HOLY COW was NOT expecting V.VIII and V.III cut lines - it adds so much context to what happens to them during the Liberator ending. The fact that this marks the only conversation between V.II and V.III is crazy as well; why the hell did they cut all this?!
I wouldn't be surprised if, originally, the Pater dialogue at 01:28 would trigger if you did "Intercept the Redguns" while the O'Keeffe version that follows up would trigger if you did "Ambush the Vespers" instead. Real fascinating stuff, adds so much context to the ground battle.
I wonder if it also means that Flatwell now pilots the STEEL HAZE, which we know survives "Unknown Territory Survey", because the TSUBASA gets wrecked in the alt version of the same mission? This is great stuff @GreyCaliber, thanks a ton for getting it out there!
EDIT: But now this makes me wonder what the hell Freud was doing while all this was going on?! Was he fighting the IB-07 for giggles? Was he lost in the Xylem's generator rooms on the other side of the ship? Did he fall off the boat? Crazy.

Freud never appears because Snail never demands for his assistance in a battle, and you either taking out Snail in the mission beforehand or Snail just being Snail leads to him taking the fight personally. It’s even noted in the “regain control of the xylem” mission that there’s 6 Vespers attacking the ship, leaving 2 specific Vespers out in which those being Rusty because he was already presumed dead by Arquebus and Freud because he’s never there as he was either killed or he literally just does not care because there’s not a single thing that could give him a good fight

That would leave only Freud, Hawkins and Rusty, the latter of whom has already abandoned the Vespers at this point after "Unknown Territory Survey".
Freud just vanishes in both the Liberator and ALLMIND endings, with zero explanation.

Hawkins would be dead even if you don't aid Flatwell in ambushing the vespers. It's how Pater goes from V.VIII to V.III.

It's too bad this dialogue went unused, but as it is the mission has a lot of dislogue already. It would feel too cluttered with nonstop dialogue and have the possibility of skipping dislogue if you move too fast.
The other option would have been to make the mission longer but that's not always simple. Right now the mission's a good length, a rallying cry to lift spirits and make you feel good about fighting with Rusty and taking out the Smart Cleaner again more quickly.
All leading to a final battle against Snail and a new Balteus, a great way for the player to see how far they've come by getting a second shot at one of the hardest (for the time) bosses in the game.
Definitely would have loved to hesr this in game though.

  • @zahylon5993

Given how thight packed is the mission, it was unavoidable to cut down all this dialogue, but it does add a lot of needed context for the battle on the ground. The RLF throwing it all to gain control of the plant. The Vespers loosing the battle.
But there's too many variables, Raven already had Offed Maeterlink for sure, but Swinburne, Pater and Hawkins could also be dead already, leaving only O'Keeffe and Freud.
Could Flatwell, Dolmayan , Freddie and Rokumonsen take down Freud?
IMHO, for the mission, instead of fighting another Smart Cleaner, Raven and Rusty should have faced Freud.

I knew the final chapter was way too short compared to the others! Especially with the whole background being an all-out war and the like. I feel like they really wanted to make the Liberator of Rubicon ending have a lot more since so much of the ship goes unused. It probably would've given them time to add in these planned voice lines, and add in the other ground-based bosses they were missing that they were clearly going for with the setup of the Smart Cleaner. That section *always* felt so jarring and out of place, like we were supposed to take on each of the bosses we faced with Rusty this time, but it got cut short.
