I love that you said if you're doing nothing on a Wednesday night then watch it because that is exactly when I watched it. I liked it but I agree with somethings you said about not knowing if it is pro or anti military
Did anybody else find Cassie to be really unlikeable? She was just so… no. She was pushy, rude, and was just built off the stereotype of modern feminists, she was pretty much the whole reason I didnt like the movie, everything else was fine, except for the fact that they killed of Frankie I was bawling
This is a great review. I really like your style and the things you noticed. I think it's interesting that you couldn't figure out the messaging in that it begs the question on whether or not good movies can be made without having explicit messaging and what that might look like. One movie that comes to mind that kind of gives off that "centrist" vibe is requiem for a dream. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already!
Its clear: this movie is about healing the cultural divide in our nation right now. Left and right coming together as Americans. this movie aims to prevent a civil war. I love it.
agree... two people from different perspectives come together for mutual benefit and realize there are things they actually need/appreciate from the other.... It's a kinda depressing commentary on our society that this pretty simplistic movie is the best vehicle available to promote this kind of theme but credit to the movie for doing it.
That may be the goal but they didn't succeed in that. They didn't work out anything real. Yes they fell in love despite their differences, but would it last? They still have very different views on many things such as racism, sexism, xenophobia, etc. Those issues don't disappear in a relationship without someone's view shifting. He did nothing but crap on her views in the beginning... there is nothing to say his opinion has changed. She did learn to appreciate the marines' pain, fear, & experiences. He didn't learn to appreciate her's beyond fearing her diabetes.
Thank you for the review. I liked it and I get that its hard to figure out what the meaning of the movie is as there are so many different things going on that one gets confused from diabetes to Iraq, his past addiction, liberalism vs conservatism etc etc However, isn’t this how it is in reality that we are confronted with all kinds of issues all the time. On the one hand our past on the other our health financial problems loss of a family member etc. For me the main point of the movie is that these are two strong but vulnerable people who crave to love but are scared of it. She grew up without a dad is hurt and scared of opening up to love and sees the world just from one angle. She eventually learns that the world is more complicated and changes to be a softer person and learns to love. He also changes. Although he says marriage is for love and uses his parents as an example, he is damaged from his mom”s death and scared of love although he craves it. He grows up at the end taking responsibility and is able to tell both his family and Cassi that he loves them. Its about these characters who change evolve and learn to not be afraid of love. I don’t think its trying to show who is right or wrong regarding the messaging on the war and the political situation. Its just showing how things are not taking sides and that we are all different and this is also like in real life that we all think differently but still live in the same world and we sometimes learn from each other or not. I think though the part on the health system is trying to show that there is a flaw in the system. Just one more comment on the dad wanting to bust his own son: I think at this point the dad is fed up with him and doesn’t know how to handle him and he looks like a good guy who is sad and frustrated with Luke. He had to deal with his wife’s death and on the other hand handle what Luke was going through. Even his brother said to Luke that he was out of control at one point so the dad thinks this is the way to deal with him. He should have sent Luke to psychotherapy instead of punishing him.
Nowhere near the original movie set in Vietnam in the 80s with R. Lee Ermy. "Marines don't die on army choppers. Don't give those doggy pricks the satisfaction!!" Best line in the movie. 🤣
Another vet here. I enjoyed the movie but had some of the same issues you had pointed out. Also I agree with as some have said the military doesn't give two craps why you get married as long as it's not obvious and you gloat about it.
i dont get the hate with the movie, i think the reason why is because how you said, theres anti military and pro military so someone in those camps is bound to get mad
For more casual movie goers, I would agree with the assessment that if you turn it off, then it's really not a good movie. But as I have a policy never to rate or review films I haven't watched from start to finish, it doesn't really apply. I have watched some painfully bland and terrible movies up to the ending, so I could relistically write a review of how bad they are. At least that's how it works for me personally. Sure, occasionally I have had some movies dropped in half, but then I wouldn't be reviewing them.
@@TheScuttlebuttShow I haven't seen it yet. I heard that it's a popular and somewhat controversial film, so I decided to watch a review or two before deciding to watch it. Your review is pretty good, so I may watch it indeed. Thanks for responding.
