Well seems like you misunderstood. You are not supposed to be as “lean as possible”, only lean enough to be healthy and still make gains. If you start off nearly shredded because you are naturally skinny then yes, you need to eat more. If you are already fat, no need to be in a surplus because recomposition is possible as an overweight novice lifter.

If you want to focus on strenght you are going to have to eat more and be "fat". If you want to look good naked you may be better off trying to stay as lean as you can and not add too much calories so that you do not ruin your physique. That of course is if your body and mind can whistand that.
You can't be super strong, be super lean and have big muscles at the same time unless you are on gear or have ultra rare genetics which would mean you wouldn't be struggling being lean in the first place...

I'm glad people are talking about this. Around spring of 2020 I was finished club swimming and was 6'4 165lbs (I'm not good at BF% so I couldn't tell you what) and was finally ready to bulk and gain weight, then I found Greg's channel and his content had me convinced I needed to keep cutting. My parents were worried about how skinny I was and I thought they were crazy when in reality I was probably losing my mind. I ended up despising food and eating until I met someone who helped me out of my situation. I hope that more young people wake up and realize what he does is a fad and extremely unhealthy for normal people.

As someone who used to suffer with a restrictive eating disorder, at my lowest weight of 110 lbs(about 49kg ) I certainly didn't have abs. I hardly had any muscle at all, little to no body fat either. You could see all of my ribs and most of my spine. My stomach wasn't just flat, it sunk inwards. I was the opposite of fat, but thanks to people saying things like that, I felt like I was. Saying that if you're fat if you don't have abs isn't just absurd, it's damaging.
For those concerned, I am currently at a much healthier weight of about 165lbs (around 75kg) and though I still need to work a lot on my physical strength, I'm finally starting to show some real improvement now that I'm consistently training and working to find a diet that I can handle (severely restricting your calorie intake for a long time shrinks your stomach, I do not recommend it) I squatted my first 45 recently and I'm pretty quickly working towards doubling it. Fitness has really been helpful in moving forward from my past issues and getting more comfortable in my own skin, but if someone like Greg had talked to me, or if I had ever watched him, I probably wouldn't have started this journey in the first place.

I'm a heavy bulk person. It's a personal decision but I've got my best results when eating 500-1000 calorie surplus everyday when training well hard. I favorise moderate and heavy bulks over small calorie surplus bulks, I think it gives this extra momentum of energy, motivation and tremendous results on the long term which maingaining or small calorie surplus won't offer. Plus I just like to enjoy eating a lot and training a lot. Calorie maintenance only works for the beginner phase or people using enhancements. It's just another fake idea that enhanced athletes couldn't spot because they did not have to do it naturally thus never realised their mistakes/blind spots. It's good we're calling out this BS!

I think you're right about Damage Control - I think Greg Doucette started off with great advice meant for the majority of people (who are overweight). He's said as much - he doesn't think most people need to bulk because most people start off overweight to begin with, definitely most people that are watching his channel for fat loss tips.
I think he's definitely changed his mind on a bunch of things - even in the last few days, he had a video where he mentioned that a bodybuilder on stage is *not* how most people want to look.

He's a charlatan pure and simple. He'll modify his messages video to video to gain audience share. Most people hear what they want to hear so many a charlatan will cover as many bases as possible as a person will agree with what they want to hear and kind of filter out the rest. People say all of his advice isn't bad, which is true (no charlatan would be effective purely disconnected from reality), but its so all over the place that people don't really know how to use it, so they buy the book, training program, consume more content etc... until they get the 100% failsafe, silver bullet to their dreams.

I pretty much bulked from the time I started lifting to my senior year of college, so like 14 years old to 23 years old. I was never worried about "getting fat" in fact some days I would eat so much my stomach would be killing me. But food was everywhere, between the meal plan's all you can eat buffets to random people handing out pizza on campus to chipotle being within walking distance from campus. It was definitely the best progress I ever made and my body fat didn't even increase that much. I went from 150-180 and it was only once I got into the 180s that I needed to clean things up and cut down a bit, so if you're a young dude in your teens and 20s stop cutting. You should only cut if you're extremely overweight and obese but other than that, bulk away. Just eat as much healthy whole food as possible and limit junk like candy and soda and fast food but other than that have at it.

Hi, first time viewer here...I'm glad the algorithm led me here. First off, let me say you did an incredible job on this video. Same honors and kudos to revival fitness as well. You made some great points about Coach Greg especially about how his own genetics and ideal body type differs from most people. It really is a great point because we cannot expect the same results with the same methods compared to the genetic outliers. However, I think your points do not outright invalidate Coach Greg's philosphies completely as well. For example, there are people maingaining through intermittent fasting that's growing muscle efficiently. I also agree that Coach Greg's views on being fat if your abs aren't visble may contribute to body dysmorphia in impressionable viewers and he should be more mindful of the impact his words carry. I still do find value in a lot of Coach Greg's philosophies and knowledge. I think a more fair assessment of his methods might have been to speak to him directly and perhaps try his coaching as well. In my experience, most people that train themselves don't have a good mind muscle connection (mostly due to ego lifting and not exercising time under tension), adequate sleep, and does not progressively overload. The fitness industry is filled with real misinformation and negativity....and I don't really think that Coach Greg definitely fits in that category. I find value in all 3 point of views. P.S. Happy New Years.

