects are perfectly timed up with the steam locomotives is just awesome XD
That put a smile on my face! - really exciting to watch and I loved the real cab insert to add to the drama.
Incredibly realistic models and layout - sooo beautiful 😍
Thank you very much indeed 👍
Absolutely outstanding! Superb camera work and truly excellent sound editing. I'm blown away by it. Thank you.
Wow, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Can’t say any more than AMAZING
Thanks Mark, much appreciated.
Wow that looks great what you done today Neville.Great video lots of detail.
Thank you! Cheers!
Honest thought it was real to start loved it mate
Excellent! Thanks very much! 👍👍👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE no problem you have a nice day kind sir
Wish they were still running.
Excellent and I thank you. I used it in my tweets to promote the “coming soon” Railway Race to the North. James Galliel.
Great video of an iconic era and race
Very stylish locos, would love to see 6229 out on the mainline.
This is such a sight to see. The LMS and LNER’s greatest locomotives racing.
Awesome! Thank you very much for watching!
Great action of the two legends in OO-scale. Very nice video production ! Thanks for sharing. Cheers, Filip
Thank you too for watching!
Superb video and a one off superb shots of 2 iconic services to the North well done
I have to say I am very impressed with your video’s. Use of some great camera angles with some nice close ups too. Add this to a fantastic layout with subtly weathered stock & you have a recipe for some great footage.
Awesome, thank you very much for all your kind words. The layout is very much still a work in progress with much detail & weathering to add, but it does a job!
This is awsome! Two trains racing against each other is an amazing sight to see.
these are really cool, thanks for posting these!
No problem, thanks for watching! 👍👍👍
This is incredible, the sound, trains, and quality of the camera footage is fantastic.
took me 20 seconds to realise this is a model, these models and there realism has peaked!
Current RTR models are exceptionally good, and can always be enhanced with some careful weathering.
The race north was won by Neville Grove hands down, a masterful video as usual.
Beautiful work on the weathering.. Loved watching this.
Thanks very much and thanks for watching 👍
I love how metal the engines look, its tricky to make them shiny but not toy-like. But these look insanely realistic, great job!
Amazing i love how u edit it and the creative keep it up love the lay out it lookes soo real
Thank you so much!! The layout is nowhere near finished but its good enough for a backdrop to these wonderful trains.
You have one brilliant layout and you can most certainly get some great shots! Keep up the good work!
Thank you very much! Plenty more videos in the pipeline...
Fantastic train video 👍👍👍.
Greetings Gert
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 👍
That was honestly beautiful. Two amazing trains, taken advantage of hornby's beautiful and spitting image of them and making them race. Fantastic dynamic! Please do Flying Scotsman vs another a3 pacific, that would be great!
Thanks very much, I'll keep this format in mind for future videos, although I don't own a single A3 pacific as yet but hopefully that will change soon enough.
This is so cool and quite realctic
Awesome thanks! Glad you enjoyed!
Now that was a great video. At first I thought it was real.
Wow, thanks! Glad you liked it!
@@NEVILLEGROVE No thank you Sir for allowing use to see your skill. I'm just getting back into the hobby. And I thought lets do N scale. My old eyes have a time trying to do it. Can you tell me why British engines have no head light? I have all ways wondered why. Have a good one.
@@tudrow6087 Oh good luck with your new project, there are some fantastic N gauge models these days 👌
As usual, filming and editing are absolutely amazing. But I have to say that with this latest one, you really nailed it masterfully 👍👍👍
Thanks Jean, quite ambitious in parts trying to capture both in the same shot - good fun and decent exercise! 😅
I thought this was the real thing for the first few minutes. Wonderful video with incredible modelling and film making skills.
Phantasic Models and very well filmed
Awesome thank you!
Brilliant Steve, loved watching 👍👍👍
Thanks, glad you enjoyed watching!
This , with a bit of artistic licence , and no small amount of CGI , could become a fantastic big screen movie . The story of Stanier ; his friendship , and rivalry with Greeley ; Greeley’s friendship with Bugatti ; pre war trips to Germany to check out the opposition , including the Rail Zeppelin .
What a movie that could be !
Yes that would be quite something!
Greeley? or do you mean Gresley?
Awesome video mate! I love how they use their own lines like it really was in that era
Ah thanks very much, tried to give it some plausibility, but really its just a bit of fun not grounded in authenticity. As far as I know, their respective railways out of London were never in sight of each other, but would have been within whistling distance.
Nice video.
The layout looks outstanding. 👍
Nicely videoed too. Excellent work.
It must be nice to have the space to run competing trains side by side.
Most of us are stuck with islend layouts due to space and functionality restrictions.
Well done on your layout design and build.
Beautiful job.
Happy Modelling.
Superb … thank you so much … 🙏
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Wonderful, thank you.
The way the video is shot is just magnificent it's just so good
Thank you so very much that’s really kind of you to say so 🙏
No problem
Alright this looks incredible, that’s a very awesome model railway
The weathering and paint textures are seriously cool
Fantastic weathering and a fabulous model
The coronation class especially duchess of hamilton is what got me into LMS
Although I now like bagnalls
Its a magnificent machine, well worth a visit to the NRM for it alone.
