  • Short list of the good and bad features of the radio. I highly recommend for beginners. Just my opinion.

70 with mars/cap mod was my first decent ht as a new ham, just got the ft-5 on sale. They rock

Anyway I like my 70 as it has good selectivity, good sensitivity and even the satellite operation is possible with proper setup of radio. Nice feature is C4FM. Using the VW mode in AMBE+2 with voice code of 4.4 kbps, error correction code of 2.8 kbps gives great voice quality. I still have my trusty FT-60R but I like 70 too a lot.

I bought one of these radios 2 weeks ago at the Dayton Hamvention. The radio itself is a stellar performer when it comes to receiving and transmitting. It does an amazing job of ignoring QRM and it doesn't allow the interference signals to break the squelch. The downside of the radio is the absolutely horrid battery life. I've done a time test, and the battery only lasts around 6 and a half to 7 hours, receiving ONLY - no transmitting. The battery takes a long time to charge up using the wall wart charger that comes with it. A $25 Baofeng radio comes with a desk top drop-in charger, and it lasts 18 hours on the same receive-only test. I wish that Yaesu offered some sort of money back satisfaction guarantee. The radio performs great, but it is tough to use the radio when the battery is dead...

My battery life improved once I updated the firmware to ver 1.11. Also, Batteries America sells a 2200mah battery for the FT-70. K4QEP

You can check your firmware version by long press of the F...then go to menu #59 and press F. This will display the ver # in use.

@@livebyreason I checked, and I've got version 1.11 already. I keep reading that the solution to the issue is to get a 2nd battery and a rapid charger. I checked with Batteries America, and it would cost me about $123 US dollars for a charger and a battery to be shipped to Canada. I only paid $149 for the radio to begin with :( I was out at field day this past weekend. Sadly I was carrying around my Baofeng radio most of the time because the Yaesu FT-70D wouldn't last long enough for me. I had one of the other hams ask me about my FT-70D, because he is looking for a new handheld. I told him that I would NOT buy another one due to the poor battery performance, and other quirks (difficult programming via enclosed USB, 2-handed volume control). I am on the hunt for another handheld. I'm not going to spend another $125 US Dollars (which is over $160 Canadian dollars) for a battery and charger for this unit.

@@davidl.4408 I had a battery go bad btw. If you have a battery on the way out this might be why. n2rac.com/what-you-should-know-about-the-dangers-from-lithium-ion-batteries-1a4de16a09e0
I had and disliked a FT4XR before buying my 70 second hand.
I've never met anyone that had a FT-65R that didn't really like it.

@@livebyreason I am hoping that the battery wouldn't be on it's way out considering that I just bought it 6 weeks ago, brand new.. I read through the info on the link you sent - thank you very much... I am going to avoid the rapid charger, and I'll likely end up just buying another battery, and will make sure that both batteries are fully charged before doing any outdoor adventures.

Great radio but battery life sucks, programming sequence is complicated and no drop in charger included as with lower priced Yaesu HT's.