@@thiagoneto3671 very true...also, when you make content callin out other "bad" influencers such as Coach Greg does, it was bound to come full circle toeards him lol. Coach Greg isn't stealing people recipes like Remington James, not claiming natural like Mike O'Hearn, and overall promotes a healhier lifestyle as he has always been an advocate for heart health and cardio. I do believe that Coach Greg should at least evaluate his own personal reservations about being fat if you don't have abs...or just reaffirm that it is his personal ideals for men's physique. Bodybuilding is like martial arts in that the core foundation is about self improvement....somewhere along the lines it became somethin else that's literally shortening athlete's lifespan by a big margin. Just look at 2021...we lost a lot of prominent bodybuilders and influencers way too soon and the common theme I keep seeing is "pre-existing conditions" and there isn't much discussion on the matter. Think about it...the bigger your mass is...the harder your heart had to work. I agree... after reading some of the comments here I realise people here have some huge misconceptions on what maingaining means (or maybe I'm the one who got it wrong). I've always understood maingaining as maintaining as low a % of body fat that is comfortable for you where you can still build muscle, and that differs from person to person. Greg has never explicitly said that one needs to maingain at say 8% body fat which is almost impossible for anyone to do. Some commenters here have mentioned how they fell for Greg's BS by trying to be "as lean as possible", "not making gains while getting leaner"... all of which make no sense because unless you are a genetic freak or have never worked out before of course you are not going to make gains while being as lean as possible. You are supposed to be at a level of body fat that is as lean as possible for you to still be able to make gains (i.e. if you can make gains at 15% body fat then stay at that body fat %), not be as lean as possible then try to make gains (e.g. getting to 8% body fat then try to make gains while maintaining that body fat).
If I can maintain 15% body fat (able to see top 2 and half my middle 2 abs) and still be able to build muscle, I would. Why would I want to bulk to 20-25% body fat and then have to cut down to 10-15%? Perhaps I may make gains slower but I'm generally happier about looking decent at 15% year round. That's the concept of maingaining I got from watching Greg's videos back then (haven't watched in over a year) and I'm doing fine, just my 2 cents...

    • @monsterbulgaria
      @monsterbulgaria 2 года назад

@@GC-by6iz You didn't get it wrong, that is what maingaining is. You are technically getting "slower" results, but if you actually measure the muscle gained and then lost from bulking and cutting, it comes out as the same number, so its neither slower nor faster. The problem with this channel and revival fitness is that they more so seem to have a personal agenda against greg, so they grab onto anything he says that can be remotely wrong or "hurtful" (as saying you are fat if you don't have abs, which technically speaking is true, even tho it might hurt someone). The majority of greg disproving himself montage was litterally words taken out of context and put against each other, like wtf? He says that you are fat if you don't have abs, ok this is true, he says that if you are too low of a body fat FOR YOU, you need to stop starving yourself (i.e. eat more, which is NOT bulking, it is MAINTAINING at a higher percentage of body fat), he also says that if you are already "fat" you don't need to bulk even more, you can just maintain, which is ALSO true, but instead of looking at the different points, they combine them and make it look like he is saying "if you are fat you should loose the fat (skipping out the fact he said, if you are TOO fat as in morbidly obese for example), but you should also gain the fat (skipping out the fact that he said "if you are too lean for your own comfort and health") and you should also maintaining and not gain or loose anything (skipping out the fact that he said "if you are already at a good for you body fat%")" which is freaking annoying the level of misleading they are using. He very clearly explains what he means every time he talks about those things, yet they take it out of context and just put the words against each other.

Over 35 years ago, I lifted and went from 140 lbs to 190 lbs (6' height)with a lot of strength added. Never looked big or cut. Never had abs. At one point, I gave it a good try to get cut but lost too much strength so I gave up. Was probably 18% fat at lowest. Now, in my mid 50s, I am interested in lifting again to build muscle. With the internet, I thought it be a chance to get more info than last time. Started watching athlene x and gravity transformation and then Greg. Now I watch very low view videos from older guys that are not and were never pros to see their work outs. Most have good info and are selling nothing and have no angle. I'm not really into drama and internet back and forth.
When I look back at my lifting and diet in the early to mid 1980s, I did it all right then and none of the big influencers today on social media are any smarter then I was then. Thank you Joe Weider. In my 20s, I came close to my strength goals and neared plateau after 5 years of training and maintained a 32" waist. Now, I would like to go back to 75% of that strength and return to the 32" waist. I get Greg's position in most of his videos because most of the population is very fat. In fact, those not into fitness are mostly obese, especially women. Most normal noobs have no business 'bulking'. Because I am at my desired weight, I will be happy with a very slow recomp that reduces fat and gains muscle. Was this Greg's 'maingaining' definition number 2?

