My last job seemed like a great opportunity when I started, but within a few months I knew it wasn't the right position for me. I was hired right out of grad school into a level 2 role, and they basically offered no training, and the job tasks had basically nothing to do with the job title. What they were asking me to do was so far outside of my comfort zone, and the environment was toxic to anyone who asked for help. After less than a year, they put me on a PIP. 2 weeks later I gave them my notice, and they were shocked. I told them I felt it was clearly best for all parties, and my boss' boss told me they had "invested so much time in me" which just made it even more clear I had to gtfo.
Found my garden - working for myself! P.S. I absolutely despise PIPs. My experience is that a manager lets things slide until this is really their only option. As you said, lots of (most?) managers are really bad at managing their team's performance issues. Maybe they should be the ones getting the PIP?
I worked for companies that had pip regularly for every employee and it was the best experience in my career to have such clear expectations from my management of what should I do to get a raise or a promotion. Those plans also included what skills should I learn to climb this career ladder
Being in the work force since the mid 80's, I've seen quite a few of these scenarios play out (on myself as well as others), and you're spot on. One scenario I would like to add is when your work load is INCREASED suddenly, significantly and without a clear reason. This can be an indicator that you're being set up for failure. This applies to teams as well. When you have a team where the majority have a problem getting, for example, 80 outbound calls accomplished per day and the company raises the quota to 100, something may be going on. A glaring red flag is when questions about the same (even when posed in gentle and non-confrontational ways) are met w/ irritated and dismissive reactions from the higher ups, as if they are trying to make you feel 'lazy' for even ASKING them about it.
Oh my goodness #3 is so relevant. I feel like so many terminations could be avoided if employees felt like they could communicate more freely to their higher ups and lines of communication were better with their managers. Sadly however this often doesn’t happen. Not only do many managers try to avoid these talks, but they often put these talks on the back burner in favor of trying to gain more revenue for the business.
This is so good. I have seen or experienced all of these in my work life. I knew a manager who took over a department and proceeded to fire everyone she had not personally hired. Which meant all seven employees. Two were able to transfer to other departments. The others quit or were fired. Then the manager was eventually promoted and then fired.
Like in the movies: someone was promoted to "new" manager and become the "villain" and then someone become the hero of the company firing him. Cool work, done clean: how many people cut off? Who is the winner?
@@patriciazaragoza3269 right? Why would companies sabotage themselves so bad. Loose loose all the way! Idiots. I mean, you didn't hire an idiot, so if he/she fails in something, offer training, help, support, few things they ask for. Hell no, the greed and egos stand in the way.
A PIP is one of 3 things: 1. You are actually "underperforming" and need a plan of action. (Least common) 2. Your boss does not have the drive and/or ability to train you to be better and uses the PIP as a crutch to cover his/her incompetence. 3. Your boss wants you out and is using the PIP as a sign for you to apply somewhere else.
Hey Madeline! Really appreciate all the content and encouragement! I have been having interviews for almost 9 months now with no success (I went to the final rounds of some of them and were rejected) and it can be very demoralising. thanks for the encouragement! I WILL FIND MY GARDEN
Going through a change in leadership at work now for several months and your video was sooooo needed! After going through your list, I’m now confident that I’m not being fired, but it seems as if it’s still time for me to find a new garden. Thank you and you’ve got a new subscriber in me!
After several months of accolades of praise, job confirmation, etc., without any of these signs, I was suddenly let go...no previous disciplinary meetings, no write-ups, no warnings....my Asst Director entered into my office one morning and attempted a pip and Idk if she understood what a pip was bc she did not receive any kind of formal training nor education in HR.... she said she had no reason to fire me yet she was-and did.....our states need to change the "at will" laws which can give both an employer and an employee a chance to create alternative plans bc this can make a big blow on a company suddenly without a staff member or an employee with no money and chance to figure out his or her next career move.... Please, everyone, let's lobby for this law to be apoealed and overturned.
End "at will" employment? Be careful what you wish for; many countries that have abolished "at will" employment (e.g., France, Italy, ect.) often have unemployment rates exceeding ten and sometimes twenty percent.
Thank you Madeleine for this video and your words of encouragement!! I have a phone interview next week for a company I applied for three months but was rejected. As always to prepare for my interview, I am binge-watching your videos, crafting answers to popular interview questions, and remembering to truly bring my authentic self to whomever I will be speaking to. (I WILL find my garden!!)
Been following your channel for more than 3 years and those have been really helpful and Informative, I've been layed off recently I've been covering up for a former colleague that resigned at a certain point of time that the management decided not to replace for "fund restrictions related reasons" which was complete bs and it was insanely stressful to work in a very understaffed project that's emergency related and the end of my contract they informed me that they're no longer willing to renew my contract even though they're promises were different whenever there was a long period of time before the contracted period end, and now they're filling the spot I was handling with 3 new employees 😂😂
The problem I have with terminations is that most leaders (if you can even call them that) lack the spine to tell the reason why they will fire a person straight to their face. Before my current job I was laid off two places without any reason being said even though I kindly and professionally asked about it. Many other people aswell same thing. Is there a legal problem with that or is it just management lacking balls
#5 definitely applies in retail. Management switched at a store my friend worked at. She was there 10 years, then wacked down to just working 2 days per week. Sad.