So I watched it all the way and I really liked it, BUT I have a couple of issues, 1 the actual marine core couldn’t give to shits if you married someone for benefits people do it ALL the dang time as long as you don’t like come out and say yea I only married this person for extra money they are not gonna dive that deep into it in real life. Another issue I have is that this “hearing” the whole drug dealer snitching on them is so dumb like he could have easily told the core about that was happening and he would have been done as a unreliable source and the case would have been dismissed, this whole thing was stupid, also they rushed the movie ALOT I felt like there was a lot of things that they could have done to make this movie better, it was good but to get to be a great movie there could have been the more military like the actual scene of Luke and Frankie getting injured and killed, more with Luke and Cassie’s dynamics I just feel like there was some missing things
Yeah the military don't care if u get married for Benifits everyone does it. I know so many people personally who have done it and have told their commanders no one cares U can't go to jail for it
I feel like there is a difference between a good movie and an entertaining one. I really didn’t like the movie as a whole, but it was entertaining. Kind of like twilight; it isn’t the best at executing the book’s content either, but it’s entertaining.
Only thing I could focus on was the uniforms… They. Looked. Like. Trash. Their covers were on way too low, and looked like ball caps. As well as their sleeves. Just make the uniforms look rights. There’s plenty of homeless/ jobless vets they could’ve hired to make the uniforms look half decent.
Sounds more like a chic flick , think I will skip this one. Maybe just listen to the songs. Its great to see you back on, I know it will take some time to get your room set up, how is your wife doing at work? And how is the dog-o settling in? Can't wait for the Max on his one wheel video SD style. ⚓💪🇺🇸💪🇺🇦🖖🍻💑😁
dude, the Iraqi war and the 2020 culture clash drove me crazy. it's the biggest faux Pas the movie does. I was going crazy whether it was now or in 2005
I sit through bad movies all the time, just to see how low they can go, doesn't mean I liked it or I think it's good. I liked your review and your point about not knowing the message of the movie (US good because military but terrible because you have to marry a soldier to be able to afford healthcare and not die, wtf). Spoiler review: I personally disliked that movie from the start, I hated the fact that he was misogynistic and she was a feminist and she still fell for him (the doorknob interaction was terrible to witness). I like your point about the wedding nigh. I get the movie overall but the part I don’t get is the morning after the wedding night. I don’t understand why he was acting like that in the morning ? could it be because he was about to go to Iraq or my previous comment about him having problems with closeness due to the trauma with his mom. That’s why he plays hot and cold throughout the movie until he heals at the end. I do agree that it shouldn’t have happened that early and I think he planned it but maybe I am wrong. The part about him being against her trying to save her life by marrying his friend and trying to talk his friend out of it. I think subconsciously he was jealous because note that he did like her at first site and was attracted to her and all that fighting was just built up passion between them and damage from their pasts. I know alot of couples who have different beliefs and have kids and grandkids together. Anyway, I think he was subconsciously jealous and didn’t want them to marry supposedly using the law as an excuse but he did it himself. Why else was he freaking out like that or it could be both. Regarding money issues later. He could work in his fathers garage.
Obviously it was a romantic movie and it was based on a book. Typically when it is based on a book, theres really very little time to squeeze in all the story lines. But nonetheless, to answer your one main question - no this isn't about the military, nor is it about healthcare, nor is it about the protagonist being a singer of sorts. This is ones and for all a romantic movie and thats about it, everything that happened in between is all happenstance. it just so happened that Cassie is a great artist and created a score for the movie (which is rarely good). But yeah, I think I like it because compared to real life - life isn't really that straightforward when compared to movies. And though this movie is atypical of rom coms, I think it delivers on the entertainment aspect for sure. It did not drag on, it didn't bore me. It kept going at a good pace for me to appreciate it.

True. Also the indoctrinated drones screaming “those men don’t think people deserve rights”.. which is NOT true. Stupid.
The way people talk and act in this movie is not how real people act. Who goes around calling people snowflakes like huh?