I’ve been in the gym consistently for 28 years & NEVER once bulked, all while building significant lean muscle mass & strength over time while staying at about the same lower BF % throughout that time. My results were slow-ish & steady over the years, but also were comparable to those I knew who cycled thru the traditional bulking & cutting phases, as the results were always about the same in the end whenever they leaned out. That’s not even taking into account the fact that gaining & losing weight repeatedly can be harder on the heart & organs in general than taking the more balanced approach of building up with a slow & steady process without a doing a bulk.
I always referred to “maingaining” as lean bulking, but there’s many different terms I’ve heard to describe it over the years. There’s also a thing called a “recomposition” where you slowly shed bodyfat while also slowly building (or at very least maintaining) lean muscle mass, though there’s a fine line to follow to successfully accomplish that. I’ve seen this work personally, & also with many of the hundreds of clients I’ve worked with over the years. I think many people are getting lost in the semantics here.
PS: As a friend, I think it might be a mistake to become an affiliate of Greg’s at this early point in your RUclips career, as it can cause people to question the integrity of info in your content or if your perspective is influenced in any way by a supplement you’re promoting. I mean that in the most constructive way possible, as I know you operate with the highest integrity and won’t compromise that to push a product for someone else…..but not everyone else will take the time to know or understand that about you. Greg isn’t someone I usually agree with but I don’t really see what everyone is complaining about here. He has said many times that everyone has a genetic limit to how low they can go and even says most people can’t be as lean as he is considering he can barely maintain 8-9% while on TRT. If your limit is 12% and you’re currently 15% there’s no scientific reason for why you need a surplus. If you’re 12% and want to stay 12% there’s no reason you’d need a “large” surplus. Which he has also said many times, to do a small surplus not no surplus at all necessarily. Again assuming that’s what you could maintain. If you feel shitty below 15% same rules. You could literally eat enough to go up to 16% and then maintain at 16% until the muscle you’ve gained drops you back down

    • @greuju

Not everyone can maintain that bodyfat. I've never been able to see my abs even when I was in mma in good shape.
Greg's point is get as lean as you can get to and still build muscle and feel good.

If you want to make it big in RUclips you have to offer something no one else is, and the main-gaining principle is what he brings to the table. Admitting that reasonable bulks and cuts are the way to do things isn’t good for the algorithm because people have been preaching that for a long time. If we do assume 17% is the 95th percentile for leanness in the US then by definition Greg’s message actually is fine for the masses as a whole, but it will leave some skinny or super lean guys down the wrong path. I do think staying lean (not shredded) and gaining muscle is doable, but you do gotta be more on point with the other stuff, and being in a surplus as long as you can manage is the optimal way to be.

Also if you’re trying to gain weight in a bulk you might have to force feed a little, especially if you used to be skinny. Greg sees force feeding as absolutely terrible but it’s not a black and white scenario. If you eat till you’re satiated (especially if your normally don’t have a large appetite) it’s going to be a lot harder to gain weight.
I did a little experiment where I didn’t track my weight for a month and a half and I didn’t gain any weight. Force feed if you don’t eat a lot.

It became apparent, before I caught your channel, and Revival Fitness's, that I'm primarily Greg's target audience. Someone around his age, might be a good candidate for TRT, and who is overweight, and he spouts a bunch of stuff that appeals to the older gentleman who wishes to transform. Train harder than last time. If you can't see your abs, you're fat. You want food that tastes good and fills you up (but as a diabetic, I can't eat most of his recipes). So, ultimately, this lie he sells becomes readily apparent, if you listen long enough. The sad thing is he drags a lot of young men down with him.
I'm 50, not wanting to have 15% body fat. I want more muscle mass, to help manage blood sugar. Greg says train harder than last time, but you and Revival Fitness have show me more about how to do that than "coach" Greg. Quotes, because he's a coach in his own mind, despite whatever he might be able to charge people.

Yes you're making a great point and it's a point that they make to. He has been a high performer forever, so if you're a man and you learn how to keep pace you can be a high performer too.
But that doesn't work if you have severe metabolic syndromes. You can feel like passing out just from moving to quick, how can you exercise like that?
And most artificial sweeteners can be handled by healthy people fine, if your digestion is already bad then you're just confounding issues.
If I was you I'd see if a doctor will prescribe anything that helps a bit with appetite suppression and just work on being able to fast up to 72 hours.
If you can do that you should be able to reverse diabetes to the point where your body and energy levels work how they should.
There's quite a few doctors that teach how to fast, ketosis, or fasting mimicking.
Just switching to more keto friendly veggies and fermented stuff should make a huge difference.
