    this entire interview just reminded me of being stuck in a conversation with someone from work or an old classmate and you have absolutely nothing to talk about except that one thing you have in common.
    a summary of this interview would be stephen going 'so, are you irish? how are you irish? how's it like being irish? are you still irish? i'm irish. irish.'

    • @mineMissHellsing
      @mineMissHellsing 7 лет назад +188

      Sadly yeah. They're both introverts, Cillian a hardcore one, and I imagine the conversation to be like this if they can't find anything in common. Speaking of which, that whole Irish thing is also something that's weird for Europeans and we don't really know how to react to. If you say you're Irish, it is expected that you were at least born and raised, at least for some time, in Ireland. Americans are really quick to say something like "Oh yeah I'm Italian" because your great grandparents were originally from Italy, even though you have never been in Italy and maybe don't speak but few words of the Italian language. So when Stephen goes "Oh yeah I'm Irish", Europeans, and especially Irish like Murphy go "... No. No you're not. You're American." Makes it even more awkward when that one thing that you have in common, well, you don't have in common.

    • @mineMissHellsing
      @mineMissHellsing 7 лет назад +21

      TL;DR/summary: African Americans are not Africans that's true, but the term, even if incorrect, doesn't make similar misunderstands like "I'm Irish", and it's okay to be proud of your heritage, but it comes across a bit like pretending to be something you're not when you bluntly say "I'm Irish!", especially if you talk to someone who is really Irish, which can be just really awkward if you don't want to offend the other by showing how non-Irish they really are, but that's just kinda inevitable, and so the conversation can be awkward and uncomfortable. It's more of a culture thing how Europeans and Americans define themselves rather than a competition who is the most Irish, but it does cause misunderstandings... and awkwardness.
      Essay time... just skip it if you value your free time lol.
      Well "African American" means just black. I mean... it can't really mean anything else. You can't really say "I'm European American", it doesn't say anything. But it's true that American blacks are not any more African than Colbert is Irish, so if you think about it, yes a rather incorrect term. But as it is a term that really says nothing, there's not the same kind of misunderstanding, as in if you say "I'm Scottish" or "I'm Irish", because Europeans would like to go "Oh I visited in Scotland, where do you live there?" or something similar. It's just saying that you are something that you are not. It's just strange. You can say you descend from something, like your family's roots are in Ireland or in Italy, which gives the idea why you love and are interested in Italy, but that does not make you Italian, unless you go and live there for however long I guess. Which is something I forgot to add, that obviously you can say you're Swedish or British if you've lived there for a however long time and adapt to the culture even if you weren't born there, but back to Colbert, if he says "I'm Irish", it means, in the generalized European ear, that 1. you were born and raised (for some time) in Ireland or 2. you moved to Ireland and have lived there for quite some time. It's not a competition, sure, but it's something that can piss people off a bit, as it comes a very wanna-be like when you are neither. I mean... I wouldn't say I'm Mongolian even if I have a bit of Mongolian blood in me, as I know nothing of the culture and I'm born and raised in Finland, as are my parents and grandparents, and if I were to say "Oh cool I'm Mongolian too!" to a Mongolian... I'd just feel that to be very disrespectful. I don't mean that as in "You're not really Irish get out here" thing, but as a... well, a cultural difference between Europeans and Americans when it comes to talking about your heritage, and it can cause misunderstandings and just... strange, uneasy feeling when you have so different ideas what it means to be "Irish". Which, coming back to this interview, can make talking about it more awkward if Cillian doesn't really want to offend Colbert by sort of "exposing him" as not really Irish and accidentally humiliating him by showing how he doesn't know anything about Ireland and make him feel bad, so that "We're Irish, let's talk about it!" can be... super awkward.
      Oh my god that wall of text though. I am so so sorry. I'll put TL;DR.