1:47 Henry from Thomas and friends
Made me smile!👍😉😊😊
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Nice shot at 2:20 of actual firing on the footplate. It blends in seamlessly with the rest of the footage.
Great video
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it 👍
What a Great video no words.......
Glad you liked it, thanks for watching!
I agree with the person below me because this is so smooth and the best layout I have ever seen and this inspires me to make my own one good on ya mate :)
Wow, thank you! Good luck with your layout!
@@NEVILLEGROVE Thanks
I thought the station at the start was real, nice job!
Thanks very much!
Jolly good show!
Absolutely spectacular
Cool thanks! 🙏
Very good piece of period colour film (Pathe?) .. Very rare. So often it's black and white.
No its all real...... I saw the fireman shoveling coal into the firebox....so it must be real.
We all love Nigel Gresley, but I must admit that William Stanier's Coronation streamline loco shape and the livery of its whole train were really elegant.
Amazing. Love it 😍 👍 😎
Thank you! Cheers!
Just when you think that Neville Grove videos can't get any better.........................
Haha, thanks Steve and glad you enjoyed.
Fantastic video 😊
Since you made the first video with Coronation Scot you have close coupled the coaches. Your skills, layout and trains are above and beyond superb. It would be great if you did some 'How to ' videos, like how to do close coupling of Hornby coaches, weathering, etc..
Thanks very much, yes this set has been weathered for a customer and I cited the close couplings / corridor connections too which was easy as they’re all supplied with the coaches. Just a case of swapping them over 👍
Beautiful subtle weathering on the Coronation Scot loco and train. A huge difference from the original 'out of the box' video
Many thanks Mr T! The blue really comes up nicely with some polish / weathering, I must admit it does make a huge difference to the overall appearance.
This video is amazing
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed!
Thats some good filming. I thought it was real at first
Absolument et totalement somptueux réseaux ferroviaire Anglais .
Bravos 1000 fois ces incroyables.
This looks like a british transport films production, oh my god i love it
Excellent what a great comment to receive. Glad you enjoyed it 👍👍👍
There's just something so lovely about seeing two of the most famous streamlined locomotives running together! The level of detail of what you have is superb, and I especially liked how you've got 4490 _Empire of India_ as the A4/LNER representative; that's one I've always been pretty fond of, myself.
Ah thanks Alex, glad you enjoyed it! A bit of fun really but an interesting comparison between these to giants of British steam. Yes I like EoI too, it’s the 5th Coronation out of the 5 that I’ve helped recreate for @lnersteam and just happened to be the one here at the same time as 6220. Thanks for watching.
Excelente video
Thanks very much!
Meanwhile Henry is pulling some crucks and then out of nowhere a big streamlined engine passes him
Peter* (if fan made characters count)
British Series Thomas The Tank Engine is one of the reasons why I became addicted to steam locomotive engine trains
AWESOME film 🙂
Cheers Adrian 👍
Good video
Thanks! 👍
Absolutely adore this, especially seeing the especially grimy goods engine get overtaken, some of these angles must have been near impossible?
Thanks and thanks for watching, i’m getting plenty of practice with these sorts of shots now!
@@NEVILLEGROVE the weathering looks brilliant too!
@@lordluffington2351 cool thanks! 👍👍👍
Done. (And superb video btw!!)
Brilliant 👏
Cool thanks! 👍
Fantastic scenery! How did you do your wall backdrop?
It is a customised version of the ID Backscenes products. The chap who designed them there has sadly passed away, but it may be possible to get them customised by Scalology who have taken them over. Off the shelf versions are widely available however through numerous retailers.
Dynamite mate dynamite action packed
Thanks Noel, yeah pretty frantic this one!
Brilliant!
MY GOD THE CORONATION IS JUST- WOW
It’s a stunning looking train / model.
excellent
Very nicely done - indeed.
Two things about the A4. A shame LNER insisted on painting the front black, but otherwise when standing on a platform - which 99% of people would have done in the day - the A4 appears the sleeker because the wheels are so nicely hidden.
Thanks! Yes possibly, and it has a greater rake to the front nose. But it struck me when working on "Coronation" (my first streamlined Stanier after many A4's) how much attention to detail was put in by the LMS drawing office (and commendably Hornby). For example the handrails terminate by curving and disappearing into the casing whereas on the A4 they abruptly end on a spigot as per conventional steam loco designs. The complex and compound curves of the LMS streamlined casing is also very impressive - seeing 6229 at the NRM for the first time was breathtaking.
@@NEVILLEGROVE Very good points.
It was so realistic I thought it was real
Awesome thank you very much for saying so and for watching!
Love it.
That’s awesome thanks! 👍👍👍
This popped up in my browser again Steve. I thought at first it was a new video.
You need to duplicate the pair with the LNER A4 now pulling Hornby's new Coronation coaches.
