  • “We Are Here” is an educational video focusing on transgender healthcare produced by Mandala Center for Change and Whaleheart Productions. Commissioned by Jefferson Healthcare, this video was a direct outcome of the Mandala Center's Transgender Youth Legislative Theatre project and is being integrated as required training for local medical providers and support staff.
The training video itself is 12 minutes long followed by credits and 3 minutes of Cast Interviews.

Thanks! This was really helpful. I hope you can distribute it broadly. I really appreciate Jefferson Healthcare taking on this project and hope everyone who watches stays tuned for the cast interviews at the end.

Thank you for making this! I hope this video gets shared widely & helps to educate those in the medical community on how to properly, respectfully address & treat transgender, genderfluid, intersex, agender & nonbinary individuals.
It's 2021, not 1950 -- there's literally NO EXCUSE for medical professionals to treat transgender or nonbinary individuals with disrespect or insensitivity anymore. In my opinion, sensitivity training with regard to transgender/nonbinary individuals should be MANDATORY throughout medical offices in the United States. The humiliating & dehumanizing treatment most trans people receive at their doctor's office is the reason why they tend to avoid the doctor entirely instead of getting the medical or dental care they need.
Remember, a little kindness, understanding & compassion can go a long, long, LONG way.

Thank you so much for this wonderful video. I am Certified Nurse-Midwife and adjunct professor. I will be sharing this with the nurse midwife students that I teach. To the comment below re: ER physicians not having time....it does not take ANY time to treat a person with respect! We do that every day, and will continue to do so!

      Well said! 👍🏻
I believe that if you choose to pursue a career as a medical professional, then you should ALWAYS take the time to get to know ALL of your patients (at least on a basic level) & treat them all with courtesy, kindness & respect, regardless of whether you work in the ER or not! Like you said, it doesn't take any more time out of your day to simply treat someone with compassion or respect -- so why wouldn't you?
Remember the golden rule, everyone: always treat others the way YOU would like to be treated. A little kindness can go a long way!
      😊🌈❤

Watching this as part of my nursing school curriculum. At first it just felt like another assignment, but this is really good stuff, and so important. Inspires me to be the kind of nurse who makes everyone feel affirmed, safe, and cared for.

In healthcare it’s really important to know a person’s biological sex so that they can be treated safely. Treatments, tests, medications and symptoms present differently in men and women. You are putting yourself at risk by not asking for truthful sex markers.

This was an excellent video. Made me, as a healthcare professional, aware of non verbal negative cues to take notice.

This is lovely, and brought tears to my eyes. Thank you. I'm trying to provide sensitivity training for notaries, and although this isn't notary related - I really think this video would be a great video for these people to watch. May I have your permission to put this video on my website? I'd be happy to link to you within our credits page, and even on the page of where I would place the video. Anyhow, thanks again, and happy Monday!

Gynecology (n.) also gynaecology, "science of women's health and of the diseases peculiar to women," 1847, from French gynécologie, from Latinized form of Greek gynaiko-, combining form of gynē "woman, female," from PIE root *gwen- "woman." Second element is from French -logie "study of," from Greek (see -logy).

I'm lost, so I can't ask if your male or female? Don't we kind of need to know your biological anatomy too better help?

Healthcare is sex specific. The Dr and nurses need to know what sex they are treating.
They need to get your basic info so they can get you treated and move on to the next person.
Healthcare workers don't have time for guessing games.
And as far as "pronouns" go, Some people will never submit to the trans community's demand of proper pronoun usage. You simply cannot force people to see you the way you see yourself!
Some people will mis gender on purpose, and some people do it unintentionally.
We Black people have had to just face the fact that some people will be racist and some will not.
And most of the time there is nothing we can do about it because people have a right to there
opinions and views....So the Trans community needs to toughen up and accept the fact that they
may not always see friendly faces wherever they go.....It's hurtful, disrespectful, and just plain
hateful, but that's the reality of the world we live in.......DEAL WITH IT!!!!

What an ugly comment. You shouldn’t have to put up with racism or transphobia from health care workers and there’s nothing wrong with the efforts, historical and current, to lessen societal bigotry. Be better.

@@cw9627 I deal with it everyday and I think I handle it pretty well tbh. Most trans people I known have grown thicker skin because we’ve simply had to. But that doesn’t mean we should just give up on trying to progress society away from bigoted ideas about any groups, black people and queer people alike. And it certainly doesn’t mean that we should look upon people who do struggle with societies bigotry without some compassion and grace, which is very much how your comments come off.

@@theRiver_joan That's where you're wrong. I'm telling you the same thing I told my sons about LIFE. There will always be people out there that don't like you for whatever reason. Crying about it isn't going to help or change that. So get a hold of your emotions, man up and move on.

Thank You this is a amazing start more training is definitely needed in all aspects of health care to support the LGBTQIA+ Community education is the first step to providing the highest level of care to the community as we all know when a patient becomes uncomfortable right from the start it only makes the whole interaction more difficult for all involved be it the Neary system updates from update the use of proper pronouns and most of all acceptance we have a long way to go but in the end small steps forward = big step in patent care