Many thanks for this advice. This almost happened when I got a new manager. The new manager brought his own guy and his plan was to fire all the old hands in the dept which i was the team leader. He gave his guy a position next to me so he could understudy me before he fires me. But I was proactive enough to drop my resignation letter a few months after onboarding he onboarded his guy.

Hello Maddie. I just want to let you that know I got the job. Your tips and lectures helped me so much. English is not my first language that's why it is hard for me to compose sentences in my head and talkin at the same time, but I did it anyway! Thank God and thank you!❤😊

Thank you for the video. I have 25 years of work experience working in New Zealand & Australia. What I have realised throughout my career is that when the boss doesn't like your personality for some reason or if you're black or brown & if your boss is a white racist person who doesn't like brown/ black people, they just start making plans to get rid of you. Most of the time, it's nothing to do with your performance at all. I have experienced this because I'm a brown person in a predominantly white country.
Why I feel so...vigilated? You just almost literally described my actual situtation. 🤔 so this is common? Damn, I'm sorry for the people that's going trough what I am right now 😬
I can attest to the terminated to paraded pipeline. I got fired from a corporate trainer job I really hated in 2022 and after some soul searching, I moved cities, got hired at a major nonprofit as a grant writer and within 6 months I got promoted to the regional grants analyst. I love my job and I would've never thought I would be where I am if I was still at that other role
Losing responsibilities, position, pay or the quiet firing, is also known as constructive dismissal. Lawyers are specializing in wrongful dismissal suits stemming from constructive dismissal as a bulk of companies really screw this up. I am aware there are jurisdictions that can fire at will. It depends on the employment laws in place.
I'm looking everywhere but cannot find an answer to this issue; my boss is asking my to take on a task the 1)I don't really feel qualified to do and 2) they simply do not pay me enough to do this. I don't know how to respond. If I take on the task I will probably do a sub-par job and I will feel completely taken advantage of in the process. HELP!
A Pip pretty much is just the company covering their ass when they eventually terminate your employment, you sign a document stating that you have underperformed.
hi Madeline, i received a job offer, thanks to you!!! and as much as i appreciate the offer, i am also giving other interviews and i am hopeful that i will get another offer from a bigger company. i want to ask you what should i do if i have signed the contract with the first company and i get another offer which is more appealing to me. can i talk to the first comapny and cancel the contract if i have not started to work there as yet? please help me!!1
Hey get your resume up-to-date. Corporations don't owe you anything, so you are your own employer. Do you do more than expected in your job, are you mentoring others, and asking for feedback? Are you thanking others for helping you finish a task, a report, a collaboration, etc. Always thank others for helping you. It builds trust and they will go out of their way to help you later. Document your work, ask for feedback from your Supervisor and ASK for work. What I did as a Supervisor, (now retired) was preach to my team was the four Cs: Communication, Collaboration, Cooperation, and Coordination. No one can take shots at you if you do these four things and of course, document your work.
I do have a question though... If the employment is at-will... do managers need to provide feedbacks before firing someone? Companies can fire people for no reason at all right?
Wish I knew these signs sooner. Quite a few of these happened to me in 2019. Would’ve been better prepared for my future had I seen it coming. Oh well.
I got caught giving myself pleasure while on lunch break. I feel the shame is punishment enough, but my employer wrote me up and now they want me to attend special re-training sessions on the weekend. The only positive is that I'm getting paid to take the additional training.
Im facing termination from my meat processing company because I've reported my osteoarthritis condition to them an ive been always honest with them an give doctor certificates when time off but this time I was ment to return to work after my chiropractor work they sent me home then i saw my doctor an he ask for me to be put on a easy job so her said go home an afterva week after beg my doctor to let my back to normal duty's hr wanted a meet about my pip have not return to work yet after 18 days

@Chris, I have gone through exactly the same. I quit the job before they fired me. The management was shocked to see my resignation 😅
7. If you keep getting written up over the pettiest of things
8. If they would rather see you get fired than get any recognition

I don't know how to respond. If I take on the task I will probably do a sub-par job and I will feel completely taken advantage of in the process. HELP!
Your boss is lazy!,
A Pip pretty much is just the company covering their ass when they eventually terminate your employment, you sign a document stating that you have underperformed.
thank you very helpful
hi Madeline, i received a job offer, thanks to you!!! and as much as i appreciate the offer, i am also giving other interviews and i am hopeful that i will get another offer from a bigger company. i want to ask you what should i do if i have signed the contract with the first company and i get another offer which is more appealing to me.
can i talk to the first comapny and cancel the contract if i have not started to work there as yet? please help me!!1
I will find my garden😊
Yes 🧡
I'll find my garden. 🌱
I'll find my garden....🎉
I really, really hope I find my garden

Loooove to hear it!
I will find my garden!!😊
I do have a question though... If the employment is at-will... do managers need to provide feedbacks before firing someone? Companies can fire people for no reason at all right?
Wish I knew these signs sooner. Quite a few of these happened to me in 2019. Would’ve been better prepared for my future had I seen it coming. Oh well.

I got caught giving myself pleasure while on lunch break. I feel the shame is punishment enough, but my employer wrote me up and now they want me to attend special re-training sessions on the weekend. The only positive is that I'm getting paid to take the additional training.
