It is so good to hear all your tips, Denise. You mentioned things about the gel stains that I never knew. As a matter of fact, I only learned about gel stain about a year ago, so this is super exciting to contemplate using. Many thanks!!

Right? No link on how to know what kind of stain was originally used. Need that info for sure.

If you are layering over another stain color, is it better to use a solid stain versus a semi-transparent stain?

Using gel stains that are water based does the same principle apply? Oil over oil, water based over water. Application will be over existing stain.

I am staying away from all minwax..I tried the fast dry and it dried too fast. Samded old damaged table and tried gel, might as well neen paint. It dried so fast you had maybe a minute. I scraped ot all off because you could not rub off excess. Now I jave 2 tables tops that look basically look like black. The one with gel I had to do something so simce drying fast I ised a nrush and made lines in the stain then wemt over with a roller..Made a cool smooth surface with a hint of lines. I dont know of the lines are enough but may knock the dark with a bit of glaze. I cam say the stain over stain worked well on those rattan rockers woth the swirl sides. All edges were scuffed..Think the xlosest color match was Chestnut 234, 233, the darker one may English. It covered really well, hid the scuffs and looks like a new chair. Fron a short distance you can't make out the stained imperfections on the edges. I dont jave a shop and no indoors to work in so this TX heat is not friendly to anything with poly. Gel, I jave to use like a glaze. Wipe on wipe off