His corporal couldn't swim so he swam out with him to keep his head above the water till they made it to a boat. My grandfather passed away before the movie. I tried to watch it, and ran out of the theater in tears. One day I hope I can watch it. He's always been my hero, but knowing the fear he must have felt just shattered me. Well it's completely different situations and senarions. Will Smith is 10 years older than Tom Hardy and Leonardo Dicaprio became famous in his late teens early 20s. Tom Hardy only "made" it after 33 (after Inception basically). Now Cillian Murphy is again a different senario. You can have Rippner, I get Crane? 😀 My crush is 90% about Crane (yes just the fictional character... don't judge me) anyway, I only started paying attention to Cillian's career because I felt he did such justice to the character, even if I felt he was a bit too young for the role (he'd be utterly perfect now 😍). And I love Red Eye and 28 Days Later, and Sunshine too, such good movies! Fuck it, I like In Time too, even if he didn't have that much to do in it. I hate that I still haven't seen Breakfast on Pluto, I know it's amazing 😭 also Broken is super overlooked, the movie was heartbreaking and he was such a darling in it, made it kinda hard to watch 😞 Hopefully getting to see Dunkirk today or tomorrow, Nolan-Murphy combo is always perfection 😄😄😄

Everybody should see it, it's a real fucking experience that's really bad for your blood pressure. Plus Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy

    My Grandad was there on the beach at Dunkirk being shelled for 3 days keeping communications open, before joining the last of the boats. The men that experienced it were all changed by what happened. They came home to a Country under siege with constant bombing raids in preparation for the Nazi invasion. Held back by a few brave fighter pilots and our secret radar system the Battle of Britain carried on for another year before (Pearl Harbour and) the USA finally joined the war. Grandad was back again, following D Day, and fought his way across Europe to Berlin and then one day it was just over and he went home... an ordinary bloke in a workshop.

    I’ve been waiting for this movie for decades. Read about it as a kid in school and thought it the most incredible, heroic story of the English and it’s people. I just couldn’t understand why the event was never commemorated cinematically. From what I’ve been reading online - it’s going to be well worth the wait.

    Very interesting interview; not all actors are comedians, or pretend to be ones; pity that interviewer didn't pick up on the actor's previous movies more; his The wind that shakes the Barley from 2006 was pretty amazing. And his 'unsuccessful career as a musician' he mentioned, that's quite interesting.

      It is possible, if unlikely, that Stephen only knows of him from Peaky Blinders where his Birmingham accent is impeccable. 28 Days Later, and especially The Shaky Wind movie did sod all box office in the USA, so my guess is Stephen saw neither. In 28 Days Later the accent is there, but it is a South Dublin 'posh' Irish accent, one that is rarely heard in cinema, and would strike most Irish-Americans ears/minds as 'English'.

    • @TheInselaffen
      @TheInselaffen 3 года назад

      @@Norvik_-ug3ge I've heard faint hints that you can insult a Dubliner by calling their accent English, by other Irish. Maybe like the Welsh farmers painting 'Go Home English' on the house of a couple from Cardiff.

    The beautiful thing about actors like Cillian Murphy?
    You can tell he's artistic.
    He likes the money.
    But he'll never be the guy to turn down an art film.
    Being famous is something that happened to him, never something he went looking for.
    You do something well and you love it, and you'll never have to ask anyone to pay attention to you ❤️

Your voice and recitation of that beautiful poem added so much to it as did the music and the photo. Thank you for doing that. It provides true moments of joy. Again, thank you so much for taking the time to do it…

    Coolest guy and actor of our time. I have been saying this since 28 Days later, Sunshine...but now, with Peaky Blinders, everyone eventually noticed that. Sexiest, coolest, most talented actor of my generation (born early eighties, even though he is a bit older). 28 Days later is still one of my favorite movies ever, I mean, that ending scene... I really hope he is going to work with Linklater, Jarmusch and Tarantino one day. I would love that.

      Wow you`ve mentioned R. Linklater! Great respect for that. But Tarantino is a trash. I wish Cillian to avoid him as well as marvel movies. IMHO

    The reason Dunkirk is not 'famous' in America is variform. But the main reason is because it doesn't involve Americans. The most insular people on Earth tend not to invest in stories in which they do not star.
    The reason Dunkirk is not feted is because it not a massive victory. In storytelling terms, it is a tale of a rearguard action, of rescue and retreat. Phenomenal, but no neat bows. No medals at the end. It is the first major act of camaraderie and bravery at the beginning of an internecine war.
